Automatically saving edits in the DNG

One of the reasons I import to DNG is the ability to save my edits directly in the DNG. According to Adobe Tech Support, selecting Automatically wite changes into XMP should do just that. However it does not work.
Using Ctrl + S in library mode is also supposed to write your edits to the header of the DNG. Then you should be able to take ycopy your dng and re-import it in other lightroom environments without concern for copying the entire LRCAT. I have done this with some success. Unfortunately a great deal of the time I get an error message "Writing XMP metadata did not complete successfully" with only a portion of the files containing the edits.
Is there a fix to this bug.
Jim

Hello Ian,
First I thought about the word "bug" and regretted using it immediately after I clicked the post message button. I understand that everything will not be saved. However, when I do get a successful save all the edited information is in the DNG, it can be imported into another version of Lightroom on my notebook without the lrcat. I tried to send you an example of a successful save but the forum will only allow up to a 5mb file and my dng files are all over 20mb
1. All files are in the same directory.
2. None of the files are write protected.
3 All files are on-line (accessible)
The most successful save was 6 out of 30 files selected when I pressed Ctrl+S. Today I have not been able to save any files successfully without the error message.
Just an fyi, I have been using Lightroom since it came out. Unfortunately, until recently I have not been an active forums participant. I have been a professional photographer for 40 years. Originally, Lightroom was such a change in paradigm for me that I wrestled with it constantly. Now I do not know what I would do without it. So now I plan to become more active in the forums community. However, first I need to get answers to all those hidden irritations that have bothered me for a long time. This is one of those irritations.
My purpose wanting to find out why this intermittently works this is that I am also a teacher. I need to be able to edit the files on my computer at my home office and them transfer them to my notebook to take to school for class lectures. I would like to do this without transfering the lrcat and let Lightroom create a new lrcat when I do the import. In addition, my students who have access to Lightroom on the schools computer need to be able to take their dng files, with their edits with them. School policy is to clean the data areas at least weekly. The new semester stars in a couple of weeks and it would be nice if some of my nagging questions can be solved.
Anything you can do to help me figure out why I cannot consistantly save the edits directly in the dng would be really helpful.

  • Anyway to set up automatic saving or recover the project when FCP quit

I am rather perturbed at the fact that the last 5 hours or so of work has gone up in smoke. Not the biggest deal in the world, because I remember most everything. However, is there a way to save automatically or even recover the file before the app quit responding?

Yeah, it can be "apin" in the butt, but having it save every 10 min for me has been great. I can do a lot in 10 min.

  • Editing a DNG file and saving it again as DNG using Photoshop

    Hi everyone,
I have a set of .dng raw images which I would like to edit using Photoshop and save back out as .dng files.  It sounds like a very simple task, but I have been struggling with this for half a day.
To give a concrete example, I have two dng images from the same camera. I want to copy an object from one image and paste it to the other, and then save out the output as a .dng file.  This should take me like 2 minutes in Photoshop, right?
Well, when I open the files, it first brings up the Adobe Camera Raw tool, but this only lets me do very basic edits (I can't figure out how to copy an object from one image to another, let alone perform the necessary edits to blend them seamlessly.).
So I click "Open Image" to get them into Photoshop, where I can do all of my necessary edits (copy and paste, brushes, etc.).  However, after I am finished and I try to save my edits, Photoshop only lets me save the output in .psd (along with other formats) but not dng.  I need to save it back out as .dng, as the next program in our workflow pipeline requires .dng files as input.  So how do I do this simple task?
Why can't I save my resulting image back out as a .dng file?  I tried saving as .psd and then using Adobe DNG converter to turn it into a dng, but it doesn't seem to be able to do that.  I also tried saving as Photoshop RAW, but for some reason the converter can't convert from Photoshop RAW to DNG.  It doesn't make any sense to me.
I know that Photoshop knows my camera parameters because it was able to read the original dng files properly in the first place.  So why can't I read in the .dng image make some edits and then save it?  How are people editing dng files?
    Thanks for your help.

