Automatically turn off wifi when plugged into LAN?

What happens:
I go to a site and put my nice MacBook Pro down. I then plug into their wired network and then discover that I am accessing the wrong network. I look up and notice that the wifi is hooking into a nearby access point.
What I Expected:
When I plug in a wired LAN, it should turn off wifi.
Ciao!

is it THAT much of an inconvenience to just click on the wifi symbol in the menu bar and select "Turn Airport Off" ?
I performed extensive experiments and this can be accomplished in under 2 seconds, on average.
I didn't say it's a hardship, but it's something the computer should be able to do automatically. Following rules like that are something computers are good at. I'm not.
Taking the same argument, they could just have a drop down that lets you pick "better performance" or "better power savings" and you could click it your self when running off battery or not. But it makes much more sense to have the computer detect this situation and react accordingly.
Do you have a helpful suggestion?
Ciao!

  • After iOS6 upgrade iPhone 4s no longer automatically syncs by wifi when plugged in

My iPhone 4S has always synced via WiFi automatically when I plug it into the USP on my iMac to charge. After the upgrade to iOS6, when I plug the phone into the USB cable, it mounts on iPhoto and iTunes (I can see the device), and the photos sync to iPhoto. But the phone does *not* sync automatically by WiFi. I can choose it in iTunes and manually click sync and it will sync. But until the iOS6 upgrade, it would sync automatically when plugged in in my office with WiFi. This is annoying because I often forget to manually sync just assuming the phone is up-to-date because it has been charging in my office with WiFi (as it always did). Then I find myself on an airplane and none of the Podcasts or Music has synced (and no WiFi on the plane to get things from the cloud). This was never an issue until iOS6, and I haven't changed any settings other than a straight upgrade. Is there some new setting in iOS6 I need to change to go back to the old behavior of automatically syncing when plugged into USB to charge in my office with WiFi? Any help or suggestions would be truly appreciated.

Same here.  I have to manually kick off a sync, so have to go to my Mac.  If I forget, I don't have any new items.  I've also recently found that Podcasts no longer sync from iTunes, even once I start the sync manually.

  • WiFi turns off, too , when going into Airplane Mode

    Hi all,
not sure if this was the case before OS4 but I have noticed that when connected to Wifi and then switching to air-plane mode , Wifi will turn off as well but works again after turning it back on. (Air-plane mode will also stay turned on)
Is this a bug or normal behaviour?
    Thanks

That is how it has always been (well not always, original you couldn't have Wifi and Airplane at same time).
Process is always turn on Airplane, then you have to manually turn back on WiFi.

  • My iphone 5 won't turn on but when plugged into power source it keeps showing apple logo?

My iPhone 5 won't turn on at all and then when I plug it into a power source either into a plug socket or into my laptop with the USB cable it keeps showing start up screen with apple logo over and over again on a loop.
I have tried holding the top and front button together, this didn't work. I have also tried connecting to my laptop and following the reboot steps that I found on another discussion forum. Neither worked for me. The phone just won't reboot and it keeps continuing to loop the apple logo screen over and over without me touching anything.
The iPhone won't even connect to itunes and so itunes seems to not recognise my phone because its not even turning on (just continually apple logo screen appears for 5 seconds, goes to black screen and then repeats).
I don't know what is happening to it! Can anyone help? Is it a fault with the hardware or have I dont something to it? The next appointment at the genius bar for me is monday so I'm going to keep looking for any more recent ones until then but I really need to get it sorted before then so if anyone can help that would be great!
    Thanks

Try a reset when your iPhone is plugged into the charger as you say it does not respond when not plugged in...
Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
See if it will charge after this.

  • My iPod automatically turns off, even when it is FULLY charged!!! :(

Before I go to school, I let my iPod charge over night so then on my way to school && back I can listen to it.
It's FULLYcharged and after I listen to 2 or 3 songs it just turns off. Somtimes it says "low battery pleaese connect to computer". (Remember, it's still fully charged!)Even when I turn it back on it eventually does it again.
    What's wrong!

Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.

    How to extend battery life?

    Hi Micsher,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The information below may help you troubleshoot your iPhone battery life issue:
iPhone Battery and Power - Apple Support
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/battery-power/
    Battery & power
Is your iPhone battery draining too quickly or not holding a charge? Try restarting it first. You can also adjust several settings to extend the battery life of your iPhone.
    Restarting your iPhone
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button on top of your iPhone, then drag the slider to turn it off. Press the button again to restart.
The article below explains how to get the most out of the battery life of your iPhone.  I've included some of the highlights below ... click on the link for complete information.
    Apple - Batteries - iPhone
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
    Optimize Your Settings
Depending on how they are set, a few features may decrease your iPhone battery life. The tips below apply to an iPhone running iOS 7.0 or later.
Enable Wi-Fi: Having Wi-Fi enabled helps consume less power when doing activities that access data. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and log in to a Wi-Fi network.
Adjust brightness: Dim the screen or turn on Auto-Brightness to extend battery life. Turning on Auto-Brightness allows the screen to adjust based on lighting conditions.
Fetch new data less frequently: The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To fetch data manually: Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and tap Manually.
Turn off push notifications: Apps with Push Notification alert you of new data, which may impact battery life. To disable, go to Settings > Notifications, choose the app you want to disable, and do the following:
    Change Alert Style to None.
    Turn Badge App Icon off.
    Turn Sounds off.
Note: New data will be received when you open the app.
Minimize use of location services: Apps that actively use location services, such as Maps, may reduce battery life. You can see which applications have recently used location services by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
Use Airplane Mode in low- or no-coverage areas: Your iPhone always tries to maintain a connection with the cellular network, which may use more power in low- or no-coverage areas. Turn on Airplane Mode to increase battery life in these situations.
    Viewing Usage Statistics
Knowing and understanding your iPhone usage can help you better manage your battery life. To view your iPhone usage statistics, go to Settings > General > Usage. Under “Time since last full charge”:
Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. iPhone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.
Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • Please give us the option to turn off vibration when plugging phone into power!!!

