Autosave/Versions Issue - 'This file has been changed by another application'

In Keynote and Numbers, I often informed that 'The document xxx could not be saved. The file has been changed by another application.' Clicking 'Revert' simply results in 'xxx could not be reverted.' (The particular box below is actually from TextEdit)
This snapshot is from the informative link: http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/lions-versions-feature/
In the above-mentioned site, the author attributes this to 'changing hosts' and working on documents from different hosts. Indeed, I started the document at home and edited it at another location (where I connected to a different Wi-Fi network). Reading system.log from console, I see my host is actually my wireless network, rather than xxx's-MacBook Pro, as usual. Some examples of the errors (from system.log) are...

I assume that the link is correct in that setting a new hostname is causing the problem. Unfortunately, I still have no idea how to fix it and I'm uneasy about the reliability of versions/autosave and/or my Time Machine backups.
Any advice, comments, or suggestions that you might have would be appreciated!

Hi Tony,
That's been reported here before, and it's happened to me. Maybe not exactly those words, but something similar, at least. I've always ignored the warning and have had no ill effects to date, that I am aware of. Nor have I ever figured out what the message may have been caused by.

I keep getting a warning stating that the document could not be auto saved in pages. The file has been changed by another application. Then it says click save any way to keep your changes and save the changes made by the other application as a version, or click revert to keep the changes from the other application and save your changes to a version.
What in the heck does all that mean, and why are they trying to behave like a Windows product or a Microsoft office product. I just don't get it.
Why is another application changing my documents? It's like they've created a virus within their own programs. It's a pain in the neck and makes no sense.

I am also having the issue of a warning saying "could not be auto-saved in Pages. The file has been changed in another application. I then hit "save anyway", the warning will go away for a time, sometimes minutes, sometimes hourr, but then the warming reapprears saying the same thing. This is not the case with all Pages documents but it is the case with many.

  • Cannot save ... The file has been changed by another application.

    Hi,
This is to report a wierd behavior when pages is auto saving documents.
An error pops up  "Cannot save ... The file has been changed by another application."
Clicking "save anyways" seems to save the document OK, but still this is very anoying.
Saving the document manually (from the menu) isn't showing any error message.
Can someone help with a hint as of when this will be fixed or is there a workaround?
    Thank you in advance,
    Best Regards,
    Michel.
    Pages version 5.0.1 (1478) on OS X 10.9

The phrase "by another application" makes it pretty clear that it is not Pages (or, in your case, Keynote).
What seems to be happening is that between the time that Pages opens a document, or saves it and the next time that it attempts to save it, something updates the document's file on the hard drive. Pages, recognizing that the file contains changes for which it is not responsible, presents this alert so you can decide whether you want to overwrite those changes. The usual suspects are backup and synchronization applications, like iCloud, which may not recognize the "Open" flag on the file, but I think it can also be triggered by AppleScripts, Automator workflows and Services, if they perform a "Save" action on the file.

  • The metadata for this photo has been changed by another application.

getting this message on random photos....in different folders

If file not changed outside Lightroom, just save metadata (from catalog to disk) to extinguish. - prolly a bug..
If Lr still unhappy, then read metadata (from disk to catalog) afterward.
Of course, make sure everything is backed up before doing such stuff.

  • A newer version of this page has been detected, The new version will be loaded

Ok, So I uploaded the files with editable reigions and all worked great then the client made some minor changes.
Then the client wanted other changes that needed to be made to the file, So I download the latest file off the server, edited it then re uploaded it.
Then very page that I uploaded that I go to edit keeps getting this message "A newer version of this page has been detected, The new version will be loaded" - It then re-loads the page, but when I hit edit again, The same message appears . . . . '
To make it work. I have had to Duplicate the page, Rename it to index2.html then delete the original index.html and make the duplicate index.html and then it works fine  . . . .
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

  • Here's a fix for "This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process"

