Automatically update album artwork?

Can someone help me please? I am not to sur where to go to find it or anything but I remember a few months back someone mentioned that there was a system/program/app whatever that would automatically update your album artwork in iTunes. I am not sure if it was the latest keynote address for Lion and all that. But can someone please help me if it is even available or how to access it.
Thanks heaps

Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
*How to use multiple iPods with one computer*
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
etc.
I currently manage our family's five iPods using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their iPod. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • How do I update Album artwork onto my ipod.....

How do I update Album artwork onto my ipod after i have found the artwork and added it to my itunes?
i tried to just plug in my ipod and sync. it but that didnt work.

*Why is artwork not showing on my iPod when it's there in iTunes?*
iTunes will display a cover in many of it's views provided at least one track from the album has embedded artwork. The iPod appears to load only the artwork from track one to create the cover flow and album views which means that it can sometimes fail to display art for albums even when you can see the art in iTunes. Further, when tracks are played on the iPod, artwork is displayed if and only if it exists in the currently playing track, so track one may show art while track two does not.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them you can try http://www.stum.de/itunes-find-tracks-without-artwork/ for Windows or http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=trackswithoutartwork for Macs. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus. If you have artwork for some tracks of an album, but not others, find the album in the main music folder, select a track with artwork, right-click (Option-Click for Macs) on the art & click copy, then select all the tracks of the album, use CTRL-I or Command-I to *Get Info* and then paste the image into the artwork box.
I say 320x320 because I believe (from using TouchCopy) that it's the size used in the iPod cache so if you're going to crop or resize you might as well work to that size. Otherwise 200x200 is probably good enough.
    *Rebuild artwork cache*
Sometimes the artwork cache becomes corrupt and fails to show correct artwork, even when this is properly set up in iTunes. To rebuild the artwork cache, connect your iPod to iTunes. Locate the iPod in the Sources pane on the left-hand side, then select the Music tab. Remove the tick from *Display album artwork on your iPod*, sync the iPod, reselect the option & sync again.

  • Update album artwork with high-res?

Anyone know of a program or easy way to update album artwork with higher-resolution versions? I know iTunes has an option to do so, but find it misses a lot of my music (stuff entered slightly different than itunes has it in the store) or gets the completely wrong artwork. I'd also like a way to overwrite existing artwork (example: if I have a low-res artwork). Anyone know of an application or easy way to do this without search for art one album at a time?

Oh Diane, I am so sorry.....I was sooooo excited to receive a response that I didn't even check to see who it was from, just wanted to go ahead and solve my problem..........which you have done for me. In which case, you too are a genius. thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • How Long Does it Normally Take to Update Album Artwork in the iTunes Store?

My apologies in advance, I know this has probably been asked before, but I'm having trouble finding it.
This is my first attempt at setting up a podcast in the iTunes Store. I think I have everything set up correctly, but I made a mistake on the album artwork - I created a PNG file with transparency, which appears as black. I have replaced the PNG file with a JPEG file with a different name (as suggested by the Apple instructions), and updated the RSS XML file to reflect that new file name. I also had a typo in the description, which I was using the <description> tag for. I corrected the typo in the <description> tag, and also added an <itunes:summary> tag with the same info.
I've waited for a few hours with no updates appearing. Is there a way to force the update, or do I just need to wait? I've verified that the raw RSS feed is updated correctly from the site.

Thanks for the quick reply, Roger!
I can wait. Managing expectations is the main thing. And learning not to make the same mistake again!
Hope you have a happy holiday season.

