Automatically updated cross-references usable in printed documentation?

I am new to RH and will have to convert large documents
created in Word to HTML + PDF. I have already given up on RH for
Word (RH Word v7 + Word 2007 crashes very often on Vista and is far
too slow) and will use RH HTML, and I am prepared to do extensive
manual editing, and to change the visual appearance of documents if
necessary. The help system is going to be updated frequently, and
references to other parts of the document should update
automatically when the contents are edited.
My main problem at this stage is how to create and maintain
the internal references to other parts of the same document, which
is done in Word with auto-numbered chapters, sections and figures.
Online HTML is not a problem, and Word references can be changed to
HTML links. Presumably this could work also in online PDF. The
problem is printed PDF, where hyperlinks obviously do not work.
The Word documents use references like (see
section 2.5) and (
Figure 4.2), which are hyperlinks in the online version and
can be followed manually in the printed version. How do I do this
progressive numbering in RH HTML so that it updates automatically
when chapters, sections and figures are inserted, deleted or
shuffled? If this is not possible at all (as I suspect) how do I do
something usable in the PDF output, e.g. converting hyperlinks to
something like (see page 213), with the page number updated
automatically to correspond to the actual position of the target in
the PDF document?

Sorry, posted this by mistake in RH for Word forum. Moderator
can delete this thread if desired.

  • Creating and updating cross-references in a book

    Hello everybody,
I created a book of several files. Now I would like to create and update cross-references from one chapter to another. What do I have to do? (I use Framemaker 8).
    Thank you for your help.
    Bye
    Vreni

For creating cross-references between chapters, open the chapter documents and insert cross-references as is done for any normal document using menu command "Special->Cross-Reference".
For updating all cross-references throughout the book, you can use the menu command "Edit->Update Book".

Thanks John for the suggestion.  I was finally able to dwonload the newest drivers today when I signed on.  Seems like if you let one day go by Software Update will look at your version of the driver and will finally let you download the newest.  That did not help.  Nothing but communication errors.  It would not even let me load the the new driver as it would no longer ever see the printer.
Yesterday, for further explanation, I was working at the computer when I heard the printer chime a few times.  When I looked over the green light, which normally signals it is receiving a file to print, was flashing away.  I was doing nothing and I finally had to turn it off.  I spoke with another techie friend who is a big Mac user and has the same printer and he suggested it may be the USB circuit.  This printer has been on for 5 years with a few days off.  We have concluded the circuits are past their useful life and I will soon send the printer to be recycled somewhere.  A new printer is on the way as I need this device.
Again, thank you for your suggestion and I will mark this solved due to mechanical failure.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Automatic update on references

    Hi,
I have a reference on a cluster. This reference is use to restore parameters in a files. I use it with a property node. When I do modification in the cluster (that is strict type def) the reference doen't update, so my application doesn't compile. What can I do to make the reference update with the cluster?
    Thank you.

Are you using the reference in a subVI? If so, click on its terminal and check "Include Data Type". The property node should now say (Strict).

  • Hack for page number cross-references?

Anyone have hack for dealing with the lack of page number
    cross-references in the printed documentation?

Sorry for the slow reply, I needed to check with someone
about a macro they had but it is not one that will do what you
    want.
Is page numbering a requirement or do you would you be happy
with working links? If working links would be sufficient, there is
a macro on my site under Print Issues but it relies on the string
for the link being exactly the same as the string for the target.

  • Cross Reference Range?

Need to get a cross-reference to range some pages, say page 16-19
At the moment I'm creating two text anchors, one for each page, 16 and 19, then inserting the page references as two entities.
    Is there a better way?

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
Ok - doing the cross-reference range works that way
The Paragraph Numbers are done with "<paraNum />"
And I use that for the cross-reference - but sometimes it pulls the entire paragraph in instead of the Para num?
Capturing a paragraph in a cross-reference when its format is not defined with the <fullPara/> or <paraText/> building blocks, AFAIK is not a known bug.
To be sure the cross-reference format's building blocks are correct, build the format's expression by clicking the plus sign button in the Cross-Reference Formats dialog box, rather than by typing it or copying it from other defined formats.
To cross-reference a range of pages, insert a page-number format cross-reference at the beginning and end of the range. When content is added to or removed from between the cross-reference source markers, page number references adjust if needed. Take care not to delete the cross-reference markers when deleting text; it's helpful to work with hidden characters displayed. Moving a page that contains a cross-reference marker, as you'd expect, changes the page number reference.
InDesign cross-references don't update automatically; you need to click the Update cross-reference button in the cross-references panel, or click the option in the cross-references panel flyout menu,  to fix the yellow warning symbols.

  • Cross-references slow ID5 down

    I'm using ID5 (7.0.2) on Win XP.
I'm editing a 10 document book and as soon as I started cross-references the editing became unbearably slow - every character takes a second to update and hard drive is constantly in use.
Performance is set to fast, live update disabled, hyphenation is off, etc. etc., but no luck.
As a test, I copied one of the documents and deleted cross-references - the speed returned to normal even at high quality display and live redraw.
Any ideas how to resolve the issue? Any chance of switching updating cross-references off? Any good advise is appreciated.
An update: it seems that only cross-references that point to the external files cause the delay - I've got the impression that ID5 tries to open, update and close all the referenced files after every key stroke!
As an addition test, I opened all referenced files at once and - voila! - almost no delay (only due to the immense usage of memory by the opened documents).
I still would appreciate if anyone knows how to switch off dynamic cross-reference update.

