Automatic update of cross references possible?

I work on a very long document using InDesign CS3 and InCopy CS3 and want to include cross references to other pages and chapters between the text. For example "Text...(See also chapter 3.4.1 on page 54)." I have the problem now that if I paste chapters or pages, some of the references are not valid any more. Is their a way to update those cross references automatically?! Is there a function available for that?! If somebody could help me with that, it would be great, really. Thanks a lot!

Sebastian,
1. Create a template (for each translated language) that has the desired entries on the Reference page(s). Make certain that the Reference Graphic Frames still have the exact same names as used in the origianl FM document. Then at the book level, select all the files in the book (that require these Reference pages) and File > Import > Formats, select Reference pages only, indicate the appropriate template file (it has to be open) and let FM do all of the work. Should take only a few seconds.
2. Again, in the language specific template, update the Cross-Reference format and import the "Cross-Reference Formats" from the template into the appropriate files in the book.
You can do both at the same time.

  • Turn off live update of cross references

I'm using Indesign CS6 and javascript.
Is there a way to temporary turn off the 'live update' feature of cross references between separate indesign files?
We find this feature to be a real pain if more than one person is trying to work with the files as it slows everything dramatically.
I've searched through the DOM and Adobe InDesign CS6 (8.0) Object Model JS: Table of Contents but I guess I don't know the right terminology to look for.
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks,

Possibly you have obtained a modified version of Firefox. Preferences, chrome, js or whatever may have been modified.
If work requires you to develop on certain versions, and you are doing some of that on this computer, why not install multiple copies of Firefox, including the required versions. I trust the required versions will be the currently supported versions; at the moment that is 3.6, 6, 7, 8 or 9
You should ensure you use multiple profiles so each has a unique profile.
For the current problematic firefox 6 do a clean install, deleting the original program files, but not the profile files. (or possibly an additional install in a custom location with a new profile - allowing you to retain the current firefox 6, and a standard firefox 6) Profiles may be cloned/copied if required, bookmark libraries may be accessed from other versions/profiles if necessary, and multiple versions can be run concurrently. ( I talk from a Windows perspective, but it is unlikely Linux is going to differ)

  • Updating numbered Cross references crashes InDesign in both CS6 and CS4

I have a large medical journal that has over a hundered references, which I cross-referenced with the thinking that the client may well insert or amend the refernces. I was correct and now the customer has several references to go in I have updated the first in its numbered list at the end and gone to "update cross-refernce" and InDesign crashes. I have tried this in CS6 and CS4 but both crash.

This happens often, particularly with cross-references across documents that are managed with an InDesign book file. One common suggestion, in addition to updating the installed software with the latest patches, is to open all the files in the book before updating; this may or may not always succeed. Search this forum for cross-reference crash to see other suggested solutions.
Some of those posters may mention the commercial third-party Cross-References Plug-in for InDesign, from dtptools.com, and the poster's experience with it. It is reputed to be much more reliable than InDesign's built-in cross-references. It includes an option to convert the ID cross-references to its own, and that's reversible. There's a free trial. There's also a free reader plug-in for users who will need to open and edit documents that contain the plug-in's cross-references. The reader plug-in permits users to edit content in the documents without affecting the cross-references. HOWEVER, to edit or creatge new cross-references, users need the full plug-in.

  • Creating and updating cross-references in a book

    Hello everybody,
I created a book of several files. Now I would like to create and update cross-references from one chapter to another. What do I have to do? (I use Framemaker 8).
    Thank you for your help.
    Bye
    Vreni

For creating cross-references between chapters, open the chapter documents and insert cross-references as is done for any normal document using menu command "Special->Cross-Reference".
For updating all cross-references throughout the book, you can use the menu command "Edit->Update Book".

  • Cross-references in a different document

We have used FrameMaker for years (currently Version 7.1). We are in the process of switching to InDesign (CS5).
One current project is a print catalog where I put each section in a different document. One of the sections is a list of book titles. Another section is an index of authors and books by each author, with a page number cross-referencing each title with its entry in the title section.
In FrameMaker, when I open the author document, I can update all the references at once by pointing to the title document.
I don't see an easy way to do this in InDesign. Is it possible to update all cross-references at once?
Furthermore, in researching the problem on the Internet, I came across multiple comments that suggested that it's not a good idea to use cross-references across multiple documents in InDesign. Is this true, or was it only a problem in previous versions of InDesign?
    Thanks for the help!

I think you should head over to the scripting forum and ask over there. Dave Saunders has just finished a huge project with thousnads of cross-refs to external docs and he might have some scripting ideas that would help you.

