Automatically sleeping a MacBook Air prior to battery reaching zero..?

Hi, does anyone know if there is a way to automatically 'sleep' a MacBook Air before the battery runs out?
I'm usually pretty good at plugging it back into the mains before it 'dies' but twice recently I have missed the warning for a low battery and it has 'died'.
There must be a setting or an app out there that will 'sleep' the laptop when the battery gets to a specified battery percentage or time remaining.
Btw, I have a late 2010 13" MacBook Air running Snow Leopard.

Tried hibernatemode to 25 and still not helpful at all.
Battery drained 8% after 10 hours of sleep while mode 25 should put my macbook air into deep sleep and consume very minimal power.

  • Macbook air energy usage - battery runs down whilst sleeping

I have a July 2013 Macbook Air and the battery seems to be running down quickly (more so while it is sleeping, the usage when awake seems to go down at expected rate).
I have taken it to apple genius bar who said the battery was fine and did a fresh install of 10.9.2 (I then restored my time machine backup). They ran a diagnostic and said battery was fine.
There are no big active processes under activity monitor and power nap functionalies are disabled.
The battery runs down over the course of one day if asleep and just now it dropped by 10% in an hour while asleep (closing the lid or going to apple and then sleep makes no difference).
It did seem to start suspicously around the time I upgraded to Mavericks so I feel it's a software issue....
    Any ideas?!
    Thanks so much

I turned off any automatic updating, stopped Sophos Antivirus from on-demand scanning.
Regardless of turning off updating .....   a/v software on Mac can cause a litany of problems.
Uninstall the Sophos a/v software >  Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS
Then restart your Mac to see if it makes a difference.

  • Sleep Hibernation MacBook Air 11, 2014 Mavericks

I've just taken delivery of a MacBook Air 11 and one of the first things I have done is run this command:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    I then received this message:
Warning: Idle sleep timings for "Battery Power" may not behave as expected.
    - Display sleep should have a lower timeout than system sleep.
    - Disk sleep should be non-zero whenever system sleep is non-zero.
Warning: Idle sleep timings for "AC Power" may not behave as expected.
    - Display sleep should have a lower timeout than system sleep.
I then checked if it has stayed on "0" by running this command:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode = 0
I've carried out this task on many Macbook's in the past and never received this message.  To note, I am running the MacBook Air via its battery so far, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this message.  I have also unchecked "put hard disks to sleep when possible".  This is also something I do to all my macs.  Again, I've never seen this message before.
Is it a case of ignoring this message?

  • MacBook Air 2012 Severe Battery Drains While Sleeping

    Hi there,
This isn't any new but I've looked through all posts I could.
I got a refurbished MacBook Air 2012 in July. In the first 2 weeks it worked fine (or I was noticed).
Then I noticed the battery drains fast while the system sleeps.
I have done tests in the past weeks; almost 20% of battery drain after slept a day.
I have tried everything I could: turn off PowerNap, no wake from BT devices, erase and reinstall OS
    None of above helped.
I have tried to modify hibernatemode to 25 and it worked ok; 2% of battery dropped after 12 hours.
I took this to Apple in Taiwan and they told me they couldn't do anything about it because they think it's software conflicts which does't really have a solution but wait for OS updates. They did run a diagnostic and everything turns out to be fine.
I just did reinstall the OS again and I'll see whats going on tomorrow morning.
If still not getting better I will just use hibernatemode 25.
Anything recommandation is more than welcome.
    Thanks.
    My OS version is 10.8.3.

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.

