Autosave temporary file security--Where do they go once a doc is formally saved?

Hello!
I recently replaced my failed PowerMac G5 with a new iMac, and upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard in the process.
File security is very important to me. I noticed that Snow Leopard will automatically save a temporary file until the original file is formally saved.  As a rule, I am careful to secure erase all of my, and my client's, personal documents once they are no longer needed. I am concerned that there are duplicate copies of these files floating around my hard drive, unencrypted, or erased but not secure erased.
Can someone educate me about where those tempory files go after the original is saved?  I take considerable strides to make sure I know what information is stored on my computer, and I am a little put off by the seemingly lack of control.
Thannks!
p.s.  I will be jumping to Lion soon, so any info on how this works with Lion also wouldn't hurt.

The temporary files are erased. You're overthinking the issue. As for Lion, there might be other issues associated with autosaving: salient details described in http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4753, and https://discussions.apple.com/message/15877452#15877452

  • File objects: where do they go?

    I am writing a program that can be used on multiple platforms. I found that when I use File.createNewFile(), it places the file in my IDE directory, which is totally separate from my java bin. Or if I try to do a
    File liscence = new File("copying.txt");and try to read it, it does not find the file copying.txt in the subfolder of my bin. Normally, I fix this problem by using a JFileChooser. However, now I have to read the liscence file into a JDialog, and I am the one defining the file, not the user. So how do I get the File to be in the directory where the class is? Note: I cannot fix this by doing
    new File("C:\j2sdk1.4.2\bin\SubFolder");because the people I am deploying to might be using a different jdk/jre, and even worse, a different operating system. For example, on linux it would have to be
    new File("/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/SubFolder");Thank you in advance!
    Edward Rice

    I assume this licence text file exists; move it to the
    same directory where your .class files reside of pack
    it in the same jar before you deploy your application.
    The following gets you an InputStream to that file --
    public class LicenceDisplayer ... {
    // name of the resource
    private static final String FILENAME=
    E= "copying.txt";
    // input stream to the resourse
    private InputStream is;
    // locate the resource
    public LicenceDisplayer() {
    is=
    is= this.getClass().getResourceAsStream(FILENAME);
    // display the licence
    public void display() {
    // use member 'is' to display the licence stuff
    }kind regards,
    JosThank you.. this is what I was trying to do - find copying.txt in the same directory as the class file of the app. I should have been much more clear about exactly where I was trying to look for the file. To explain the confusion, I develop in my bin (learned bad habit from my first java class :-( ). I decided that the user of the program should also put the jar file in the bin of their computer, but I made it seem that I was looking for a way of finding where the bin was. The user could put the jar file anywhere. I should have just said that I was trying to find out how to locate a file that was in the same directory as the class file.
    Thank you all,
    Edward Rice

  • I cannot find my saved text edit documents after interrupting file vault, where did they go?

    Was file vault able to back up even though it was interrupted? Where does it go? Can I restore my computer to where it was before I tried using filevault? I think I have backed up my computer with iCloud previously.

    Is FileVault on or off?
    Do you have any backups besides what is being backed up to iCloud?

  • HOW TO ACCESS pdf files? where did they go?

  • Temporary files in Freehand

    Does Freehand create temporary files and where can they be
    found?

    You usually never get to see them unless FH crashes and
    corrupts the
    document. Under FH8 the temp files where stored in the same
    location as
    the document you're working on - that might have changed in
    later
    versions.

  • Automator temporary files - Where?

    Hello!
    As the "Create Archive..." from the contextual menu creates a zip file on the same place as the original files, I made an Automator workflow to create the compressed file on an external HD.
    After two hours of processing (130GB of files to compress into a zip), this workflow aborted with an error (I don't know which...).
    Now I have +3GB less on Macintosh HD due to Automator temporary files.
    Where can I find and delete them?
    Many thanks!
    Pedro
    p.s. - Original files (131GB) on an external USB HD, Zip file was configured to go to a FW external HD. This process created a temp file on Macintosh HD, because I saw free space getting smaller. The workflow crashed when after two hours it started writing the zip file to the FW HD.

