Automation in a region

I did this once a very long time ago on the logic trial, and I forgot how to do this. The manual doesn't seem to be helping...
I have a synthesizer channel strip, and in this one particular region I want to automate its cutoff frequency so that when the region is looped, the sequence of automation points is also looped. How do I do this
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Logic Express 7.2.3

Hi,
You can automate ANY plugin parameter at al, including the one you wanted (freq cutoff)
All you have to do is select it in the automation channel.

  • "Move Current Track Automation Data to Region" doesn't work for all

I have been using the 'Move Current Track Automation Data to Region' and while it works fine for some types of automation data like channel volume, pan and some plugin parameters, it doesn't work for all of them.
I haven't done exhaustive research into which parameters work and which don't, but most of the parameters for individual voices within Ultrabeat don't - which is annoying as that is what I was trying to use it for.
Any ideas about this, or workarounds?

OK, well an update on this in case anyone's interested.
With some further experimentation I have discovered that this problem did not exist in Logic 7 - ie you can move current track automation data for individual Ultrabeat voices to the region.
It's also possible to move automation data for individual Ultrabeat voices using 'Move All Track Automation Data to Region,' so I suppose this is a kind of workaround, though it can be annoying if you don't want to move all track automation data.
I'm now assuming this is a bug in Logic 8; is there any way to convert a Logic 8 project to work in Logic 7, as this along with the touch tracks bug is making working in Logic 8 very frustrating?

  • Repeating automation together with region?

How can I when I' m repeating a region on a track also get the automation in the region repeated?
Message was edited by: Ron H.

    1. You can Export the region *as a new audio file* and use that instead of the original region. Put it on a new track and you can use the RR command no problem!
(You can also put it on the same track, but then don't forget to delete the old automation.)
    2. I haven't tried this yet, but it should work: open the *Automation Event editor* with ctrl-⌥-E . Then open a new Arrange window, ⌘-1. This new arrange window displays regions exclusively containing automation, so anything you do here only affects automation. The Repeat regions command should work on those automation-regions too.
3rd (old option) copy the original region by ⌥dragging. Select both. Dragcopy. Select all four. Dragcopy. Etc. In five steps you can make up to 32 copies.
remark: I think it is an oversight that the Repeat Regions command does not 'listen' to the Copy Automation with Regions-preference. Another feature/fix request to send to Apple.
    regards, Erik.

  • Scaling Automation in selected regions?

I know how to scale automation for a whole track using the command key and and the automation fader, but how do you do this for a selected region of a track? say maybe 20 bars in the middle of the song on track X? I did a search here and couldn't find anything that helped, I apologise if this is an obvious question, but I would love the answer...

Shift-rubber band select the group of nodes you want to adjust, and drag your selection up or down.

  • Is it possible to drag regions and control if AUTOMATION moves too?

I know I can make Logic ALWAYS or NEVER move automation data with regions. My problem is that 50% of the time I move a region I want the automation data to move with it and 50% of the time I don't want the automation to move. Is there a key command or something I can press in either automation default mode that will override that default mode? Is there another solution?
    Thanks for any help!

There are three modes, *Never, Always* or Ask. If you ask me I'ld answer that Ask is your answer.
I was worried that was the case... I was hoping there was a key command that I could hold while dragging a region to control what happens to the automation.
I usually use ASK but I find it frustrating to have the dialogue pop up every time I move a region. Grrrr! Is there no other alternative?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Region based automation could be better

Just want to put this out there...
Region based automation was one of the things which i thought Apple had finally changed for the better but after using it for a while I'm not so sure.
Its great to be able to put the automation within the region but i feel they really should have extended the idea to mean it doesnt affect the channel strip volume. What I'm suggesting is that there should be 2 lanes of volume automation, one for the region, and one for the channel.
This would mean having much greater control over volume changes of individual regions but not having to worry about the overall track/channel level.
Ill send the feedback to apple but first thought id see if anyone agrees or could add to it.

You want "convert track automation to region automation" and you can find it I think in the right-click menu and if not there then either in one of the arrange local menus or up in the global mix menu. Poke around and you'll find it.

