Automounting with udev/hal

Hey,
I've gone through this, specifically:
KERNEL=="sd[a-z]", NAME="%k", SYMLINK+="usbhd-%k", GROUP="users", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", SYMLINK+="usbhd-%k", GROUP="users", NAME="%k"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", PROGRAM=="/lib/initcpio/udev/vol_id --label %N", ENV{dir_name}="%c"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", PROGRAM!="/lib/initcpio/udev/vol_id --label %N", ENV{dir_name}="usbhd-%k"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /media/%E{dir_name}"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", PROGRAM=="/lib/initcpio/udev/vol_id -t %N", RESULT=="vfat", RUN+="/bin/mount -t vfat -o rw,noauto,flush,quiet,nodev,nosuid,noexec,noatime,dmask=000,fmask=111 /dev/%k /media/%E{dir_name}", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o rw,noauto,sync,dirsync,noexec,nodev,noatime /dev/%k /media/%E{dir_name}", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /media/%E{dir_name}"
ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/rmdir /media/%E{dir_name}", OPTIONS="last_rule"
The problem is that the folder in /media, created in the 4th add action has uid and gid root. Therefore, as a normal user I cannot write! Any thoughts how to make it storage, or something like that?
Thanks in advance!

Did you run chgrp as root? It works when I do it on a mounted dir:
$ sudo chgrp users /media/usb_sdc1/
I can write to FAT flash drives even though the parent directory /media/$drivelabel is set to root:root.  Ext3/4 device folders are set to root:storage.  Both work.
Aye, I ran it as root.

Aye again, I am a member of the storage group!

After analysing your rules, I noticed that you have the users mounting options, which I curiously had already tried but appended to the end of all options unlike you.
I was coming to post my ugly work around, which included using the uid=$USER option. It's ok because it is a single user machine, but still.
Surprisingly, I tried your rules and it works fine!
Even more surprising, I tried again the rules from the udev wiki entry and guess what. It's working.
Something must've been wrong, I don't know what, but apparently it's fixed now. Oh well.
Thank you guys!

    pacman -Syu keeps asking me this:
    :: Replace devfsd with udev from "testing"? [Y/n] n
    but im already using udev. why?

    um, again please? you mean i should just say yes? but why is pacman -Syu insisting on installing udev from testing (i have testing enabled but not prioritized in pacman.conf). this arch install of mine started from 0.72 (gimmick) so it is using udev (from current) by default.

  • Dockingstation with udev and systemd

    Hello,
    first: sorry for my bad english... the last time i have practise my english was in school :-)
    now my problem:
    i try to setup a udev-rule for my thinkpad T61 when the latptop is (un)docked from the station.
    i try a lot of thinks... RUN+=" and such stuff -- but my script takes very long time (Setup Interface, WakeOnLAN, multiple cryptet mounts from my homeserver etc.) and killed by systemd after a while.
    related to this (jasonwryan.com -- Scripting with udev) and this (bbs.archlinux.org -- Automating a script for a usb device on systemd?) i create a udev-rule like this:

  • Rename group of interfaces with udev

    Hello!
    I was wandering how I could achieve the following with udev or with the help of some other tool:
       * Match an interface (used for wan) and rename it to WAN (DONE)
       * Match All the rest of the interfaces and rename them as LAN1, LAN2 ... LANn.
    The thing is that I want to be able to add an Ethernet card in the future and not have to worry about it's name.

  • Udev/hal rules won't automount my ipod

    After following directions in the wiki articles on hal and udev to get my ipod to automount and generate the /dev/ipod device, I'm at a loss because nothing seems to work as explained. (I'm running Arch64 with LXDE)
    I've added the following rule to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ipod.fdi:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <device>
    <match key="@block.storage_device:storage.model" string="iPod">
    <merge key="volume.policy.desired_mount_point" type="string">ipod</merge>
    <merge key="volume.policy.mount_option.iocharset=iso8859-15" type="bool">true</merge>
    <merge key="volume.policy.mount_option.sync" type="bool">true</merge>
    </match>
    </device>
    I've added the following rule to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-ipod.rules
    BUS=="usb", ATTRS{manufacturer}=="Apple*", ATTRS{model}=="iPod*", KERNEL=="sd?2", SYMLINK+="ipod", NAME="%k", GROUP="storage"
    When I plug in the ipod, Pcmanfm will show 'Apple Ipod Music Player' in the left column with the other drives. When I click on it, it will properly mount the ipod to /media/{name of ipod}. I would like it to mount every ipod at /media/ipod, and create a link /dev/ipod. I haven't put anything in the fstab yet, but in any case, the /dev/ipod link is not created. I know the udev rules work, because it will create the correct link for /dev/pilot when I plug in my Palm.
    Help! I'm trying hard to wrap my brain around this, and I don't understand why it's not creating the /dev/ipod link. I've restarted the computer and restarted hal and reloaded udev rules multiple times with no changes.
    Thanks!
    Scott

