I use systemd and udisks2.service is running well.
Do you have an idea of how I can correct this?

Gnome 3.4.1 is more impressive on a multitouch computer, given that GTK 3.4 has also been released (features multitouch support), and many of the gnome apps support scrolling with fingers now, which is unbelievably useful.
<OT>You know, this laptop is 4 years old, and I've been scrolling with fingers since the day I got it </OT>

  • Since update to gnome 3.4 gnome-control-center and sound broken

    Hi,
I updated from 3.2 to 3.4 using sudo pacman -Syu.
Since the update there are many things broken.
I don't have any sound and when I try to start the gnome settings I get following:

What is broken and how do I fix it?

So, I fixed the audio issue with removing all unrequired packages.
But additional the workspace shifting is now unstable but sound works!
Now only the gnome-controll-center needs a fix
    EDIT:
    Sound still not working:
    I can't adjust the volume.

  • Automounting in Gnome

Basically, I wan't to control what happens when I plug in a usb stick into my computer. Currently, Gnome displays a notification saying "Open folder with Thunar", which I want to change.
Problem is, I can't find where this is configured. I checked dconf-editor and in "org.gnome.desktop.media-handling" both automount and automount-open are checked. I also tried checking PolKit, but I have no rules on the system at all in /etc/polkit-1/rules.d , is this correct.
So, in summery, very simple question. How do I change the action presented to me by gnome when a removable media is added to the system?

You can define what to do in the settings, from GNOME. Open gnome-control-center -> Details -> removable media. It doesn't list automount per sé, but you can configure it to open the folder and more. It might be what you're looking for.
Other than that, perhaps Thunar doesn't work properly with gnome-desktop's way of detecting and mounting devices. It might be worth it to look into using Nautilus.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.10 Icons are broken

I upgraded earlier to Gnome 3.10. Although I've had a lot of problems.. I'm working on them one at a time.
Most of the default icons are not showing anymore. My Nautilus looks like this:
Some of the applications icons do still exist.
If I create a new user and log in, the icons are all fine. But I cannot figure out how to bring back icons on my own user account.
I tried running the command on http://askubuntu.com/questions/56313/ho … e-defaults, which set my favourites and wallpaper back to default. Icons still aren't fixed.
I tried running gtk-update-icon-cache on my icons folder. Tried running xdg-user-dirs-update. Tried sudo pacman -S $(pacman -Ssq gnome-icon-theme). Tried running /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache and tried reinstalling librsvg. None of these have helped.
    Thanks.

Not solved for me I'm afraid. I'm running Openbox + Tint2 setup, with quite a few Gnome applications. I use the Oxygen icon theme.
Since the upgrade to the Gnome 3.10 packages, my GTK3 applications have missing icons which only reappear if I choose the GNOME icon theme using lxappearance, which modifies ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. Here's my normal settings.ini:
    [Settings]
    gtk-theme-name=Clearlooks-Phenix
    gtk-icon-theme-name=oxygen
    gtk-font-name=Arimo 9
    gtk-cursor-theme-name=aero-drop
    gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ
    gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU
    gtk-button-images=1
    gtk-menu-images=1
    gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
    gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
    gtk-xft-antialias=1
    gtk-xft-hinting=1
    gtk-xft-hintstyle=hintfull
    gtk-xft-rgba=rgb
When 'gtk-icon-theme-name=gnome' is used instead, the icons display in GTK3 applications.
Any ideas please how I can get the Oxygen theme to play nicely with Gnome 3.10 applications?

  • Automount in gnome

I have a problem with automatic mounting of dvd drive in gnome. When I insert blank DVD it says something's in but when it isn't blank, it doesn't mount it. USB drives mount automatically. In graphics environment as root doesn't the drive mount either.I always have to mount it as root in terminal with command "mount". I've tried it in KDE 4.1 and the DVD mounts and shows everything on it.

  • Gnome-panel's clock is broken

My gnome-panel has been unstable as of late, and my primary suspect is the clock.  Whenever I run "killall gnome-panel", almost everything in gnome-panel fixes itself except for the clock.  I'm not sure what's wrong with it.  I don't use evolution, so I doubt that's the problem.  I also attempted to fix the timezone on /etc/rc.conf, but to no avail.  Might there be a quick a fix I somehow skimmed over while search this forum?
    Thanks for the help.

