Automatically shutting down at 20% battery

I've recently experienced this twice. The first time I didn't really look much into it because I thought it was an isolated incident. But today, it happened again. I was in a lecture, and the lecture hall had no powerplugs, so I had to use the battery for an hour or so. So, the battery reaches 20%, and it just shuts down on me. Is there a major problem? Shouldn't the battery at least get to 1% or 2% before shutting itself down?
My MacBook has had problems before, changed the heatsink, and replaced a battery (didn't detect). I hope this isn't another problem because my warranty ran out last month.
Thanks.

Have you done the battery update? About Battery Update 1.2.
I had this happen to me but at 23%. Apple replaced my battery with no problem. If your MacBook is the original core duo which it sounds as it is then you are in luck. The battery for the original has had it's warranty extended an extra year. Even if you MacBook warranty is dead the batteries isn't. If the update doesn't work contact Apple at the number listed in the update.
One point is be firm but polite. I had no problems getting mine but others have had to argue some to get the battery replaced.

  • Z510 automatically shuts down at 99% battery, when running on battery

My Lenovo IdeaPad Z510 shuts down after 30-40 minutes when running on battery, without any notification. The battery level displays 99% battery.I've tried various troubleshooting steps, including gauge reset, charging for 10 hours when shut down, charging couple of times in BIOS mode. The energy manager says battery health is "normal". Battery report says :DESIGN CAPACITY43,200 mWhFULL CHARGE CAPACITY48,000 mWh My laptop is under warranty, but service center has refused to replace battery because report says it's healthy. Kindly provide some solution.

If the battery says its health is fine, it seems to me like its an issue with the motherboard. I'm not really sure how you'd go about checking that though especially since the service center won't let you send your laptop in. Might have to wait for someone else who knows more about it than me, sorry .

my ipad automatically shut down and now i lost al savings and in-app purchases the battery was on 50% what happened and can i get my purchases back

    Hi there,
This seems very frustrating. An iPad can shut down randomally for many reasons, just like a computer can crash. If it begins to happen regularly, then do contact Apple, but there are no signs that your iPad is malfunctioning from just one shut down like this.
But, you should be able to get all your in-app purchases back. In some apps, there is a 'restore purchases' button, which will download all the purchases you made for free.
In some cases, you can tap to make the purchase again, and it will be downloaded at no charge, however this does not happen with consumable items such as coins and credits.
I reccomend contacting iTunes Store Support at the link below, they will take a closer look at your purchases and give you further steps on redeeming them. They may also refund you if they have been lost.
    iTunes Store Support
You can also contact the developer of the app, and report the crash and missing purchases. If you tell me the app, I'll give you the relevent contact in the developers.
Other than that, sorry for the problems, and have a great day,
    Nathan

You probably need to restore your iPad now. Pay attention to the last part of this kb article where it explains about using recovery mode. You may need to restore the iPad using that method.

Hello urrein, Did you enter the BIOS and set the day, time, and year after you replaced the CMOS battery on the motherboard?

    Hi Reaskt
Have you tried using Temperture Monitor to monitor your temps? Maybe it is overheating. Also it sounds like your backup battery is dead, that's why the clock reset's it's self. If you still have applecare I would give apple a call a soon I could. To me it looks like you would need a new logic board. I realy hope that you have applecare. Also have you tried an Erase and Install? Have you tried running Disk Utility booted from your install CD?
Post back when you get more info

  • Compaq Presario CQ60, overheating and automatically shutting down.

    Hi.
I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 that is about a year old. These days I have been experiencing problems with my laptop. The problem is that the top hand corner gets hot, and then my laptop automatically shuts down itself. There is plenty of battery on my laptop, and it also happens, while my charger is plugged into it. This mainly happens when I am at school, where  I do not bring my notebook fan cooler. I can basically do nothing, because every 30 minutes it will automatically shut down itself. It even happens when I am in "Battery save" mode. This is starting to irrate me, because I have only had this laptop for about a year, and my warranty just expired so there isn't much I could do. I have read about this being a problem to a lot of people...
I am wondering if it has something to do with my battery, because it is really bad. It only lasts for about 30 minutes from 100% to 10%. I do not know what the problem is, because I have no expertise in laptops.
I hope  you can help me.

    HI;
The easiest thing to do is to spray canned air into the vents by the fan and heat sink. If a lot of dust comes out, that will probably take care of the issue. If no dust comes out, then you have other issues causing overheating and thermal shutdown. Take care not to overspin the fan blades when you blow the air into it.

  • IPhone automatically shuts down.

My iPhone is currently updated to 4.3.5 but i have this problem that when ever i use an app at battery percentage of below 80%, my iPhone will automatically shut down and display the no battery sign. But after about 5mins when i start my iphone again, it will be left with 50+% battery. This problem has already happened for almost 1 month but there seem to be nothing i could do to solve it, it is very annoying as i cannot do anything except to listen to music after my battery percentage drops below 80%. And that my iPhone charging time seems to be much slower, my mum takes the same time to charge her iPhone from 18% to 100% with me charging my iPhone from 75% to 100%, my battery percentage also decreases much faster than hers. Can anyone tell me what to do with my iPhone??

    Howdy asem18,
This article provides troubleshooting tips that can help you resolve the issue with your iPhone 4 restarting unexpectedly upon start up.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

If you still need help after trying the steps above, contact Apple Support.

  • GT683 DXR Shuts Down Early on Battery

Hey there. I've had my 683 for about 10 months, and everything has been golden so far, but in the last few weeks I've noticed an annoying problem. My battery life is about as good as it ever was, but the laptop is automatically shutting down well before the battery drops into critical mode. The shut downs aren't random, I've noticed they occur when the battery gets to around 25-30%. I went into the advanced power options for both normal mode and turbo battery mode to see if they'd gotten changed somehow, but from what I can see they're the same as ever. Low battery threshold is set at 10%, critical battery is set at 5%, whereupon the computer is set to hibernate. I just don't know why it's jumping the gun by so much.
    Any ideas?

My mobile phone is always automatically shut down at the time of the photo.

Plug the device into a wall outlet and leave it for about 20 minutes. If it has not powered on at that point try a reset by pressing and holding the home and power buttons for about 15 seconds until the white Apple logo appears.

About every 1 1/2 hours, it automatically shuts down to cool off.  Is there any way to manually turn it on?  Or, do they have to be replaced?

I tried that with no improvement.  I think I might have to have the fans replaced.  do you know if this is a particularly difficult procedure?  Something wierd that I've noticed is that if I have a video on for more than several minutes, the fans comes on, and also when I am on a Skype video conference for awhile.  Otherwise, the fan jst doen't come on as the intels heaten up to the point the the auto shut down kicks in...any advise?  This definitely interupts my work!  Thanks for your help and input thus far!

When I start iTunes on my home computer (Not a MAC), it automatically shuts down, and gives me the message that the Data Execution Prevention security feature has shut it down...what to do?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
