I'm preparing literally hundreds (if not more) of AI files for litho, and they MUST be a percentage of a spot (Pantone) colour PLUS a process breakdown (too long to explain why) -
example: make an object(let's say a star) 40% 287, and add 20% magenta. Right now I overprint the 20% magenta manually (duplicate object, make copy 20% magenta overprint the 40% 287 below). When I say manually, I've made an action for it, but on complex files it still is time-consuming - any ideas?
(Sub-question: I wonder if something could be done after saving when processing/trapping etc. through Prinergy)

Ryan, that's correct, libraries are external files so they are not editable unless you open the actual file in AI. Kinda confusing since they look virtually identical to the normal swatch or graphic style panel.
To get a 60% breakdown of the original graphic style you could set the object to 60% opacity (that wouldn't work if you are layering it on top of another object).

I have some single layer images using cmyk (black only) + Pantone Process Blue U that will eventually be printed on a sheetfed offset press. A ballpark estimate would suffice for this low budget book, so I thought I'd give soft proofing a try. I'm therefore interested in understanding Photoshop's implementation of colour management for spot colour channels so as to have a less vague idea of the approximations this workflow involves.
Moreover, I'm stuck on exporting to pdf to let the client evaluate my conversions of the original rgb scans. Photoshop seems to layer an Euroscale Uncoated v2 overprinting image on top of a spot coloured image whose alternate colour space is "Calibrated RGB". What baffles me is that the pdfs display consistently in Acrobat 8 and 9 but rather differently from the Photoshop document.
Here come my questions:
1) Am I right in saying that these programs still don't support colour profiles involving spots? If so, are Adobe people willing to comment on the relevant intricacies?
2) Which colour profiles and colour conversions do Photoshop and Acrobat use to display such documents?
3) Which software tools will allow me to convert the Photoshop documents to an output profile for hard proofing?
4) Short of alternatives, when only K is needed and as long as each spot colour bears a decent resemblance to a cmy primary, how well will the profiling software deal with a cmyk target printed substituting the inks on press?

As far as I know …
1) Photoshop uses the Spot setting from your Color Settings (Edit – Color Settings) to display spot channels (and one can use gray-profiles or the K-channel of CMYK-profiles for that); the Solidity one can set manually, but one should bear in mind that even a 100% solid spot channel does not knock out the process channels.
As for the actual physical properties of the color and its mixing with the other colors I’m afraid Photoshop produces a pretty rough simulation – profiles for more than four colors are considerably more complicated and would, if I’m not mistaken, preclude much of Photoshop’s functionality.
2) If you pass unprofiled Files between programs they will be displayed using the programs’ respective Color Settings.
And your screen profile will be employed in the process naturally … but you might want to read up on color management if you want to know more about all that.
As to why the display differs between Acrobat and Photoshop it would appear that Acrobat use the RGB-setting for displaying spots and not an extra setting like Photoshop.
3) Photoshop is capable of separating files – but I may not understand what you’re driving at.
4) Epson-proofers using the latest generation of inks for example have a fairly wide gamut and should be able to simulate a lot of Pantone colors, so you might want to contact your provider to make sure if such a workaround is necessary at all.

Is there a way to make the colour picker in the toolbar bigger?
I've been using Illustrator for some time now and find this part of the software to be annoying as I frequently mis-click this tiny area and the switching between foreground and background colour is easily mismanaged and you end up changing the colour of the one you didn't intend and then have to make two clicks to remedy that.
Do any other users find this to be a badly designed part of the software?
Also, while I'm here I suggest that when in the colour creation dialogue the 'preview' tick can somehow be switched to on as default.
I can understand that there are situations where it might be better not to see your colour change in the document in real time, but to have to click this (again very small) tick box again and again feels like bad design.
^ both the above are frequent tasks for many users
Interested to hear if there's any work arounds to fix this.

I do use x and shift x and also / to make a no stroke or no fill. But / is a long way across the keyboard. I guess I could reassign that function to a key that's nearer x.
I think the real annoying bit is not only the small size of the two overlapping squares, but the fact that they change size depending on which one is selected. So the button that is not selected is encroached by the one that is selected (and overlaps it). This to me seems counter to interface design - ie, make the switch button smaller. Worse still is the no fill / no stroke button; insanely tiny.
I would gladly redesign this corner of Illustrator for Adobe, and I'm sure quite a few other people would too!

How to convert a spot colour to a spot colour.

I'm curious to know how do i go about converting a spot colour to a spot colour e.g. pms 188 to pms 281?
so therefore it changes from 2 colours to 1 colour, I'm using Acrobat x Professional on MAC, I dont have any other software of adobe's just this.
Can someone please suggest any quick ways i can do this without the possible need for plugins or extensions, if there is a plugin or extension that can do this please can you list them.

