Autorun.inf

Hi everybody, this morning I switched on my Mac Mini and discovered a file called autorun.inf on the desktop. It looked a bit suspicious so I googled it and found entries mentioning that it's a virus. So I tried to eliminate it but it stays in the wastebasket and a message appears which says impossible to delete as the file is blocked. It says the bin can be emptied by pressing the the key Option while pressing ´empty wastebasket`. I can't find the Option key though. Do you think this file is dangerous? Should I continue with my quest to eliminate it? All help appreciated. Thanks Danny

The INF file is an information file used almost exclusively by Windows. In the case of autorun.inf, it's a file used primarily on CD ROMs to enable the autoplay of the disc, usually to automatically start a software installaction from CD. Mac OS X does not support autoplay of CDs, and could not execute a Windows portable executable file (.exe) anyway.

  • Can't rename a single file to autorun.inf even all ntfs permissions are correct

    I have this odd problem:
Logged in as Domin Administrator I couldn't  rename or open for editing an existing file "autorun.inf" even though all the ntfs permissions were correct. Every other files in the same directory (mainly .swf, .docx, .js and .htm files)
are both editable and can be renamed.
When I deleted the file "autorun.inf" from the folder and tried to create a new one with the same name, OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) notifies me that I "need permission to perform this action". Furthermore OS notifies me that "You
require special permission from Administrators to make changes to this file". Neither can I copy a file named "autorun.inf" from another location to this folder. This is in spite of being logged in as Domain Admin.
    In short: I can't create a file called autorun.inf in a folder!
Could  there be some kind of extra locking concerning files named autorun.inf i.e. some protective mechanism in this particular folder's permissions or SRV2008R2 itself that I've missed. All the other folders allow me to create whatever files i like
    into them.
I would very much appreciate if anybody can help me with this.

Yes, by default that will block any access to autorun.ini files. We use the same, so the issue sounded familiar, and of that I asked specificly to that :)

  • I can't open an autorun.inf file on my macbook, what should I do?

I have a problem because I want to open a CD that has autorun.inf documents on it. It is actually a CD that has drivers lisence tests on it and it is definitely not just written text. I read on the Internet that it can only be opened on Windows. Please tell me this is not true since this is the only computer I own. Thanks in advance

    Definitely Windows only  >  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autorun.inf
Mac OS X cannot read an .inf file.

  • Autorun.inf with iDVD project

Is it possible to insert an autorun.inf file in the root directory of an iDVD projet so that I can make the DVD open a particular file from the DVD-ROM folder when inserted on a Windows PC? If so, would this affect how the DVD would work on a regular set-top DVD player?
If not, is there some other way to get a particular DVD-ROM file to open when the DVD is inserted on a computer (Mac or Windows)?
    Intel iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    jecwobble,
This can't be done with iDVD, but there may be some options. I haven't done this, but here's where I'd start.
1st use "Save as DIsk Image" in iDVD. This will create a .img file with both your Video_TS and DVD-ROM folders. Copy all those folders to your hard drive, into one folder called "DOG" for example. Add the autorun.inf to the /DOG/DVD-ROM folder. You may have to change permissions first.
Then use DVD Imager (from versiontracker.com). Use "Disk Copy" mode, and then drag the VIDEO_TS folder from "DOG" onto the Disk Image window in DVD Imager. In Disk Copy mode, DVD Imager will "create a DVD from the dropped folder as well as everything in the folder containing the dropped folder."
Hopefully this will put the autorun.inf in the right place.......
Now before you get too excited, realize I said above I haven't done this !!! I have used DVD Imager to burn iDVDs with edited IFO files....

  • How do you setup software that has autorun.inf?

I have a D-Link 615 try to load the CD but nothing happens.  I click the autorun.inf tap and nothing happens, how can I load this software?