Also, there is no way to turn an image back into raw image data after it has been edited in Photoshop. It would be as difficult as uncooking an egg.
I understand that this is difficult if I am doing arbitrary image editing operations, since those operations may not be properly defined in the RAW space.  But in this case I am cloning pixels from one .dng image to another.  Shouldn't this be possible?
For example, assume we have 2 dng images and we want to take the left half of one and paste it in the same position over the other.  I am not familiar with the dng spec, but at some level it should encode the values at each pixel (perhaps with the appropriate camera curve).  So I just simply want to overwrite the values of one .dng image with values at the same pixels of the other, and since it's the same camera with the same settings used for both this should be possible, right?  In the worst case, I could write a program based on the DNG spec that parses the two dng files, overwrites the necessary pixel information simply using the second image's data, and then writes the dng back out.  But this seems like a complicated way to do something that there should be an Adobe tool to do.
Perhaps it would help if I tell you exactly why I need this for.  We are capturing raw video using the Blackmagic Cinema Camera which outputs a directory full of 2.5k dng images for each take.  We were doing a take of a scene using a tripod, but an otherwise great take was ruined because at one point a crew member poked their head into frame.   So I want to use information from the other dng frames to overwrite this portion of this image to hide this problem.
If these were regular images (.jpg, .tif, .exr) it would take us no time in Photoshop to use the information from the other "good" frames to fix this problem seamlessly.  However, we would like to keep everything in dng format so that I can then read everything into DaVinci Resolve for color grading correctly.   Any idea on how I can do this, if I can't use Photoshop?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

I'm considering buying CC LR/PS package. My camera is Sony a7 - raw ARW. I've been editing using PSE10 and ver 8.7 of the external Adobe DNG converter. Will I be able to open the DNG files in LR with the edits preserved? Will I be able to open the PSD files in LR with the edits preserved? Any import/catalog etc issues between PSE10 and LR?

Lightroom has no problem reading DNG files. Whether the edits you have done to the DNGs you have originally edited in Photoshop Elements 10 I'm not sure. ACR edits made to DNGs are saved in the DNG file itself, as apposed to a XMP sidecar file, so LR should see those edits. At the worst you will get an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the imported DNGs and clicking on that exclamation mark you will get a dialog box asking you to either import settings from disk or overwrite settings. you would select import settings from disk.

  • How can I simplify or Automate saving Photoshop edits back to iPhoto

I am using Photoshop CS3 as my external editor for iPhoto. I am looking for a way to Automate saving the edited pictures back to iPhoto. Currently I use Command W, Click Save, in "Save As" window I change the format from Photoshop to JPEG, click Save, then click Replace, then click OK for my JPEG options window and my edited file is saved back into iPhoto. I know there must be an easier way to do this. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Have you set PS as an external editor?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
What format are the original files?
    Regards

  • With Netscape all of the Webcam shots from live feeds were automatically saved in my cache folder and I could simply open my cache send the saved files into AcDsee and convert them into jpgs, It would save as many as I would allow space for. With firefox

I cant retrieve my images from webcams that are cached any more with mozilla. With netscape all of the live webcam images from live cams were automatically saved in my cache folder and all i had to do was open it send the files to acdsee and turn them into jpgs. It would save them untill the Cache ran out of room no matter how many files or sites I had running. Mozilla seems to save what it wants when it wants and often dose not save any that I can retrieve because I believe it is bulking them into Cache 123 or 4 and those i cant open to retrieve the files. Sometimes it saves 100 or so and sometimes 2 or 3 sometimes 10 or more but i don't seem to have any control over what it does or does not save to retrieve no matter how much space i allow for the cache to save.

You have or had an extension installed (Ant.com Toolbar) that has changed the user agent from Firefox/3.6.3 to Firefox/3.0.12.
You can see the Firefox version at the top and the user agent at bottom of the "Help > About" window (Mac: Firefox > About Mozilla Firefox).
You can check the '''general.useragent''' prefs on the '''about:config''' page.
You can open the ''about:config'' page via the location bar, just like you open a website.
    Filter: '''general.useragent'''
If ''general.useragent'' prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose ''Reset''.