  • MacBook Air mid-2011 battery problems

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air, and I recently replaced the battery.  Once the new battery was installed, the computer would operate from battery, but would not recognize the AC adapter and charge the battery.  If I disconnected the battery, then the computer would power from the AC adapter.  After searching this forum, I found that many, many users of practically all types of Mac laptops have similar problems.  It seems that Apple has had this problem in various forms going back at least seven years.  So, I found suggestions to reset the SMC, which I did.  The reset procedure for the MacBook Air is supposed to be the CTRL-Shift-Option + Power button, however this did not work for me.  Apple does not want users opening the case to their products, but I already had the case open to replace the battery, so I tried the alternate procedure of disconnecting the AC adapter and the battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds to reset the SMC.  This worked, and I could operate from battery, or plug in the AC adapter to charge the battery.
This was all yesterday at the office.  Then, I took the computer home, and it would no longer charge from the AC adapter.  It would, however charge from my Thunderbolt display.  Today, at the office, I have taken the computer apart again, and tried both SMC reset procedures again.  The only way I can get the computer to charge from the AC adapter is to disconnect the battery.  If I disconnect the battery, then plug in the AC adapter, then plug the battery back in, then the battery will charge.  However, if I disconnect the AC adapter, it will not charge the battery after I re-connect it.  I also have a Thunderbolt display in the office, and its power connecter will charge my computer every time.  I have coworkers with MacBook Airs as well, and my AC adapter will charge every other Mac that I plug into it.  My computer will not charge from any AC adapter unless I follow the procedure above.
So, to summarize, my computer will not charge from the AC adapter unless I disconnect the battery.  I can then connect to the AC adapter and reconnect the battery.  This is not a feasible long-term approach because I would like to keep the case closed.  My computer will charge from two different Thunderbolt displays.  I do not think that there is a problem with my AC adapter, because various other computers will charge from it just fine, and my computer will charge from it under certain circumstances.  I have searched the internet for any other SMC reset procedures and have found none.  I have noticed in my searching that this problem PLAGUES Mac computers of various types.  Does anybody have any other suggestions, or is there anybody on the forum that actually understands the low-level functions of the SMC and how to make this work?  I work on electronics for a living and have access to a lab with everything I would need to perform any kind of diagnostics or surgery on this computer.
Please do not suggest that I take the computer to an Apple Store or an Authorized Apple service shop.  It has been my experience that the people working there have only the most basic understanding of how to fix anything, and even if they do, the cost is such a significant amount that it would simply be more cost-effective to buy a new computer.  This computer is not under warranty, but it is just a little over two years old.  It would seem a shame to toss it out.

However, if I disconnect the AC adapter, it will not charge the battery after I re-connect it.
process elimination is extremely easy.   Forget the thunderbolt connection.
    1. you do not indicate having using another AC charger, regardless of your mention of it working "on 2 diff macs"
    2. its unfortunate you didnt borrow your co-workers charger on YOUR Air, or did you?......, because you did NOT mention same.
The 2 capacitors on the charging block board of the charger can easily blow (one usually).
Borrow another charger , a NEW one and verify.
If same, its your IO board.
There's only a 3-component path to diagnose on a battery
    1. charger
    2. IO board
    3. logic board
    (4. and the battery itself, but you already claim to have just replaced it).
Its not your logic board, however there is an incredibly slim chance of same, almost none however.
Im going to assume the "new" battery is a genuine Apple battery and not an Ebay "cheap" clunker?
this is what on hand diagnostics and a volt meter are for, which cannot be done online.

  • New Macbook Air with bad battery life

I've got a new Macbook Air (2013, 11-inch) and I upgraded the RAM and the processor. I'm only getting 6 hours max from the battery, which is disappointing because I wanted to be able to do a day's work without a charger. I've already sent one back and had it replaced, but the new one has the same problem. I've done a call with Apple Support, where they directed me to the help article I'd already read. I've checked Activity Monitor and killed everything I can. I've turned off Bluetooth as well. I use Chrome a lot, Tweetdeck is running, but neither of these things I'd expect to result in a 6 hour battery at 100%.
Does this sound like normal performance? If it's the processor speed, I'd be tempted to return this one and downgrade the processor as battery life is more important to me than speed (my work is mostly online anyway).

Quit Chrome and try Safari for a while. See whether there's an improvement.

  • Macbook Air 2014 13" Battery Question

Can continuously charging overcharge the battery of my Macbook Air and does it count as a cycle? I've heard that the Macbook Air has 1000 cycles. Currently I have done 10 cycles. So what's better?
    - Charging it to 100% and unplugging it until it goes down to 20-30%
    or
    - Leaving it plugged in all the time?
I searched everywhere but I wasn't able to get the answer I was searching for?

  • 2013 (13 in) Macbook Air's Inaccurate Battery Prediction?

I bought the new Macbook Air (13 in, i3, 8gb ram) about a month ago and have recently started noticing that my battery prediction has been way off. When I first got my Mac the prediction would be very accurate decreasing along with real time. Now the battery prediction jumps down in 10 minute intervals (ex 7:25 remaining, 7:05 remaining) within a couple of seconds and gives me an inaccurate numbers all the time (13:00 on 100% battery, 7:00 on 80% battery)
There was no loss in battery performance up until yesterday when I calibrated my macbook's battery. Now the battery drains faster than it used to. I am not running anything besides Safari and iTunes. This is my first Mac and I am a little worried by running into issues like this so early. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this? Anything similar to my issue?
    Thanks for your time!

