Automatic update to 9.3.2 not running

Hey all,
We have a number of branch offices with computers running Vista SP1 with Adobe Reader installed on them. With the most recent Reader update, rather than prompting the user to install the update, only a tray icon is displayed and the user must click on it to initialize the installation. Naturally, nobody actually does this.
I found the Adobe Reader Updater configuration guide here (PDF link). I followed the instructions to set the "iCheck" key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM to 3 to have updates automatically installed. Now the icon does not appear in the system tray, but the updates are never installed. Here is the text from the AdobeARM.log file after a reboot:

I assume "IsUAC_Enabled returns 1." means it thinks UAC is enabled, which is not the case. Users have local admin.

Update: It appears UAC was disabled on these computers by setting the following two policies in Local Security Policy under Security Settings\Local Policy\Security Options:
User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for Administrators in Admin Approval Mode: Elevate without prompting
User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode: Enabled
I'm going to see if there's a group policy that needs to be set to convince the updater that UAC is in fact disabled, since I think this may be a somewhat non-standard method of disabling it. I'll keep you posted.

  • Working on Windows 7, ran automatic updates recently, now Photoshop CS5 not working

    Hi there. I recently got a new laptop with Windows 7. I installed PS CS5 and have been using it with no problems until I ran automatic updates the day before yesterday, now my PS CS5 ACTS like it's open but really isn't. I can't view the screen, see any files, open anything from Bridge, etc. But when I go to shut down the computer, it tells me PS is running. I can shut it down in Task Manager but otherwise, I can't see that it's open. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled and the problem still happens. Any ideas? Did some service pack wipe out my ability to view PS? Bridge opens just fine, as does Lightroom. Any ideas? I'm a professional photographer and this totally has affected my workflow!! Please help. By the way, I can open PS CS3.

    Don't ever allow windows to run updates in the auto mode. Change it to where you can run the updater but choose what you want to update. Video card drivers are the worst offender in auto-update. You never know what hits you until the update is done.
    You can also do a system restore too. Go back to a date before the updates. Then see if that works. Then go into windows update and change it from auto to manual so you can choose the updates. Stay away from the video card update.
    You can go to www.amd.com and look for your crad drivers. Some laptops allow AMD to publish updated driver and some don't. Since you did put the name of the laptop in your post it is best for you to go there and look. The drivers will be mobility drivers. Download the 10.8 mobility driver package.
    If you find the drivers download them to your desk top. A download icon will be made. Click on that Icon to download the software. This new icon is the actual software.
    Right click on that icon, choose properties, general tab. There should be something about unlocking the file below. Click to unlock then hit apply. Then choose compatibility tab, put a check mark in run as Admin, hit apply, then ok to close. Some people don't do this step but I do to ensure the proper security levels are met (but not needed to do so your choice).
    Click on the icon again to install software. when you come to a screen with the option to install/uninstall the software, choose uninstall. Let it run its course. The screen will flicker and you will see the screen go away and come back bigger (no drivers). When done reboot computer.
    Click on that icon again but now you want to choose install software. Let it run its course. The screen will flicker and screen will go away and come back.
    Reboot computer.
    Hope the drivers work. If they don't go back to system restore and choose a point where you had the good drivers and CS5 worked.

  • Ran firefox update and now firefox does not run correctly.

    I ran the latest firefox update 9Firefox Setup Stub 33.0). Now when I start firefox the browser opens and inside of it is black. I cannot see anything to use the browser.   • Reader will not read my pdf files. after an automatic update the pdf files are not accessable.

    adobe automatic update to XI caused the reader of my pdf files to stop working. The reader tries to open -- the adobe reader window opens for a few seconds, nothing in the window is activated -- then the window automatically closes.
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled previous versions that used to work but the reader 9 and X now do the same thing. open, unactivated window after a few seconds the program then shuts down.
    I cannot open and read any pdf file on this computer.
    There are no error messages and everything seems normal. The program does not work properly.
    I have ran the windows diagnostic tools to no avail.
    This computer operates windows 7

    See if you can open the EULA.exe file in the folder that contains the install of Reader or Acrobat.

    1. Delete the taskbar icon by right clicking it and selecting "unpin this program from taskbar."
    2. Click the Start button. Click All Programs and find "Adobe Lightroom 3.6 . . ." This should show up near the top of the program list.
    3. First, left click this item to be sure it works to open the program. [If not, I'm out of ideas and you may have to re-install Lightroom.] If it does work, close Lightroom (once it has opened).
    4. Click the start button and locate Lightroom 3.6 again. This time, Right-click this item - holding down the right mouse button - and drag it to an open area of the taskbar. You should see a prompt to "Pin this Program to Taskbar." If so, release the mouse button, and the new icon will appear on the taskbar. Try clicking this icon normally and LR should open for you,

  • Windows update could not check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

    I restarted my computer but still have this issue.
    I changed the setting from "install updates automatically"  to "never check for updates". clicked ok and then changed back to "install updates automatically". Tried to check for updates and still receive the same error.
    Windows defender was turned off. I turned it on updated it but still receive the same error message.
    The background intelligent transfer service and windows update are set to "automatic delayed start" and the status for both is "started".

    Stop Windows Update Service and BIT Service now.
    Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all file under this folder.
    Start Windows Update and BIT service now.
    Then try to download windows update now.
    If doesn't work, please reset the windows update componments

  • Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running

    Running Windows 7 on a Dell N5110. 
    I get the above message for Windows Updates. Below that it states: Find out more about free software from (null). 
    I have restarted the computer. 
    I have run McAffe and MalwareBytes Pro- nothing wrong.
    This answer didn't work because the Software Distribution folder was
    already empty:
    go to services and stop Windows update service
    locate C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ folder and delete all its content
    start Windows update service
    check for update
    Under Services:
    BITS is set at Automatic(Delayed Start)
    Windows Update is also set at Automatic (Delayed Start). It is stopped. If I try to start it, I get the following message: Windows could not start the Windows Update service on local computer. Error 1079: The account specified is different from the account
    specified for other services running in the same processes. 
    In addition, the Windows Update shows nothing under view update history and nothing under hidden updates. Change settings allows me to do absolutely nothing. Red Shield with an x and the options are shaded. 
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I've read through quite a few post and ran the MGADiag on the system in question.
    I tried turning Auto update on and off, rebooted, removed a ton of malware, and have scanned multiple times using Hiron's to make sure it's clean. After all that, it still gets the exact same error referenced in the subject line. At this point I'm in serious
    contention to do the 'upgrade' to repair the OS. Windows 7 Home Prem OA is listed on the tag attached to the tower.

    Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

    Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • Just tried updating itunes and now will not run: apple mobile device failed to start

    I was prompted to update iTunes on my Windows 7 PC. Tried to do so but now iTunes refuses to run.
