Automaticly set up internet connection? [SOLVED]

Every time I boot I have to run dhcpcd as root do get going with my connection. Of course I could just add it to the root profile/bash script but then I still need to log in as root first. There must be (and I know there is) a better way.
/Richard

In your /etc/rc.conf check your NETWORKING section for eth0 (or whatever interface name you are dealing with) and, if it doesn't already, make it look like this:
eth0="dhcp"
That should do it for you.

  • How can I stop Firefox from re-setting its internet connection configuration every time I re-open the browser? It should stay at "no proxy" but doesn't.

In the past couple of days, every time I close Firefox 8.0, it re-sets the internet configuration to "manual configuration" -- which generates a "proxy server refusing connections" error message. I have to re-set to "no proxy" every time I re-open the browser. This never happened before yesterday. What can I do to make the "no proxy" setting an automatic default on opening? ISP is Verizon high-speed.

  • How to set up internet connection between MacBook Pro and an old eMac?

I got an old eMac without wifi and a MacBook Pro. I'd like to share the network connection via ethernet cable to my eMac, but I can't get it work.
I'd like to use it with screenrecycler and it needs a network connection.
How to do it? How to set up the connection between the client and the host? Could somebedy give me a step by step guide?
    Thank you very much

    Hello,
First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

Just purchased a Time Capsule to back up two MacBook Pros to save iPhotos and stuff.
Do I need to have the internet to do this?
No, an Internet connection is not required to perform Time Machine backups.
Can I just set up the TC as a network alone?
    Yes.
Will I have to change networks from the Airport Extreme to the TC just to do the Time Machine back ups?
Yes, if you are planning on doing wireless backups. The other option is to reconfigure the TC to "join the wireless network" created by the AirPort Extreme.

  • Setting up internet connection with a cell phone as modem

Well, I guess you can figure out what this is all about from the title..
Basically, I have a cell phone (Nokia N95 8GB) which I currently use for my internet connection on Windows XP, connected via USB cable. The question is how I would go about setting it up with Arch.. I really have no idea where to start. I have browsed the Wiki and been Googling for ages without much luck. I would therefore be very grateful if someone would point me in the right direction.
My ISP is Telenor, I live in Norway. I already have the details required for a working connection on Windows, would these be very different on Linux? Or, in other words, do I need additional information?
Do I have to use a "dialer" - like wvdial? If so, where do I get that one without a working internet connection?
Also, I have Arch installed on my US pen drive. Is there a recommended way to make my network settings portable between multiple computers, can I e.g. have multiple profiles?

I used to do this with a Nokia N70, and when I plugged in the USB able, the cdc-acm module would autoload and create a /dev/ttyACM0 interface that could be used by ppp. ppp is on the install iso, btw.
netcfg can handle multiple profiles - I haven't used it with dial-up myself though.

  • CAN'T SET UP INTERNET CONNECTION WIRELESS WITH EA6500 AC1750

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYBODY. MET A PROBLEM WITH MY NEW ROUTER. I DID TRY TO CONNECT MY PC WINDOWS 8 WIRELES. IT'S SHOWS CONNECTED TO ROUTER BUT ACCESS LIMITED, NO INTERNET CONNECTION. ANY IDEAS HOW TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM? I FOUND SOME INFORMATION THAT IT'S WORKS, BUT HOW?? MY LAPTOP WINDOWS 7 WORKS FINE, IPAD TOO. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Hi ivan.kishkin, were you prompted for the password when you tried to connect the PC wirelessly to the router? Did you make sure to type it in correctly? You may actually try to remove preferred networks on the computer also and reconnect to the wireless network. You may refer to this link, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=85537a14b0214be48217c733bba9ac65_Removing_Wireless... and use the steps for Windows 7. Usually that helps.

  • Help in setting up internet connection with AOL

I just purchased a MacBook this week (already have an iMac). I have phone line internet service with AOL as my provider. I purchased the modem from Apple to connect to my phone line. I have tried to use the SetUp Asst. to connect but I am not very computer literate and can't seem to get set up. I need very basic directions. Also, how do I use wifi with the MacBook? I have never used it before - I don't know how to configure it or get it started either. Any help would be tremendously appreciated. Sorry to be so illiterate!

At what point in the setup are you?
Do you have the AOL application installed on the MacBook?

  • Setting up Internet Connection how?

In 1 week I will be moving back to college. At home I have dial up only on my PC. My 20'imac I purchased this summer has no modem. In my new apartment building I am moving into offers wireless connections. My question is when I arrive to my apartment with my imac where will I start to connect to the internet? I have no idea how wireless works so there for I am clueless how my imac will know to connect to the internet
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks

