Avahi-daemon doesn't start, no "ck_daemon"

Hello. Two weeks ago or so I realized during boot that Avahi daemon fails to start. Now I've debugged it and it seems like it's start sequence attempts to use "ck_daemon" command, which is not available. How can I obtain this executable or substitute it?

What are the contents of 'cat /etc/rc.d/functions' and 'cat /etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon'? (Use [ code ] blocks)
'ck_daemon' is a function defined within '/etc/rc.d/functions' which should be sourced as part of the daemon script.

  • Gnome-settings-daemon sometimes doesn't start

Hey guys. I have an occasional problem where the gnome-settings-daemon doesn't start on login. If I log out and then back in it usually starts. Or, I can run it by hand and everything works fine. It's not a big deal, but it's a little annoying. Has anybody run into this or does anybody know of a log file or something I can check to see why it doesn't come up?
    Thanks

I had this problem, and I have a very fresh arch install; no old homedir, and gnome was installed at version 2.24.1 (current).
However the problem seems to have gone away once I cleared out the files in my $HOME/.config/autostart/
That directory had some .desktop files, including gnome-settings-daemon-helper.desktop (but not gnome-settings-daemon.desktop!).
Actually I find it weird that gnome-settings-daemon.desktop resides (on my system) in /etc/xdg/autostart, whereas gnome-settings-daemon-helper.desktop is in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/.
I'm not sure what the significance of any of this is, or if my entire experience (rm ~/.config/autostart/*) even makes sense. But see if it works for you
Edit: Nevermind, I still have this problem happen sporadically; the above solved nothing, it seems
Any ideas how we can debug this? How can I trace exactly what gnome-session is doing?

  • Catch-22 in start/stop order for avahi-daemon and avahi-dnsconfd

I have to start avahi-daemon before avahi-dnsconfd or avahi-dnsconfd will fail.  But I have to stop avahi-dnsconfd before I stop avahi-daemon or avahi-dnsconfd says FAIL when rc.shutdown tries to stop it.  I can solve the start order problem by putting avahi-daemon first in DAEMONS, but rc.shutdown stops them in the same order, causing FAIL messages for both services.  I don't think this is causing any problems on my system, but I don't like seeing FAIL messages during shutdown, at a time I can't do anything to see investigate what happened.  Any ideasZ

  • [SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.
    /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.

    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>

    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
    # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive

The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.

  • DBUS doesn't start - Could not get UID and GID for username

    Hi.
Today i installed Archlinux in other of my systems, but i have a problem. I installed the last dbus (dbus 1.4.16-1) and i putted it in my rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @network crond dbus alsa)
    but it doesn't start.
    The error is:
Thu Apr 5 23:03:36 2012: :: Starting D-BUS system messagebus [BUSY] Failed to start message bus: Could not get UID and GID for username "dbus"
    Thu Apr 5 23:03:36 2012: [FAIL]
So, i don't know what happen. In my other systems, i don't have any problem, only with this fresh install.
Googling i found this solution from Chakra's wiki:
Could not get UID and GID
If you get the following error while starting DBUS:
Failed to start message bus: Could not get UID and GID for username "dbus"
then add the user like so:
    # groupadd -g 81 dbus
    # useradd -c 'System message bus' -u 81 -g dbus -d '/' -s /bin/false dbus
If i do this, can i funk my system?
    Edit:
That solution works well. I don't kown if in the future maybe i'll have some problem.
Should i mark this post like "Solved"? Still i don't know what was the real problem.

useradd and groupadd owned by shadow (4.1.5-4), it wasn't installed before dbus-core and avahi needed them though. not sure how install environment works, does it rely on installed version or installer versions?

I checked using mysql_safe & it seems to be a permission issue
    $ mysqld_safe --user=mysql

so anyone tell me what permissions I have gotten wrong & how can I get mysql to work again?

    1. You have to start mysqld as root using either sudo or from your root account
    2. The safest way to start mysql is using the unit file (systemd) or service file (rc.d) -- e.g. 'sudo systemctl mysqld start'
    3. My /var/lib/mysql directory has the following permissions 700 and owner/group is mysql/mysql. With those permissions, you're not going to be able to view the contents of the directory unless you are root or that user.

  • Xchat-gnome doesn't start

    Hi,
I've just made a clean install and for some reason xchat-gnome doesn't start. The window doesn't even show only the notification that the program has crashed. I've tried to compile the package localy but that didn't help.
I realize this isn't much info to work with but what info would be useful and how do I gather it?
I would be really glad if someone could help me figure this one out.

    DeepThoughts wrote:
Could it have something to with what repos we are using?
I'm using current, extra, community, testing and unstable.
nuopus, NeoEx and baze, what repos are you using?
i use those 5 aswell. the only thing from unstable is gimp-devel. from testing i use
    alsa-lib
    alsa-utils
    ipw3945
    kernel26
    klibc-udev
    openssl
    udev
and then i use self-built avahi, libburn, nss-mdns and squeeze-svn. not really any packages which i think could cause this stuff to work here.
i use the hosteurope mirrors, maybe some packages are broken on your server, though i don't expect that.

Teamviewer doesn't start after resume from hibernation, what can I do to make it work?
I issued command "teamviewer --daemon start" but no success.

That's probably BIOS bug, have a ask MSI here: http://ocss.msi.com.tw/ They can send you a new BIOS to try.
I supposed that this issue is caused by BIOS bug, and this speculation was confirmed. MSI Support has sent to me link with BIOS version 132, which solves the problem
Under this link you can find this BIOS: http://rapidshare.com/files/127845890/a7395ims.132.zip.html

    i'm using OpenBox and tint2
i want tranmission auto start when i boot into arch so i add 'tranmission-gtk --minimized' into autostart file but when i restart my machine transmission doesn't start to tray
is this bug? or i do something wrong? how can i solve this problem:(

if i use transmission-cli.will it continue download my file from tranmission-gtk?
If you start tranmission-daemon like this:
    transmission-daemon -g /home/<your_username>/.config/transmission
it will inherit your current settings, including any current downloads.
EDIT: It seems the bug you're encountering has been fixed for version 2.5 ([extra] version is 2.42).

  • Xfce doesn't start, gnome too

    hi there,
i'm new here and I'm also new on archlinux
I've recently bougth an Athlon 64 3000+ and I want to use a 64bit distro to run calculus programs as Octave (never used calculus programs under linux, but I presume that they are faster than other appz on win/linux 32bit)
I've installed base system through CD, and with Pacman I downloaded nvidia drivers and configured X11 by XF86Config file, i think that there are no errors here.
I read italian/english tutorials for install xfce4-svn, and with pacman I do all... but when I type startx... It seems to start but few second later:
/opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: no such file or directory
    /opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: Success!
waiting for X server to shut down FreefontPath: FPE "usr/share/fonts/misc"
refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing
    root@liquid /: #
    if I type xfce4-session:
/opt/xfce4/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc: line 49: /opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: No such file or directory
so I downloaded gnome and gnome-extra, added some daemons as tutorial, but when I type gnome-session:
gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libcairo2.so.2: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
here there are problems with 64bit?
    where I do wrong?
    thanks in advance

I've installed clamav and tried to start it through the rc.d script but it doesn't start.
It seems to be down to the line:
    if [ "$START_CLAMD" == "yes" ]; then
returning false. If I comment that line out it starts ok,
Starting clamav just from the command line (just running clamd) also works.
Has anyone else had this problem?

    /etc/conf.d/clamav, not /etc/clamav/clamd.conf.
Files in conf.d are configuration files for /etc/rc.d daemon scripts.