Not sure what the default is supposed to look like, but here's the configuration.

  • Gnome-panel and/or more broken? solved

    Hi there,
Just to the lead up, I was mounting my school's server's smb drives. I was also experimenting all day getting SSH and SAMBA working to communicate with my old desktop I set up in my room to act as a server. So I was unmounting these network drives (school and server), when all the gnome-panel stuff frozen. AWN was fully functional, as were all the open windows and the desktop. But nothing on the panel worked, menu, windowlist, cpufreq, clock, etc, it was all frozen. I ctrl+alt+backapaced and logged in, great, now theres no panel at all, reboot with the same problem. The panel appeared after around 7 minutes of downtime. During this downtime of the panel, I also could not use alt+F2 run, which did pop up when the panel popped up. Also after the panel popped up, gedit takes way longer than normal to start up.
Any ideas as to what is going on here?
EDIT: Rebooted several times with the same problem of insanely slow start up of the panel, reinstalled all gnome+gnome-extra packages and everything seems to be back to normal for now.

You can turn things off mostly in the applications themself. I for example have the following:
    - Bluetooth Icon (turn on / off in Bluetooth Preferences)
    - Display Icon (turn on / off in Display)
    - Bettery Icon (turn on / off in Power Management)
    - NetworkManager (shows icon by default, I don't know of another way to run this).
    Volume Applet (right-click to remove)
In Preferences - Startup Applications you can specify which programs to run, but I don't think this affects the tray icons.

  • Automounting in Gnome. encoding problem

I have problems with encoding of automounting devices as cdroms and flashdrives with my local encoding
ru_RU.UTF-8. I have no before with the same configs on the KDE!
How can I solve my problem?

Using gconf-editor, go to /system/storage/default_options/vfat and add to mount_options the string "utf8".
    That solved it for me.

  • [Solved] Permission issues for automounted devices in Gnome 3

I am unable to write into any device after it has been automounted in Gnome 3. I get the following error:
There was an error copying the file into /run/media/dhaval/3C2E3A4E2E3A0206. Permission denied.
I set up Gnome 3 according to the instructions in the wiki. Searching through the forums did not lead to any results.
This happens with all external devices and also with my internal secondary hard drive.

    Solved!!
Installed ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs. Everything works now.
Thank you so much everyone for helping me out!

  • Gnome 3 starting in fallbackmode

    Hi all.
I've a Inspiron 9400 with a Radeon Mobility X1400 card. Gnome 3 starts in fallback it says that card have no accelerated support, but when I try a Fedora Live with Gnome 3 it starts correctly in standard mode.
I'm not using t xorg.conf file and I'm using the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (the same as Live Fedora).

Ok, compilation successful with the above patch applied. I also rebooted to make sure everything will get loaded for scratch and applied export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none in /etc/environment. So far:
    1) Fonts are looking just fine, no artifacts whatsoever in the panel or elsewhere I got so far.
    2) Applications menu still crash.
    3) GTK2 applications also crash. I opened up leafpad, it run, but failed to open a file and crashed the entired desktop. I have no oxygen-gtk installed on my system.
Generally speaking I like GNOME 3 quite much, not as much as GNOME 2, but crashing the whole desktop by just one application or just something less importand like the menu, its just a show stopper. I hope they will somehow fix these issues in the next releases.

  • Advise GNOME 3.4 theme with unified look for GKT3/GTK2

For older versions of GNOME 3.x I used Aldabra, and I was reasonably satisfied with this theme. But in GNOME 3.4 it's broken, GTK2 apps look like crap.
So, I've been wondering if there's any other theme that looks close to Aldabra/Adwaita and has a consistent look across GTK3 and GTK2 (which is really important for the obsessive perfectionist inside of me).
    Any recommendations?

I don't know if this is of any help, but I'm running XFCE now and a set of themes that looks nice for both toolkits are Zukitwo. I'd say you give them a try.