When you get there, make changes from your current setup to your new setup in the Network panel of System Preferences (if your preferences are locked in the bottom left, you'll need to click and unlock with your computer's password):
    Location: Automatic
    Show: Network Port Configurations
If you'll be using wireless, check the "On" box for AirPort and drag the entire AirPort line to the top of the list. Uncheck the other boxes if you will only ever be connecting via wireless. Although I always use wireless, I have "Built-in Ethernet" checked and positioned immediately below AirPort, just in case I might need to use a wired connection at some unexpected moment. When finished, before moving on to the next pane, click the "Apply Now" button at bottom right on the panel.
Next, switch from "Show: Network Port Configurations" to "Show: AirPort" and check the box "Show AirPort status in menu bar." Again, when finished, click the "Apply Now" button at bottom right on the panel. You might wish to continue a bit further by clicking the "Options" button and checking the two boxes for requiring an administrator password. If you do so, don't forget to click the "OK" button, and then again click the "Apply Now" button. Quit System Preferences.
Go to the fan-shaped AirPort icon in your menu bar at the top of your display, open and select "Turn AirPort On." After a few seconds your system should recognize the apartment building's wireless network. It would be wise to know the name in advance, so that you'll know that you've made the desired connection to the wireless system that will always be there for you. If the name of the system does not show, it may not be an open system, and you may need to find out the password and the type of encryption being used, in addition to knowing the name of the system. In that case, use the AirPort icon to select "Other..." and at the prompt first select the type of encryption, then enter the name and password of the wireless system. Enjoy!

  • Arch laptop + wireless as an internet connection [solved]

I want to use my Arch laptop which is connected via Wifi as an internet source for a wired box.  Is this possible?
    [laptop] <----- cat 5e -------> [windows machine]

Yep, you can use iptables and masquerading.
    1) If your wifi card has an IP like 192.168.0.x, then create a wired connection with a static IP 192.168.10.x (for example.)
    2) Add in rc.local (or wherever you want):
    echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
    iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.10.0/24 -o wlan0 -j MASQUERADE
    3) Configure your other PC with a static IP 192.168.10.y and 192.168.10.x as gateway.
There may be other ways to do that but it worked for my Xbox a couple of years ago .
Edit: oh, you might need a hub or switch between the two machines though...

  • N8 apps make unwanted internet connection automati...

    Dear users,
I have had my N8 for a week now. It's beautiful, but there is only one issue I cannot resolve.
With my other Nokia's (also Vodafone as provider) I was able to set any internet connection manually by selecting "Always ask" in the phone's connection settings to prevent the phone from making expensive internet Vodafone connections, especially when being abroad.
With my new N8, Vodafone has secured my internet connections (Vodafone Live), so I am not able to edit the connections anymore and make adjustments. I noticed that with many apps from the Ovi Store, my phone immediately selects Vodafone Live as an internet connection automatically, There is no way to change this or to prevent the app from making the connection to Vodafone Live. Even when my home Wifi network is in range.
Anyone with the same problem? Is it a Vodafone issue? Is Vodafone trying to push users to use their internet connection by protecting the connection settings for Vodafone Live?
    Thank you so much...

Shutting down (by widget) scanning for WiFi or disconnecting gives no improvment, still connecting about 3 sec after disconnecting.
    Remove/Editing/Adding again connections
    gives no effect
Restarting phone does not help. Widgets are offline.
    setting -> connectivity -> admin.setting -> package data -> when needed/when exist
    gives no effect
Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Data use in home country
     Automatic/Always ask/WLAN only/Home network only
    gives no effect
Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Switch to WLAN
    Only know WLANs/Manual
    gives no effect
    Any ideas ??
FOUND IT !! Thank you ISMOK it was mail synchronising, after turning off every day it has stopped connecting.

I need your help on this.
    Best rgds, joven

It does not matter how you set the internet connection type on the second router when nothing connects to the internet port. The internet connection type is used for the configure of the connection through the internet port. As nothing is connected in the internet port the setting is basically inoperable and makes no difference whatever you set there. You should not set a static IP address as that may affect the routing tables on the router even if the internet interface is down. Thus, just leave it on Automatic/DHCP and it should be fine.

  • Setting up a new TC.  Everything went fine.  I was able to connect a macbook air, 2 ipads, an Iphone 6, and even a windows 7 PC.  All devices showed a complete and functioning internet connection, but none of the devices could access the internet.

I am trying to set up internet connection to my home using a 3gig Airport time capsule as a router.  I unplugged the cable from the existing router, and plugged it into the ethernet port of the TC.  The TC fired up found tttttttthe internet connection, and glowed green.  I set up the password, and all, and was then able to connect a Windows 7 PC, 2 ipads, and iphone 6, and a macbbook air, all running the most current os.  All devices connect with the internet via the Airport device.  they all say that there is a fully functioning internet connection, but none of them can actually connect to the internet.  When I run a speed test via OKLA I am told that the test failed to innatiate. When I try to do a search I get an error message that the page cannot open because safari cannot make a secure connection to the server.
    Any suggestions?

Inside the house I have what looks like a phone cable that is plugged into a power supply, and into a router.
What is this router?? Is it the TC or a router supplied by the ISP?
It will depend on how the system works.. but the instructions from skybeam are fairly simple.. you just setup a router with dhcp set on the WAN port for connection.
On the airport utility open your TC by clicking it then clicking edit.
Make sure the WAN is set correctly and the ISP ethernet cable is plugged into it.
And make sure Network is set to DHCP and NAT.
Please give me the screenshots of the same things from your setup.
