Automatic Start of a script / programm once USB Stick is mounted?

Is there a way to start a programm each time an USB Stick - in fact any volume - is mounted? In windows that is possible with autorun.inf . Is there something similar with mac?
All help is appreciated.
John

Thanks, that works very well. Although Lignon starts the script everytime anything is mounted I had it to just do the stuff I want by putting another script on the USB Stick that is only available when that stick is inserted. Thus the script I want only runs when I insert the USB Stick.
Thanks for your help!

  • USB Stick not mounting

    Hi Guys,
I have a 2GB IBM USB 2.0 memory stick and I did an 'erase' because trash wouldnt get rid of some locked files - and nothing else would. I did a 'zero - erase' and now the stick will not mount when I plug it into my computer. It says that it is not recognised and gives option to initialize or eject...
Please help as this is really useful!
    Many thanks,

  • Creating a bootable USB stick (Windows/syslinux issue)

    Hi everyone,
Lately I decided to install Arch on my new machine, using USB drive as there's no disc drive (out of fashion, all that stuff yk). After a ton of research at wiki I finally downloaded Arch ISO (so everything above is just a foreplay) and started my efforts to create a USB stick to boot from.
Firstly, when trying with simple USB Writer, it gave me an error message "An error occurred while opening the target volume.", which I thought back then, was just the tool's issue. Then I moved straight to creating bootable USB manually, by downloading and installing syslinux. Everything went fine and according to wiki's scenario until, once again, third-party program ought to do something with external drive.
At that stage, I'm getting syslinux' error message "Could not load drive: access is denied". Googling taught me that this, pretty obviously, happens when one's not running prompt as admin - but I am! Now I'm totally at a loss what to do.
(What it says in the last line after re-encoding is "access is denied" in Russian, and the upper panel - that I'm running prompt as an admin)
    Stick details:
A new one, was formatted with wiki-recommended Rufus USB partitioner, so that it's now FAT32, 4kb block size ARCH_201408.
P.S.: Everything is done on another machine as the new one has only old XP on which I have no intention to work with.
P.P.S.: Answering the registration question took me an hour, mostly 'cause of that the first online prompt didn't work with the command correctly, this thing is not Linux-newbie-friendly at all though I understand it might be meant to be so

There are four methods listed in the wiki for writing the Arch install iso to a USB device under Windows. You have tried the first one, USBwriter, and ignored the other three.
I'd suggest you try them all. You should also bear in mind that although the ISO you're using comes from Arch, the OS you're using does not, so any Windows issues that may affect what you're doing would be best addressed in a Windows forum.

  • Apple/Mac/MBP install from USB stick.

    Hi,
I am having trouble starting the installation process from a USB stick on a MBP (8,1). I followed the instructions at
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … n_Mac_OS_X
to prepare the USB stick, but am unable to convince the MBP to boot from it. I have tried both using the "Startup Disk" pane of Mac OS X's System Preferences, as well as restarting and holding down the "option" key; I just get the option to boot from the internal hard drive.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    katelman wrote:https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … n_Mac_OS_X
If I'm not mistaken, the USB drive has to be formatted a certain way for a Mac to boot it.
I couldn't get it to work either, but I'm trying (right now, even), to see of another method will work. I'll get back to you if I have anything noteworthy.
EDIT: Yeah, I'm getting nothing. If anyone else has input on this, I'll be happy to listen.

  • USB stick troubles

I'm trying to get USB sticks up...just one problem: every time I plug in my USB stick, it mounts somewhere else. I set
    /dev/sdb1 /media/usb vfat default 0 0
in my fstab, but the next time I plugged it in, it registered at sdc! Now, I'm no expert, and I know we're supposed to do things on our own, but this isn't working. what's the accurate fstab setting for this?
Also, when I get it right (like if I changed the above code to sdc1), and select "open in new window" in the KDE dialogue, I get an error message "Only HAL can do this." UPDATE: The same happens when I insert another medium, such as a CD.
And I've been over the HAL wiki page as well as the forum post it leads to. The post didn't really help me because the poster once had the feature working fine.

One more question. I get an error when ejecting my iPod, be it from Amarok or from the Desktop. It successfully unmounts, but fails to eject. For those familiar with iPods, the screen persists with the "Do not disconnect message" and the flashing circle. Has anyone else run into this, and if so, where can I find a fix?

  • How to run fsck.vfat for USB-stick during cRIO-9030 boot?

    Hi all,
we have a cRIO-9030 with a USB-stick. Sometimes after power loss the USB-stick filesystem (FAT32) gets corrupted and has to be checked/fixed. How can I configure cRIO LinuxRT to do that?
I've checked /etc/fstab, but it looks that the USB-stick is mounted somewhere else. I run mount - here is the line:
    /dev/sdc1 on /media/sdc1 type vfat (ro,relatime,fmask=0000,dmask=0000,allow_utime=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,quiet,errors=remount-ro)
It would be nice if I can run fsck.vfat /dev/sdc1 every boot or when an error is detected.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nikolai

    Hi NickViz,
My name is Ed form National Instruments Technical Support, I have researched into the topic and found that it is possible to use the 'System Exec.vi' to complete the command during the initialization of your RT application.
You simply need to input your commands as a string just as you would to command prompt/terminal (depending on OS), you can also execute commands via SSH however this is one way communication between the RT application and the command shell.
I have included some links below to articles which describe the methodology as well as give some further explanation into the NI Linux Real-Time OS.

