Automatically Renaming Songs

My iTunes automatically renames songs for me. For example, I just imported a new CD yesterday. I renamed the tracks from Track 01 (etc) to the names listed on the CD case. But when I click on them to play or change more information, the names change back to Track 01, etc. Can anyone help me stop iTunes from doing this?

hmmm...yeah, that's a problem because I don't know how to strip the tags off of them.
Try this: simply convert one of the songs to mp3, this is just to see if it works. Go to edit > preferences > advanced > importing and set it to mp3. Right-Click on the song and "Convert Selection To MP3". This will create duplicates of those songs (one in AAC and MP3), and see if the MP3s can retain the information.
NOTE: these MP3s have degraded sound quality because you've made a copy of a copy, though some people can't detect the quality loss. Anyway, this is just to see if it works.
If it still doesn't work, then strip them of their ID3 tags as I relayed above. Then try to see if they can retain the info this time.

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically "correcting" song info from the iTunes Store?

    I frequently rename songs that I download from the iTunes Store for various reasons. For example, when I bought Pet Shop Boys' album Electric on CD, I changed the album name of the pre-release single "Vocal" from "Vocal - Single" to "Electric", and also changed the track numbers to reflect its position on the album. The track grouped with the other tracks that I had copied from the CD, and everything seemed fine.
    However, at random times, I have found that iTunes will attempt to "correct" my changes, leading to some very bizarre circumstances. With Electric, after having the album appear correctly for over two months, it suddenly messed up. The album was still labelled as "Electric", but it appeared in alphabetical order under V, as if all of the tracks had "Vocal - Single" in the album field. It also changed Vocal to track 1, which would be correct for the single, but not for the album. I changed everything back, and while it was fixed on iTunes, the problem persisted on my iPhone - this time, creating two duplicate albums both organized under "Vocal - Single", with an interface that looked like the artist view rather than the album view. I had to delete the album completely from my iPhone and re-sync it to make the changes carry over. This has happened before with other albums where I combine iTunes Store tracks with tracks ripped from CD.
    This has also occurred when I've tried to compile multiple albums, this time entirely bought from the iTunes Store, into one album. To use another Pet Shop Boys example, there were three EP-style singles released on iTunes in support of the album Elysium. Rather than having two or three tracks each labelled as "Winner - EP", "Leaving - EP", and "Memory of the Future - EP", I reorganized them into one album called "Elysium: B-sides", and set each EP as "discs" 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Again, this worked for several months, and then, at the same time as when Electric messed up, iTunes renamed all of the tracks as "Winner - EP" and changed all of my track listings to match the original EPs they had come from. As I clicked "Get Info" on each track in iTunes however, the information snapped back to what I had input, but it was still slightly corrupted and had to be redone in order to get it back in the correct alphabetical and chronological order in my library. Even after I changed everything back, it wouldn't return to correct alphabetical order on my iPhone until I added "Elysium: B-sides" to the "Sort Album" field.
    This is not a new issue. I've had the same problem with other iTunes Store downloads under earlier versions of iTunes, OSX, and iOS. The "corrections" always seem to occur randomly. Is this automatic renaming a "feature"? And if so, how do I turn it off so I can organize the music that I've bought the way I want to?

    Hi Mhwal.  I think this may help you.
    Here's a test for you to try.
    Make sure your iTunes library is updated with your edited album names;
    Find a song on your iPhone where the album name is incorrect;
    Delete the song from your iPhone;
    On your iPhone go to "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and tap your Apple ID (highlighted in blue).
    Tap "Sign Out";
    Go back to your iTunes library and select the song/album that you want back on your iPhone;
    The iPhone should now show your edited album tag;
    Once your done you can sign back to "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and sign back in.  Your edits will hold.
    In addition, this also works with artist pictures.  I did not like the stock images iTunes associated with my artists - I wanted album art instead.  After you sign out of your Apple ID, when you move a song/album from your iTunes library to your iPhone the FIRST album you move over will be associated with that artist.
    For example, I have seven AC/DC albums but I want the cover of "Back in Black" to be associated with AC/DC on my iPhone's artist listing.  After I've signed out of my Apple ID, I transfer "Back in Black" to my iPhone and then the other six albums in any order.  "Back in Black" will be the album picture associated with AC/DC on the artist page.
    Just remember, after your changes you can sign back into iTunes through "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and your changes to edited albums and artist cover art should hold.
    I hope this helps!

  • Renaming Songs

    I've done a search on this topic and read a good deal of the posts about this topic and I haven't found an answer on my own, so I'm hoping someone can help me.
    I've downloaded songs, both off the internet and from CD's and the names won't change. For example, I downloaded a song from the internet... When in the iTunes Music FILE FOLDER it will be the name of whatever song, say "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. So I then go to the iTunes program, go to FILE, then "Add file to library", and add that file. After that it will be in my library. I double-click on the song to play and it will play... BUT, the song title changes to "untitled". I stop the song and RIGHT CLICK on the song, then go to "Get Info". The information comes up and I go to the Info tab. In this tab, it shows me the title, artist, album names, etc... But in the title it says "untitled"...SO, I change it back to "Hey Jude" and click "OK". In my Library, the song is back to "Hey Jude" again... BUT, you know what happens when I click on the song to play? It plays, but the song title goes back to "untitled"... What the **** is wrong? It won't stick with the name I give it!
    So, does anyone know what I should do?