  • Cross-reference mixup after package

    Hi,
    I've got a question regarding InDesign cross-reference.
    Here's the background:
The original source is stored in F drive.
Packaged source is stored in C drive.
For each of my drafts, I need to attach the packaged source with the PDF.
I have 10 cross references in a 100 page document.
    The question is this:
When I package the InDesign files, I assumed that my cross references will be updated to the InDesign files in the packaging directory.
But when I checked them out, the cross references were still linked to the original source. So I had to manually update each cross reference to the packaging directory.
Although the PDF works fine, I have some concerns about this situation.
Does any one else had this problem? If so, are there any solutions to this issue?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thx.

Books are funny creatures. Another thing that confuses a lot of users is that if you make a copy of the .indb file and all the component .indd files, the copied .indb does not point to the copied .indds, but retains the links to the original locations.

  • Problem deleting cross-references: Deleted cross-references do not convert to correct text

This helpful page states that, "When you delete a cross-reference, the source cross-reference is converted to text."
I use InDesign to create user's manuals, which are full of cross-referenced page numbers.
The cross-references are all internal to a single document, they do not link to other documents. Each cross-reference is linked to paragraph text and the cross-reference format is Page Number.
I find that whenever I delete a cross-reference, the cross-reference does convert to text; however, the text—which in this case is a page number—is wrong.
For example, this sentence is on page 16:
"You can measure your heart rate using either the handgrip heart rate monitor or an optional chest heart rate monitor (see page 21 for information about the optional chest heart rate monitor.)"
    Screenshot:
However, when I delete the cross reference, the sentence now reads:
"You can measure your heart rate using either the handgrip heart rate monitor or an optional chest heart rate monitor (see page 16 for information about the optional chest heart rate monitor.)"
    Screenshot:
Now, to my mind, the cross-reference should have converted to the text "21," since that is what the cross-reference said (and it is the correct page number for the optional heart rate monitor text that is being referred to).
Instead, the cross-reference converted to the text "16," which is the number of the page that the sentence is actually on, but is most definitely not what the cross-reference said and is not the correct page number to boot.
Do any of you know the reason this happens?
Is there a way to make the text convert to the correct page number when the cross-reference is deleted?

Update: The cross references work when I export the book as Print PDF. Sadly this solution does not work in my case, because all my interactive element are disabled when exporting as Print PDF.

  • Cross References in ID CC

I've seen cross reference questions, but none dealing with ID CC, which, I believe is 64-bit.
We've greatly expanded our use of cross-references with this new more power version with overall good success. However, ID still seems to insist on updating every cross-reference with every keystroke. What a pain.
I work with all book documents open to minimize this, but since it's across a network, it can still be pretty painful. In addition, some documents are used in multiple books so I use layers to control which cross-references are active any any given time.
It's getting very trying. Does anyone have experience with using 3rd party xref management software with ID CC?

    Hi Van,
I fear, I expressed myself not very clear. I try again.
We have DITA structured documents. However, lastest status often was saved in the FM document. The xml documents often are not representing the final status.
When I open the FM8 document in FM9 everything looks pretty good.
But: When I want to save the document as xml with FM9, I'm getting errors regarding the cross references.
The cross references which were created in FM8 - doesn't matter, if a valid xml document or a FM document - always look the same.
(BTW: I don't think that in structured documents cross references always refer to elemts with a unique ID.)
example from xml which was created with FM8:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" type = "fm:Chapter">"..."</xref>
the only difference in the FM document is that the element is called fm-xref there, as it's not an external url.
in FM9 those cross references are totally different.
example from xml which was created in FM9:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" class = "- topic/xref">"..."</xref>
When saving the FM documents with the cross references from the first example as xml in FM9 (we don't have FM8 anymore), I get an error that the attribute type is not defined.
When having a xml document that was last changed with FM8 and opening/ saving this with FM9, there is no error.
At the moment I do not know how to solve this issue.
And also I'm not sure weather the same problem might accour again with change from FM9 to FM10 or else.
It is a great effort to make new cross references just because we upgraded from FM8 to FM9. (And of course always at most inconvienent time.)
As we are thinking of upgrading to FM10, it would be good to know before, if there are any similar issues to expect.
Or if there is an fix for FM9 or FM10 to avoid this at all.
    Regards,
    Anna

  • Automatically updated cross-references usable in printed documentation?

