Automatically selecting Network after sleep?

I have just changed my network to include a WPA password (it was wide open to abuse by friendly neighbours before that!), but after lots of configurating of base stations and express base stations, my PowerBook no longer automatically connects to my network when I open it up?
Does anyone know the simple solution to this? I know it's not a big deal but I have kinda got into the (lazy) expectation of being on the network a few seconds after opening my machine up.
Thanks in anticipation for any help.

PowerBook G4 (15/1gig/512ram)   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I tried the solution offered in the second thread and it doesn't help my situation. After going to Preferences>Network>Airport>"By default, join:" I have to switch to Automatic for "Apply Now" to not be grayed out.
I then clck "Apply Now", then switch to "Preferred networks" and click "Apply Now" and I still have no network selected after waking up from sleep.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Until I started experimenting with WEP I didn't have any problems. I've turned WEP off again and still have the problem.

  • G580(2189) Wi-Fi doesn't want to connect to a network after sleep.

    Hi.
My G580(2189) don't want to connect to a Wi-Fi network after sleep. It's not just my network at home, but at work and other points of interest as well. It usually after a reboot it works again. And sometimes, al tho rarely after just going back to sleep and waking it up again.
I've tried updating drivers, but always been confused to what hardware is being used in this laptop since it just says "broadcom" or something.
I did update my device to Win 8.1. But I'm pretty sure I had this problem before that tho.
And I tried to contact Lenovo support, since I'm not really a forum-kind-of-guy. But their support site it so confusing for simple person to person contact.
Tanks in advance for any advice.

  • System does not automatically reconnect to wifi network after sleep/restart

My iMac G4 (2GB RAM, 10.5.1, AirPort Extreme) does not automatically reconnect to my wife network after waking from sleep or restart. I just recently switched the iMac from a wired to wireless set-up though the machine has always had the AirPort card. In wired mode, it always automatically found the network.
Network preferences have the "Ask to join new networks" checkbox selected. Below the checkbox it reads "Known networks will be joined automatically."
My wireless router is Linksys WRT150N, security type is PSK and encryption method is AES key.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem, the only way i can connect to my wireless network is to restart the computer, and open safari immediately. Then once it goes to sleep or i shut the notebook, i have to restart it again to use the internet. It's driving me nuts, and nobody knows how to fix it. I've tried firefox (it didn't help) and my sisters macbook connects just fine to my network, so it has to be a network setting. I'm going to schedule an appointment with a mac store tomorrow. so I'll post again when they fix it for me. hopefully i will understand how they solve the problem so i can post it to you guys

Macbook Air with OS X 10.8.2 not automatically connecting to known wifi network after sleep

If you are using WEP as a security on your router that is why it won't connect. WEP is so old school and very insecure that Apple has made it so there WiFi cards won't connect to WEP. It might as well be wide open. You can try that. Take all security, WEP/WPA/WPA2, off your router and see if it connects.
If it does then use either WPA or better WPA2.

  • MacBook fails to connect to wireless network after sleep mode

My MacBook fails to reconnect to my wireless network after waking up.
After turning on my MacBook it establishes a decent connection to whatever wireless network I choose (mostly at home). When I close the lid and open it again the network connection is lost and is only reestablished after reboot.
Hopefully someone has a solution as this is very annoying.

Instead of a reboot go to your Wireless Menu icon and select "Turn Airport Off".
Wait a second and "Turn Airport On."
For me this has been a problem for about 2 years. This is much faster than a reboot!

  • Problems with networking after sleep since March 1st EPI firmware update

    Hi,
After the new EPI firmware upgrade of my macbook pro (4 months old) a problem that I had 3 months ago re-appeared again :
when I received my laptop (Lion, fully updated) a few months ago it had problems getting internet access after waking from sleep : it could detect the wifi-network, it was connected and when I tried to ping -for example- google.com in terminal it would answer. This means my network was working and DNS was working too...
Only when opening safari, or software update or any other program that wants to go online, it would give me a 'no internet connection' message. After 3 minutes or so, it would work again (wihtout doing anything). I tried renewing the DHCP lease, moving the order of interfaces, re-adding the networks after deleting but nothing helped.
The problem back then was solved after a firmware upgrade, and it would be online 2 sec after waking from sleep.
After this week's firmware upgrade the problem came back......
Anyone have any suggestions, or anybody know if Apple is working on it again?
    Thanks,
    Koen

For me the problem is solved now.....last night software upgrade popped up with "another" EFI-firmware upgrade, and after this it worked again....too bad I didn't look at version number. But I'm happy I wasn't the only one with this problem....
For the questions above : this was abviously firmware related since it happened directly after the first update. If something has worked and nothing changed in the peripherals the problem is in hte thing that DID change...the firmware. I was surfing after solutions and I did see that there is a problem for some people with the way the OS passes on the DNS (so when pinging, the DNS is picked up directly or something, but in applications such as safari.... it grabs the settings from the OS somewhere). There was a terminal-based solution to reset this setting but by the time I wanted to try it the frimware upgrade popped up....but maybe it can help others...