    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/System-Center-Service-fca7af29
A few months ago on the Technet Gallery, I submitted this custom control to be used on SCSM console forms. The purpose of the control is to eliminate the "This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process" error
message that we all have seen at least once (a day :) ).
The details are in the gallery description (along with installation instructions for existing forms and your own custom forms).
Here's a "short" description (nothing I ever post here is short :) ): This is a custom control that can be applied to an SCSM form like the Service Request form or Windows Computer form or your own custom form built with the authoring tool or Visual
Studio. When you click "OK" or "Apply" on the form, this control scans the form and Service Manager's database for any changes to the object you have open. If a property that _you_ have changed on the form was _also_ changed in the CMDB
(by a workflow or another user), this control will present a dialog box letting you know what happened. It will also let you choose which value to keep (yours, theirs, or the original value).
Just as importantly (and important in a greater percentage of cases), if a workflow changes a "background" property (like FirstAssignedDate) while you have the form open and you click OK, the control will detect the change and allow the form submission
to go through while keeping your changes and the FirstAssignedDate change that the workflow made. You won't get an error message or even a warning. And most importantly, you won't lose your changes.
That's where the "optimistic" part of the control's name comes from. It applies optimistic concurrency control to SCSM forms, while also providing an anti-collision interface for you to use so you no longer lose any of your changes.
Furthermore, this control will work on related items that are opened in memory; for example, the activities on a Service Request. So if you change an activity's title while the workflow engine sets it in progress, you won't get an error. The activity will
be in progress and will get your new title when you click OK or Apply.
Lastly, (and I admit this part is getting into the deep inner workings of console forms) if your form loads a sub projection at run time (to the root object) this control will detect the load and treat that sub projection as if it were apart of the original
    form all along.
I've gotten a little feedback about this control, but I'd like to get more since it's a work in progress. So, I'm announcing it here on the forums. Please give it a try and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them here. Thanks,
    folks!
Oh, and to answer the most common question right away: It's free. There is no paid version or anything like that. This is something I built for the SCSM community.

    Great job!
    Will definitely try it out.
    Best regards,
    Marcus

  • How to fix: "Not Authorized: Sorry, this file has been previously opened in another machine"?

I recently downloaded an online coursepack for grad school, and it is a password protected document that opens in Adobe Reader version 11 or higher. I updated my Adobe Reader to the proper version, typed in the appropriate password, unchecked "Enable global object security policy" in Edit ->Preferences->JavaScript, and was able to access the file initially. Then a week later I must have updated my Adobe Reader and I could no longer access the file. The error kept popping up, "Not Authorized: Sorry, this file has been previously opened in another machine."
I never opened the file on any other machine and even when I tried re-dowloading the coursepack the error did not go away.
How can I access my coursepack file? I have finals coming up and I need access to my coursepack!

EJP wrote:'Confirm that the file has been downloaded successfully from the servlet'.Well, actually should have been How can I let the servlet know that a client has downloaded the content in the servlet's output stream successfully? Anyway I corrected the title to be more concise. Any idea how this can be done?

When using tethered capture I often get this notification "The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application". This slows or stalls the loading of incoming photos. How do I find out which other application is changing the metadata and stop it?

    Thanks Sean,
I've had a look at the TC settings dialog and tried to keep it as simple as possible. I also had a copy of LR 4 on the hard drive so have trashed that also incase of any conflicts. LR seems to be running ok now but as said it's an intermittent problem.
I also have a copy of Capture One on the hard drive so am going to uninstall that also in case it is trying to launch.

  • Message regarding Metadata for this photo has been changed

We recently transferred from PC to Mac. We now get, over each image, an icon that when you hover over it the message says,  "The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?" What should our action be please?

Normally, that message indicates that another program has changed the photo's metadata on disk after it was imported into the LR catalog.  But sometimes LR generates that message spuriously, i.e. it's a false alarm.  In this case, I think it is likely a false alarm, and you should choose Overwrite Settings.  However, before you do so, make sure you have a good backup of your catalog, just in case.  See Lightroom Help | Back up a catalog for how to make a manual backup of your catalog when LR exits.

A Fix for "Your network preferences have been changed by another application" Error
In the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder delete the following:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
You will have to re-configure all your network settings since deleting.

  • Word 2007 - Save as Pdf gives error - This file is in use by another application or user

I have MS Office 2007 Small Business.
For months I have been using the "Save as PDF/XPS" option to save my word documents as PDF files.
All of a sudden, when I click on the publish button within the "save as PDF dialog", I get the error:
"This file is in use by another application or user."
    - I have tried creating a new word document and I still get this error when I try to save-as pdf.
    - I have tried opening a document that previously was able to be saved-as-a-pdf, and it no longer works either.
    - I have tried saving from other office applications (excel, powerpoint) that also get errors now.
I have not personally installed any new software that I recall between when this worked and stopped working for me.
As far as I can tell there have been no updates explicitly for save-as-pdf in office.
Is anyone else seeing this problem all-of-a-sudden?
    Thanks.
    jlk

I just encountered this problem while trying to save a pdf from Excel 2007.  I had recently updated to Adobe Reader 9.1.
I received the same error message you're reporting here when I went to Word 2007 and tried to save a pdf file from it as well.
    I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1.
Reinstalled the Office 2007 pdf plug-in
Successfully created pdf files from word and from Excel (which is what I needed to do in the first place).
I then reinstalled Adobe Reader 9.1 so I could read the PDF files I had just created in Excel and word.
I then tried to create pdf files from word and excel.  Error messages are back and I'm unable to create pdf's from word or excel.
So.. why does Office 2007 pdf plugin not work when Adobe Reader 9.1 is installed?
Frankly I'm getting tired of uninstalling Adobe Reader 9.1 every time I need to create a pdf file in Word or Excel.

