Available memory decreases over time

Hello,
I noticed that under ICS, the available memory decreases over time. After about 10-15 days of use without reboot, the available memory goes from approx 150Mb to 70Mb. It is not my applications that are taking the RAM but it rather seems that it is the OS itself that is using it.
Under the Settings>apps>running> the first portion of the memory (OS I presume) keeps taking more space. Then after 10-15 days, the phone slows down and becomes jerky. After a reboot, everything goes back to normal.
I can't remember if it was the same under GB. Anyone experiencing this?

Thanks for you replies guys. This isn't so great to have to reboot every so often. There must be a memory leak somewhere.
Invar, even if I close an app, there is still a bunch of memory that's taken by the OS that doesn't get released. It's ok that apps take RAM so that they load faster when I need them, but when the OS takes up all the RAM, then the apps have little RAM to play with and it becomes laggy.
I definitely won't be rebooting every day. I like my phone to just work and forget about it. In my case, I can probably wait about 10 days until it starts becoming laggy again.
Yea, I do miss phones of yesterday where they just worked (I'm thinking dumb phones, BB). Android is cool, we just need the bugs to be fixed. I hope 4.0.4 fixes that.

  • TotalMemory Decreases Over Time

We have a Java application running on the Sun 1.5.0_09 JVM on a Solaris 8 server. When we started the application, we set the heap size settings as follows: -Xms256m -Xmx256m. With these settings we have typically found that a call to Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory() will return a constant value over time, because we essentially set the maximum and minimum heap size values to the same size. However, we have a couple of systems where the value returned by Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory() is decreasing over time. Can anyone explain how the total heap size can decrease when it has been set to a constant value? Note that we didn't have this problem on 1.4.2. We have only seen it on 1.5.0.

could be because of memory leaks or incorrect settings of jvm parameters like heap size, survivor ratio resulting in infrequent GCs. How much time does it take to loose significant amounf of memory ? have you looked at heap graph ? Typically application server admin consoles show heap graphs ..

  • CD Ripping speed decreased over time?

I sat down to rip about 15 CD's last night... initially they were ripping in iTunes at about 20x with the DVR-109. as i got to the last ones the ripping slowed down alot, to about 4-9x, and the drive wasn't spinning as fast or loud as it had before.
any ideas on why this happened?

The exact same thing has been happening to me. I have ripped about 10 CDs already at speeds of up to 25 or 30x. Now my CDs are ripping at speeds of 4 to 7x. What the heck is going on? I have a PowerMac G5 with Dual 2.0 GHz processors. This should NOT be a problem for this computer!

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • UCCX8 Is there a log or report that shows IVR/CTI port availability over time

    Question:
Is there a log or report that shows IVR/CTI port availability over time?
    Objective:
We are trying to determine if, when doing a Call Redirect step, the IVR/CTI port stays the same or the port is made available by the first script and the second script, where the Call Redirect is redirecting to, has to reserve its own IVR/CTI port.
    What we have done already:
We limited the Call Control Group to 1 CTI port and ran the scripts that do the Call Redirect step and it worked fine, so we are assuming that there is not a point where the transfer takes up two IVR/CTI ports at the same time.

    Hi,
if it's UCCE, then if I remember that correctly, there is a webview report that would tell you Network Trunk Group utilization. Or, actually, you can extract this information yourself from the HDS table named Trunk_Group_Half_Hour.

This might be due to this bug raised for JDBC Client/Server connection
    Bug 12969330 : MEMORY LEAK IN JDBC CS FOR CALLABLE/PREP STATEMENT W/ NUMPARM % 4 != 0
There is a leak in JDBC driver which seems to affect only C/S; it does not seem to affect direct or batch. ** This bug has been there since 11.2.1.6.0.
Here are few conditions which are needed for this bug to occur:
    1. Application must be using a Client/server connection
    2. Applications repeatedly does the following:
    1. Create a PreparedStatement or CallableStatement
    2. set or register IN, OUT or IN OUT parameters
    3. Number of parameters is not an integral multiple of 4. It is the total number of parameters which matter; parameter type does not matter. JDBC driver leaks memory if the number of parameters in a PreparedStatement/CallableStatement are not an integral multiple of 4.
    3. On a close 1-3 parameters can be leaked.
If your application deals with above scenario then there is a possible chance of the bug being hit. An example of a scenario :-
The below PreparedStatement has 1 parameter (so it's not an integral multiple of 4):
    preparedStatement = connection.prepareStatement("SELECT col1 FROM Tab1 WHERE col2 = ? "); <===== Possible memory leak here
    To workaround the bug, you can add 3 dummy parameters -- SELECT col1 FROM Tab1WHERE col2 = ? and 1=? and 1=? and 1=? and set parameters 2,3 and 4 to 1.
    preparedStatement = connection.prepareStatement("SELECT col1 FROM Tab1WHERE col2 = ? and 1=? and 1=? and 1=? ");
I've seen this bug a couple of times now. I don't think there is a release yet which includes a fix.

