Avast 2015

Looks like avast! has just released avast! 2015 .   They are continuing to use the year for the "version" number (rather than calling it "avast 10" [although internally, it's 10.0.2206]).
I have NOT yet tested this product... we'll see when I get around to it.   Even though this is an "official" release [i.e., no longer in beta], I would suggest people wait a few weeks, until this new product is fully tested (unless you're intentionally "playing with it" on a non-essential "test box", just to see what happens).
Here is the list of major changes/improvements (copied/pasted from https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=157515.0 )
• HTTPS scanning
Ability to detect and decrypt TLS/SSL protected traffic in the Web-content filtering component. This feature will protect you against viruses coming through HTTPs traffic as well as adding compatibility for SPDY+HTTPS/ HTTP 2.0 traffic. You can tune/disable this feature in the settings section.
• AVAST NG (Next Generation technology)
A hardware based virtualization solution capable of running each Windows process in standalone safe virtualized environment (VM) and fully integrated to your desktop. Each process is executed in its own instance of VM, which means totally isolated from your other applications. This feature is now powering the Avast DeepScreen, resulting in better detection. Avast NG requires HaredWare virtualization enabled.
• SecureDNS (this feature is active in the paid versions only)
A new provider which guards against unprotected DNS/DNS hijack on a router/client (including unsecured networks, public ones, etc.).
• Home Network Security
Scan your home network for vulnerabilities (wifi status, connected devices, router settings, factory passwords, etc.). It helps to discover potential problems not isolated on the particular device only, but in the entire network of devices you use or connect to the Internet from.
• Smart Scan
Integrated all on demand scans into one (Antivirus, Software updates, Home Network, GrimeFighter). One scan, different results and recommendations.
• GrimeFighter Free
GrimeFighter will offer free cleaning of junk files and tuning of system settings. These tasks are performed by our Zilch and Torque minions. Other minion functions remain as paid-for features.
• New Support System
Easy contact for paid users to submit a ticket with all info included automatically. Improved knowledge base for free users. Help is completely online and is more up to date.
• General bugfixing
This covers a lot of stability & performance changes in all components (but the main focus was traditionally on the network & engine components).
It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved). Or you can use in-product updater.
But to play it absolutely safe, you should BACKUP your existing settings before installing the new version, so that you'll be able to IMPORT them if needed/desired.