Ok you're married, you're up later than your spouse, you creep into the bedroom, eventually you manage to put the little connector in to charge overnight.... then BRRRRR BRRRRR a "silent" vibration that is so loud it wakes up your spouse. So Apple what is the explanation for not allowing us to turn this off? I'm guessing you want that satisfying vibration safe in the knowledge the phone is getting power, except it's annoying as **** plus the screen turns on anyway and floods the room with light. Why do I need 2 methods of confirmation that the phone is getting power.

I would imagine, if your spouse is such a light sleeper, you've got your phone on mute or DND at night anyway. Change the setting back in the morning. Or, charge the phone in another room. Or buy your spouse earplugs.

  • ITouch has a black screen as if it's off but when plugged into the computer it says it's on. I have to wait until the battery dies to charge it and turn it back on.

I've tried restarting it. When the battery finally dies and I get to turn it back on, it works for a while until it freezes, then I click the power button to put it on standby and then the screen won't turn back on but the computer says it's still on. However, the computer won't detect the device.

When this happens hold the HOME and SLEEP button at the same time for about 10 seconds until an Apple logo appears. If that works we still need to find out why it is locking up.

  • X200 fan turns on permanently when plugged into ac adapter

    Hi all,
I don't know if anyone has seen this happen to their machine but whenever I use my x200 on the battery source, everything works fine and dandy. But when I have the ac adapter plugged in, the fan will turn and stay on the entire time. It gets super loud and annoying; and I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem  before? I even setup my battery setttings and ac settings to the exact configuration and the problem still exists. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hey mkaplan28,
It is possible that the 3rd party adapter may have caused some damage to the notebook itself - 3rd party adapters do not conform to HP's strict power requirements and can cause all sorts of problems.
Try running the HP Battery Check to see if there are any issues with the batteries themselves:

  • Ipod turns off computer when plugged in, itunes wont recognize it

  • My MacBook Pro isn't turning on, at first it would only turn on when being plugged in by its charger and continued to stay on 0% and now it won't even turn on even when plugged into charger. What's wrong with it?

    Please help

Is this an early 2008 MacBook Pro?
I observed two of these machines work perfectly for several months (different users and workflows) with no issues and with normal shutdown. The next press of the power button is greeted by about 3 - 5 seconds of DVD click, hard disk seek, and then nothing. Different batteries, chargers, and memory chips were used with no machine revival.
As these two machines were fully depreciated employer hardware, they were scrapped, rather than provided to Apple for hardware diagnostic and likely expensive repair.

  • My iPhone 4S won't stay turned off without being plugged into a charger . I reset it and nothing .. Help

    Please help !!

Clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If still problem and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take to Apple. If no coverage, clean again with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. If still problem, next step would be to replace the iPhone charging port with attached flex cable. Apple would handle this with Replacement iPhone 4S for $199.

  • IPhone only turns on when plugged into wall

Hello, I have an iPhone 4 CDMA and it only works when in is plugged into the wall.  It does not work properly anyother time.  When I plug it into the computer it goes through the Boot Loop.  When I put it into DFU mode and recovery mode and try to restore it in iTunes it doesn't restore and just gives me a bunch of different error codes.  The most common error codes are 2001, 2006, or 1604.  It use to give me Error 21 but I fixed that by editing the hosts files.  I have tried six different computers and seven different iPhone cables on the computers and I still get the same error codes every time.  It does not work if it is not plugged in.  I have replaced the dock connector/charging port and the battery.  I bought it used and think it may have been jailbroken at on time.  It has not been jailbroken in the time I have had it.  I have also tried Tinyumbrella and that did not work.  What could be wrong with it?

Hello! When it turns off, do you notice if it drains quickly or does it just shut off even with full battery? Because this can also be caused by battery problems. Your iPhone may not be turning on even when plugged into a computer because a wall outlet charger gives off more power than a computer does.
I suggest you bring your phone to an Apple store right away. They could at least help you determine the problem, and by then, you can decide what to do with your iPhone - you can have it repaired (if they say it's still fixable), you can have it replaced with a refurbished iPhone, or you can buy a new phone completely.
