Automatically logged on to neighbor's network

Hello people,
A question:
Whenever my own wireless network is down for whatever reason, i turn on my computer and I get a logged-on WiFi icon in my menu-bar. Turns out I am automatically logged on to my neigbor's open network. I then have to manually re-connect to my own (i.e. type in password).
How do I prevent my computer from automatically going on to the neigbor's network when mine is down?
Greetings,
Dax

Hi Dax,
I'm on 10.4 but think it is similar in 10.3. Try System Prefs -> Network -> Configure Airport.
I have an option to join Automatic or Preferred Networks. There is also an Options button. This gives you the option to be prompted before joining an open network or to just join without asking.
If you choose to just join preferred networks you can add only your own and remove your neighbours network.
Hope this helps in 10.3, can't see it being too different.

  • Automatically logging into someone else's network

There are several networks in my office complex, including my own Belkin N wireless. Every time I start up my G5, the HWUN1A Wireless utility automatically connects to somebody else's open network, rather than to mine. Mine requires a password, the other one doesn't. Is there a way to set network preferences or otherwise prevent logging onto my neighbor's network -- and always choose my network instead?

Yes, it appears as "USB Ethernet (en1)"
When I click on "Advanced" there are several panes available, but none allow me to do anything about network preferences. (I'm familiar with how to do this with Airport, as I also have a PowerBoook I use at the office.)
I've written to Hawking Technology's support people about this issue, thinking there may be something I'm missing in their network utility, but have never had a reply from them.

  • Automatically log-on to a captive network? possible? how?

I like the new feature that lion alway opens a window for the log-on in a captive network. Till now I used an applescript to do that for me, which I had to start manually. As I have to log-on to my network everytime I reactivate my MacBook from stand-by I would really be interested to find a way to fill in the username and password to the form that pops up now automatically. Is this possible? Or is there maybe some plug-in that would do this?
Thanks for any helpful answers in advance!

it doesn't need to be permanent. connect to the server so that it shows up on the desktop. and while it's there add it to login items.

  • Macbook keeps connecting to neighbor's network

When starting up, or even waking from "sleep," why does my computer always seem to prefer trying to log into my neighbor's network rather than my own? His (or hers) is not password protected while mine is. Is that it? Whenever I realize it has happened, I quickly switch over to mine, which the computer does quickly and without complaint. But I always seem to have to do this ever since I switched over to the latest OS (is it Mountain Lion? I lose track of the various cats. 10.8.2)
I've gone to Network Preferences>Advanced and dragged my router to the head of the line and even put my neighbor's last, but that doesn't seem to help. Is there a way I can make my computer ignore that one?

Has your neighbor ever had their service suspended by the provider due to detection of downloading kiddie p*%n?
Someone needs to tell them service providers and police authorities take that seriously.  Plus people can tap into the data flow and steal financial days.

  • Automatically logging onto Firefox using a Proxy and Network ID and Password

I am using Firefox on a University network, where I have been provided with a username and password. However, I am prompted to enter them every time I open Firefox.
How can I make it so that those details are stored in Firefox and it automatically logs me in every time I open Firefox, without having to change the Proxy settings? (currently set as "Automatically detect settings")

Yeah, I had done everything correctly.  Turns out the problem was on the server end, though I didn't get an explanation exactly why applications run through OSX didn't work, including Safari, but 3rd party browsers did...

  • Computer will not automatically log into AirPort Network

I have a MacBook Air, running OS 10.7.5.  It will not automatically log into my AirPort Extreme, running Version 7.7.2 (I have to affirmitevely go in and choose my network every time I wake the computer up or open it).  Another computer in my home, a Toshiba, has the same issue.
The Mac will automatically log in to other networks that I regualrly use (e.g., at work and at friends houses), and the default on the Mac is set for automatic LogIn.
The iPhones in my home do not have this issue.
    Any suggestions?

    You're not alone.
I've had this problem since I unwrapped my brand new Mac Pro.
Even a clean install didn't cure it.
    Read this thread; http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1284484&tstart=0
My 'cure', which has yet to prove itself over 24hrs, is to:
Set up a New Location in System Prefs / Network.
Deactivate all other connectivity options (Ethernet/BT/FW) bar AirPort.
Move AirPort to the top of the list.
Uncheck the 'Ask to join new networks' and 'Show AirPort Status in Menu Bar' checkboxes.
    Apply settings.
I'll discover whether it works tomorrow morning, when I wake up my Mac.

  • Touch wants to automatically connect to my neighbors network

Hi, I just changed my router wireless security to WPA Personal and now after I connect my Touch to my network it won't stay connected and when I wake it I find it is connected to my neighbors unsecured network. I click on the blue > button and click Forget this network, do the whole thing again then when I wake it it is again connected to that unsecured network. How can I wipe that thing off the map?
    Thanks

  • HT3819 Home Share issue: I have a Mac and Apple TV. Both are log into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view purchased movies on AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers. Itunes sidebar-no

Has anyone else found solution to Apple devices not 'seeing' each other on Home Share?  I have a Macbook Air (new Nov'12) and Apple TV (new Dec'12). Software updated on both. Both are logged into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view movies purchased from iTunes on my AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers... and ... Itunes sidebar does not have a 'Shared' area at all.  Help please as without this functionality, my Apple TV only provides portal to purchased (i.e. Netflix,...) content which I can get from Wii or Xbox.
I have already tried the following without success:
    1. Homeshare DID work the first day after I setup Apple TV... but the next day it has not worked since then.
    2. Powered off 30 sec then re-started (Apple TV & Macbook & iTunes login)
    3. Checked Firewall settings per Home Sharing troubleshooting guide (correct settings)
    4. Turning on Photostream in iPhoto and selecting iPhoto within iTunes and then checking to see if Photostream shows anything on AppleTV (it shows 'on' for my iTunes account but 'Zero' pictures found ... despite the >3,000 pictures showing avail in iTunes).
I also have 'Remote" app on my iPhone 4, with Home Sharing turned on (same Wifi network)... it has a very similar message as the Apple TV and same result that despite all devices having HomeShare 'on' they cannot see each other:  "Remote will automatically find the iTunes libraries and Apple TVs that have Home Sharing turned on using the account xxxx (it lists my correct itunes account name)."