    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14626/en/
I hope this is helpful and you achieve what it is you need, do note you will need to enable SSH scripting as described in the article on using PuTTY for your Real Time device.

  • How to access files in USB stick when installing from it?

I have prepared my installable USB stick (8G) from Arch 2009.02 ISO file, and copied some configuration files to the USB stick. Everything looks well.
After the Arch installation (not reboot yet), I want to access my configuration files on the stick, but I just cannot find them. Where has my USB stick been mounted to, and how can I read the files on it?
    I am confused...

lilsirecho wrote:To mount your USB stick you can mount it as root.  Using sd(x) as an example, mkdir /mnt/sd(x) in /mnt...
Of course I tried this, but failed. Well, maybe what I said above is not explicit enough. I mean:
    1. the USB stick is just the installable USB stick I used to install Arch;
    2. not mounting the USB stick on the system I've installed, but just on the live arch linux OS that the installable USB stick introduced.
After all, I was booting from the USB stick, so it may have been mounted. In fact, I can find it by:
      # cat /proc/mounts
In the output, my USB stick is /dev/sdb1, and the mounted directory is /bootxxx (not remembered, sorry), but I JUST cannot find this directory. So I was confused.
lilsirecho wrote:...Confused here that you used an .iso to generate a USB stick installer when the download archlinux-2009.02 is available in .img format for both i686 and X86_64...
Yes, I know there's an IMG file for USB stick. But I don't want to use it, because after I use "dd" command writing the IMG file to the USB stick, the stick became the same size (about 330Mb) as the IMG file. Then how can I copy some other files into this 8G USB stick?
So, I used archlinux-2009.02 ISO file. I prepared my USB stick by cfdisk, and formated it. I mounted the ISO file to some directory (using abc as an example), and copied all the files in abc to my USB stick, then installed grub on it. Finally, an installable 8G USB stick was made.

QuickTime version 10 can only record the entire screen.
10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 offer part of the screen recording.

  • Jobs Automatically Start- Stop via USB

As you can tell by machine model below, I'm a mobile kind of guy. I end up printing on a cheap little HP deskjet at home, a Dell Laserjet at work, and a 42" HP plotter for class and anything else that requires large-scale plans. In the past, I was able to simply find the driver for these printers (since they weren't included like many others in Mac OS), install, and hook up the USB cable to print so I wouldn't have to get take my files to a thumbdrive to print from a network PC (pretty crappy, slow dells at that).
Recently, the plotter driver stopped working. I would send a large file, usually EPS, from Photoshop and it would take forever and a day to process, but eventually quit on me and stop all jobs. Then the problems started happenning at work with the Dell. Here it was a large Pages file with lots of graphics or a regular EPS from AutoCAD that would stall out. Now, even at home with a simple Deskjet and a couple 100k EPS file, it is not working. Oddly enough, I was able to print one EPS file opened in Preview after an AutoCAD export, but when working with a large one I tiled for smaller sheets in Photoshop, the issue began with this printer as well.
In all instances, jobs to the printers try to send once they're done processing, but all jobs stop after the barber-shop job completion bar cycles for a bit (anyone have a better name for that, btw?). All of these drivers worked fine until around March 21st or 22nd. I don't print every day, but that was when I first noticed the plotter driver not working.
I can't seem to find my thumbdrive, so having USB printing capability is a necessity for current projects. Please send some suggestions.

  • YouTube Videos on Safari automatically start to reload once iMAC is logged in

    Hello there,
I have an issue bothering you since I upgraded my iMAC to Lion OS, hope you can help.
Well previously when I had Snow Leopard as my OS, I could open Safari & view Youtube videos & in fact could have many Tabs in a Safari window, each having a unique YouTube video. Once I finished watching the videos, they could stay there if even the system logged out or went to sleep ... and when I would re-login  all the videos which were completely displayed would remain there & I could watch them rightawat again without having to reload them from Internet. Since I upgraded to Lion, whenever I view YouTube videos in Safari (one unique video on each tabbed page), they would remain there until the system remains logged in ... however if the system automatically logs out (due to prolonged in-activity) or goes to sleep and when I re-login then all the videos which were viewed already would automatically start to reload again.
This is really frustrating, can you please guide if its some configuration issue? I reckon the videos which once gets into Safari cache should remain there (as was the case in Snow Leopard) but apparently Safari initiates a fresh reload once the system is logged-in & unnecessarily starts downloading vides again.
    Can you advise the solution?
    Thanks.