    Ahhh....thank you!  If I take out the 'last_rule' option it does indeed show up on pcmanfm. However, I think it's happening somewhere outside the parsing of the udev rules (perhaps HAL???) because even if I moved the local rules to the very last (99-local.rules) but kept in the 'last_rule' option, it would still not show up.
    Now, second problem is trying to distinguish between flash drive and ipod. I thought you could use a != on an attribute. The rules below still result in /dev/sdb2 on the ipod getting mounted twice .... once to /media/ipod and once to /media/usbhd-sdb2.

  • [Solved] Cannot detect camera with udev, only with HAL.

    I have removed HAL as I realize it is being deprecated and HAL also created issues with frequent 2-3 second HDD access. I have managed to get udev and pcmanfm to detect and mount pen drives using the udev wiki and new rules.
    However, my digital camera is not detected, nor even assigned a device name (unless I use HAL).
    Output from "tail -f /var/log/messages.log" after insertion of camera:
    Jul 31 15:49:02 eagle kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
    Note udev does NOT assign even a device name. The camera is also not detected via "lsusb". Therefore, without a device name I cannot use:
    # udevadm info -a -p $(udevadm info -q path -n [device name])
    to even begin writing udev rules.
    EDIT and PS: I have copied the /lib/gphoto ruleset file to /etc/udev/rules.d and restarted udev to no effect as well.
    EDIT(2): This problem is now "partly" solved. I can detect the camera using "gphoto2" command line, but only as root, so the problem appears to be a udev permission problem, which for some reason HAL did not have.
    EDIT(3): Added myself to "camera" group, copied permissions line to libgphoto rules in /etc/udev/rules.d as per camera wiki and problem solved.
    It seems that changing over to udev at the moment is not exactly straight forward. I still cannot get automounting of CDROM drive either - but will get there eventually. (I hope udev becomes more user friendly than HAL, because at the moment HAL wins on that front!).

  • NTFS automount with HAL using NTFS-3G

    I have just managed to automount NTFS external usb hard drives.
    I read this wiki page: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL but it didnt work for me.
    Since hal-0.5.9.1 and later the above instructions dont seem to work but if you put the 10-ntfs-policy.fdi to /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/ makes this work!
    I have done research about this for two days but nothing worked.
    Please someone edit the wiki

    Well, there are no symlinks for the 10-ntfs-policy.fdi anywhere on my system, there is just this one instance in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/.  Something else must be at work here...
    Edit: By the way - I use openbox with thunar-volman to do the mounting, in case that is relevant...

  • Automounting with HAL

    I would like my DVDs/CDs, floppy disks, and USB devices to be mounted when connected, and I know HAL is used to do this. I headed over to the Wiki, and saw this ominous line:
    NOTE: this is deprecated from hal => 0.5.10
    If it's depreciated, what's the correct new way to do it?

    I'm using Xmonad, I thought it'd be a bit obvious that I was looking for a config file to edit after reading my first post

  • Automount with iso9660 dvd problem

    Hi all!
    I have a problem with automount: I have two optical drives (an LG cdrw drive, detected and accessible from /dev/sr0, and a LG dvd+-rw, detected and accesible from /dev/sr1). I can mount and umount manually all kind of dvd/cd from each of them.
    The problem is with automount: CDROM on sr0 and sr1 device are correctly automounted (on KDE I get the usual popup when I insert one cd into the drive). I have problem only with DVD, and only with ISO9660 DVDs on sr1: UDF DVDs are well detected and mounted (after mount I can query filesystem by "mount -i" command). Iso9660 are not recognized: no popup, no messages in dmesg, no automount. I can mount them by hand, successfully.
    I tried to comment out lines in fstab regarding optical drives, with no results.
    I'm pretty sure that, in the past, all worked perfectly.

