Automator not working/ won't open
All,
When I try to open (anything!), nothing happens. On the console I see:

Automator will happily sit there forever, and never give me a dialog. 'New' does nothing as well. 'Open Recent...' will actually give me a Message box about opening the file, but that will sit there forever until I quit Automator.
I am running Lion 10.7.4 on my MBP (Early-2011) w/16GB Memory.
Any ideas about what's going on??

Ok, in case anyone runs into this item, here's the solution:
Seems I had an older version of Automator on my computer. When you run the older version, its looking for specific hooks that no longer are around. Once I removed the older version and used the newer version, everything worked as expected.
So word to the wise: Don't move Automator out of the applicaitons folder, as that will cause you issues down the road during the next update.

just loaded Mountain lion, went to about this mac to see if worked, won't open (about this mac) About this Mac is listed, nothing happens when I click on it.
I opened System Profiler by launching it from Utilities.
It comes up with a different name to the admin name though. Maybe that's why it won't open from "About this Mac"?
For example, the computer's name when I set it up using the USB installer stick is "Harry Potter".
But the old MBA that I had was named "js".
When I install programs, it comes up with "Harry Potter", put in password.
However, when I look up the System Profiler information using Utilities, it comes up with "js's MacBook Air (2)".
Does that matter?
Is the name thing causing the problem with the "About This Mac" not opening?
I am really confused about all of this.
The information in the System Profiler is about the newer MBA.
Should I just not worry about this problem? And just open it up from Utilities if I need to look up System Profiler information? -

When I try to open a new tab using the "+" on the toolbar, nothing happens. Even trying to use the cntl t to open a new tab does not work. To open a new tab, I must right click on a hyperlink. how can I correct this? Using Firefox 3.6.18
The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons -
my desktop is not working when i open it all it does is show the color weal and it never gos away on my mac book pro how do i fix it?
It means, tentatively, that system files are missing or damaged and you will have to reinstall Snow Leopard. See the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -
my i4s wifi button is not working. when i opened the setting and then wifi the button is greyed out. then i opened general and then about. in the bar of wifi address it is written N/A. what does its mean. i have done all other things like setting >general<reset<reset network setting. but all in vain. tell me the solution
restore your phone as new through itunes. if the issue persists after a factory restore via itunes, it means you've got a hardware issue and the phone needs to be repaired

Please let me know what I can do to get my Numbers (iWork 09) working properly again.
Here is what is going on:
Numbers in iWork 09 not working can't access Blank, Checklist and many other files within Numbers. I can open the program but only a few files are available. When I click on the file (which also has no icon just the name of the file) this warning appears:
The document "Blank.nmbtemplate" is invalid. The index.xml file is missing.
I recently had to get a new hard drive installed and had the system upgraded and more memory put in by a Mac certified specialist recommended to me from the Apple store in Northbrook because this was the 3rd time my drive went bad but this time it was to old (I got the IMAC- in 2007) and the Apple store could no longer work on it this time so they recommended a few places that had certified Mac specialists. Since then Numbers is not working right.
I'm sure it's something simple to fix, but I've tried re installing it and that didn't work. Appreciate any help.

AppMareThere is one way its getting fixed. Once I update my Adobe Illustrator CC to Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 it is further allowing me to go into the system folder and allocate the font to the file so that it can replace it. My only concern now is that our MAC partners who will receive these files back from us have Adobe CS6. We will down save it to CS6 but I hope they won't experience any font issues because of us using CC 2014? Any light you can shed on this?

Help! My iMovie (6, I think. Not the newest one) won't open. I get this error message asking me if I want to try again or reopen or report the problem to apple. I've done all these things a million times. I downloaded the latest iMovie update (Sept. 07) and when it came time to install the error message said I couldn't install it in my hard drive because there isn't a valid version of iMovie on there! iMovie always had problems opening up. But last night I got it to work for a few hours and then turned it off. Now it won't open. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.
Repairing permissions is easy. After you have updated Quicktime, go to MAC HD/applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. In the disk utility panel you will see your hard disk displayed in the left hand side of the window. Click on the top hard disk icon (the one with all the numbers in it,) In the bottom of the display that pops up, you will see a button called Repair Disk Permissions. Click on that...and wait.
I wouldn't reinstall iMovie just yet. See if my suggestions resolve the problem first. -
Automation not working in multi output stereo?
I changed my stereo outputs into multi output stereo and noticed that the volume automation is not being read any more. All the volume levels are still moving up and down but the sound itself stays at the same level. I tried out what would happen if I set them back to normal stereo and yes, the automation works again. Why is this?
Have you tried opening the file in your browser to see if the bookmarks are working? To open the file in your browser you need to do this:
1) Launch your favorite browser;
2) File >> Open >> Select your pdf file

Automator not working properly after updating to OS 10.10.2
I just updated to 10.10.2 and Automator in Safari is not working properly. I set up 10 URLs to open but only the first 4 open. The rest give a message "You can't open Safari because it is not responding". Any help would be appreciated.

