Automatic Update without removing songs

Hello,
I am one of the somewhat fortunate people to have an iPod with more memory than is available on my computer. Unfortunately, this puts me in an awkward position with Automatic Updates from iTunes. Since I can't keep all the songs from my iPod on my PC, I am forced to manually insert any new songs into the iPod. Is iTunes ever going to support "appending" songs to the iPod? Are there any software-requests for this in progress? And if not, where can I submit one? I don't think I'm the only one who could use this functionality.

• How can I switch from Automatic to Manual update without losing songs?

I have on my ipod songs from another computer, however I'm afraid to plug it into my computer because my computer is set to automatic update for my ipod. Is there a way for me to switch my ipod to manual update without losing songs on my ipod when plugging it in? thanks.

Here is what you do:
Open iTunes.
Plug in your ipod.
hold control and shift at the same time. this stops your ipod from updating automatically. Hold this until your ipod is finished docking.
Then go to edit>preferences>ipod
then change the setting from update automatically to update manually.

• Go from manually update to auto-update without losing songs?

I was trying to delete some podcasts from my ipod, and was following the directions on the help menu which told me to go to preferences and choose manual update, then delete. I tried it, and it didn't work. When I decided to go back to auto update, I received a message that everything on my ipod would be deleted and the update would be just what is on the itunes on that machine. I have more than one computer, and have itunes on each one. There are different songs on each computer. If I go to manually update on this computer, it will erase the songs I've put on from other computers. All this and I still have the unwanted podcasts. Can anyone help me to go back to auto-update without losing songs? If worse comes to worst I guess I'll have to update, lose the songs, and then re-update at my other computers. thanks.

Afraid that's not possible. If you go to auto-update, the iPod gets cleared and replaced with the current contents of the iTunes library.

• What will happen to the organization of library if I removed the songs from windows explorer? Will iTunes automatically updated without all the deleted songs, or it will indicate 'missing location'? Any fast ways to clear this 'missing location' songs?

What will happen to the organization of library if I removed the songs from windows explorer?
Background: I found it easier to identify duplicated songs in windows explorer as the songs will be renamed .... 1.mp3, thus enabling me to remove the duplicated songs; unlike in iTunes where I know the trick of showing duplicate songs, but you don't know which one is the one with 1 at the end of the file name.
Will iTunes automatically update the library without all the deleted songs, or will it indicate 'missing location' songs? Any fast ways to clear this 'missing location' songs by highlighting them all and delete all at one go?
Thanks.

One way is to use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on start up.
Another option is with a set of Lost & Found playlists.
Lost & Found
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.
You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.

• Updating Ipod Without Removing Songs

Hi, I was wondering is there a way to add new songs to the ipod without removing the current songs on it? Because I think when I update the ipod, with different folders, the songs aren’t there anymore. The reason is that I want to delete some of the videos that are on my computer since they are already on my ipod.
Also, I will be using a new computer for 2 weeks, so I’ll be adding new songs from a new itunes….will this delete the present songs on the ipod even though they are not on the computer?
Thanks.

You need to change iTunes to manual updating rather than automatic. Then changes you make in iTunes will not be automatically made on your iPod. To make this change, mount the iPod and in iTunes either right-click on the iPod icon or go to the iPod Options at the bottom of the iTunes window.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you make a backup copy of any tracks or videos that you remove from iTunes before you delete them. Having content only on an iPod is not sufficiently reliable to risk.

• When Firefox was automatically updated, it removed my yahoo toolbar and I can't reinstall it.

When Firefox was automatically updated to 29, it removed my yahoo toolbar and I can't reinstall it. I go through the motions of installing the toolbar and when I restart Firefox, the toolbar is there for a split second and then is deleted from the display. I have since removed the automatic update feature from Firefox and will only update if I deem it necessary and non-destructive. In the past your software has also removed the Social Fixer add-on. I am aware that Facebook does not like Social Fixer. Mozilla should remain neutral. You should not do Facebook's dirty work for them. I can do without Facebook and I can also do without Firefox.

Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*'''Windows:'''
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

• How do I disable automatic updating? I am about to switch to another browser because of the frequency with which I am delayed by an automatic update without the option to put it off to another time.

I have been using Firefox and its ancestors since the beginning. I am at the end of my rope with it. When I click a link or open the browser it is because that is what I seek to have happen. Unless there is a way to turn off automatic updating, I am going to pack it in and find another platform. I cannot see what would be lost if Firefox would do its updating on the way out, when my attention has moved on, and it is not taking up my time. Is there a solution to this with Firefox?