  • Delay recognizing network after sleep

    Good day,
Forgive me if this question has been raised before, I haven't found it with the search strings I have used.
    I own 2 15" MacBook Pros - a 1.83 and a 2.16.
Both exhibit the same behaviour running OS X 10.4.6.
After waking from sleep, it takes about 30 seconds to reconnect to the network, whether ethernet or airport.
The 3 previous PowerBooks I owned did not have this problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this delay?
    Thanks

Its possible that the negotation process on the ethernet takes a little longer (it now has to detect 10/100/1000) prior to going through its DHCP detection. If you assign an IP address (statically) rather than going through DHCP negotiation, do you get on the network faster? If you don't have to move your machine around alot, you may want to try that. Otherwise, its worth the 30 second wait.
Some switching vendors actually take considerably longer than 30 seconds just to do the port negotiation (some Cisco switches for example).
I'm not sure what your issue is on your wifi network, but just like in the case of ethernet, it will need to attach to the network (associate with an access point) and then receive its IP address, setup its route table, etc.

  • Messages won't connect to AIM network after sleep.  What's up with this?

I am having some problems with Messages.  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday and I have found out that after my Mac Mini (Mid 2011 model) goes to sleep, Messages refuses to connect to the AIM network.  I used to have a similar problem with iChat, but I was usually able to get it to connect again by turning the WiFi on on my Mac.  (I use and Ethernet cable to connect to the wireless router.)  However, that does not work with Messages.  The only way I have found to be able to connect is to restart the computer.  Any ideas?

    Hi Malik666,
Actually I am set to Threaded view.
However a thread that gets a bit longer than this one will stop showing the individual posts in this staggered manner.
At the top of an Apple Support Communities page use the "Your Stuff" items > Then Preferences in it's menu.
This takes you to a two tabbed page.
    You need General Preferences.
It may pay to start another thread about the computer losing it's Communities Login.
I spend about 3 hours each evening here and only have to login once.

  • No Wifi Networks after Sleep

I'm running Mavrics for a while and all has been good. But lately after long sleep on my Macbook Pro (17" early 11) no wifi networks are available on the interface list. When I restart, they re-appear (most of the time).
I've tried creating a new network location, turned wifi on and off, even deleated the preferences in the library, but no luck.
I'm an engineer and this has got me stumped.
    Thanks in advance!

To see if you computer even needs this fix, I would suggest you click on Software Update...
It will show up in Software Update if your computer fits the specs for the update.
The Software Update version is only 1.3 MB
The other download directly from Apple is 25.81 MB
big difference even if a person has 3 to 5 computers the Software Update will take less time.

  • Airport forgets network after sleep

I've been on vacation for 3 weeks and ever since I'm back my MacBook keeps forgetting about my network with non-disclosed SSID-name after waking from sleep. Not everytime though but most of the time I have to enter all the settings again. What could be the problem. By the way; I don't have this problem on my iMac!
iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   and MacBook CoreDuo

Might try this... ignore the symptoms.HW, etc., it's worked in/on many others...

    Fairly certain it'll work.:-)
If not then you have more serious problems.

  • Not connecting to the same network after sleep

I'm working on a MacBook that is running Mac OS X (10.5.8) for a friend. It has all the specs that should be running circles around my MacBook running Mac OS X (10.6.2) which is five years old. However the hard drive had to be replaced on my computer and I updated the OS.
The MacBook (10.5.8) has an issue with connecting to the network here in the house. Last night we ran all the updates so that it would be current. Yet there was still a problem with the network connection. When the computer is awake and we log into the network it's fine, but when it goes to sleep and is woke up again it joins the network next door. Where my computer stays on the house network and doesn't jump networks. The pc computers in the house stay on the network here in the house as well and don't jump networks.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I was reading on the different discussion boards and none of them really match what is going on with this computer. There is also an airport client update, but I don't know how to find out if the Macbook is a late 2007, early 2008, late 2008 model and I fear that if I download this update client not knowing the model I will mess something up.
    Does anyone have any advice?

  • MacBook won't stay connected to preferred network after sleep

Anytime our MacBooks (good ole white) go to sleep, they wake up and need to be connected to the preferred network again.  I attempt to only connect with Preferred Networks, but that does not resolve the issue.  I only want it to see the preferred networks and it continues to sit around while I tell it where to link.
Any ideas?  I have a netgear router and 2 Macbooks that are having the issue.  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and continue to experience the same problem... lovely grayed out signal and a prompt to connect to some network.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

  • Airport stays on, but cannot see networks after sleep mode

i have had this issue for only one week (after 3 perfect years of wireless internet). the problem... the subject section says it all. so far, the only way i get to have internet again is to restart my ibook. works perfect until the next post-sleep mode.
does anybody know why this is happening?

    ibookG3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    ibookG3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    ibookG3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I found the solution for my G3 in other threads. Hope it works for you:
    1. From the Finder window
    2. Go to folders: /System/Library/Extensions/
    4. Scroll down until you can see:
    "AppleAirport2.kext"
    "AppleAirport.kext"
    5. Move "AppleAirport2.kext" file to the trash by clicking on it and then hitting command and back-space (you will then have to enter your system password)
NB: This leaves you with "AppleAirport.kext" - the more recent file in the Extensions folder)
    6. Restart
    7. Fixed!