I've finally decided to give avast 2015 a chance, on my secondary (WinXP) system.
First, I backed-up all my customized settings by opening the Avast User Interface / Settings / General / Settings Backup / Back up settings.
I downloaded Avast 2015 build 2208 from MajorGeeks... I felt more comfortable using their download, than going through Avast itself... which redirects you to CNet [which has a bad reputation for "questionable" installers including extra PUPs] :-(
I then went offline, to run the installer... I didn't want to be online, as I'm not sure how protected I'd be during the installation process.
I made sure to DE-select the two Google/Chrome pre-checked options, and go for a CUSTOM installation.
I DE-selected Secure Line (which, to the best of my understanding, is a PAID service), and Grime Fighter (which I believe is just a bunch of garbage I don't want on my system).   Since this was an XP system, Avast recognized that:  it automatically removed mention/choice of the Avast "Gadget", as well as NG, the "Next-Generation" which requires hardware virtualization that's not part of my ancient XP system.   I  allowed the new Home Network Security... I'm curious to see what, if anything, that will find.
I noted the EULA, and continued with the installation.   An Avast icon appeared on my desktop... and a reboot was required to complete Avast's installation.
I opened avast's User Interface, to RESTORE the customized settings I had previously backed-up.   (I did NOT take time to investigate... it's possible they might have been properly transferred/imported... I just didn't want to risk things).   I rebooted the system to make sure these would be fully acknowledged.
Looking at the tabs on the left, the STATUS tab (from 2014) has been renamed as OVERVIEW (in 2015).   Several other tabs/functions on the left --- as well as under SETTINGS --- were renamed/combined.
Observation:   The Overview screen contains a "mysterious" new karma link toward the upper-right.   According to a poster in the avast forum:   "This is new in Avast 2015, you collect Karma [rewards] points [and badges] by using features of Avast, [like] installing Mobile security on your Android devices, posting on the forum, &etc.   It's planned that you can get 'swag' with these points, like free licenses maybe, or other stuff".
I checked out most of the SETTINGS to make sure they were as I wished... including importing all the customized settings from the previous version.   My registration was successfully carried-over as well.
At this point, I allowed the system back online, updated the definitions, and performed a FULL system SCAN.   Surprisingly, this took only 10 1/3 minutes (including [an optional] scan for PUPs):  17.4 Gig of data, consisting of 77,510 files in 4523 directories.   [As expected, no problems were found.]
I then tried the new HOME NETWORK SECURITY scan.   This scanned my Network and Router... very quickly (about half a minute), and pronounced everything secure:   Wireless secure (=encrypted), Router configured correctly, and my devices are NOT visible from the Internet
By the way, a SMART SCAN (available from the SCAN tab) is a simple way to have avast run all the types of installed scans:   a virus scan, a software-updater scan, AND a home network scan [and Grime Fighter, if that module was installed]; which again showed no problems.
Internet access is working, in IE, FF, PaleMoon & OutLook Express, including access to secure httpS:// sites.
All-in-all, a good experience so far (with the exception of the "karma" nonsense).
Finally, stress again that I have NOT tested avast's NG (Next Generation) hardware virtualization technology, since this feature is not available on XP.   This component seems to be one of the more problematic added to the new 2015 version, so anyone installing/testing it is still on their own.   I intend to wait a while longer before installing avast 2015 on my primary Win7 system.

  • Beware if you use Avast 2015: System Gets Borked After Optional Update KB3000850

I did controlled testing with Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise test system.  In this case, I installed optional update KB3000850 in a perfectly working and well tuned setup that was already running the up-to-date Avast 2015 Free antivirus package.
The update went in fine, but basically the system was badly broken after the update, emitting things like:
...and this one during logoff or restart:
Worst of all, the system would not successfully reboot.
A look at the Avast forum reveals that a lot of people are seeing these issues.
In order to successfully install the optional KB3000850 update and have a working system,
BEFORE DOING THE UPDATE you should remove Avast antivirus completely
    using the AvastClear tool:
    http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility
Some have reported their systems continue to work after the update and after reinstalling Avast, but in my testing my test system was re-borked in exactly the same ways by doing so.  Then the problems were again corrected by removing Avast.
For the moment I've put my sysetms back on Windows Defender, and everything seems to be working fine with KB3000850 in.
Avast engineering has yet to comment.  I'm sure they're scrambling to find the problems.

No fix has yet been posted by Avast (clearly they want to test it thoroughly), but reflection on this update yields some poignant questions about just who's at fault here...
    1.  Did Microsoft do in-depth testing of KB3000850 on systems with 3rd party antivirus software installed before rolling out this update?
    2.  Assuming the answer to the above is "no" or "not much", aren't Microsoft's managers sensitive to the fact that Windows Updates are losing credibility?  Hint:
Making an update "optional" doesn't absolve Microsoft from one bit of the responsibility for making it work right.
    3.  Did Microsoft make early copies of this update available to their partners?  For example Avast?  If not, why not?  Their user base is in the hundreds of millions.  If for no reason other than self-preservation,
does Microsoft not think it's important that their updates not break actual systems in the field?
    4.  For what it's worth, I've had zero problems with the update after removing Avast completely and dropping back to the integrated Windows Defender.  Is this Microsoft's plan?  To eliminate 3rd party antivirus vendors?