  • Increase and decrease a numerical text layer over time

I need to create a text layer with a numerical value that will range from 0% to 100% over time using key frames. I need the value to change over time, increasing or decreasing the percentage based on key frames. Any ideas? Thank you!

Add a Slider Control effect to the text layer, which you use to keyframe the percentage, then use this expression on the text layer's Source Text property:
    effect("Slider Control")("Slider").value.toFixed(0) + "%";
The value in toFixed(0) controls the number of decimal places.

  • (1) Firefox chews up memory - 1 GB+ over time (closing tabs doesn't help); (2) every 30 sec. or so it freezes briefly.

    2.5 GB memory, 2.8 GHz P4.
Using FF 3.6.16. Last 2 minor upgrades happened auto. , without my permission (another irritant).
I routinely clear the cache (all options checked off), and this has little to no effect on either #1 or #2. Whenever I restart FF, it takes less than 24 hours to get back to memory-hog state. Regardless of number of tabs - I've tested that too, even just a couple of tabs over time will see memory swallowed up.

The battery alone is a $5 to $15 part.  Hard drives vary in cost, and depending on the iMac, they may or may not be able to install a third party hard drive, or one resold through Apple.    The resold through Apple drives tend to cost more.  This article discusses the varying successes of third party drives on iMacs:
    http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The labor costs depend on the store as well as the time to get the parts in stock.    Call around.

  • Memory pool Code Cache increasing over time

    Hi,
We are using JConsole to monitor some of our servers which are running JCAPS. We have a couple of JCAPS applications deployed on these servers. We are using JConsole to monitor this server and we can see that the Memory pool Code Cache seems to be increasing over time. It is around 21M at the moment and has gone up from 18M 3 days back. Is this accepted behavior? Should it not be a varying graph, going down coming back up again?
Any help in this direction is much appreciated.
    Cheers,

as i go to web sites, i can see the available memory in finder decreasing by almost 100mb when i go to different web sites. do i have a trojan horse. plus the internet seems slower since i let some bozos download a ufc fight they wanted to watch

I see from your signature that you have Norton Anti-virus. Get rid of it.
Norton Antivirus has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)
Also, you need to to update to OS 10.4.11.
And of course clean out your caches!

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?

  • Skype using High levels of RAM over time

So recently i've noticed that Skype has been using increased levels of RAM over time.  Before i think 7.1 it sat at a steady 170k or lower but since the recent update, it seems to scale all the way up to nearly using 80% of my RAM after being on for an hour. Is there a reason this happens or is it a memory leak issue?

    Hi,
I'm having the same issue as you.
For my situation, with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, with 8 GB of RAM  available, Skype use randomly from 400 Mb to 1.5 Gb of Ram slowing down all the PC..
I have to kill the Skype process for working well.
    My SKYPE version is 7.3.0.101.
I need to resolve this problem (and, from my point of view, uninstall the newest version and install the older one is not a solution)
    Thanks in advance
    Andrea

  • Start up disk - no available memory

    2 year old MacBook Pro i5 17" 4GB RAM 500GB disk
Background...  I'm a reasonably good Windows techie, this is my first MAcBook, so I'm really not up to speed on some of the Unix lingo, but I'm a fast learner and want to learn more about how this beast works!
Anyway ...  I recently had a disk crash, replaced the HD at the Apple Store here in London, and then reloaded my files back from a Carbonite backup. Then feeling brame I upgraded to Lion and have been sorting out application upgrades all week.  What a process....
Anyway, at pretty regular intervals, the machine will grind to a halt, the spinning beach ball of death will appear and a pop up window will open that says:
Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory.
The window lists all the open apps and gives me the opportunity to shut them down. At this point on Activity monitor I see almost zero free memory available, but plenty of CPU available. A few times I saw a process called SafariDAVclient using nearly 2GB of memory(!) I would kill it and it would reappear. it seems gone for good now, but Safari itself seems to eat up memory  up to 2GB. My VM size seems huge to me (180GB) as well.
The message itself makes no sense to me because there is 320GB free on the HD.
Can anyone tell me in technical terms what the message means, and how I might change my configuration to prevent it from happening?
Also, what's up with Safari? Does it always use 2GB or memort? Seems insame for a browser.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hi,
I don't have Lion installed, but some constant do exist among recent versions of OS X. Starting with your "huge" VM: in OS X, the system will consider all (or next to all) free space on your startup disk as available for swapping, as opposed to Windows, where VM is usually capped.
Safari caches a lot, one of the reasons it's so fast at rendering Web pages. Its using up to 2Gb of RAM on a machine that offers 4Gb total, and up to 180Gb in VM, is not unheard of, nor is it abnormal. It would probably use more if you had more RAM available, as the memory addressing cap at 2Gb for any given application in a 32-bit OS doesn't apply to Lion, which is 64-bit exclusive.
SafariDAVclient is a service that will let you sync bookmarks and browsing history over the Cloud with your MobileMe or Me.com account(s). See here for more info. It's probably the reason why your machine freezes after a while.