Because we rarely use the computer in a consistent manner during the entire charge cycle, the remaining time will jump around a bit, as the software that calculates remaining time takes into account new input from your usage characteristics from the previous calculation interval.
The remaining time figure at the time you start using your system on battery power is probably the least accurate, since very little data has been yet collected on the usage. All there is to go on is the amount of power being consumed at startup, and by the settings in place at that moment (brightness, volume, network activity and disk usage).
Something you will have to get used to is the fact that your useage is very rarely matching the usage characteristics that Apple uses when creating the advertising statistic. They do publish some of the parameters, for which I do not know of any users who hold this in common.
Refer to Dominic's page link that outlines tips for increasing usage time. See if it helps before presuming a fault in the system.

  • Disable automatic sleep on macbook lid close

Is there ANY way to disable the macbook from going to sleep whenever I shut the lid? I'm very happy with my macbook overall, but the closing of the lid forcing it to sleep is making me not like that much more. Please help!!!

    Try this: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10564
It really not a good idea to run the MacBook with the lid closed though, because the air is drawn in through the keyboard to cool the unit. With the lid closed, you could potentially overheat the MacBook.

  • MacBook Air Mid-2013 Battery Draining FAST (about 5-6 hours at best)

I have been having problems with my Mac's battery draining very fast even on light usage. Simply using Safari will drain my battery in 5 to 6 hours, when my laptop would last the stated 12+ hours before when browsing the internet. I followed these steps yesterday...
    Reset com.apple.finder.plist, com.apple.sidebarlists.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist
    - Open a new finder window
    - Choose Go > Go to folder. Your destination is ~/Library/Preferences
    - Locate com.apple.finder.plist and rename it to com.apple.finder_backup.plist
    - Locate com.apple.sidebarlists.plist and rename it tocom.apple.sidebarlists_backup.plist
    - Do the same for com.apple.desktop.plist. Note: This file was missing in my folder. If so: nevermind.
    - Open Terminal and type: killall Dock
    Reset your SMC:
    - shut down your system
    - plug in the magsafe
    - hold down shift+ctrl+alt+power for a second, then release. Your magsafe should blink
    - do this three times
    Reset PRAM:
    - turn on your mbp and hold down alt+cmd+p+r immediately
    - hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound the second time
    - release the keys and let the MBP boot.
Give your system some time to adjust to the changes: after a while it should show you a much increased battery time.
...but to no avail, it didn't have any effect on my machine. I'm not sure what to do. :'( Activity monitor shows Safari as having a "10.7 average energy impact" (I don't know what that means in all honesty) and is the highest consumer on the list, with Dropbox being number two on the list saying the average is 1.9 at the moment. I quit background applications so I know that's not an issue — I don't know where to go from here. Also, my battery max/health is 6909 at 97% health, so I do know it's getting a near-full charge. I miss having 12+ hours of battery as that's what I bought this for. Should I go to the Genius Bar and see what they can do?

  • New MacBook Air 11 inch Battery Problems

I just got my new mac book air home and ran a full charge into the battery.  Once i disconnected it from the power adapter i noticed the battery was still only showing around 4 hours of life.  Nothing was running on the matchine at the time, other than a wifi connection.
As I started to use the machine (writing an email in a single browser window) the batter indicator began to jump in a seemingly iratic way.  After 30 mins of use, the batter indicator was showing less than 2 1/2 hours life remaining.
I've run the latest software updates and the same issue persists.  My machine is an 11 inch 1.6GHz model running the i5 processor.  I can see a few people have had issues in the past with eratic battery indicator behaviour but cant see any difinitive solution?

There is no definitive solution.  The time remaining indicator provides an estimate only based on the current load on your system.  When you first start using it, there will be more activity than normal as your system is set up and Spotlight indexes your files.
Think of your computer as being a car.  If you're going along a flat road, you can keep the gas at a steady level.  At that rate, maybe you can get 100 miles out of the gas you have remaining.  Now, if you suddenly go up a steep hill, you're going to have to use lots more fuel and all of a sudden, you may only get 50 miles out of the gas you have remaining.... but if you get to the top of that hill and then start coasting down, you might be able to get 200 miles out of the gas you have remaining.  How many miles you can get out of the gas you have remaining will always change if you measure it by what your car is doing "now".  However, if you look at the gas gauge instead, it will not fluctuate that way... it will always show you how much gas you have remaining.
To get the same accurate "gas gauge" reading, you should view your battery by the percentage remaining vs. the time remaining.   The percentage remaining is the "actual" percentage of your charge remaining.  The time remaining is only an estimate based on your current usage and it can fluctuate wildly depending on what your system is doing.
