Available()-not a reliable method
Hi,
I have a programme in which i am using the available() method to read the no. of bytes available, if the bytes read are > 0 than furhter processing is done, if bytes read are < 0 throw error.It is seen that eventhough my client submit job with EOF the available() fails to pick it in my programme(scenario seen 1:10 ratio).
It is said in few articles that available() is not a safe method to rely on while reading data from input stream.If so what is the alternative to available()?
It is safe, but it is not always implemented (e.g. in SSLSockets), and where is it specified to return -1 at end of file? I've never seen this.
available() is also pretty well useless. It tells you how many bytes if any can currently be read without blocking at the time you called available(). Obviously this can change between calling available() and calling read().
All the discussions of available() in this forum and elsewhere that I have ever seen end by concluding that you should just call read() and be done with it.
read() knows about how many bytes are available too, it is specified to know about EOF, and if you don't want to block indefinitely you can always set a read timeout. OTOH if you have something else to do between reads it is usually best to use a separate reading thread.

Is there a reliable method for detecting that a query is too large?
I am writing some code (that uses OCI) to properly detect when a query string is too long for OCI and/or the Oracle database server. I can't find any specific error code information in the docs, so I just started firing off large queries to see what would happen.
The queries I am sending are >2MB in size, up to 16MB. If the queries are above ~10MB, I get the error "ORA-03113 'End-of-file on communications channel'" after a fairly short amount of time (i.e. not enough for a timeout to expire). If the queries are below ~10MB, but above ~2.5MB, it either just sits there and does not do anything (for more than 15 hours). So watching for ORA-03113 when executing large queries does not seem like a very reliable method for detecting the queries that are too large.
Does anyone know of a reliable way of detecting that a query is too large for the OCI client and/or the Oracle database server?
I am using version 10.2.0.1 for both the OCI client and the Oracle database server, but I'm getting similar errors for combinations of 10.2.0.1 and 9.2.0.7 for both the OCI client and the Oracle database server.
These large queries need to be handled properly (i.e. distinguished from some generic failure) because the server handles requests from users, which could be programs that generate SQL queries (and have constructed huge ones in the past).
Thanks for any information!The ORA-03113 means that the Oracle server process has died trying to satisfy your request. In almost all cases it is strictly correct to call that a bug, and we shouldn't easily forgive the server process when it happens. But in the case of multimegabyte statements my anger and disapointment turns to sympathy, for in my heart I can't bring myself to blame it. Can you?

Simple and reliable method to preform an OCR on a pdf? [SOLVED]
I have Acrobat at work which does a wonderful job preforming an OCR (optical character recognition) on scanned pdf files so that one can do keyword searching within the pdf. I have spent the past hour following-up various guides on the 'net at large which do not work for me. Can someone recommend a simple and reliable method to accomplish this?
Last edited by graysky (2014-03-30 13:50:34)I can second OCRFeeder. It can use different OCR engines, and the application doesn't hide the complexity of the options that these engines accept, so with a little fine tuning you should get reasonable results. For Latin text, that is. For non-Latin or mixed scripts, all FOSS engines are essentially useless (I've tried long and hard to get Japanese OCR to work).
To be honest, I myself only use Acrobat now because it's the only thing that produces consistently excellent results. For example, text selection will often not work smoothly because the FOSS tools don't group the text objects properly into lines or paragraphs. -
Re: Error: $host does not have a method 'messageBox'
Hello Experts:
I'm experiencing strange behavior on my LC Designer ES application.
I recieve a warning and my console window (ctrl+j) doesn't show up nor does the message box.
I cannot see xfa.layout members on the object drop-down menu. I have re-installed to no avail.
This occurs on every all forms. The default script is set to JavaScript.
Can anyone explain this behavior. Is it an installation issue?
Thank you for your time, iL.

XP SP3, Office 2k7Hi Steve:
Thanks for your prompt responses. I appreicate that. I got the latest version.
I'm OT on at home looking for more answers...I'm guessing it's an installation issue...
I even tried console.println("Message"); CTRL + J and blank. I did this on Acrobat and LC.
I'm gonna do a full unistnall and reinstall when I get back to office.
The software is coming from our IS dept so I know it's squeaky clean.
I did an Installer Repair but the problem has returned.
I also can't use/access any xfa.layout memebers....
I get this errors even on newly created forms...it hasn't crashed again so I can't get any bucket ID log yet.
Here's whats on my office box that giving me grief:

Oh, I see that the title of your post is an error message? Ok. Well, the test class is declared as implementing an ActionListener. That means the test class must have an actionPerformed() method. Your test class apparently does not.
It does not appear that the test class needs to implement ActionListener. You are using annonymous classes as listeners. -

what would be causing this error?
CheersSorry, just figured out my silly error, the method is tableChanged not TableChanged.

I think you forgot to include the skippedEntity method, it seems to be missing. Even if an implemented class has a method that you are not using, you still have to include the method in your code even if it doesn't do anything.