First, let me say I'm not just new to Arch, but new to Linux as well.  Been playing with it off & on for years, but mostly 'off'.  In the last 3 weeks I've installed 10-12 different distros between my 2 home PC's and VMware on my laptop.  I've installed Arch probably 5 times now, and have got the process down pretty good.  I've probably learned more about linux from installing and configuring Arch than any other distro, book, web site, etc.  So now I've got it up and running again in VMware on an Ubuntu 7.10 install on my old pc.  I've got gnome working, sound is fine, samba is fine, really no problems.  Except mounting USB drives.  I've read several posts here and the wiki, but nothing seems to be clear really.
I think it may be a problem in the VM environment, but I want to be sure.  I'm planning to replace my Sidux install on my main PC with Arch later today or tomorrow.  Assuming I get it installed, and get gnome installed, will the gnome volume manager work like it does in other distros?  I don't mind doing the config by hand, but I do a lot with USB flash drives and USB hard drives, and it seems like it just doesn't work very well in Arch.  I actually replaced my ubuntu install last week with Arch, but got tired of trying to access my music on my USB drive, never could get it to mount.  So I just re-installed Ubuntu (shame on me, I know).
So any help in getting some understanding in what needs to be done would be greatly appreciated.  (forgot to mention, I did follow the wiki steps for autofs, as well as the usb drive wiki stuff).
    Thanks.

it's all working fine now, the problem was in the VM.  I installed Arch on my main PC, and except for being an idiot, all went well.  My USB drives automount in gnome, as does my CD.  Haven't tried the ipods yet, but I'm sure there won't be a problem.  Key for me:  add my user to the storage group and reboot (logging off would of done the trick too I'm guessing).  Had the same problem with setting up X, needed to reboot and all was well.  Great distro, a helluva lot of fun to install and configure, and I've only done so little:)

  • Massive icons after Gnome 3.14 update

    Hey all,
I have just updated to Gnome 3.14 and have notice that a few packages load with huge icons, they're massive lol.
See here for an example with Nemo : http://i.imgur.com/xMp5taq.png

Same problem here + gedit menu items are non-responsive to the cursor. I've only found this thread with two solutions seemingly valid but they don't work for me.
Openbox, no DE, I don't stick with either Qt or GTK apps, I use what fits to me, and I have a 1920x1080 resolution.
    Looks ridiculous...
Edit: As the other topic suggested I checked other icon themes and with half of what I have the icons are normal sized. Hopefully it stays that way. Nothing on the gedit menu problem yet.
Edit 2: So if I change GTK theme, the problem goes away. At least with some of my themes.
It seems to me that whatever "upgrade" just happened with GNOME and GTK, they've broken compatibility with lots of color/icon themes thus producing this bug. It's not the windows scaling, it's the theme management. Taking a closer look at the themes, every one of them have GTK3 compatibility but that's the closest look I can give.
If I open gedit with a non-working theme I get:
    gedit
    (gedit:3719): Gtk-WARNING **: Error setting gtk-xft-antialias in /home/lynx/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini: A kulcsfájl tartalmazza a(z) „gtk-xft-antialias” kulcsot a(z) „Settings” csoportban, amelynek értéke nem értelmezhető.
    (gedit:3719): Gtk-WARNING **: Error setting gtk-xft-hinting in /home/lynx/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini: A kulcsfájl tartalmazza a(z) „gtk-xft-hinting” kulcsot a(z) „Settings” csoportban, amelynek értéke nem értelmezhető.
(gedit:3719): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:197:14: Theming engine 'adwaita' not found
(gedit:3719): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:610:15: Theming engine 'adwaita' not found
(gedit:3719): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:885:15: Theming engine 'adwaita' not found
    (gedit:3719): dconf-WARNING **: Unable to open /root/.local/share/dconf/profile/user: Engedély megtagadva
The first two warnings translates to:
Gtk-WARNING **: Error setting gtk-xft-antialias in /home/lynx/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini: Key file contains key 'gtk-xft-antialias' in group 'Settings' which has a value that cannot be interpreted
and the last sentence is: Permission denied.
Interestingly I get the same with a working theme but fewer from the similar warnings. Same goes for gnome-terminal with working and with non-working icon themes.

