Hi, my husband says the other day the computer would not go any further and it said something like "security breach" "you must call this number before going any further" and it said to call this company, who then "fixed" our computer for $200. This company "logged in" to our computer and told my husband that our computer was hacked and using our wifi and invading our privacy. My husband said that they are affiliated with apple and that he was "patched over" to an apple representative as well. I want to make sure this is legit, not fraudulent activity that occurred or a scam?
The day before this happened, I went to my local apple store because my computer just shut off when I disconnected a device that was attached via USB cable. They had to reset it and said not to plug the same device in because for some reason it took all the power out of our laptop.
I just found it coincidental that I had just had my laptop looked at by an apple tech and fixed, and the next day something like this happened?

I was just about to say changing the password to you account online to get it done sooner. But if the crooks have the ability to monitor what you're doing on you Mac, that wouldn't help at all as they would see every change you make. For now, you can't do anything online that could give away login information for anything you would normally do via the Internet.
Mind you, this mostly depends on whether or not they had you install anything. If not, the possibility of this is much lower. Though one thing you should check is the System Preferences. They may have turned on Sharing so they can watch any activity you do on your Mac. Open the System Preferences and click on the Sharing icon. If any check boxes are on, turn them off.
If anything, they would have turned Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Remote Login and Remote Management on. Turning them off will kill their ability to watch your activities. That still won't stop a keylogger, a back door, or other remote access software they may have had you install.
I don't know how much an Apple technician would do for you for free, but you could certainly bring it in and have them look it over for you. Most likely, they will do what I suggested above to make sure nothing is left on the drive by wiping it clean and reinstalling the OS from scratch.
Make sure you have a backup of the drive before you it in. Generally, the store technicians will not do this for you. They will simply reset the Mac to a factory state and all of your personal data will be gone. Once you get it back, you would then have to reinstall your third party software from the original disks, or downloaded purchases. Then lastly, manually restore your personal data only. Do not do an automated restore from a Time Machine backup as this could put unwanted software back on the drive.

    when i clicked on this link (being bold) my Norton protection blocked it saying it was a fradulent website. is this correct or is my antivirus just being too picky? nobody even knows my password and why the heck is this the only so called warning when i cant even contact apple like a normal person to ask them what is up without paying a buttload extra bunch of money for one dang question. just not sure if its legit or not.

  • Found a dead spider in my charging port (iphone 4) this morning. Now phone wont charge at all... What can I do? It's now all totally cleared of lint and legs :/

    This morning my phone wouldnt charge, I tried three different charging cables. They are lighting up to show they are working, but the phone does not charge or show a symbol or connect to the computer.
    So i cleaned out the lint from inside the charging port. and inside all the chargers, some of them were new off the shelf so would not be the problem.
    I found a dead spider inside the port. Have blown into it, thoroughly cleaned with a needle any debris and fluff and spider legs etc...
    It still wont charge. I have ten percent battery... it's off for now. It is not covered for a chat with apple at all, unless i pay $40 which is crazy expensive.
    Any ideas of what to do to save this phone? Obviously i cant back it up because it wont plug in to anything.
    For now it is not on charge, just trying to let it dry out.
    Probably i squashed this spider when plugging it in. therefore there could be spider guts all ruining the inside? I don't know how the ports are made. Up until not charging
    there were no issues at all.

  • I used to be able to get onto a site, but two days ago I no longer can. I have talked with the site Admin and he says the site is viewing me as non-legit.

    I used to frequent an RPing site until two days ago on Sunday, January 26th, 2014. After speaking with the Site admin I was told that the site no longer recognized me as a "legit person". I have gone through all the normal steps, updating, uninstall and re-install Firefox, delete cookies and history, removed proxy for connection (and all the other proxy options) and even restarting the computer. I have tried accessing the site on other browsers, IE and Chrome and it works just fine! I even have other friends who can still use the site on Firefox! I do not know how to fix the problem, and I hate Chrome/IE with a passion, so I am praying there is some way to fix this problem and let me use Firefox again for the site. As for the error I get whenever I try to get to the site it reads. "The requested URL "(Site Address)" cannot be found or is not available. Please check the spelling or try again later."

    The link to the 'applefanblogs' page is real and opens a Facebook fan page with VERY little info there. There is a link to the actual Apple web site. The link to the 'applefanblogs' page where previous giveaway winners are supposed to be posted DOES have several photos (active links) that show people holding up regular iPads they've supposedly won. I didn't click on any of the photos since I'm not sure where they'll lead (probably only inlarges photos but better safe than sorry).
    If anyone can confirm if this is true please let me know. And if you have a suggestion as to a better place to ask this question let me know that also since I couldn't find one.

    Can any one clear me on this: "I am assuming that during creation of leg in inbound shipment, the destination tab in the cust/unload pt field should be given as the Sold to party address, which in turns picks up the ship to party address(if any different) to ship the delivery associated to that particular Sold to party".
    Please correct me if im wrong.

  • Are there any legit DVD authoring programs for Mavericks?

    Seems like Apple is just done with optical media... which is probably about a decade early.
    In any case, does anyone have a legit (as in I won't be beta testing software for 3 days) / simple program for authorizing DVDs.

    I was unaware until yesterday that FCPX could burn a basic DVD.  We will give this a try.
    None of us are pros... so we're just creating archives of things we import into iMovie presently.   But we just invested in a new Mac Pro, so it's definitely time to look at FCPX and figure out how we can leverage its capabilities... We need a workflow that is simple and can be followed off of a ilst of instructions.  ... Thus, we've defaulted to iMovie.  I'll have to spend some time on Lynda and get it figured out.
    I was sure that when I brought in iDVD onto the new Mac Pro it would work, but something is failing someplace, between the new Mac Pro, Mavericks, iDVD, the LG Blu-ray burner, and our standard DVDs.
    Anyway, I appreciate your suggestions and your time.

    Well, that was a lesson in itself. I now know about inverted crop and I can see if  I had an easier graphic it would work faster. It took quite a while because I kept getting warnings about not selecting  any pixels. Finally I pushed through it and got to a screen where with brushes, marked the selections that I wanted and those that I didn't. In the end I got my graphic without any white showing through. I accidently erased the main outline in a few places but decided I'd stop for the time being. In the end, I accomplished the look I want but my goodness, shouldn't there be a simpler and faster way. I didn't think I was asking for anything out of the ordinary. Thank you so much for your ideas, lesson and helpful response. I appreciate it !   Genie

    Generally, that means the phone has been jailbroken (hacked). You can try restoring it as new using iTunes. Beyond that, there's really nothing we can advise as jailbroken phones can't be supported on these forums.

  • Trying to go legit, but it's not working

    I've just recently purchased Final Cut Studio 3. It wasn't directly from Apple, but a third-party retailer: www.cheapestlegalsoftware.com. It seemed (and still seems) legit (or so I hope). I've installed the Studio and all programs run fine except for Motion. Every time I try to open Motion, it prompts for my name and serial number again, and then says the serial isn't valid. I've tried deleting the SystemID from the ProApps folder, and Final Cut will open again, accept the serial and work fine. However, it's always the same thing with Motion.
    I have had Final Cut Studio installed before, the previous time from a borrowed copy from a friend, which I know isn't Kosher, but with this I've been trying to to go with a legitimate copy of the program.
    Why would the serial be valid for all of the programs except Motion?

    Motion is newer software and may have a more up to date list of banned serials?