  • How do you copy and paste automation?

Is there a way to copy and paste automation in logic instead of redrawing the same automation later in the song I asked the same question a few weeks ago and some one replied to go to automation preferences and change the setting move automation with regions to always or ask I did this but this simply just moves the automation with the region if you drag it from its original place I want to copy and paste the region and the have the automation with it hope someone knows what I'm on about cheers
p.s does any know if there is a key board command to turn the cycle mode on/off I looked in the key command preferences but could not find it

Hold down the option key, then drag the region. This will copy the regions AND the automation (as long as you have automation preferences set to move the automation with the region).
Also, there is a hidden feature in Logic, that used to be called the automation folder. t was accessible via a key command in Logic 6, and then they removed that key command in version 7. Why they hid this is beyond me, as it is a very useful thing.
But if you go to your key commands and assign a key command to "Automation Event List", this will open an Event List window showing you the songs automation. Now with that List Window open, hit Apple/1. This opens a new Arrange page, but you'll notice that this new arrange page is showing you all the songs automation data, represented as regions.
From this page, you can then cut and move your automation just like you do audio and MIDI regions.

  • Sudden volume change in a region

    Hello all--
I am doing a piece that's quite repetitive, using 2-measure regions that I have repeated as needed doing option-drag. On one track, one region, and one only, has a huge volume jump; I'm talking about 10-12 db! I can't find anything to account for it. Velocities are all the same, nothing done in the mixer (though the volume change is registering loud and clear on the fader). Is there something I'm missing? I could dip the fader using automation for this region, but that's a workaround, of course, and besides, since I'm a relative newbie, I'd like to learn something if there's a more "elegant" solution.
    Thanks in advance!
    later,
    John

    Hi again--
I fixed the problem with a gentle hint from over on Dave's Logic Pro Help board. I had done a real Stupid Newbie Trick: accidentally dragged one region on top of another identical one, therefore intensifying it! Duhhh... Well, it might be good to have a way of seeing that's happened, since it doesn't show up in any obvious way in the Piano Roll Editor or the Event List. But I'm not excusing myself. Live, admit stupidity, learn... Onward and upward!
    later,
    John
PS Ben, there are more Tenneys than you might think! In fact, there's another John Tenney (my full name) who's also a musician! (not a professional violinist like me, but still...)

  • Moving and Copying/Pasting Track Automation Data

    Hello,
I am a fan of using track automation data to control the volume levels on the faders of my Audio Instrument tracks. I am NOT using the track automation assigned to regions, I am using the ones assigned to tracks. If I move a region, however, the automation data (not surprisingly) does not move with the track. What is the easiest way to move automation data on a track? Is there a way to shift all automation data over a specified amount of measures etc?
Furthermore, I would like to copy ALL of the track automation on one track, and move it to another track (and keep the relative distance between all nodes, etc equal). How can I do this?
    Thank you very much,
    Connor
    iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (ALS)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2 GB RAM

I think you need to shift-drag select (rubber band select) the
automation stuff and when it's highlighted, hold option, click hold
drag and what you selected will be copied to the new location you
drag it to. You need to be pretty careful to option click hold
exactly on the automation line, if you miss it won't invoke the copy

  • How do you copy a volume (automation)

how do you copy a volume (automation) in a selected region into another region

Options > Track Automation > Move All Region Control Data to Track Automation.

  • How do I insert a new track/region into a medley of songs without impacting the timing in all subsequent tracks/regions?

I have edited the regions in each track so they are synced nicely from one to the next in order to create a medley that I will export for an iMovie slide show project. But I I have now thought of some new song segments I want to add to the medley at different points in the medley. The problem is that if I insert a new song segment as a new track at any point before the end, the syncing is lost in all subsequent tracks. Help please! Thank you.

    Hello Julian,
if you frequently have to rearrange parts of your project, I would suggest to have a look at the arrangement track.(see also the GB help section on Arrangement Track). In the arrangement track you can label parts of your song with names like "chorus", "intro", and then drag these parts around and arrange them freely, with all the timing and automation you added. And yes, you should lock the automation to the regions.