I am new to RH and will have to convert large documents
created in Word to HTML + PDF. I have already given up on RH for
Word (RH Word v7 + Word 2007 crashes very often on Vista and is far
too slow) and will use RH HTML, and I am prepared to do extensive
manual editing, and to change the visual appearance of documents if
necessary. The help system is going to be updated frequently, and
references to other parts of the document should update
automatically when the contents are edited.
My main problem at this stage is how to create and maintain
the internal references to other parts of the same document, which
is done in Word with auto-numbered chapters, sections and figures.
Online HTML is not a problem, and Word references can be changed to
HTML links. Presumably this could work also in online PDF. The
problem is printed PDF, where hyperlinks obviously do not work.
The Word documents use references like (see
    section 2.5) and (
Figure 4.2), which are hyperlinks in the online version and
can be followed manually in the printed version. How do I do this
progressive numbering in RH HTML so that it updates automatically
when chapters, sections and figures are inserted, deleted or
shuffled? If this is not possible at all (as I suspect) how do I do
something usable in the PDF output, e.g. converting hyperlinks to
something like (see page 213), with the page number updated
automatically to correspond to the actual position of the target in
    the PDF document?

Sorry, posted this by mistake in RH for Word forum. Moderator
can delete this thread if desired.

  • Why is a single Cross Reference text turning red after doing an Update?

After updating a large book in FrameMaker10,  the same cross-reference made in  a couple of chapters is turning to red text.   It is  set as  Heading 2.  I tried to deleted the heading and re-typing it.  I tried to change the style to Body and back to Heading 2 but all references to it are turning to red text after I update the book.  Any idea what is wrong and how do I fix it? I am using unstructured version.  See image.

Apply a Character Format of Default ¶ Font. Then re-apply the desired Paragraph Format. If the red goes away, it was either a Character Format that had been applied or a local color override. If the red is still there ...
Look at the Special > Cross-Reference > Format > Definition itself. Look for any <character-format-name> and see if any of those have a red Color defined in their Format > Character > Designer. If so, remove that building block from the definition [Change] [Done] [Replace].

  • Cross-Reference update

It would be great to have a better interface for Cross-References.
    1. Don't reset the source everytime Insert is pressed.
This is seriously annoying if you want to insert a bunch of references over and over. You have to reselect the Document and scroll down the list of paragraphs.
    2. Improve the Go to Source view.
If the Cross-Reference is similar to other sources it is dificult to know which one you are selecting. Imagine a table with numbers in it and several cells have the same value. You can't easily figure out what you are referencing. Maybe a preview window would be better?

    Dear PV
No you cannot update customer material info record via MASS.  It can either be uploaded via LSMW or BDC.

  • Can anyone tell me (if possible?) how to automatically update itunes apps* on computer

I hate having to go in and update manually, so if there IS a way, can someone tell me the steps to do an automatic update of my apps in itunes, I know it can be done on iphone/ipods, but just asking for how to set up itunes to open up and then automatically update APPS, I have it set to update podcasts music etc, but want to update the apps, if NOT possible, Okydoky... I have windows 7 and the latest version of Itunes 10.7.

Currently there is no feature to allow your apps to update automatically in the background. Check for available updates > Update all is the best you can do.

  • Is it possible to delete all cross-reference links in a PDF at once?

I have a 577 page PDF with multiple cross-references on each page.
Unfortuntely, this causes the document to load pages VERY slowly on my iPad.
Is it possible to delete these cross-reference links in one shot, rather than one by one?
I am using Acrobat 9.5, if it matters.
I tried Advanced - Document Processing - Remove All Links
    But it didn't touch them.
    Thanks

A simple, but not typically recommended to do this is simply print the PDF to a new PDF. The printing process will eliminate all such markup, including bookmarks. There may be a preflight script to do this or might even be possible with the PDF Optimizer (think I remember such an option, but can't check on this machine).

  • Cross-references to numbered steps in a procedure?

RoboHelp 9 - Is it possible to create cross-references to numbered steps in a procedure? For example, if step 19 in a procedure refers back to step 3, can this reference be set so that it can automatically update if new steps are added before step 3?

    Hi,
You could try adding bookmarks to the step you want to refer to and the hyperlinking to the bookmark. This is not self maintaining like FM cross references are though...

  • Indesign Styles - Linking Styles to a master document like Cross references

Appologies if this has been asked before. If it has, if y ou could provide a link, that would be very much appreciated.
    So...
What im asking is, is it possible to link a styles attributes ( e.g BULLETS) to a document that has a master BULLETS style.
What would happen when I change the master files BULLETS style, is it would update all the documents in the book to meet the master docs BULLET style.
I've done this by creating a template doc (.indt) and using that (but its only works for new docs), but a bunch of styles have changed and its a pain in the bum to go back and import styles, and "replace with incoming style" for EVERY chapter/doc.
Is there a way to update styles much like cross references or page numbers?

Two different ways: using a Book you can synchronize your styles across documents (always all of them), and you can always load all or a selection of your styles from another document, from the Paragraph (or Character) Style panel mennu.
Both ways are manual; ID don't update them automatically (and boy! am I glad it doesn't).