  • Automatically Add Album Artwork when adding new music

Does anyone know how you can have iTunes automatically discover the album artwork, if you already have it?
I am backing up CDs and music which I already have converted to some digital format, and trying to compile all my music together from my wife and myself in a central location.
Many of the artist music folders already have an artwork image there associated with it.
So when adding a folder, is there a way to have iTunes automatically "see" that album cover? Would it be a convention for naming the file? Or a file size/picture size thing? Or place it in a specific location when importing?
Yes, I do know you can manually do it, which is fine for an album or two. But our collective media libraries are a mess, and there are hundreds of albums to import.
Also, I know you can use iTunes to "Search for missing album art work" but I also know that process is flawed, does not always turn up the correct art, and also does not code the artwork along with the track, so if you move music later on, the whole process starts over again.
I would imagine there has to be a way to kick iTunes to recognize the associated artwork automatically upon import. Any suggestions?
    (ps - i use Windows XP Pro, iPhone 3G 16GB, iTunes 9.0.3.15)

If it's not in the library, iTunes won't play it...
If you're adding music to iTunes, use the Add to Library function. That's what it's there for. iTunes will be happy that way and if you have smart playlists set up, they will be filled with the new additions.

  • When I auto-update, album artwork goes bye-bye

I have album artwork for all of my songs on my iTunes. If I upload the songs manually to my iPod, all the artwork shows up. Then if I add a song or two to the iTunes library and then choose auto update to update the iPod to match my music library, all the album artwork disappears. Does anyone know what is going on here??

    Lee,
You need to have your computer connected to the Internet in order for it to find the track info for a CD - it accesses the online GraceNote database to match song profiles. Only if your music isn't already there (which is very unlikely) will it not come up with something.
For the album artwork, it is not contained on the CD itself. You need to search for it. Most people find it on Amazon.com. Click until you get to the big (~300x300) image, save it and edit it on your PC, then drag and drop it into the box in iTunes where it says "drop album artwork here".

  • ITS not updating album artwork

I have tried multiple ways listed on multiple posts.  Let me spell out as much detail as I can here.
    iTS Podcast URL: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hardstyle-team/id334802520
My podcast's album artwork has gone awry since they standard change to 1400x1400px for the artwork.  I had made the recommended changes such as crearting a new file and referencing it, not overwriting my current file, but no luck.  I have been reverted to the default artwork ever since.
After a month or so I had thought it may be the Wordpress plug-in I was using.  BluBrry.  Because now my feeds weren't updating.  I tinkered around and re-installed BluBrry and Wordpress running all default recommended settings.  My feed had finally updated, but not the album artwork.  And for some reason my feed was only showing 9 episodes?
So I decided perhaps I'll dump everything on another domain and use Podcast Maker since it had a free 30 day trial.
I set 301's to my old feeds and included the iTunesNewUrl line.
    http://hardstyleteam.us/feed/podcast/  is now  http://podcast.hrdstyl.com
Feed displays as valid but there has been no change in my ITS listing.
This is frustrating when I am regularly ranking in the top 50 in the Netherlands Music Podcasts, but displaying a generic placeholder graphic with no episodes being updated.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank You!

iTunes is indeed using the feed at http://podcast.hrdstyl.com/ at least for subscribers. The episodes up to 36 show in the Store: episode 37 shows when subscribing but as it was only uploaded today it won't appear in the Store for a day or two.
You have an image correctly referenced in the feed: it should appear in the Store eventually but it can take a week or two for images to appear.
You have a 301 redirect in place:  I don't know what the result will be if you remove it. Obviously the itunes:new-feed-url only works if the Store can read the old feed - that will move it permanently. However Apple do advise using both, and leaving both in place for two weeks, so presumably it will be OK.

  • I tunes store is not available in my country, can't update Albums artworks

Itunes Store is not available in Ecuador and i couldn't find a way to update the Albums Artwork feauture that comes with the last itunes version.
Its a terrible mistake from Apple. Please Help!

