Automatically Start Time Machine

Since upgrading to OS X Mavericks over a month ago, I have to open Time Machine Preferences and select my external HD/disk EVERY time that I reboot my iMac.  Otherwise, Time Machine will not start despite the TM slide being "On."  I was talking with an Apple Care representative about an Aperture 3.5 issue this morning and mentioned this.  (I originally thought that it was something new with Mavericks.  He said that it should not be doing this, but was not an expert in TM.)
Thank you in advance for any help!

  • Everytime I start time machine, my computer backs up +/- 250MB, then freezes.  Tried it with 3 different external drives, all stop at about the same point (they all work fine on other macs). Any suggestions?

The drives I have are Seagate 1TB GoFlex portable drives (one has UBS 3.0, the other USB 2.0), and a WesternDigital 1TB passport (USB 3.0).  I originally tried to backup with Time Machine using the Seagate USB 3.0, and when that didnt work, Seagate suggested maybe since my operating system is a little older, that I try with a USB 2.0, so they sent me another NEW external hard drive, with the USB 2.0.  Had the same issue.  Frustrated and convinced that Seagate just  sucked, I went and bought the 1TB WesternDigital passport (USB 3.0).  Have the exact same issue again.  Every drive was new, and formatted for mac.  When I started time machine it started to back up my files, but froze after copying give or take 250 MB (usually 252.5MB, to be exact).  I went and tried the drive on several other macs, and none of them presented any problems.  I also tried dragging individual files, but it still freezes on pretty much anything bigger than +/- 100MB.  Disk Utility says that all the drives are fine. Obviously this is a problem with my computer, and not the 3 brand new external drives.  I thought about upgrading to OSX 10.6, but don't know if this'll help or not (plus, I'd really prefer to have all the files backed up on a drive before doing that, just in case).  I dont know what else to do.. called apple, but I'm not about to pay them $50 to have them MAYBE give me a solution (done that twice now for previous unrelated issues, and each time they just told me to take it to a computer repair place.)  Just seeing if anyone out there has a solution before I cave and take it back to the certified computer guys for them to figure it out.. Also, I live in Montana and theres no apple store anywhere close (not suprising), so taking it to an Apple Store is just not an option.
Side note:  Seagate tech support is awesome; they tried everything to solve the problem, and they even bent their rules a little to send me a new drive, even though it wasn't a malfunction issue with their drive.  Really helpful, friendly people, which is much more than I can say for Apple at this point...

this is what you need to do to exclude everything apart from desktop.
on time machine preferences, click on Options
click plus sign, on the new window, click macintosh HD
do a Control + A then deselect users then click okay
go to options again, plus sign, go to users, control +A then deselect your user account
go to options again, plus sign, go to your user account, control + A, deselect desktop
    start the back up.

  • Just baked up my macbook pro to an external hard drive. my computer died on me and i plugged it in and rebooted it ,started time machine and finished backing up but. just wondering if thats good or should i delete and restart

just baked up my macbook pro to an external hard drive. my computer died on me and i plugged it in and rebooted it ,started time machine and finished backing up but. just wondering if thats good or should i delete and restart

    I wouldn't trust that backup.
Make sure the system is connected to AC and Do Over.

  • Getting (error code -6584) when starting time machine

Hello, I have an early 2011 mbp running Lion. I tried this morning to start time machine and got the error described above. I have access to my time capsule but the program will not start. This is the first time I start time machine since installing lion.
    What could be wrong?
    thanks in advance

To fix the error code -6584 you would need to verify and repair your Time Machine Backup.
Go to System Preferences > Time Machine.
Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click the Time Machine menulet and then selecting "Verify Backups".

  • "Do you still want to start Time Machine?"

I'm using Time Machine with Time Capsule connected to another wireless router via Ethernet, and my Mac is wirelessly hook up with the router.
My problem is that when I click on the Time Machine icon on Dock, "Do you still want to start Time Machine--Backup volume is now available" message appears after a couple of minutes! If I choose "Continue," I can enter Time Machine, no problem. But waiting for a few minutes for the message to pop up is kinda annoying for me. Once I click "Continue" button on the message, Time Machine launches almost simultaneously thereafter only for a while, though.
Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how to solve it?

For those who can kindly look at the messages on my Console log for this issue, I posted the Time Machine-related and Time Capsule-related messages below. Thanks in advance.