  • IPad available memory NOT consistent with available memory shown in iTunes and available memory reduced after a connected sync...doesn't make sense.

I was looking through my pictures on iPhoto on my iPad 2 and noticed in some of my albums there were duplicate pictures, but on iPhoto on my iMac there wasn't. I had also noticed that my 64GB iPad 2 had only a little over 14GB left for available memory. I decided to connect my iPad2 to my iMac and sync it with itunes but this time I unchecked Sync Photos. I was asked to remove photos which I agreed to. My intnet was to re-install my photos in hopes that I would no longer see the duplicate photos and quite possibly free up some memory. In short, none of that worked and instead the pictures remained on my iPad2 and my available memory jumped to 956MB. I then tried selecting a " Selected Events, Faces, Albums..." in the Photo section of iTunes but I did not select any albums or events or faces. The sync ended and I still had all of the pictures on my iPad2 with 7GB left of available memory showing on my iPad2 but now showing 12GB on my iTunes on the iMac.
I then tried to do a sync again, syncing all photos and the sync cancelled. I tried it again and it went through. This sync ended with 14GB of available memory showing on iTunes on my iMac, BUT on my iPad2 it showed 7.1GB.
None of this makes any sense. I guess I could have left it alone and viewed duplicate photos but if duplicate photos were causing available memory to be reduced, I wanted the memory to come back up for future use.
Also, I noticed that the amount of photos being synced has randomly changed on a couple of these occassions as if I had more or less photos to sync and I haven't. I'm not sure what would cause this either.
Where it says "Other" in the memory bar in ITunes on my iMac is 26.34 GB. Before I did the first sync it was a little over 7GB. What would cause the "Other" to consume so much memory? and what is "Other" Why did it fluctuate so drastically when I've made no changes to my iPad?
I hope I can get some help to this.
    Thanks!

"Other" can be the cause of this storage capacity snafu that you have going on with your iPad. "Other" is pretty much what it sounds like it should be with regard to what is stored on your iPad. It is "stuff" associated with apps but not the apps themselves or any other media. It consists of Safari Bookmarks and history, Notes, text messages, email messages, contacts, photos associated with contacts and items of that nature. It should not be anywhere near 26 GB and the fact that you have much is a little bit of a problem.
Sometimes the only way to rid your device of that bloated "other" is by restoring as a new device without using the backup. There could be something corrupt on your iPad and if you restore from a corrupted backup, you will just end up back where you started. Also, sometimes this issue is caused by syncing photos and while I don't know this for a fact, it might have something to do with the metadata associated with the photos that gets corrupted and then that might cause this "other" storage problem.
Take a look at some of these and see if something in one of them helps.

  • How to decrease loading time for 0Mat_Plant

    Hi Experts,
I am currently looking to decrease loading time of 0Mat_Plant. I have gone thru performance material available and checked following things listed below :
    Plz note following:
    1) Standard delta is avail but it has been enhanced and there are Z fields. So if i use delta, them I might be missing delta for Field.
2)Can we switch OFF number range SID buffering to avoid memory allocation on daily basis ...somehow through ABAP program?
    3) BUffering can be switched OFF, but there is delta load also alonwith full load. So performance would decrease for delta records. But no of records for Full load is 188000 and for delta is just 1700 around. SO will this helps in decreasing overall time? Any idea?
Load is taking around 90 minutes in my system (Full Load)..
I m not clear abt data package size and if it will help me or not..
    What more can we do??
Any help would be appreciated and points would be assigned......
    Thanks in advance
    Gaurav

    Job finished
I want to confrm my understanding abt extraction process when infopackage gets triggerred...
Infopackge gets triggered....->R/3 job gets created/triggered....-> Info iDoc regarding request sent to BW..-> Application document(??)) posted..(( posted to what???....  passed to Trfc??....and then to psa which is seen in monitor??))...
Like wise after successfull passing of datapackage to BW ( not posting to pSA) , next datapackage is sent..... and so on...
What is TRfc??  .as far I know its function modules created to pass data to bW thru RFC call...(??)...
IF you can give me clear picture of whts happening behind the scenes, it would be great.. or helpful links would do....it would be help me to enjoy wht you ae saying and how to tune more...
THanks for your patience and help...
    Already assigned points to you..
PS: I hve turned OFF buffering for master data records greater than 100, 000 and saved approx 25% for each master data records....