    I've gone through all the files that are being renamed, and all of them have the "read only" box UNchecked.
    I did a search for discussions w/ the topic "Renaming Song" and others similar to that... One of the discussions talked about how WMP will "watch" the files being entered in to the library... And that it is WMP that is automatically changed the names back to the original. So, I opened up WMP, when to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then to the LIBRARY tab. In that tab their is the subject of "Automatic Media Information Updates for Files". In that discussion I read one person said to UNcheck all those boxes to keep WMP from changing all your file names when you try playing them in iTunes. BUT... the thing is, when I went to WMP and went to the Library tab, none of those freakin' boxes were checked!
    So, I thought if WMP has something in the program that automatically changes your file info, then maybe QuickTime has something like that too... I couldn't find anything in QuickTime like that, so I'm still lost on why iTunes is changing the names, and still lost on what to do about it.
    Any suggestions?

  • ITunes Renames Songs

    iTunes keeps renaming songs when I play them. Unfortunately, it is not naming them the right title. I have tried renaming the using "get info", but the next time the song plays it gets automatically renamed. Does anyone know how to "lock" the file once I rename it or have iTunes recognize the right song titles?
    iTunes   Windows XP

    I think you may have to actually rename the song file. There may be an easier way to do this, but here's how I would do it. Go to your library and find one of the incorrectly named songs, right click on this song and choose "Show Song File". When the file opens, find the track you want to rename, hover over it so it's highlighted, then go to the left side of the box and choose rename--a blinking box will form around the song name--if you've got track numbers on the song make sure you keep these when you rename it. Type the new name and hit enter. Close iTunes and reopen it and see if the new name sticks this time.

    -= Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind (written with reference to OSX 10.4 but may not have changed) =-
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • How do I stop itunes from automatically adding songs into my itunes library?

    I want to disable itunes from automatically adding songs into my library.  Every time I sync up my ipod I'm finding miscellaneous debris on it that itunes keeps importing into it.  Theres got to be a way to disable this function but I can't seem to find it in the preferences.   I'm using a 2011 macbook pro with os x 10.6.7.

    I figured out how to change itunes as my default player.  I did this by selecting a new audio file and hitting cmd and I to get info, then I selected the "open with" category.  Inside "open with" theres an option to open the file with quick time, underneath that is the "change all" option.  select that and you will solve this problem if this is a nuisance to anyone else.

  • How do i change over from automatically adding songs to manually adding

    Using 2 ipods on the computer and don't want all of the other person's songs. How can i change from automatically adding songs to manually managing the songs that go on to the ipod. If i plug it in, i'm afraid that i will mess up all my current songs on there. Please help.

    Here are the instructions as they are written in the IPod PDF manual:
    In iTunes, select iPod nano in the source list and click the Summary tab.
    2 In the Options section, select “Manually manage music and video.”
    3 Click Apply.
    Note: When you manage songs and video yourself, you must always eject iPod nano
    from iTunes before you disconnect it.
    To add a song, video, or other item to iPod nano:
    1 Click Music or another Library item in the iTunes source list.
    2 Drag a song or other item to the iPod nano icon in the source list
    Hope this helps you.

  • How can i change the settings so that before download the firefox gives a propmt that same file name already exists, instead of automatically renaming duplicate files by adding .1 suffix?

    When I download a file, if a file of similar name already exists in the same download folder, the firefox downloads the file and renames it by adding numeric .1 to the file name.
    I want the firebox to give me a prompt that similar file already exist, rather than automatically renaming it by adding suffix .1.

    I just installed an update on my iPhone and since then the choice to repeat music, or not, has disappeared and it automatically plays songs and albums on a loop. Anyone know how to make it play an album or song just once?

    Have you tried each of these?

  • Multiple files with same name--- automatic renaming option??

    I am trying to sort my files by adding multiple files to a single folder. However, many have the same filename, and I get the error " there already exists a file with the name "x", please choose another name" etc. I am dealing with thousands of files here that are very tedious to rename individually. Is there an option or program that either disables this block on multiple files with the same name in a common folder, or automatically renames the files as they are placed in the folder?

    i would like all the files to have different names, but not have to do it myself. they are generated my my audio recorder, which automatically names files take1, take2, take3 etc. multiple sessions entail multiple folders, i am trying to consolidate.

  • Automatic renaming of columns

    Hi,
    Due to new busines requirements, I have to comment couple of tables in the query object. When I start compiling after commenting out the conditions and tables, it starts throwing errors BAD BIND VARIABLE xxx NOT DEFINED. Report has automatically renamed a lot of columns by itself, for e.g. a column called name has been renamed to name1. There are PL/SQL programs which refer the column name. Now when I attempt to compile the report it starts throwing the error BAD BIND VARIABLE name NOT DEFINED because it has been renamed to name1, automatically by reports. I am baffelled at this as the columns does not have any relationship to the commented out tables. Is there a way to avoid this.
    Thanks,
    Bharath

    The best way to avoid this is to alias the columns in the query. Whenever you make a change to the query, reports reparses the query. If other columns exist with the same name then a numeric suffix will be added. You could also apply the latest patch set (patch 10), as some fixes were made in this area.
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • How can I stop iTunes automatically renaming tracks incorrectly as soon as they are played?

    iTunes has started renaming some tracks as soon as I play them. It completely changes all the info to a totally different cd. The only way I can change it is to manually change everything back and as I have more than 30000 tracks I don't fancy having to play every single one to see whether iTunes is going to change it to something I have never heard of. Can this automatic renaming be stopped?

    Could it be something with iTunes-Match/iCloud ??
    I've had problems getting "Hide items in the Cloud" and iCloud tick-boxes in View Options to stick.
    An occaisional glance at similar topics on these forums seems to indicate that people are having all sorts of funnies. So, I have severed iTunes from the net (I have Little Snitch) and will wait until things clear up before letting iTunes out of it's kennel again.