  • Why full, rather than incremental, when re-starting TIme Machine

I had to stop Time Machine a couple of weeks ago, and remove the dedicated external drive. Yesterday, on reconnecting the drive and re-starting Time Machine it appeared to try to make a full backup (which I had to abort after two and a half hours) rather than the incremental I assumed it would make. Does this mean that each time one turns Time Machine off, it will make a full back up the next time it is restarted and an external drive connected? This seems to make irrelevant the backups already on the drive.

I'm not completely sure but I think if you don't do a TM backup for ten days TM gives you a warning that you haven't backed up in 10 days and if you ignore it, it erases TM history. this makes it start a new series of backups once you reconnect.
I use my G5 rarely, sometimes not for weeks and I have never had a TM warning about a "stale" backup. When I turn it on, it simply schedules the next backup, which is incremental, as always, and proceeds about an hour later.
I have never seen that "Ten Day" warning.
I think I have also let my other MBP sit unused for over 10 days and have never seen the warning.
However, I always start up these machines with the TM drive connected. Running them with the drive disconnected may be a completely different situation. In oher words, when I start these two rarely used computers, there is really nothing new to backup. That may be the difference. If you use the computer for 10 days or more with the TM drive disconnected that may cause the warning flag to be raised.

  • Lion unresponsive after starting Time Machine

I accidentally deleted a file so I started Time Machine to restore it.  The machine seems to be hung.  There is no title bar and no dock.  I can see the application windows and I can move the mouse pointer but I can't click on it.  The machine has been in this state for over 90 minutes.  The screen saver didn't start but I can see dialogs that have popped up.  Unfortunately, I can't click on any of these dialogs.
How do I get out of this?  Do I have to pull the plug?  How do I prevent this from happening in the future?

I tapped the power button in anticipation of powering down the whole machine.  This closed Time Machine without powering the machine down.  I closed a bunch of applications and restarted Time Machine.  I restored the file successfully.  I wish I did this two hours ago.

  • Using Automator to start Time Machine backup then eject?

I've been fooling around with Automator because I want to create an application so when I mount my Time Machine disk and I run the application, the Time Machine backup with start and once it's finished it will automatically eject the volume.
I used the following shell script to begin the TM backup:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/backupd-helper &
I used the following Applescript to eject the volumes:
    tell application "Finder"
              eject (every disk)
    end tell
The problem is, when I save it as an application and I run it, I can see TM backup starts but it immediately ejects the disk. What can I add so it will eject the disk AFTER the TM backup has completed?
    I have a MBP (late 2011) with OS X 10.7.4

    Two comments:
    1) Try removing the ampersand ("&") from the end of that command.  The ampersand causes the command to continue in the background while the script continues to the next step.  You want the script to wait until that command is complete.
    2) You posted your question in a section for Apple's Time Capsule Wi-Fi router.  Presumably you want support for the Time Machine backup hardware.  Such a question should be posted in the section for the OS X version you're running.

  • HT3275 start time machine backup immediately

How to start a time machine backup immediately ?

Click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen
    Click Backup Now
Otherwise, backups will occur automatically each hour.

  • Unable to start Time Machine

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro 2x2,66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 7GB RAM  with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 Have 4 HDS, Mac OS in HD 1 and disk 2 for Time Machine.
After configure Time Machine and begin the countdown it does not start.
Selector ON OFF is ON and
    Oldest Backp: --
    Latest Backup: --
    Next backup: Automatic backup off
Trying to fix I throw the /Library/com.apple.timechine.plist file and the time machine files stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons/ and restart.
After this Time Machine does not work.
I think is like the service does not start.
    Help will be appreciated.
    Felix

Make sure that your external hard drive is set up properly for MacOS and TM to use. Most drives you buy online or at a store are set up for a MBR Partition Map Scheme. You can check your external drive by using Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Click on the new drive and check the info at the bottom of the window.
Use Disk Utility to repartition it and choose the Option for GUID Partition Map Scheme for Intel processor Macs. After the Partition Map Scheme is proper, you format the partition using HFS+ Journaled and name the drive something like "Time Machine".
When the drive is set up properly, go to the System Preferences/Time Machine/ and change the drive it's trying to use to your new drive.

  • Starting Time Machine - need to erase external HD first?