As stated above you can still add your artwork manually:
iPod & iTunes for Dummies - Adding Album Cover Art or Images in iTunes
Add Song Information, Lyrics, and Artwork to My Tunes
iTunes: How to Add Artwork to Songs
If you have an iPod make sure it is enabled to show the artwork.
A tip for finding suitable artwork is to go to Amazon, locate the album, save the picture to your desktop and drag it to the iTunes artwork pane. Another way would be to locate artwork using Google image search and put the artist or album name and save the picture you find there in the same way. There are also some programs like this one: iTunes Art Importer or MP3 Tag

  • Album Artwork Not Updating??  Even After Deleting All New Artwork

I have recently added new album artwork to my songs in my playlists directly through my iPod 5th generation. I thought the artwork was going to get updated automatically so after that I disconnected the iPod and tried to listen to the songs on it. But the songs either had no album artwork or the previous artwork that I "deleted".
So then I connected my iPod to my PC again and there it was--all my new album artwork was already included with the songs, even though I couldn't see them whenever I used my iPod seperately.
So then I right-clicked on "Tony's iPod" and clicked on options. I then went under the "Music" tab and unchecked "Dispaly album artwork on your iPod". Then I clicked okay which meant obvisouly meant I won't be able to see the artwork whenever I used to iPod seperately. So then I went in options again and checked "Display album artwork on your iPod". I expected the iPod to automatically update the artwork.
I then clicked "ok" and on the top part of iTunes it said "Updating Ipod. Do not Disconnect" Then it said "Optiomizing artwork for Tony's iPod" but then all of the sudden a small window appeared with a big red X saying
"The ipod "Tony's iPod cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (-50)."
I freaked out again and restarted my computer...disconnected the iPod--connected it again, "disabled" the artwork and enabled it again...nothing worked--it kept showing the same error message. So then I decieded to delete all the new album artwork that were already with the songs (But the iPod did not want to accept them). After deleting all the new artwork--I attempted to "enable" album artwork. I believed maybe one of the album artworks i uploaded had an error on it or was not compatiable. So I "enabled" the artwork again and it showed the same exact error message.
I have no idea on what to do, can anybody help me?
P.S. I already checked for any viruses--there were none.

It might be possible that the artwork is just unavalible. Try finding a random picture and setting it as a songs artwork, then updateing your ipod with that picture set as the artwork and see if it appears. If it does, then maybe you need to redo all the artwork (i have had to redo all my artwork before...total pain in the ***..). If it doesnt show, then you got me...

  • Not finding album artwork....?

Anyone else seeing this?? Just imported death magnetic from the CD and itunes isn't finding the cover art...

I have tons of CDs that with WMP it has the artwork and when I load up itunes, nothing. go figure ... Im trying to find a way to make wmp and itunes place nice with the auto updating of the song info but between the two they love to fight and screw things up
*NOTE: You must convert WAV files to another format before you can add artwork.*
    *From iTunes Help ...*
Music and video you buy from the iTunes Store comes with its own artwork. You can add your own artwork to songs and other items in your library. You can add many popular types of still-image files, including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and Photoshop.
In list view (the leftmost View button), to display artwork for the currently selected item, choose View > Show Artwork or click this button (in the bottom left of the iTunes window):
Here are ways to add artwork to music and video:
◼ To add artwork to one item, select an item in your iTunes library and drag the art file file to the artwork viewer.
◼ To add artwork to multiple items, select an item, choose File > Get Info, and click Artwork. To add art to the selected item, click Add (or drag the art file from your desktop to the artwork box). Click Next to add artwork to the next item.
◼ To add the same artwork to multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click each item, choose File > Get Info, click Artwork, and drag the art file to the artwork box.
◼ To add more than one piece of art to a song, drag more than one image to the same artwork box.
◼ To retrieve album artwork for songs in your library, select the songs and choose Advanced > Get Album Artwork.
◼ To have iTunes automatically download album artwork when you import a CD or add songs with missing artwork, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Store, and select “Automatically download missing album artwork.”

  • ITunes keeps resetting and asking me if I want to download album artwork!