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

  • Automatically Logging out of my web hosting service

I am using my web hosting service with Firefox 3.6.13 and I keep getting automatically logged out of the web hosting service. I contacted tech support for the web hosting service and they said it was a problem with the browser - cookies/settings/etc - I couldn't find any solution. I need to be able to set Firefox so I can stay logged into my web hosting indefinitely. Thank You.

On a certain website, I like to work in tabs. I mainly am on the forums, and will have multiple threads up on tabs. However lately, every time I open a tab I get logged out.
If I stay and work in ONE tab I am fine, but if I open a second tab I am automatically logged out.
I have cleared cache, cookies, and all browsing history.
I have gone in and deleted/renamed the cookies.sqlite file, restarted Firefox, and that still doesn't help.
I upgraded to the newest version of Firefox, and still doesn't work right.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Automatic discovery of Vista PC on network?

So I have the MacBook, and I have a Windows Vista desktop. They can see each other fine; on my Mac I can click "Go -> Connect to Server..." and put in my Vista PC's IP address and it will come up. Similarly, I can click "Start" and type in my Mac's IP address and it will come up.
My question is why don't they automatically come up in their respective network browsers? Why can't I go to "Go -> Network" and see my PC?
Would appreciate some tips on how to get that going. It's not a huge annoyance that it doesn't work, but it would be nice if it did.
    Thanks in advance.

If there was any error message that might help others give you an answer.
I would also go to the PC Firewall and add Port 631 to the File and Printer Sharing option.
I take it that the Firewall is allowing File and Printer Sharing as you said the option was turned On ?
    Otherwise I have nothing else.

  • Automatically log onto Windows drive

My current setup includes my Videos folder having an alias which goes over to one of my Windows computers, where a lot of my media is stored, so that I can use Front Row with all of that video.
My question is, can I have OS X automatically log onto that volume? Currently, I need to connect when starting up or coming back from sleep. It's only a couple of steps (Network>computer name>Connect or Go>connect to folder), I'd still rather have it done automatically.
And if it's in iFelix's FAQs, I apologize. I admit to not having patience to reading everything
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    hudgie

Hi hudgie, if you mount the volume then drag it to your dock beside the trash, it won't mount automatically on login but when you click it, it will. You could also try something like automount maker,or the like.

  • AirPort Express Sees Neighbor's Network But Not Mine!

    Hi everyone!
I’m a complete newbie to wireless networking but expected my AE to “just work.” It doesn’t, so far.
I plugged-in my cable ethernet cable and USB printer cable to the AE. I then plugged the AE into the electrical socket. Got a green light.
After multiple attempts and even performing a “factory default reset,” the AirPort Utility scan will NOT recognize the AE. Am I correct in thinking that it should?
In Network in System Preferences, I can connect to my neighbor’s wireless network but when I create a new network, all I get is a green AE light and the note that “AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet.”
So, I have no wireless Internet connection. The cable internet connection (cable ethernet direct to the iMac) is working fine.
I’ve read in other discussions that a problem may exist in using AE and 10.5.6. Yes? No?
Anyway, if some kind soul would help me figure out what’s going on and how to get AirPort Utility to recognize my AE, I would be eternally grateful!
Please advise and don’t hesitate to point out my errors in trying to set up my AE. I need to learn and so do others.
    Sincerely,
    flyboy01

Welcome to the discussions forum Andy.
After multiple attempts and even performing a “factory default reset,” the AirPort Utility scan will NOT recognize the AE. Am I correct in thinking that it should?
Yes. But you have to select its network in your Airport menulet - after the reset it will appear as "Apple Network xxxxxx" where xxxxxx are the last three bytes of its MAC address. If you're connected to your neighbor's network while running Airport Utility, it won't see your Express.
Assuming you've done this already and AU still doesn't see your Express, read on.
Sometimes cable modems get confused when you connect different devices to it. Reset your cable modem (power it down for a while). Remove the Ethernet cable from your iMac and leave it removed. Perform another "hard reset" of your Express then connect it to the cable modem. Power up the cable modem.
Does Airport Utility see the Express now?
Yes: Answer the setup questions in Airport Utility and you're done.
No: I'd wonder if your cable modem still hasn't been properly reset. Try leaving it powered off for the better part of an hour. While it's cooling look for a reset button and try to find documentation addressing how to reset it. Also, reset your Express again. Couldn't hurt.
Still not working? Gnash teeth for a while and curse the gods of wireless. Then, create a new, temporary user account on your iMac. Log out of your account and log in under the new account. Any changes?
Still not working? Post back because someone will happily point out that both of us missed something obvious.

  • Neighbor's Network

I am currently running two Macs attached via Airport Extreme. My next door neighbor seems to have a similiar setup with a Linksys wireless router. Everytime I switch screennames, my mac switches to my neighbor's network. Is there any way to keep this from happening? It seems to be more of an issue with the older computer (933 MHz G4, running Panther) than my newer one (1.8Ghz iMac, running Tiger).
    Any ideas?
    prechrchet

I believe you can go to your pref. and opt for preferred as you AEBS, as opposed to automatic.
