Automatic switching of graphics cards on the new MBP (mid-2010 models)

I want to use the Nvidia GPU whenever the computer is plugged into the electric outlet. When it is running on battery, it uses the Intel HD video card. Is there a way to do it? Under energy saving and power adaptor tab, I unchecked automatic graphics switching so that the Nvidia GPU is used all the time when the computer is plugged into the power outlet. Then, I checked this option so that when the computer is running on battery, it uses the Intel HD. However, when I clicked on the power adaptor tab again, I found that this option has been unchecked automatically. Is this a bug?

I would like the same feature. Or at least the ability to select which applications trigger the 330M. I was playing chess on a plane and it switched to the 330M! I hardly think that program needs the discrete.

Why is Powernap not available for other MB's such as the MBP mid 2010 model for example?

I have a 2010 MBP 6,2 with an aftermarket SSD. My machine gets mail and notifications while asleep, but I do not have any powernap pref box in energy savings under 10.9.1
I do not have an Apple SSD. I have a Crucial M4-CT512M4SSD2
Apple did replace my MB last Fall under the video fault problem (for free after 3 years.....thanks Apple), but it stills identifies as a 6,2  Boot ROM  MBP61.0057.B0F
I wish I could shut off this powernap feature, but have no access to it.

  • Replacing my current graphics card - is the new one compatible with my pc?

    Hi,
    1. Product name and number:
HP Pavilion G5220sc desktop PC XS305EA
    2. Operating systems installed:
    Windows 7 64-bit
I'm not at all sure what to do. I'm very much into the PC game World of Warcraft and do no longer think it's optimal playing on low graphic options. That's why I'm considering replacing my current graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 315) with the upgrade (Inno3D GeForce GTX 560 (1 GB))
    What should i do?
Your opinion on this topic would be extremely appreciated.

  • No Graphics Card option with new MBP 17"

I have a new MBP 17" laptop, and I can not change my graphic card options. I've looked at the support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3207) about changing the settings, but my problem is that the Energy Saver system pane does not give me the Graphics option in the top left of the window as shown in the support document. I've tried disconnecting the power supply to see if that would bring up the option, but to no avail.
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions? I can't even tell which video processor the machine is currently using.

Take the computer to an Apple retailer or back to where you purchased it and have the problem fixed. The computer is under warranty. Otherwise the only thing you can try is to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X or do the following if possible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Suggest a better graphics card for my mac pro mid 2010

I use my Mid 2010 Mac Pro (not macbook pro) to do very heavy visual / special effects editing for film using the programs Blender, After Effects, Premier Pro and Element 3D.  I need a graphics card with at least 3GB of VRAM but I am having a hard time finding one that isn't outrageously priced.  I would really appreciate any suggestions for cards that aren't overclocked that would have the above VRAM or greater that would work with my particular Mac Pro.  Thanks so much for any help.

    How about HD7950  Mac Edition?

  • Does the Mac mini mid-2010 have an active PFC power supply?

I'm about to buy a UPS unit to run my NAS, and I'd like to connect my Mac mini to it as well. Does the Mac mini mid-2010 model have an active PFC (power factor correction) PSU (power supply unit)?
I've read that if it does (as the Dell XPS series do), then one of the cheaper UPS units won't work because those typically have modified/simulated sine wave outputs (you'll only notice when the power is out and the UPS is feeding power from its battery). It would mean I'd have to buy one of the more expensive UPS units like APC Smart-UPS SC620 or CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD.
I can't seem to find any resources that explain this. Please?

FWIW, I use one of these:
    http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/soho-ups/cp425slg.html?sel ectedTabId=overview&imageI=#tab-box
for my HTPC setup.  I have a 2010 Mini with a couple of USB drives plugged
into it, my 42" Samsung LCD TV, cable modem, cable box, and an Airport Extreme
Base Station running off of the backup power ports (not my 5.1 receiver for obvious
power reasons).  With all on, I get enough time to gracefully power down the Mini with
time to spare when power goes out.  When not watching TV or listening to music,
the cable modem and AEBS can run a long time during a power outage.
I have had this setup for around 2 years and have had no ill effects on any of
the gear and I do periodically have everthing powered then yank the AC
    cord to cycle the battery.

  • Do all the new MBPs support automatic graphics switching?

Hi, I read that older MacBooks required a manual switch between the integrated graphics and discrete GPU.
    I'm reading here: http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/13-and-15-inch/
"NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching"
Does that mean "... 512 MB, or 1GB and automatics graphic switching" -> Only the 1GB configuration supports auto graphics switching, or
"...512MB or 1GB, and automatics graphics switching -> both configurations support it
Hate to sound like a grammar freak, but just wondering - never liked having to log in and out to switch.
    Thanks!

The new MBP's with the Intel 4000 and the NVIDIA cards support automatic graphics switching. You can also use gfxCardStatus, which works with 2012 Mac's an Mountain Lion to make sure that auto graphics switching is enabled.