Hi, it seems as though every time I open iTunes these days the stupid window pops up asking if I want it to automatically download album artwork. I click "No, blah blah blah." And then iTunes opens. At the left is the "Download" option thing (in green under the "Store" section), when I click it, a window pops up saying "Would you like iTunes to check if you have any unfinished downloads?" or something like that. I say, again (and of course) "No."
The "Download" button subsequently goes away and that is all that happens. But it happens repeatedly, every time I open the program! Obviously these settings are not saving--and it seems to be even more of a fundamental problem than that, perhaps some file is corrupted somewhere.
    Any thoughts?

Same here. And it doesn't seem to matter which way
you answer the question, it just keeps asking.
HOWEVER -- I had not seen this post before I restored 6:

If anyone could report if this solves the "won't remember the download art" setting, please let us know.

  • ITunes 7- Can't add album artwork

Lotta dsicussion about this topic, but I haven't seen my particular problem come up. When I try to manually add album artwork nothing happens. I've seen other people say they couldn't get it to work when they just dragged the artwork, but I can't get it to work when I crt+click and get info either. When I get info and paste the artwork into the box, the image shows up, but when I click okay, nothin happens. I make sure the checkbox beside the artwork is checked before I hit Okay.
Apple's automatic get album artwork worked pretty well, but only found about 80% of my albums. Pretty good considering the weird crap I listen to, but I'm pretty anal, and if 80% is gonna have artwork I want the rest to also.
Would the problem be that my library is on an external HD?
Is the problem that my computer (G3 ibook, 640MB SDRAM, OSX 10.4.7) is getting on in years? I can't think of any other ways to tell it to get the artwork, any help would be much appreciated!!

For files that won't let you change their artwork, there are two primary things you can check.
Firstly, make sure that the file is writable. If it is on a volume where permissions are managed, make sure you can write to both the file and the folder it is contained in. Select the file in iTunes, command-R, then use Get Info in the Finder to set the file/folder write access if necessary.
Next make sure the Creator and Type of the file isn't set to an iTunes unfriendly type. I know this was an issue in previous versions of iTunes. For example, for an mp3 file Creator=hook Type=MPG3. I know this sounds like stupid advice, setting resource fork information when Apple is telling us to stay away from using resource forks in OS X. iTunes apparently hasn't heard the news.
Perhaps adding album artwork to a file on an external volume is acting like the funny behavior of adding artwork to files on iPods. You apparently can't do it directly, but instead have to stage the artwork adding action on the volume which contains your iTunes Music folder, place the files in a temporary LIBRARY based playlist in iTunes, then drag copy the files from this playlist into the target iPod DEVICES playlist.
It is no longer clear to me what actions constitute an embed artwork action (place associated artwork inside the ID3 tag area of the file itself) versus an attach artwork action (place associated artwork in a separate artwork folder). This is extremely confusing stuff for an application that begins with a lower case i.

  • Can't add Album artwork to certain files.

Hi, I've come across an anomaly in iTunes. There are certain audio files that cannot, for any reason update album artwork. I update album art work but selecting the file in iTunes then "get info" -> "add album artwork". But on certain files these tabs, as well as lyrics, are greyed out. The audio files are ACC 128bits. The only thing I found in common with the files that won't get album art work or lyrics is that they were encoded with iTunes 4.7. The only fix I can see is reconverting them in another version of iTunes, but this seems like a really dumb fix. Mostly I'm just wondering if there are any other people that have this problem and what fix you came up with, or what would cause a specific version of iTunes to not allow artwork.

Instead of opening the album under "Get Info" and going into the Artwork tab, try clicking on the square box with a triangle in it located on the bottom left side of the iTunes window. This will display the ablum artwork inside the side bar. Click on the top of the album artwork box where it says "Now Playing" and it will change into "Selected Item". Select a song you're trying to get the album artwork for and see what it says in the box. If it says "Album Artwork Not Modifiable" then you might have a problem with the kind of file the music is. Granted, this shouldn't be any different than going into "Get Info" and trying it there, but at least this way you can tell for sure what the issue is. If the box says "Drag Album Artwork Here" then go ahead and drag the picture there and it should work. Sometimes checking the album artwork box helps you more understand what the issue is. Hope this helps!