I have gone to this website almost everyday for years and I have not changed anything in my internet settings, but now I'm getting this message: secure connection failed: The Certifying Authority for this certificate is not permitted to issue a certificate with this name. During your upgrade, do you recall using Firefox's Refresh feature? This can happen when Firefox starts up slowly and says in order to make it less sluggish you can refresh/restore the browser. The best indication is that an Old Firefox Data folder appears on your desktop.
If so, your Firefox may no longer be set up to work with your security software. Some programs such as Kaspersky, ESET, avast 2015, and Bitdefender will filter your web traffic for threats. In order to filter secure sites, they must present a "fake" certificate for the site to Firefox, so they can be "in the middle" and read your secure communications. When you use the Refresh feature, then Firefox no longer is set up to trust the fake certificates.
Does that sound like a possibility?

Since I uninstalled avast! antivirus and installed Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 Thunderbird asks whether to accept an invalid certificate when trying to receive new messages.
Please have a look at the two attachments (there seems to be a problem with uploading jpg files).
Obviously Bitdefender manipulates the certificate (probably to be able to scan the mails via SSL connection). But I'm not sure.
Would you recommend to confirm an exception for this certificate (permanently)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you, christ1.
I found out that after disabling SSL Scanning in Bitdefender, this issue no longer exists.
Maybe this can be considered as confirmation that this certificate really belongs to Bitdefender. Because that's actually what I'm concerned about, i.e. how to validate this certificate to make sure that Bitdefender is the issuer.

See my Mac Malware Guide for help on protecting yourself from malware. You generally don't need anti-virus software.

  • Can't download Security Update 2015-002 1.0

I can't download Security Update 2015-002 1.0 from the App store. It starts to download and then saddlery stops and I'm back to where I started. I've tried restarting the system with no other apps running etc, but still no joy.

    Allan,
I have Avast virus checker installed, but I disabled file, mail & web browser checking and had the same problem.
I eventually was able to download the manual update DMG and that seems to have installed ok.
Now the Update RAW 6.03 has been installed, but continues to say it needs installing - galling.
Thanks to you and Linc for replying to my original post.

In PDF to Excel conversion dates like 03/12/15 convert to Dec 3rd 2015 not the correct date of Mar 12th 2015 whereas date 03/13/2015 converts correctly as March 13th 2015

    Hi DirTech,
Are both of these dates in the same Excel file? If they're in different files, are you choosing the same language for OCR (optical character recognition)?
If they are in the same PDF file, how was that PDF file created? Was it created from a third-party application (rather than an Adobe application)? If it was created by a third-party application, it could be that it wasn't written to spec, and that's why you're seeing some oddities in the PDF > Excel conversion.  (See Will Adobe ExportPDF convert both text and form... | Adobe Community.)

  • "Invalid Binary" error on app. Apple's reason is "Missing 64-bit support" due to changes from Feb 1st 2015

    Hello
Can anyone help me with an "Invalid Binary" error on my app.
    Apple's response is:
    Dear developer,
We have discovered one or more issues with your recent submission for "DPS Notes". To process your submission, the following issues must be corrected:
Missing 64-bit support - Beginning on February 1, 2015 new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must include 64-bit support and be built with the iOS 8 SDK. Beginning June 1, 2015 app updates will also need to follow the same requirements. To enable 64-bit in your project, we recommend using the default Xcode build setting of “Standard architectures” to build a single binary with both 32-bit and 64-bit code.
Once these issues have been corrected, use Xcode or Application Loader to upload a new binary to iTunes Connect. Choose the new binary on the app’s Details page in My Apps on iTunes Connect, and click Submit for Review.
    Regards,
    The App Store team
Can someone from the Adobe DPS team let me know how I can recreate the .ipa file so that it will meet Apple's requirements.
They seem to have moved the goalposts since I created the original .ipa file in December. I thought I'd submitted it, just went back through iTunes Connect to check info as I hadn't heard anything from them, then hit this brick wall. Any help offered would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rebecca