Hi - I have a LaCie 250GB HD which I have been using for years with Silverkeeper as a back up program. This worked fine until several months ago, when I upgraded to Leopard, not knowing that Silverkeeper is not currently compatible with Leopard ... Now I have learned that my current back-ups are possibly corrupted and I want to switch over to Time Machine ASAP!!
My LaCie's format is Mac OS Extended, which seems correct for TM. My question is, do I need to erase my LaCie HD before I begin or will Time Machine automatically overwrite what is there?
If I do need to erase it myself, is there a proper way to do this or should I just drag everything to the trash?
Any other tips that a beginner to TM might miss would be appreciated, although it looks straightforward enough.
    Thank you!
    FranArt

V.K. - thanks for this thorough reply, and clear instructions, which raise a few more questions.
As of now, when I select the whole drive in disk utility and press command+i it shows that I have 0 partitions on the LaCie. (Although if I go to the sub heading, 'LaCie Disk' there are 6 partitions there.)
I think I do need to erase the HD (which I agree is a good idea) because there is simply no room left on it. As of now, I have 'Partition Map Scheme: Apple Partition Map" & 0 partitions on the LaCie. I see that in order to select 'mac os extended journaled' format, I have to choose at least 1 partition. Why is that necessary? And why is the 'GUID partition scheme' better (&/or necessary)?
It I understand correctly, you are saying that by choosing 1 partition I would have a place only for Time Machine on the HD, and if I want to put something else besides TM backups on the drive in the future, I can later change the number of partitions to more than 1 - is that correct?
    Thanks again!
    Fran

  • Start time machine over?

I just upgraded my 2006 imac running leopard to a mbp 13" running mountain lion.  I migrated everything to the mbp from my time machine backup and everything transferred ok. There are now 2 problems. First one is when i plugged in the external hard drive to start backing up again, time machine said it was cleaning up old backup files, and now it shows the oldest backup as 2 april 2013.  (its not the end of the world because i am happy that i have everything on my new mbp)
Secondly, it now says the backup is too large.  Backup requires 82gb but only 72gb is available.  Are my options here either buy a new drive, or start fresh with current one by erasing and starting again?

How large is your TM backup drive?

  • Start Time Machine from Terminal?

Is there a way to start a Time Machine "Backup Now" via Terminal?

  • Any way to automate multiple Time Machine profiles?

I have 9 drives. 5 drives for data (1,2, 3, 4 & 5) and 4 drives to back them up (1/2B, 3B, 4B & 5B) using Time Machine. I have a lot of photos and video, drive 1 is a SSD boot, drive 2 is a SSD for work, the rest are hard disk drives.
I reset Time Machine manually for each profile every so often like so:
    Profile Task
    1 Backup Drives 1 and 2 to Drive 1/2B
    2 Backup Drive 3 to Drive 3B
    3 Backup Drive 4 to Drive 4B
    4 Backup Drive 5 to Drive 5B
I wish I could set it up so time machine knows the profiles and does the backup tasks one after another in a continuous loop. That would be great!
If there is no practical way for me to do- then this post is my wish list for next operating system!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Short of something like an Applescript or Automator that would swap various versions of the preferences file (/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist), which would be a serious problem if done while a backup was in process, no.
A better solution might be to use Time Machine for your boot volume, and perhaps another (1 and 2 in your example, apparently).
Then use another app, such as CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like, for the other backups. CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.
Feel free to post the suggestion here, though: http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html

  • Can't start Time Machine - Preferences stops responding

I've set up a Time Capsule.
It's connected by cable to my modem/router to extend the network, the setup went OK and it seems to be working fine but I can't carry out a backup.  It doesn't matter whether I'm connected wirelessly or via ethernet.
When I switch on Time machine I just get the rainbow spinning disk and Preferences not responding.  No matter how long I leave it.  In the end I always have to force quit Preferences.
In Finder the time capsule shows up under SHARED not DEVICES.
Have tried resetting etc but to no effect.  Am I missing something out here?

    Bob
Thanks for responding - see answers below.
What is the setting for Wireless Mode?
    Create a wireless network
What is the setting for Connection Sharing?
    Off (Bridge Mode)
The time capsule is working fine to "increase" my wireless network.  I know that the setting isn't "extend a wireless network".  I can turn off the wireless access on my Sky Netgear modem/router and my iMac connects to the internet through the Time Capsule which is connected to the Sky modem/router by cable.  I think this part of my set up is fine.
    I might be wrong.
What I can't do is get Time Machine to run a backup whether connected by ethernet or wirelessly. As soon as I slide the Time Machine switch across I get the spinning rainbow disk and then nothing happens.  No matter how long I wait the message through Activity Monitor or  Apple | Force Quit is System Preferences (not responding).
I can copy files and folders to the Data Folder on the Time Capsule so presumably the disk is not at fault.  Perhaps something is wrong with Time Machine and I need to reinstall or perhaps I haven't set it up correctly- I just don't know.