    Hi Pedro
    It is probably in the hidden system folder
    Macintosh HD > private > tmp
    I use the Utility "MainMenu" to show the invisibles http://www.santasw.com/
    look under Finder options
    I would be inclined to save to Desktop then copy it to the FW drive

  • How to delete temporary file created by disk utility

    I recently ran the DISK UTILITY to erase free space. During the "CREATING TEMPORARY FILE" phase the process was interrupted. I had 250GB of free space now I have none. When ERASE FREE SPACE is run, what is the name of the temporary file and where is it located so I may manually delete it? The HARD DISK UTILITY shows I have zero free space

    Restart the computer and empty the Trash, or delete any file. Click here for more information.

  • Where are temporary files created for "image capture"?

    Hi all
    I have been using image capture with no problem whatsoever, until recently. I was scanning a big file and while it was saving it or something I closed the lid of the computer and interrupted the scan. Now the scanner can do a preview but is no longer able to "scan" the file that i see perfectly through preview. I think that the problem is that there is a corrupt temporary file somewhere that needs to be manually deleted. If you know where such files are stored or if you have a better idea, please let me know.

    You may be on to the correct solution. I've seen this problem with a big printing job that a user had to cancel and then had to "go in" and delete the print job before they could print again. On the Mac, there is something called CUPS (something Unix Printing System) and it has a role in printing and I believe faxing. It "might" play a role in scanning through Image Capture but I'm not sure. Anyway give it a look and see if there is an incomplete scan job in there that you can delete.
    Note: this looks like a website URL but it leads to CUPS on your Mac.
    http://127.0.0.1:631/jobs/
    This may not be applicable to scanners but it's worth a look.

    Steve M.

  • How do you CHANGE the location (away from Drive C) where Firefox stores temporary files?

    I know where Firefox stores temporary files. I want to CHANGE this location away from Drive C to decrease writes to an SSD. Thank you.

    Thank you.
    This function may be one of the few things that IE does better than Firefox. IE lets you change the temporary file location in Tools - Internet options - Settings. Firefox developers should make this task easier and put the instructions in the Help file where they can be easily found.
    Since I use an SSD for Drive C, I have learned that any file(s) that are frequently written to should be moved elsewhere to a conventional HDD.

  • Where does the CS5 Automatic Update put temporary files?

    I am getting the same error that I see other people have had.  When I try to download and install CS5 updates using the automatic updater, I am told that the download failed and that I should try again later.  My guess is that one of the files was damaged in the download, and that it chokes each time it tries to open it.  I suspect that the "fix" is to delete all of the downloaded and temporary files and to start over, but I don't know where they are.  Anybody know?  Thanks.

    The file I downloaded was downloaded with the following filename cf10_mdt_updt.zip.  I then ran an extract all and saved the extracted files to a folder called cf10_mdt_updt.  I then copied the folder with the extracted files to the following folder c:\ColdFusion10\jre\bin.  I then ran Command Prompt as Administrator and got the error message shown below.

    i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
    "MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
    IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
    Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
    Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
    Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
    Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
    Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
    The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
    The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
    Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

    When I try to import .olm files from my external hard drive back up, where do they go? It says on different forums they go to the "on my computer" folder but they are not there.
    I go through all the instructions but then my emails do not appear. I'm starting to panic a bit!

    You might want to try asking on the MS Office Outlook forum - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoutlook - since those are Outlook files.
    Also note which method you're using to create a backup.

  • After updating to iOS 8 all of my files in Pages are gone!!!! Where are they? And how do I get them back?

    After updating my iPad to iOS 8 all my files in Pages and Numbers are gone!!! Where are they and how do I get them back?

    If you didn't configure Windows Phone backup option or use VZW Backup Assistant then all is lost.
    If you did go with Windows Phone native backup and you use an Outlook account you should find your photos and videos on OneDrive.  I'm not sure how much VZW Backup Assistant backs up but you would need to start a restore from that software and see what's preserved.
    With any OS installs/updates a backup is always best to first.

    Looking for answers on XMP files - where should they be stored as sidecar files?  With the original raw file or in a separate folder?
    Relatively new user of Adobe LR5 and PS CC, about a year old.
    If they should be stored somewhere beside the folder that contains the originals, where and how to change the settings?
    If I choose to write metadata to the original files, is that sidecar files or does the XMP file show separately?
    To be honest, I usually find a video and I cannot figure this out.  I have never received an answer on any of my questions by the way.

    Hi there,
    You answered a prior question from me so I wanted to reach out to you about this.   I just need a step by step on how, if possible, to View LRCC on my MacBookPro when the main interface is on my iMac