  • The latest issue of Pages for iPad: 1. Very slow. 2. Late in reacting to typing. 3. When I go to a specific file, informs me that some images were deleted and therefore file has been changed. Then when OPEN option used, opens file slowly. Please, help!

What I have to do to correct the following problems with Pages app. For iPad:
    Hesitates to display results of typing, some times for 5-6 characters;
    Very slow in opening files;
Before opening of a specific file displays message: DOCUMENT DETAILS. SOME CHANGES WERE MADE TO YOUR DOCUMENT. SOME IMAGES ARE MISSING BECAUSE THEY WERE DELETED FROM YOUR DOCUMENT. We'll, nothing is missing. But it takes forever to open this file. The previous issue of Pages worked very good. But they would not let me to go back to it. Please, help!

Tmobile did the exact same thing to me. So that is customer service at work in general. Nice try though lol.
    To the OP
I see you said You paid for shipping, did you Insure it? Claim insurance on it. If you did not, It may not be Verizon or your fault in the sense of the phone not making it to the warehouse. There are people out in the postal world that will steal phones that are not insured. It could have been a Verizon employee, i suppose.
But, if this was to be a bought in court, if you shipped it with out insurance, sadly your at fault.
Do you still have the Serial number of your old phone? If so, you should be able to track where your phone is (if it is reported as a defect/damaged) If so, you may be able to use that as proof. If it does not show up as a defect or what ever they determine use as a loss, then you know it did not make it to the warehouse to be checked in. I would suspect Apple or Verizon could tell you what the Serial number came up as.

  • The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application...

Often, I am not sure how to answer that one. Usually, I'm not aware of having made any changes explicitly, either in Lightroom, or externally when I get this prompt. Generally what I'm dieing to know when I see this is:
"What is the difference between the metadata Lightroom has for it, and the metadata on disk?"
A feature that could show me what the difference is between the on-disk metadata and the in-catalog metadata would be most appreciated.
    Rob

Sometimes I know I haven't changed anything in the external file. In this case, the supposed conflict seems to be a bug and I overwrite with Lightroom metadata without exception (but with fingers crossed) - that bug has been reported.
Other times however, I have edited the file in an external editor, and its possible that the external editor wants to add some information that may be worth having, or it may be that its lost the original information - this is when its a dilemma:
If I overwrite disk file with Lightroom metadata, I may be losing what the external editor added.
If I overwrite Lightroom metadata with disk data, I may be losing what Lightroom had and the external editor dropped.
This scenario has not been reported as a bug, since I don't know if it is one. If I could see the difference between the two, then I'd know.

  • Seeing "File has been changed outside of RoboHelp... discard changes?"

I'm using: RoboHelp HTML, Version 10.0.1.292
I'm seeing the following message when I make changes within the RoboHelp project and then choose to close my project without saving the changes. It's not consistent behavior - it happens for some help files in the project but not all help files. If I save changes then it doesn't appear.
    My steps:
1 - Open RoboHelp (I'm using RoboHelp 10) and make a simple text change to a help topic.
    2 - Choose File > Close Project.
3 - Click No when the "Save changes to the following files?" confirmation appears.
This is when I see the message above. The message is confusing for several reasons: 1) I didn't edit the file outside the project, 2) I'm not sure what changes are being discarded if I click Yes, and 3) what's being loaded when I am closing the project.
Full disclosure - The only file I ever edit outside the project is the CSS and I am guilty of editing the CSS with the project open (to instantly see the results of my changes). Could this be the cause even though I haven't touched the CSS in well over a year? Is there old crud stuck in memory for certain help topics? I've never seen this message before and I've worked on this help project for many years.
Further testing - This message is popping up for a help topic added recently so I can't think it's related to any CSS changes made before the file was added. No other files have been edited outside the project that I can think of.
Message was edited by: Tricia Trujillo

Maybe with a copy of the project, try deleting the CPD file and then seeing if the offending topic still shows in Project Manager.
Go with Jeff's answer first though.

Thanks Aram, I agree that it looks like a full deployment, however I'm sure I'm not deploying anything. I also filtered the files by date to look for anything that might be changing without my knowledge but came up dry.
I'm in the process of setting this up on a VM where I've got full IIS access with the hope of getting more information.