  • Mid-2012 RMBPro 10.9.4: Is it possible to switch between graphic cards?  Activity monitor shows the high perf card always active even through no running apps need it.

How does one switch between graphics cards on a RMB Pro that has both a regular and high performance card installed?

There's no control built into OS X to manually switch between them (that I know of). But in your Energy Saver preferences, there is setting called Automatic Graphics Switching that will either keep the discrete GPU on all the time, or automatically switch it off when not in use. Do you already have this preference turned on?
It might keep the high performance graphics card on if it's plugged into AC power, since there is no battery life penalty in that case.

  • Is it possible to add a graphics card to the back of my HP

Hello  I want to know if it's possible to add a new graphics card to the back of a Laptop not inside of it but on the back of my laptop ???  my graphics Card is a Intel 4000 graphics card is a terrible for gaming TERRIBLE !!!

Not sure where it would go on the back, but no the system is closed. There is no place to insert a graphics card or attach it. You will find some hokey stuff on the internet where people say you can plug a video card in the wireless card slot but those are a hoax at worst and at best they do not tell you that such a thing would not even perform as well as what you have and is likely to damage the motherboard.

  • What Graphics card is the best choice?

Still Aperture stalls and sputters. Its not a smooth experience.
Currently I rather D-tour through Canon Photo Professional to convert my RAW's to JPEG's and organize them in iPhoto than put them in Aperture (2.1.2) in a managed library.
Will a new Graphics card make the difference?
Currently I am using the stock NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256MB ram.
    And its just no fun.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't get it why there is so little to be found about the importance of a good graphics card for Aperture.
Meantime I have read good things about the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT witch is the official Apple recommended product.
For now I will wait with the purchase of a new Graphics card and wait a few more weeks to see what Apple will announce at Macworld. Since I really like the new 24" cinema display that's currently only compatible with the Unibody Macbook and MB Pro's. I hope that Apple will finally renew their line of display's. And if they are going push the mini display port I will also expect new graphic cards...
Oh boy' this makes me think about my investment in Firewire compatible accessories...

  • T410 - Switch between graphics cards

    Hi,
    i just bought the T 410 (2522-3FG).
Despite the fact that it was advertised there is no option whatsoever to switch between the Nvidia discrete graphics card and the gpu of the i7-processor.
Yes, i have installed the powermanager (version 3.12) but the option is missing.
Furthermore i read in various forums that the information that this laptop comes with the ability to switch between discrete and integrated graphics is a hoax.
So my question is: will there ever be the option to switch between the different graphics cards? Will it somehow be implemented by software updates or will it never work?
    Best regards from Germany,
    earth2

I'm not sure you're missing much.  The battery run-time loss since I "switched" my T400 to Win 7 has been very frustrating.   So far there hasn't been any hint that Lenovo is doing anything about it.
Without some tap-dancing with power manager after each reboot, the switchable option is using more power than either discrete or integrated alone.  Sometimes it cuts run-time in half.  Even after the tap-dance it still uses more juice than it used to.  This stuff used to work.
Enought about me - how do you like your machine otherwise?  I'm quite pleased with the T400 post-Vista, and holding onto the hope that the graphics driver will eventually be fixed.

  • HP pavilion 17 problems switching amd graphics card

HP pavilion 17 with AMD radeon 8670M
I tried to switch from intel graphics card to AMD graphics card, at the switchable graphics menu.
Switched to high performance at some games, but I still can't run the game at high settings, and even low settings are too high, the game is still a bit slow .  I have searched for some solutions, like changing the card in the BIOS, but the setting to change cards, wasn't in the BIOS. Nothing helped, and after a year i still don't have a solution to this problem...
Does anyone knows a solution to this, what am I doing wrong?

    Hi ...
Just be cause the account was disabled (Apple ID) doesn't mean you can't reset the password and have access to your iTunes purchases.
Use the iforgot link to reset your password > Apple ID: "This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons" alert appears
If you have problems resetting, use the email form here >   Apple - Support - iTunes Store - Contact Us

  • Graphics card in the MacBook

I'm about to buy the black Macbook, but I'm afraid that the Intel GMA 950 graphics processor is not good enough for the apps like iPhoto and iMovie.
Will I have to buy a MacBook Pro to run these apps satisfying or is the graphics card in the MacBook enough?
      Windows XP Pro

The entire iLife suite will run beautifully on the MacBooks with the GMA950 chipset. It is only when you attempt to play some higher end games that the chipset falls short.

The iPhone under normal circumstances does not store contacts on the SIM Card. It can read them, but again under normal circumstances does not write them to the SIM Card.
When you sync your new iPhone to iTunes on your usual computer you can restore from a Back-Up of your old iPhone to get Contacts and other data and files installed on your new iPhone.