  • HOWTO: Gnome 2 with up-to-date core system

This manual for clear install system only. Use it at your own risk. There is no guarantee of future without conflicts between the dependencies. If you want global upgrade (pacman -Syu) after Gnome 2 installation, make sure you masked all Gnome 2 packages in /etc/pacman.conf.
Task: Gnome 2 (from Arch Rollbak Machine) with up-to-date system packages
Step 1. Install a core system.
Install new core system with netinstall cd or with core cd. If you use core cd, make sure you update your system with "pacman -Syu" after installation.
    Step 2. Xorg, drivers, sound
Usual Xorg, drivers and sound installation with wiki installation guide =]
    Step 3. Gnome 2
Replace appropriate lines in /etc/pacman.conf with:
    [core]
    #Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/29/core/os/i686
    [extra]
    #Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/29/extra/os/i686
    [community]
    #Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/29/community/os/i686
    Update and install gnome 2:
    pacman -Sy gnome
    or with gnome-extra meta-package:
    pacman -Sy gnome gnome-extra
Step 4. Conflicts and fix for them
Gstreamer0.10-plugins require neon, but newest neon not can be installed (krb5 and heimdal conflict).
Some packages (pidgin, for example) require cyrus-sasl-plugins, but newest cyrus-sasl-plugins not can be installed (krb5 and heimdal conflict).
We can install old neon and old cyrus-sasl-plugins for fix this problem (see 5 step also):
Replace appropriate lines in /etc/pacman.conf with:
    [extra]
    #Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/05/05/extra/os/i686
Update and install neon and cyrus-sasl-plugins:
    pacman -Sy neon cyrus-sasl-plugins
Well, now we can install gstreamer0.10-plugins and pidgin from up-to-date repositories. See step 5.
    Step 5. Final.
Rollback commented lines in pacman.conf (come back to up-to-date repositories):
    [core]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    #Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/29/core/os/i686
    [extra]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    #Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/04/29/extra/os/i686
    [community]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    #Server = http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/05/05/community/os/i686
    Update:
    pacman -Syy
and install other packages which you need. For me:
    pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins firefox pidgin
Warning! There is no guarantee of future conflicts between the dependencies. If you want global upgrade (pacman -Syu) after Gnome 2 installation, make sure you masked all Gnome 2 packages in /etc/pacman.conf.
    I hope this helps someone.
P.S.: Sorry for my bad english =]

wonder wrote:i really don't want that to our wiki. it gives the impression we are supporting gnome 2

wonder wrote: basically what are you explaining to me is that you don't have any stability issues but instead you prefer old versions. in this case arch is not for you and you prefer a distribution like debian
With all due respect to the Arch big dogs, I respectfully, completely disagree with your stance regarding Gnome 3.
Wouldn't the above quotes be a perfect example of group think? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink
Why are all the Gnome 2 users expected to just roll over and comply to Gnome's force feeding desktop users to test the Shell that was obviously designed for a system without mouse intergration, ie tablets, etc?
I come to the force feed testing conclusion based on the following facts:
    1) Gnome switched libraries and or dependencies that made it nearly if not completely impossible to run Gnome 2 and 3 DE on the same root system.
    2) Gnome did not implement the fall back mode features that would have made Gnome 3 a usable replacement for Gnome2.
    3) Gnome knowingly released a seriously broken for the desktop with version 3.
    4) Gnome must have focused all development resources on Gnome shell designed for the tablet (big new potential market) because of all the missing features in "fallback" aka "desktop" mode.
    5) Gnome appears to have turned their back on regular desktop users, at least those who prefer to use a mouse.
If the desktop users debug the Shell, it will be closer to prime time during the next predicted big computer marketing thing, the tablet.
Isn't Linux supposed to be all about community, choice, contribution, etc? Does this include Arch?
If someone has figured out a way to avoid the Gnome 3 train wreck, and retain his version of the best of an Arch/Gnome2 system, more power to him...
If that someone has taken the time to document his accomplishments, has he not contributed by sharing that info?
Out of concern for this thread getting moved, lost or deleted in the future, and  to have neocrust's info available to the most people ................
I'd like to suggest an alternative to what has been discussed here so far. How about a link at the bottom of the Gnome wiki page with a title like, Gnome 2 on Arch "UNOFFICIAL"?
If that's agreeable to the Arch big dogs, I'd gladly donate an account on my website http://www.jeffstory.org/wordpress/ if neocrust would be interested in maintaining and updating it.
Oh, and regarding the last quote by wonder, would it have been more appropriate to suggest an alternative DE rather than basically saying, go away from Arch? I really prefer Arch, so I  chose to switch to XFCE rather than distros... If I had more Linux smarts, Id have likely taken the same path as neocrust.