  • Automation does not work

    Hallo,
I automated two Logic Plug Ins on two different tracks.
On Track A it shows dB labels in the automation-region on Track B it only shows numerics such as 67 for o dB.
And only Track A automation works and does whatever I want to automate.
Track B Automation does not affect anything whatever I try to automate.
Both in the same logic session.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Any help is appreciated.

You could also copy the automation from A1 to A56, provided these CEQ's are in the same number slot of course. To copy just automation, open the automation event list (ctrl-cmd-E) and subsequently open a new arrange window (cmd-1). You should get a window entitled *Project Name:Automation.* The regions in this arrange only contain automation.
THANK YOU! I copied the automation from the above track to the faulty one (in the automation arrange window) and suddenly all the displays are in dB and the automation is working correct. Back in business!
    Thanks Eriksimon.

  • Automation is drivng me mad, screenshots inside of the craziness.  HELP!

Ok so on a project I am working on, I needed to shorten a section. So I took out four bars, and proceeded to select all the regions (in this case, an assortment of waveforms and midi/sequencer regions) that came after the four bars I removed in order to drag them four bars back to complete the shortening.
It asked me of course, do you want to move automation data with regions, and I said YES. But Logic only partially moved it, and in some cases erased and/or altered the automation that used to be there. I took screen shots of one such occurance that took place after the drag.
    BEFORE:
    AFTER:
So as you can see, it will not move the automation data that comes after the region ending. I tried dragging the region out to the edge of the last bit of automation, and this did not change anything.
Also there was another thing that heppened, on another track. Right before a waveform began, there was a two node automation change (a volume increase) and when the waveform was moved horizontally, instead of that two node automation moving horizontally with it, the two nodes were erase and the end result was an undesired extremely long and gradual volume increase.
There must be some solution to this HIGHLY aggrivating problem. I tried some sort of way to be able to select automation data and regions together so that when i dragged the regions that the automation I would select would move equivalently but there is not a way to select both automation and regions as far as I could tell.
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, thanks,

Download the Automation file, and see if it helps.

  • Duplicating Effects Automation

I can't figure out how to duplicate the locked effects automation for a region. I'm able to move the region around and the automation curve moves with it, but whenever I try copy/pasting a region to another point in the track, it doesn't copy the automation curve with it. I tried looking this up in the Help guide and all it told me was that I needed to copy and paste a region as opposed to just looping it, which is what I'm doing. Am I just missing something? Any assistance would be vastly appreciated!

I can't figure out how to duplicate the locked effects automation for a region
instead of copy/paste, option-drag the region.

  • Generate automation from Environment ?

Is it possible to generation automation from within the Environment ?
I've set up a rather extensive Environment for mapping MIDI footswitch commands into Logic, using cable switchers, transformers, and faders to bypass, mute, control faders, etc. This is for live use, so I need everything to happen in real-time.
It's all working great, but I'd like to control a few things in plug-ins that aren't accessible via MIDI--in particular, the stomp box bypasses in Amplitube2.
I could use controller assignments to perform these actions, but it wouldn't work well with the rest of my Environment, since I use cable switchers to route MIDI to different places--a controller assignment would intercept ALL messages from that controller, so I couldn't use the controller for other functions.
The controls I need are easily accessible via automation--is there any way to use the Environment to generate automation data ? Maybe with SysEx or Meta events ? What I'd like to do is create a transformer that turns a controller message into an automation event that I can route into a particular object (Amplitube on an insert).
    Possible ?
    Thanks for any help!

The other thing you could try is to record your
MIDI-based "automation" and then use the Options >
Automation function to convert region automation to
track automation. See how that works.
Cool! This worked. When I moved the controls in the plug-in, I didn't get any output from the fader, so I assumed there was no MIDI-like info related.
But... as you suggested... I created track automation, converted to region automation, copied the data from the Event Editor, and pasted into an Environment fader as SysEx... bingo! Works great!
That is, as long as I've got the Environment...
    Thanks, again, iS!