    Hi
I've Updated App Builder, gone back to the DPS App Builder portal, regenerated new zip and ipa files and downloaded them.
I clicked the Application Loader 3.0 link, downloaded the latest Appication Version, clicked on the "Deliver your App" button, and submitted the newly built App that was built using 32.4.2 version. (All the app icons were listed as "stored on server" so I presume they are all ok). The .zip file appeared to 'deliver' to Apple successfully. I've tried to resubmit it but get ta "Redundant Binary Upload. There already exists a binary upload with build version..." error message, so presume the orginal binary upload was successful. I have no idea how I can get this app from the "prepare for submission", to "in review". The last time I thought I'd submitted this app I got as far as the "waiting for review" status, and no further.
At the moment I don't have a"+" button in the Build section - as mentioned on page 66 of Adobe's Step_by_step_guide_to_dps_se.pdf.
So I can't add the new .zip file to the iTunes Connect > My Apps portal in the Build section of the Versions tab.
I have put a support email into Apple, but don't expect a reply any day soon.
The problem with starting all the way back through the App wizard is that I really want to use all the same App Name, Bundle ID, and details etc.
Do you mean, going back to the Folio Producer Panel, and building a whole new App?
This process certainly isn't for the faint-hearted!
    HELP!

  • "Bookmarks and history system will not be functional" with corrupt files found by Avast and websites loading slow ONLY in Firefox

Firefox is the only browser that lets me connect with my microphone. I need to use this feature for an online class. Earlier this evening, the message prompting me to allow or deny the class website permission to use the microphone stopped appearing, and without it the recording won't pick up any sound and I can't record anything.
I tried exiting and restarting Firefox. I had some extensions in use at the time, in particular Session Manager. The allow/deny message still wouldn't appear, so I restarted my computer.
Now when I open Firefox I see the "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message. In addition, the browser loads websites extremely slowly; it takes several minutes to load each page or for me to be able to click on anything (the URL bar, the menus, etc) My other browsers (Internet Explorer and Chrome) are running normally and load websites at a normal speed. I tried downloading the latest version of Firefox but it didn't fix anything. I also tried restarting the computer again but that didn't help either.
I ran my Avast software system check and it turned up that the following files under "C:\Users\(me)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Irozixj7.default" are "corrupted and unreadable":
    -cookies.sqlite-shm
    -cookies.sqlite-wal
    -localstore.rdf
    -places.sqlite-shm
There was one more problem on the scan, but it probably isn't relevant: for the file "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates\{9A2C6FA7-E04E-4819-B86A-8363A9D1E42A}\mpengine.dll" it says "The system cannot find the path specified." When I attempted to follow the path indicated, one of the folders (I can't remember which) said something along the lines of "You can't access this folder, do you want to permanently allow access to this folder?" I said yes and was able to access the folder.
I have tried to add the Places Maintenance extension but the speed is too sluggish to download anything. Trying to access any of the menus results in the browser freezing for several minutes then unfreezing but with the menu still unopened. Therefore none of the solutions found here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?esab=a&as=aaq) seem to work.
    My questions are as follows:
-Is it possible to figure out what caused the problem in the first place?
-Is there a way for me to fix it without losing my bookmarks and history?
-How can I avoid this happening again in the future?

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder. To quickly access this folder:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Next, keep this folder open, exit Firefox, and try moving the "corrupted and unreadable" files to a different folder. With the exception of localstore.rdf, which stores window positions, toolbar customizations, and other nonessential data, the other files appear to be session-specific files that hopefully are not critical. If you restart Firefox, does it behave more normally?
If not, try creating a fresh Firefox profile. It will have the Flash plugin, which is the control sites usually use to connects your camera and/or microphone, and other plugins, but otherwise will be a new setup. This article has the steps for starting up in the Profile Manager: [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]].
If sites work normally in the new profile, you can import your bookmarks from your old profile, as well as copying over other files that don't seem to be causing the problem. Some trial and error might be required to determine that. This article has some tips: [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].
If the new profile is no better, you can exit Firefox and use the Profile Manager to switch back to your original profile.
    Any improvement?