AutoRun does not exist in Mac OS X. It's a security risk.
how can I load this software?
You don't. This software is for Windows. I assume you are running Mac OS X . Mac OS X is a different operating system from Windows.
Read the device's installation guide to find out if installing any software for this device is required under Mac OS X. If it is, it should also tell you how to obtain it. If you don't have the installation guide, go to the manufacturer's support site and download it from there.
If you do need to install Windows software, you should be able to run Windows on your Mac using BootCamp or a virtual machine such as Parallels.

  • AUTORUN.INF repeatedly trying to run for no apparent reason

I got this Thinkpad X201s direct from Lenovo last November.
Since then, my Avira antivirus software has been blocking Q:\AUTORUN.INF several times a day.
Why would Q:\AUTORUN.INF be trying to run from the recovery partition during normal use of the computer?
Is it likely to have been hijacked by malware?
Curiously, Q:\AUTORUN.INF seems to go mad whenever any potential threat to it is running,
i.e. when Windows Defender is running or paticularly when AUTORUN.INF removal software is downloaded.
If I click on it in Windows Explorer, Avira blocks it but it does open as a Notepad document with an "Access is denied" warning and an empty Notepad window behind it.
Repeated Avira system scans and Windows Defender scans find nothing abnormal.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello,
Perhaps it is a false positive alarm.  Have you tried uploading the AUTORUN.INF file to a site which runs files against multiple anti-malware scanning engines like VirusTotal to see what is reported back?  That should help give you an idea of whether the file is infected. You can also submit it your anti-virus vendor's researchers for examination.

  • Autorun.inf problems

I have a Flash exe on CD and have an autorun.inf file that
starts it when the CD is inserted, but sometimes (on some
    computers) it doesn't work.
Does anyone know what would cause it not to work?
    And how to fix it?

    That's correct.
Most of us disable this options as one of the very first
settings on new windows set up.
Especially when running "goodies" or tutorials off the
software installation CD's , the autorun will
always prompt the installation wizard and the cancellation
can be annoying and time wasting.
Disabling the autorun is very common and you can't overwrite
it or force it to work if the user
set it OFF on his computer.

  • [Help Needed] - How to Delete autorun.inf?

In one of my folders, there is this particular file which I cannot delete called "autorun.inf". I have read in some of the forums mentioning that it is a virus. Most of the solutions are meant for PC.
However, I can't find any solution to delete this from my Macbook Pro.
For your info - the sharing and permission for this file is for both "Read & Write" but yet I cannot delete it.
    Please help... thanks..

    It's not a virus.
I have it in with some Windows Parallels stuff.
If you must delete it (not recommended) try selecting it then pressing command delete.
    Your admin password is needed.

  • Locked autorun.inf?

Sometimes I lend my flash drive to Windows users and it comes back guess what: infected. Most flash drive virus put some .exe file in there, along with an autorun.inf, but I can't seem to move this one to trash, Finder says it's "locked". What's that all about? It's pretty anoying not being able to delete a file in my own flash drive, specially if it's a Windows virus.

An autorun.inf file is not necessarily a virus. There are various ways for handling locked files that you will find at The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash related problems.

  • Cannot delete locked .INF file from desktop

    Okay,
I go to a school where everyone can place everything into one server.
Someone put an autorun.inf virus in all the folders, including mine.
I ended up having the virus on my flashdrive, but wasn't able to delete it through a PC.
A friend said that fellow classmates have been able to delete it through Macs, so I gave it a shot. (This virus doesn't affect Macs, by the way.)
I was able to remove it from my flashdrive, but I cannot remove it from my desktop.
    It's just sitting there, locked.
    I can't find a way to unlock it, I've tried control+click, right click+delete...
Is there a way to remove it?

Another way that usually works. Depress the Option key when you empty Trash.

