Automatically hiding the bookmark bar
For iPad mini and the IOS 8 update, is there a a way to automatically hide the bookmark bar without having to tap the bookmark symbol again after every use?

there is probably an eloquent way to ask this but I don't even know what the feature is called.
Here is what it's doing:
I'm using safari in landscape mode on my iPad.
I click on the search bar and then the bookmarks come up below.
It takes a second to automatically resize to a size that make no sense, usually cutting off bookmark titles...and the delay of it resizes drives me nuts.
Safari did not used to do this until I guess ios 8. Any ideas how to stop this annoying "feature"??Try deleting the Cache.db...
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari ...
You may want to try the Safari Reading List as an alternative to tabs.
Click the eyeglass icon just to the left of the Bookmarks icon top left side of the Safari window.
Drag the url to the window or click Add Page -
I've just installed Firefox4 for Mac (OS 10.6.7) and can no longer see all my bookmark folders at once across the top -- because the folder icons make the Bookmarks Bar too wide. Yet, I like the icons on the other bars, so I don't want to turn them off globally. Is there a way to just lose the folder icons -- which don't appear to serve a purpose anyway?
Small correction to original post. Machine is an iMac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. (I was at home when I made the first post.) But the bookmarks menu behavior still exists today and FF 5 is essentially unusable.
System details next to the post are not for machine with the bug in question.
Found a copy of FF4 to use until a solution is found. Turned off automatic updates to preserve this version. -
How do I prevent the bookmarks bar from opening on start-up?
I already have the bookmarks bar un-checked under options, but it still automatically opens when I first start Firefox? Is there a way to stop this? Thank you.
Hey Copenhagen,
Are you talking about the Bookmarks toolbar? The one along the top of the screen? Does the checkmark come bock when you restart Firefox?
Either way, you should take a look at the Preferences are not saved Knowledge Base article. It could be that Firefox is having trouble writing to the pref.js file.
If that doesn't work, you could also try Creating a new profile.
Hopefully this helps! -
Since I upgraded to iOS8, my iPad screen permanently shows the bookmarks bar down the left. This means I can only use about ⅔ of the screen when in landscape mode. Is there something I am missing which allows me to hide/show the bookmarks bar? Thanks
TThank you so much! I felt it must be something straightforward.

How do I drag a link to the bookmarks bar?
This started with a simple attempt to install an app that will let me see page source at sites I'm looking at (I'm doing web development and learning to customize for iphone). When I went to a site to get me started, it said all I had to do was drag thhis link ("this link" was hyperlinked text) to the bookmarks bar. I tried touching the link and dragging it to bookmarks bar but that just moved the whole page. I tried holding my finger on the link until it showed a gray background and dragging to the book marks bar. Same problem. I googled dragging links and found some sites that talked about using a + symbol in the bookmarks bar. I don't see one. I have an iPhone 3GS, and the bookmarks bar has a left arrow, right arrow, box with an arrow pointing out of it, open book symbol and double page symbol. So I looked for another way to add this ability to view source, and found a page where I guy had developed a little JavaScript that needed to be added to my iPhone. He suggested I email it to my iPhone, then copy and paste it to a specific location. So I googled how to copy and paste on an iPhone. Guess what? Found another page where I was instructed to drag "this link" to the bookmarks bar to give me the ability to cut and paste. I tried all kinds of finger tricks in the email, trying to copy the JavaSCript and finally gave up in complete aggravation. These should be baby steps and I can't make any of them work.
On top of everything else, I can't even get iSafari to have a simple home page. What's up with that /#X%&*\# ?
Very, very frustrated. On a desktop PC I'm very good with all kinds of software and system tools and tweaks. On my groovy new iPhone, I feel like a dope. What happened to the intuitive interface of Apple products? Help?Yes, I'm familiar with the old RTFM rule, but I tried four different times to retrieve that manual form the Apple site. Each time got an error message that something was wrong, that they were working on it, and to please come back later. On the fifth try last night, I got through and successfully downloaded the user guide. Woo hoo!

I right click on the photo the picture library opens but on the photo line it's a Firefox document..???

I use a Imac with OS 10.6.7. I've just uploaded Firefox 4. I had Firefox 3 already but do not use it often. I've been using Safari. I imported bookmarks from Safari to Firefox, but the bookmarks bar in Firefox did not change to match that of Safari, and that's where the important bookmarks are. Any ideas?
Also, I can't find where to choose Firefox as my default browser.Copy the files from the old Profile into the new Profile, replacing the existing files that are in the new Profile. That will make your new installation just like the old one.
Or if you just want your bookmarks, copy only the places.sqlite file from the old Profile into the new Profile. -
Some how all are photos from Iphotos got places on the bookmarks bar. Anyone know how to remove them from here?
What bookmarks bar?
Is this an iPhoto for iOS query? -
Why can't I add a bookmark to subfolders in the bookmark bar by drag-n-drop?
Way back in the '90s, there used to be a Mac browser (IE?) that allowed you to drag a URL from the address bar, hover it over a bookmark folder in the bookmark bar, and it would spring open to expose all the subfolders, and allow you to drop the new URL into any of the exposed subfolders.
This remains, without a doubt, the most effective, straightforward, simple, and efficient way of filing bookmarks I've ever experienced.
Why doesn't Safari use this system? Or does it, and I just don't know how to enable it? If it doesn't, how can I suggest this to the Safari team?
Cheers,
LloydSafari 7 looks likely to allow dragging from the address bar to folders in the sidebar - although no mention of drag/drop onto sub-folders in the bookmarks (favorites) bar. But there is a + button just to the left, which may allow '1-click' adding to sub-folders, Reading List etc (more here)