Why am I getting the above compile error when I am very clearly overriding abstract method compare (ditto abstract method compareTo)? Here is my code -- which was presented 1.5 code and I'm trying to retrofit to 1.4 -- followed by the complete compile time error. 2 errorsAccording to the book I'm reading, if you merely take
out the generic from the code, it should compile and
run in v1.4 (assuming, of course, that the class
exists in 1.4). I don't know what book you are reading but that's certainly incorrect or incomplete at least. I've manually retrofitted code to 1.4, and you'll be inserting casts as well as replacing type references with Object (or the erased type, to be more precise).
These interfaces do exist in 1.4, and
without the generics.Exactly. Which means compareTo takes an Object, and you should change your overriding method accordingly.
But this raises a new question: how does my 1.4
compiler know anything about generics? It doesn't and it can't. As the compiler is telling you, those interfaces expect Object. Think about it, you want to implement one interface which declares a method argument type of Object, in several classes, each with a different type. Obviously all of those are not valid overrides. -

My iphone 5 has been saying this for days now. Yes I have recently purchased a motorola ear piece for easy talking while walking, but i have also used a 10ft cord purchased at walmart for months now and no display before the motorola. now even without anything plugged in ,I still get the display message on my phone saying" the cord or accessory is not capitable with this iphone and may not be reliable with this iphone.
what DO I do ?! is there something I can do without going to either Sprint or Apple for help.... will this be damaging to my iphone ?! HELP before its too late.
sincerely,
Apple lover JAJATry resetting your iPhone. Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
CAUTION - This may get rid of the warning for now, but the issue the warning points out still remains. One or both of your cables is certainly suspect. -
since I upgraded to the new operating system my charger no longer works...
It says"this cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone"Try checking your cable socket/lightning cable for dirt, grime, pocket lint, etc. I could not find the solution to this issue myself and after much searching I found someone stating that cleaning this out helped them immensely.
After taking a wooden toothpick (making sure the phone was OFF first) and gently clearing out the edges and inside of the lightning socket this went away.) It is worth noting that I had a significant amount of dust or lint buildup along the edge rails which I think was causing the iphone to believe it was plugged into something when it was not.
Try it and see, ensure you are very careful and do not use any conductive tools to clean the area in question. Compressed air also does wonders here. -
Just Upgraded my IPOD 5 to iOS 7.0.2 and it will not charge the battery anymore.
When I plug it in, it now gives the message "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this IPOD".
Anyone else have this issue after they upgraded the iOS system?

Flash Builder 4.6 code hinter problem - not showing some methods
Hi All,
I have a problem with FB code hinter. It does not show some methods on an object.
To be exact I created a Date object and FB code hinter does not show .toDateString method (actually I it shows only one to string method - .ToString(), although according to docs there are more)
When I use .toDateString method, code still compiles and work just fine, however method is not showing up in code hinter, which is really annoying..
Anyone had this problem? If so, please, share some wisdom how to solve this thing.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE:
Here is some more info in my problem.
I have tried to reinstall the application, but it did not help.
So what I did was:
* first I installed FB standard edition version 4.
* I checked the code hinter and it worked. It showed .toDateString method.
* I have purchased FB standard 4.5 upgrade.
* I installed this upgrade, and boom the code hinter does not show the method...
* Next I tried to create a project with Flex 4.1 sdk and then it worked - method was there. So the problem is with 4.6 sdk apparently...sucks...Hi, I have the same problem. I have a new FB 4.6 installation and it is my first FB installation. Do you have a solution already?

My ipjone keeps coming up with a message say that the cable or accessory urged in is not a reliable source for this iPhone but I do not have Nything plugged in to my iPhone. I Put it in a bowl of rice for 2 hours to see if that would help it but it hasn't. Is there anything thank can do???
Clean the connector on the bottom of the phone. Use a magnifying glass, bright light, and a wood or plastic toothpick. If you got the phone wet put it in a bag of uncooked rice for several days, not hours.

I have created a remote service base component as a AModelService.cfc file. I extend that file to make my ModelService.cfc. When I configure the ColdFusion data service and point to ModelService.cfc and click next, I don't see any remote methods (there are none explicitly defined in the component) in the Service Operations window.
If I go back and point to AModelServide.cfc, the parent component, and hit next, I see all the remote methods that are defined in the parent component. So, either I am doing something wrong, or Data Services does not look at methods up the cfc prototype chain, which from an OOP standpoint means that instead of say creating one restful base class and being nice and DRY you can't. I.e. not OOP for data services. Is this a bug, or what?
Anybody get data services to work with extended service components?
MarkThanks for the reply. Yes, I did compile all the Java and it
works OK with a simple Java program. It just will not work in a
Flex application.
The java classes are:
RRA:
package blah.myPackage;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Collection;
import flex.data.DataSyncException;
import flex.data.assemblers.AbstractAssembler;
class RRA extends AbstractAssembler
public Collection fill( List fillParameters )
RRS service = new RRS();
return service.getSome();
RRS:
package blah.myPackage;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
import java.sql.*;
import flex.EORS.*;
class RRS
public List getSome()
ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
String str = "bob";
RR rr = new RR(str);
list.add(rr);
return list;
RR:
package blah.myPackage;
class RR
private String name;
public RR() { }
public RR(String name)
this.name = name;
public String getName()
return this.name;
public void setName(String name)
this.name = name;
I started with something that retrieved data from a database
but watered it down just to try and get some kind of communication
between Flex and Java.