Hi,
It is true that the Classic Theme Restorer add-on will NOT bring back all of your customized settings/appearance on Firefox 28, but it will help a little It's recommended that you stay on the latest version to receive the latest security fixes and bug patches but you're free to downgrade if you want.
You can set these prefs in
about:config
to disable automatic updating:
app.update.auto - false
app.update.enabled - false
app.update.silent - false
• How can I force an app to re-sync/update without removing it.

I am developing an app for the iPhone using Flash CS5.5
Everything time I publish the ipa, I have to remove it from the phone and then re-add it, thus deleting any save information on the phone.
Is there is a way I can get iTunes to "update" the application without having to first remove it? The version in the application as of now is 0.0.x and I update the x every time I publish, but iTunes doesn't seem to care if the version on the phone is older than the one in the library.

I don't believe that there is, but things may be different when working with the developer tools. I'd suggest you ask in the developer forums, either here or available to you as part of your developer program membership; you'll be more likely to find a workaround there.

• Afraid automatic update will delete Ipod songs

My old computer crashed permanently. I got a new one and now want to transfer the songs remaining on my Ipod onto the new computer. The problem is that I am afraid when I connect the Ipod, the automatic update will delete all the songs off it (since the new library is currently blank). And I can't turn off automatic update without plugging in the Ipod, since that icon in the bottom right of Itunes won't appear unless it is plugged in.
It's a tricky situation because if I get it wrong once, everything is gone. Any suggestions?

Welcome, Paulli, to the Apple Discussions!
I'll answer your question in just a minute but first I've got to say that I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn a very important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can after resolving this situation because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in just such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, you will want to include your iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.
Anyways, that's the lecture. The answer to your problem should be found in this post:

Good Luck! But once your music is back on your computer, remember:

• Turn off automatic updates?

i want to plug in my ipod, but i don't want the songs to automatically update to the songs on itunes. does anyone know how to do this? thanks

If you want to manage it manually then connect your iPod and click on the iPod icon in the iTunes source list to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. In the Summary tab check the box "manually manage music and videos" and click Apply:
Managing content manually on iPod
iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods:: Safely Disconnect IPod

• Windows 10 - How to Stop Automatic Update July 29th

Hi, all! I just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 3 14. I'm in the process of setting it up (any suggestions welcome, but I've been reading through this forum and searching online for help) and have been unable to find an answer to the following question. The sales associate told me that any PC I purchased (which currently has Windows 8.1) will automatically update itself to Windows 10 on July 29th once connected to the internet. My problem is that I will be sitting for the bar exam at the end of the month with this laptop (ending on the 30th). The bar exam uses ExamSoft (by SofTest), which does not support Windows 10 (yet, not guaranteed to do so by the bar exam - and definitely not something I want to have to worry about). The exam software requires an internet connection to upload the exam, though it is not connected to the internet other than for the upload. I shut off Automatic Update (for now) and am hoping that if I do not connect to the internet for long (though I can't control how long and it may need to be connected for a long time to upload), it won't update. Does anyone know of a way that I can stop this automatic update? (When I updated my old laptop to Win8 and then 8.1, I was able to opt in to the update and run it when I chose, as well as go back to the former version if I didn't like the new. It seems odd to me that this is an automatic update without option.) Thanks in advance!

If I were in your situation, I'd leave it as is. As long as we will eventually have to approve the download and most likely agree to several prompts, I wouldn't bother going through the extra work of removing the reminder. Someone else might have another opinion, but that is what I'd do.

No apologies are necessary. No one knows everything there is to know about computers. Feel free to visit our forums whenever you have a question. Good luck on the bar exam.

• Help! computer stuck while installing automatic updates

Hi there, I'm having a problem while installing the automatic updates. I bought this iMac about 7 months ago and I've installed all the automatic updates without any problems, but since 2 weeks ago when the updated software asked me to restart my computer to install the new updates, the computer just got stuck after loging out when the INSTALLING UPDATES windows appears. It stayed there for about 6 hours (I thought it was like a really large update) but the process bar was still like in 1%. So I just pressed the ON/OFF button and restarted the computer.
Now I have 4 updates outstanding and everytime I tried to install them the same happens, the computer gets stuck in the installation window.
Does anyone here know what could be wrong and how to fix it? is there any way to delete the installations remaining and start right from scratch or something?
Please I need help! this is the first Mac I've ever had!
Thank you all.