During the day yesterday, the bookmarks I had in Safari disappeared, as well as the bookmark bar. In preferences I still have the "show bookmark bar always" option marked. When I hit the bookmark symbol, to create the bookmarks the display has changed and it looks like it is creating a new bookmark, but when I go into bookmarks it is no longer there.
Tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Safari off then back on.
Give iCloud a minute or two to sync your bookmarks. -
upon installing firefox 10, my runescape toolbar is now above the navigation bar. i would like to be able to return it to its rightful place below the bookmarks bar.

Check and tell if its working.
Not related to your problem but some of your Firefox Plugins are out-dated

How do I get the number of new RSS articles to show in the bookmark bar?
I have Apple as one of my Bookmarks in my Bookmark bar. On my eMac at school, whenever there was a new Apple Hot News article, I would get a number next to my Apple that would let me know there was new Apple News. I can't figure out how to set that up on my new MacBook so I know when new Apple News is posted. What do I need to do to show the number of new articles in my Bookmark Bar?
ThomThanks. I thought that was all I had to do and thought I had the Bookmark Bar checked off to alert me. I just checked my preferences again and it wasn't checked off. I guess now I just wait.
Is there anything specific I need to do for the Apple Hot News site? Do I need to subscribe to the RSS feed or anything like that?

My PC's motherboard has fried and as such I am working of a beatup laptop. I have a device allowing me to hookup my sATA drive to my laptop and would like to find my bookmarks I store in the bookmark bar without losing the one on my laptop.
Thanks. The bookmarks are stored in a file called places.sqlite in the profile folder. This file is not viewable in a text editor.
One way to do this would be to create a new profile (Firefox stores user data in the profile folder), you can then copy the bookmarks and other user data such as passwords to the new profile. You will then have access to the data from the PC and will still have your current laptop data in its own profile.
For details on doing this see Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows and Recovering important data from an old profile. -
The option is to set text, text and pictures, or pictures but it affects both bars and how to get the old version back because I just wanted a stupid addon that I didn't even need and now is firefox just stuck this way. I know it's better to have the new version for security or whatever but the new features are bad for me personally I can't use this program how can I get the old version again please help. Or at least help me fix my bookmarks bar it was carefully made so I can do my work but now it has been destroyed and it can't get rid of the icons without getting rid of Home Refresh Stop icons and also the Bookmarks dropdown menu button can't be removed from the bookmarks bar?
So if the bookmarks toolbar is fixed up you don't need to go back to Firefox 4. That's easy.
This styling will change the bookmark folders to blue (most common) and the few bookmarks to red. Most would have short names 1-4 characters. Install the "Stylish" extension and then the style(s) suggested below.
* Stylish :: Add-ons for Firefox<br>https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/
* Bookmarks Toolbar Fx4 Blue/Folders, Red/Bookmarks - Themes and Skins for Browser<br>http://userstyles.org/styles/46947
Additional styling suggestions
* Scrollbar Menu - Themes and Skins for Browser - userstyles.org<br>http://userstyles.org/styles/52
* Scrollbar Context Menu - Themes and Skins for Browser<br>http://userstyles.org/styles/54
The drop-down at the end wouldn't be there as long as everything fits on the row.
:Once you start using styles you will really like them because you can control/modify/use them independently as building blocks as opposed to someone elses full theme design or extension.
I fail to see how the above is sketchy
# Install the "Stylish" extension
# Install the suggested Style
The advantage of a style is that they are very small compared to extensions, and if you don't like they way it looks, you can modify it. Try to do that with an extension.
The suggested style shows folders in blue, and bookmarklets or bookmarks in red used as buttons.
The deiconizer extension looks rather hard to read, seems rather large for what it does, and it has space wasting drop downs which are meaningless, simply left click to show the folder.
it can't get rid of the (bookmark/folder) icons without getting rid of Home Refresh Stop icons and also the Bookmarks dropdown menu button can't be removed from the bookmarks bar?
The Home button would show as text ("Home") with the style change, as for Refresh ("F5") and Stop("Esc") the keyboard shortcuts work better for me anyway and have never included them on my toolbars. I keep the Home button to the left of the Location bar anyway so it shows an icon.
For those that really need an earlier version of Firefox, find your system and the Firefox version you want in releases, download and start the install.
* ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
When reinstalling Firefox from a download, Firefox must be down once the installation starts. When the installation finishes, don't let the install start firefox for you. Instead end the install and start Firefox in your normal manner, thus preventing creating a new profile which does not have your bookmarks cookies, etc (but your old profile would still be around and would).