Using an iMac 21.5, late 2013Happen to me too. Looks like a Bug. Installed 10.9.2 and it turned on Safari in the iCloud Sytem Preferences.
Thank god I had a backup. And then my wife logged into the same computer and it messed them up again.
I wish I knew where the iCloud bookmark file was. I've tried goggling it, ut no luck.
So If at one point in time if you turn it on it uploads the bookmark file somewere in the cloud, then you turn it off then change your bookmarks to something differnet it's OK. Just don't turn it on again.
Hopefully the bug was on the software update! -
Please help me!! I have Windows 8.1 and Adobe CS6 creative Suite. Adobe Acrobat x just quit, It won't open anything and it wont print to PDF. I need this for work!
Typically, the repair is done from the Control Panel>Programs & Features. In the future, try that route. Glad you found something that worked. When you do come to the forums for help, you may not get an immediate response, but may have to wait for someone familiar with your issue happens to check the forum, possibly after work. In any case, glad you have a working product again.

IPad Notes App Won't Open - A Workaround
The Notes app on my Ipad suddenly stopped working. Whenever I clicked on the app, the app would start to load then flash the notes list for a brief Secound then close. I tried every conceivable method to recover the functionality. I closed the app from the home screen, rebooted the iPad, nothing worked. I even tried quickly opening a note as the list flashed. No luck.
Finally, I thought, what if I could do a search that would pull up a note. I did just that. I typed in a word I knew was in one of my notes and the note listed in the search window. From there I was able to open my notes app. I opened and closed the app several times and all seemed to be back to normal.Both methods were work arounds. If they don't work try more traditional methods. If your Notes won't open neither method can make them work less.

Automator not working properly while setting comments and moving files to folders, how to proceed?
So, this is my workflow, i've converted it into a folder action and applied it to a folder called "Automator" in my desktop:
i've turned "show this action when the workflow runs" so I can see what is going wrong
here's what I get (each action happens to have a problem to it)
1) Get specified finder items
2/3) Filter / find finder items
those are there just to work for this simple porpouse: identify that i've dropped a pdf file in the "Automator" folder
I move the PDF
The workflows starts
4) Ask for a text
this would be a prompt for me to add a comment to go to the "Spotlight Comment" section when I click on "get info"
put instead I get this...
that's the directiory that the file is in!
so I type some random text that would go to the spotlight comment section
then click OK
5) Set Spotlight Comments for Finder Items
that's the actual action, it should have the text that i've inputted in the last step, but instead it has this:
(Text is the variable that i've setted up to be shown on the ask for text and set spotlight comment...)
so, I have to manually input the comments I want to be on the file
and click continue
6) Label Finder Items
That's the action where i'm suppose to choose the label color, so I do that and click continue
this should work, but the file doesn't change label at all
nothing happens.
7) Move Finder Items
It should move to the "untitled folder", but again, it doesn't.
and that's it.
It's a PDF file, but it's not recognized by the system as a PDF.
When it is recognized, if I move more than one PDF file, the workflow works for just one PDF, instead of working for all of them!
I would reeeeally appreciate any help
the whole point in this was for me not to buy Hazel, but I think I will end up buying it :/

BUT, it didn't work...
well, it did, partially
I still don't get any comments on the "Spotlight comments" area and when I convert the workflow to a folder action, it does not recognize the file!
here's my workflow:
here's what I did, step by step:
first I added find finder's items, that worked really well, but it labeled all the finders files that were in the folder AND subfolders (the ones that were suppose to already be labeled right)
then I removed the find finder's items and tried, worked well, but I hadn't checked the "ignore the input", so the comments weren't working
so then I ignored the input on the actions that didn't require an iput, so my workflow is the same as yours now… and It's not working.
at first it worked for only 1 pdf, but no comments
then it worked for 50% of the pdfs, with comments
then it stopped working at all.
added the find finders items
worked while testing with one
saved
tried with 7 at the same time
worked… but didn't get any spotlight comments
went back on automator
checked "show this action when the workflow runs" for the spotlight comments action
added the variable as an answer on the "ask for text"
the variable ran as expected, I had the same input I've inputed as an answer for the "ask for text" on the "spotlight comments" action, label went okay and stuff, but i did not get any spotlight comment on the spotlight comment section!!
went back on automator and checked out the "append to existing comments" on "set spotlight comments for finder items"
and still didn't get any comments on the files!
btw, I went back on the automator and removed the find finder items
then tried again with only one file, dropping it in the application. it worked, but I still didn't get any spotlight comments!!
I also tried deleting the ask for text and tried just
but it did not work
I also converted the workflow that working for all expect the comments to a folder action, and it DID NOT recognize the pdf I dropped in the folder, what do I do?! -