  • Usb drive automount with drive's Name

    I've read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udev#Udev_Tricks so now usb drives are automounted as /mnt/usbhd-sda1 (or something similar). But I want them to mount as /mnt/usb-drive-name
    where usb-drive-name is auto-detected (not preentered by hand).
    Unfortunetly I didn't find drive name in information provided by udevinfo.
    Is it possible to do that?
    Also I'm using KDE and want to set it up so that automounted drive would appear in system:/media. As far as I understand in order for that to happen I need a record in fstab but I have no idea what that should be.
    Thanks in advance.

    You have clearly not done very much research on this subject. Did you know that with hal and dbus daemons, kde will automount for you? And for that to happen, there should _not_ be an entry about that device in fstab, unless it is clearly specified as "noauto". You need also be a member of the correct groups to do this.
    After that, it's a easy as clicking the device in media:/ and renaming it...
    Please, read up on the wiki.

  • USB devices automounted with wrong permissions

    When I plug in my usb hardrive (in KDE) the volumes are automounted in /media/volume-name with root as owner and group - which means I'm not able to access the volumes.
    I'm using KDE 3.5.4-6, all my packages are up to date (hal/udev/dbus etc.).
    How can I get the volumes to be automounted so that I can access them (also, some of the volumes are fat so I'd like them to mount as umask=000).

    i've got the same problem after updating my system (pacman -Syu) two or three weeks ago.
    i decided to wait for an update of hal and dbus at first. today they both got an update - the problem still exists.
    before upgrading everything was fine. plugged in my usbstick/hdd and it was available in "media:/" for users
    now it's available too, but owner is always root.
    my user is added to the groups "storage, hal, dbus"
    dbus and hal are running and working.
    i don't know where to say kde to mount it as user or with umask=000

    From what I understand the hal .fdi files now are ignored since the last upgrade of Xorg to version 1.8. Before that, I used to modify .fdi files and then restarting hal to get the modifications to work. I did this to configure my joystick and synaptics for example.
    How I'm supposed to do that now with this new system? I've been trying with hal and the fdi files, but are totally ignored (as expected) and making changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-name-here.conf works but I have to restart X.
    According to this the configuration for input devices should be done by .conf files on xorg.conf.d/ or udev rules.
    The Xorg input hotplugging from the wiki is kind of outdated too because it's all about the deprecated hal so I don't understand how I'm supposed to configure and work with the hotplugging...
    I hope someone can make this a little bit clear :) (or tell me that I'm really lost)

    Not what I'm looking for really, because if I change the Xkblayout for example (or if I create a new file), the change only works after restarting X. My joystick for example, doesn't work and create a new inputclass only works after restarting it.
    I know that I can change the keyboard layout some other way while using it using setxkbmap, but still, I'd like to know how it is supposed to use the "hot" plug.

  • [Solved] Auto-open a file manager after mounting with udev rules

    Hellooooo,
    I followed the udev Wiki for auto mounting USBs and it now works great.
    The only problem is: how can I automatically open a file manager of the mounted directory? I tried putting this at the end of the "ACTION=="add"," section in "/etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules" but for some reason nothing happens:
    , RUN+="/usr/bin/dolphin /media/%E{dir_name}"
    Even if I just try to open dolphin with the "ACTION=="add"," section nothing happens either way.
    So what am I doing wrong?

    In that case, the best choice in my opinion is to use Automounting UDisks Wrappers :
    devmon is a script developed by IgnorantGuru. He left Arch Linux, but the package in AUR is still there and is the last version. For a future new release, it should be available at his blog site. The script is distro independent.
    My udisksvm script, in its default state, doesn't launch a file manager after automounting, but it is not a big thing to let the automounting be done and then manually open a file manager (a new entry in the traydevice right-click menu can also be added for that).
    If you can do without automounting, there is also the bashmount script from jnguyen.
    All these scripts don't require writing any udev rules, they use udisks instead.
    I hope you could find something you like and which will suit your wishes.