[EDIT] I saw your update. It's pretty clear that the trade-off is using memory to keep files open and gain speed, or saving memory and working slowly. Perhaps a compromise would be to open only those files referred to from the file you're editing? [/EDIT]
Have you seen any improvement when you close the book and unused files, and edit one file at a time? I believe the changed x-refs should update when you reopen them and the book.
If you are a very patient person, you can file a feature change request at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform, and someday, perhaps, InDesign will offer the option to switch live x-ref updates off.
If you're in a production-deadline situation, you may want to look at the commercial InDesign Cross-References Pro plug-in from dtptools.com. It can convert your existing InDesign x-refs to its own, quickly, and it has the option to turn live x-ref updates on/off.h

  • Broken bookmark cross references in Printed Documentation

    Hi,
I'am using RH 10 to generate a printed documentation output. What i notice is that the book marked cross references are broken in the Printed Documentation output. Other cross references are linking fine, but, the bookmarked cross references do not link to their destination.
I generated a chm file for the project and the bookmarked cross references appear fine there. Is there anything that could be tried to rectify this problem.
Please note that i'am using HTML files as the source files to convert to a Word output.
    Thanks,
    Rupesh

There's no easy way to do this. RH doesn't include any
sequence that will convert to a cross-reference in Word, and
inserting multiple cross-references in Word isn't as easy as
executing a find-and-replace command. The best workaround I've
    found so far is this:
    1. In your RH doc, include a reference that is easily
distinguished from other text. For example, "For information on
    Project Beta, see page BETA."
    2. Generate the Word document.
    3. Find the first instance of "BETA."
    4. Insert a cross-reference to the page number of the Beta
    heading.
    5. Toggle the field code.
    6. Copy the field.
    7. Find the next instance of your special text ("BETA" in
    this example).
    8. Paste the field reference.
    9. Repeat this process until you're finished.
Unfortunately, the field code references change each time you
generate the document. Equally unfortunately, Word won't recognize
regular braces and text as a field code reference - you have to use
the Ctrl+F9 sequence to generate them manually. So you can't just
generate the document, insert the first cross-reference, and then
replace "BETA" with {PAGEREF _Ref### \h} across your entire
document - it won't work. Instead, you must visit each reference
and paste the field code sequence manually.
If someone else can improve on this process, I'm sure a lot
of people would be happy. If not, it's the easiest workaround I've
seen here, so you might find it useful.

  • Automatic update of cross references possible?

I work on a very long document using InDesign CS3 and InCopy CS3 and want to include cross references to other pages and chapters between the text. For example "Text...(See also chapter 3.4.1 on page 54)." I have the problem now that if I paste chapters or pages, some of the references are not valid any more. Is their a way to update those cross references automatically?! Is there a function available for that?! If somebody could help me with that, it would be great, really. Thanks a lot!

    Sebastian,
    1. Create a template (for each translated language) that has the desired entries on the Reference page(s). Make certain that the Reference Graphic Frames still have the exact same names as used in the origianl FM document. Then at the book level, select all the files in the book (that require these Reference pages) and File > Import > Formats, select Reference pages only, indicate the appropriate template file (it has to be open) and let FM do all of the work. Should take only a few seconds.
    2. Again, in the language specific template, update the Cross-Reference format and import the "Cross-Reference Formats" from the template into the appropriate files in the book.
You can do both at the same time.

  • Cross-references in printed doc

I am thinking about converting a FrameMaker book to RoboHelp,
where I can generate it as CHM or PDF. But I don't want to lose the
page numbers in cross references. RoboHelp seems to convert them to
hyperlinks, which are included in the resulting printed
documentation (DOC). But I would really like to include page number
references as well in the final PDF. Has anyone found a way to do
    this?

  • Why is a single Cross Reference text turning red after doing an Update?

After updating a large book in FrameMaker10,  the same cross-reference made in  a couple of chapters is turning to red text.   It is  set as  Heading 2.  I tried to deleted the heading and re-typing it.  I tried to change the style to Body and back to Heading 2 but all references to it are turning to red text after I update the book.  Any idea what is wrong and how do I fix it? I am using unstructured version.  See image.

Apply a Character Format of Default ¶ Font. Then re-apply the desired Paragraph Format. If the red goes away, it was either a Character Format that had been applied or a local color override. If the red is still there ...
Look at the Special > Cross-Reference > Format > Definition itself. Look for any <character-format-name> and see if any of those have a red Color defined in their Format > Character > Designer. If so, remove that building block from the definition [Change] [Done] [Replace].

  • Cross-Reference update

It would be great to have a better interface for Cross-References.
    1. Don't reset the source everytime Insert is pressed.
This is seriously annoying if you want to insert a bunch of references over and over. You have to reselect the Document and scroll down the list of paragraphs.
    2. Improve the Go to Source view.
If the Cross-Reference is similar to other sources it is dificult to know which one you are selecting. Imagine a table with numbers in it and several cells have the same value. You can't easily figure out what you are referencing. Maybe a preview window would be better?

No you cannot update customer material info record via MASS.  It can either be uploaded via LSMW or BDC.

When Mozilla Firefox last automatically updated, it suggested that Adobe Reader needed updating. After updating to Adobe Reader 8, I can no longer print from the internet, only to a file. I know the printer and its interface must be OK because Word prints normally.

Problem solved, it was my oversight, I had not removed the check from the Print to File box in the print set up.