IDCS6 MAC OSX: trying to make a map to new spot script

Hello all.
I have a plethora of InDesign files that contain a custom-named spot color called PMS 295. So that the colour can be properly mapped using our RIP it needs to have the correct name "PANTONE 295 C" but the correctly renaming the source of the offending colour has the potential to affect other work. I'm after a script that will make the properly named colour and then map the PMS 295 colour to the correctly named colour.
For ONCE, I have tried to do this myself, and I have the first part sorted! I can add the colour to the document using the following snippet of code:
app.activeDocument.importAdobeSwatchbookSpotColor ("PANTONE 295 C");
But getting the ink manager to map PMS 295 to this newly added colour is doing my head in. Is this something that is possible to script?

@Colly – sometimes we use descriptive variables to illustrate something. The "my" in the name is always an indication, that a variable is in play, that has to be defined elsewhere… We could debate now, if that is "good style" or not, but no. I don't do that right now ;-)
It's kind of "dummy" code and not meant to work immediately.
In the case of "myDocument", you could use an additional line of code to define the variable "myDocument" at the start of the snippet and leave all other incidences of "myDocument" unchanged in the code:
var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
or you work with index 0 in an array like fashion:
var myDocument = app.documents[0];
or in a collection like fashion ("documents" is a collection of single document objects, and if you want to point out that to you, use the following syntax):
var myDocument = app.documents.item(0);
or you could have worked with the name of an open document (amongst others):
var myDocument = app.documents.itemByName("MyDocumentName.indd");
There are other examples as well…

Can't make or receive calls iphone 6 plus

I bought my iPhone 6 plus the day it came out and I loved it! Until yesterday at around 9:30pm I was unable to make or receive phone calls. I am with Verizon and the 1x shows where lte should be. I've been on the phone with Verizon's tech support for two hours. Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?

I thought so to KiltedTim. However it is communicating with Verizon's network and they have no known issues in the area.

Make layer colour labels more powerful

Two apparently simple changes would make the layer colour/color feature very useful.
I'm talking here about the colour label which can be assigned to a layer by rightclicking on a layer's show/hide eye.
1. allow several layers to be assigned a colour in one action.
For no apparent reason, the colours are greyed out if you rightclick with several layers/groups selected. When I'm colouring layers, it is to identify layers which have something in common. Selected several and then colouring them is far quicker and more natural than select one, colour it, select another, colour it... ad nauseum (and this is not something I need to do in a simple PSD, so I really do mean ad nauseum.)
2. add a command to select all layers of a particular colour.
The similar layers I labeled with a colour in point 1 often need the same changes made to them. If I could select all the red-labeled text layers and increase their size by a point, then select all the yellow-labeled shape layers and nudge them down a couple of pixels, then select all the green-labeled shape layers and apply a different layer style it would save me literally hours some weeks.

I was unaware of this feature until today (very cool). Glad I learned something today.

Turns out this may have been caused by having multiple IP addresses on one NIC

How do you make the colour tone of the adjustment brush in camera raw white?

I am using Camera Raw (Version7.0.0.308) in CS6. The adjustment brush does not have a slider for the colour tone but jumps from blue to yellow with the +, - keys. How do I set it to white? Currently all my adjustment come out either with a yellow tone or a blue tone.

I would update to camera raw 7.4 and install any other updates that show when using Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6.
Then check if you have the same issue.

Exporting as PDF makes huge colour change. Please Help.

I am really hoping someone can help me here. I have an image which has been created in a CMYK document, when I export it as a PNG the colours look perfect, however when I save the file as a PDF the colours also look ok in Adobe Reader. When I email the PDF to my phone for example or to another person on a different computer the colour shift is huge as you can see here:
The image on the left is how it should be, I am not the only person who uses this MAC so I think somewhere some settings have been changed and I cant figure it out. I am at a real loss as to what I can try to resolve this. I appreciate any help that you can give me.

I wouldn't expect a mobile screen to display CMYK values accurately or the same as they display in Adobe Reader on your computer.
How did you create the image on the right? What PDF settings did you use when saving as PDF? What app are you using to view the PDF on the mobile device? How about on the other computer? Are both computers' displays calibrated/profiled?
Generally, for PDFs intended to be viewed on a variety of displays, I'd recommend converting to sRGB when saving the PDF.

How to make mail colours follow onto mac from .mac

I have a .mac account with several alisas and in my .mac account i have them colour co-ordinated so I can see which email alisas most of my trafic is coming from.
I have a work one(pink) , home one(blue), google one etc, you get the picture. Is there anyway to get the colours to come through on my mail as at the minute it doesn't work.
Also the stationery feature, is it any good, as in response time, slowing the machine, font problems, corruption sending mail etc