  • How do I stop PE automatically including edited images into the Organiser?

I use the Organiser to keep track of my original raw photographs. I have many thousands of them, so I don't want to clutter up the organiser with the edited versions I produce later on. However, whenever I edit an image, PE automatically includes it in the organiser, and I have to delete it. Also, there are times when I'm working on graphics - labels, invites, cards etc - which also get included in the Organiser, adding to the mess. Is there a way I can turn this feature off?

Thanks for your reply, dj_paige. As to why I only want the originals in the Organiser - well, call it an old man's whim.  I've been creating images for longer than I care to remember and for the last 25 years my career has been in digital animation and effects, so I've spent a quarter of a century faking things with pixels.
But when I take a photograph, that's real. That actually happened. If the sky isn't very blue in the picture, it probably wasn't very blue on the day. Sure, like anyone else I use PE to make beautiful edited versions for my family and friends, but the original raw files are the record of my life, exactly as it was, and the Organiser is my journal.  When I scroll through the pictures (I guess there are about 50,000) I don't want to see anything fake.
Yes, I'm weird, I know. Sorry!

  • I edited RAW files as DNG's and need the xmp files- are they embedded in the DNG files?

I was editing for someone else and the like the xmp files to see the RAW adjustments- I edited them as DNG because that is how I'm used to doing it. Now I know but they want me to supply the xmp files which did not write. Is there a wat to do this or do I need to re edit them as RAW's?

DNG files don't have XMP sidecar files. Everything is written to the header of the DNG. And as far as Lightroom goes, It will be necessary for you to specifically write the data to XMP files. Otherwise the adjustments will only be stored in the catalog.

  • PSE not saving edited files to the organiser

For no apparent reason my PSE 11 application seems to have developed an annoying glitch whereby part way through an editing process it stops doing as requested in the "Save" options, by not saving edited files as version sets of the original file in the Organiser. The files are saved OK to My Pictures and I then get advised that a file is available to import and I have to import each one, stack it with the original, and put the edited file on top. This is driving me nuts as I have about 1000 photos to edit. What is causing this problem? My only thoughts are that I have c.30000 picture files in the Organiser (but this hasn't caused any problems in adding new files)  and that the problem seems to have arisen since I started editing files directly from within an Album.
    Help

It's the first time I see that bug mentionned in PSE11, but it's an acknowledged bug in PSE12.

You can't disable the Organizer but if you don't check the box, you don't have to do it next time, this choice is 'sticky'. If it's not for you, I suggest that you delete the editor preferences (menu Edit/preferences, general in recent PSE versions), you have a button to click on.

Will the book automatically download onto the iPad once tihis is done and I open my account on the iPad?

YOu can also use Bluefire Reader for reading books that need an Adobe ID. There are several ways to transfer a book to your iPad. One way is to email the acsm file, open the email on the iPad, and "Open in ... ". Another way is to use an app like Dropbox. The third way is to connect your iPad to your computer, open iTunes, select the iPad, and under  Settings select Apps. Scroll down to the File Sharing apps, select the app you want the book on, on the right select Add, navigate to where the book is on your computer, and select it. Open the app on your iPad and it should load.

  • Saving Edited pics from the project bin

I am a little rusty as I havent used my PSE 9 for quite some time and I cant remember how to save the files that have been edited in the project bin.  I click on File - Save As........But it will only allow me to save one pic at a time.  Thats it.  Can someone please refresh my memory on this.  I may be doing it all wrong..

You need to double click on your main image and then drag your second image up from the project bin. That creates separate images on separate layers.

  • How can I stop TextEdit from automatically saving as .txt

When I use TextEdit to save an HTML file, it automatically saves it as .txt instead of .html. How can I stop this?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem. Using plain text format, when I save my ".html" file after making edits, it is automatically saved as a ".txt" file.
I have the "Add ".txt" extension automatically to plain text files" option unchecked as well.
This is very frustrating because I have to then go into finder to change the extension of the file back to ".html" before I can preview my changes in a web browser.
Please let us know the status of this; is this being worked on or do we need to just find another application for working on ".html" files?
