Autoplay search box = my iPod's demise?

Question

My iPod worked fine for a long long time, until it began acting odd when I tried to update it. Due to an error during the process, my iPod has pretty much been incapacitated when it comes to any sort of updating or importing. Every time I connect it, I keep getting an autoplay window with a flashlight on it going back in forth, as if my computer was trying to locate something, but was unsuccessful. Now, when I attempt to update the window becomes unresponsive, and if I use the disk itself to try and format it, it gets to the point where the program tries to reboot my iPod but will not go past this point due to a "miscommunication" between the computer and my iPod and the installation will not be completed. Now, I've done everything from disabling antivirus's, completing the 5 R's, and even cleaning out my computer's temp files, trying to restore in disk moede, and disabling anything else that I think may be conflicting. Does anyone else have this problem that I am? Because this is extremely frustrating.

I don't see the iPod icon/folder anywhere in My Computer except for in the program files, and there, there is only a bin folder and an update folder, neither of which have any of those options. I see that your operating system is a Mac, so would that make any difference? I work with a Microsoft XP Prof.