  • Opening a PDF document on a CD with Autorun

    Hi,
I can open my PDF document using a simple autorun.inf command as follows:
    [autorun]
    shellexecute=D:\documentname.pdf
But, the path only works on my computer. If I insert the CD into another computer and the drive name is different it obviously does not work. I have tried using a relative path like this:
    [autorun]
    OPEN=\documentname.pdf
But that did not seem to work.
    Question:
Is there a character limit to the length of the PDF file name I'm trying to open? Or, is my attempt to create a relative path name wrong?
I want to send the CD to someone and have it open automatically to the PDF (there are about a dozen other PDF documents on the CD that the main one links to). So, I want to make it easy for them to go right to the main one.
    Thanks,

  • Autorun on Macs from CD-Rom and Hybrid question

    Hello all,
I just got comissioned to design and develop a small
flash-based CD-Rom project. The client is interested in having the
CD-Rom presentation auto start/run when placed in the cd-rom drive.
I know how to do this for a pc, but how would I accomplish this for
    a mac?
    1) Is it possible to do? I thought I read somewhere that Max
OS X disabled autorun for CD's.
    2) Are there differences (if it can be done) between PowerPC
    Macs and Intel-based Macs?
    3) If I publish a swf file (and burn) it from a PowerPC base
mac running OS X will it work on an Intel based one?
Thanks in advance for any help and/or direction.
    - Mr. Moo

It's been a while since we did a cross-platform autorun (it
was right about the time that OsX first released).
If I remember correctly we used NorthCode's SWF Studio for
the PC side, and a seperate Flash Projector for the Mac side.
We had to write a small piece of applescript to perform
essentially the same function that the autorun.inf file on Windows
    handles.
The autorun function was dependant on the user having
    Quicktime and recent carbonlib installed.
We used a product called MacImage to build hybrid mac/iso
cd-images that could then be burned from Windows PC.
Sorry I can't give any more up-to-date specifics, but maybe
some of that will be mildly helpful.

  • Autorun for CDs run on both Mac and MS operating systems?

    Hello,
I have built a website that runs from CD-ROM. In the root directory of the site it contains three extra files which enable the disc, when it is inserted into the CD drive, to fire up the web browser (on my computer this is Internet Explorer 6), open the HTML home page of the CD website, and change the CD drive's icon to an icon of my choice. To do this, I use a self-executable file called "runner". All of this works OK on any Microsoft Windows platform, but not on any Mac OS.
    The three files are:
    autorun.inf
    runner.exe
    An icon file (say, "myicon.ico")
(The icon file isn't compulsory - it can be left out if not required.)
The "autorun.inf" file can be opened in Notepad, and the text contents changed and saved to account for the name of the HTML web page that needs to be opened first in the web browser (in this case, "index.htm"). The text in "autorun.inf" therefore looks like this, containing three lines of text:
    [autorun]
    open=runner index.htm
    icon=myicon.ico
"Index.htm", in the above case, is in the same directory as "runner.exe" (i.e. the root directory of the CD drive).
Is there anything I can do, perhaps with the addition of some sort of Mac-compliant file, so that the CD will self-start in the way described above, regardless of whether it is run in Windows or a Mac OS?
    Thanks,
    RMS-link

You can't get a CD to autorun on a Mac in the same way you can on a PC.
What you can do is to get the CD to automatically open a disc window. So that users can then just double click and open the index file.
You can modify the auto window size and look quite easily as well.
In order to do this you will need however to create a hybrid disk, Toast can do this quite easily.

  • Newbie - Standalone.exe Wont' Autorun

I exported my project as a standalone.exe and checked the
options to generate autorun for cd and the full screen. After
burning the CD, I've put the CD in drive and nothing happens. If I
try to click on the cd rom drive, it asks me what program should
    Windows use to open it.
Here is the content of the autorun.inf file:
    [autorun]
    open=file.exe
    icon=file.exe,0
I have tried burning this on more than one machine where
    autorun works with other CD's.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Hi,
Can DVD autorun when you inset this DVD  on other computers?
If it can autorun,I think it is related to your computer setting.
    Please check the following steps:
    Open Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>AutoPlay,
Check"Use AutoPlay for all media and devices"
If it doesn't work, please check your GroupPolicy:
