Avast can't delete a virus

I caught a virus while deleting spam. Avast located the file, but it cannot delete it, due to lack of permissions. I tried to find the file and delete it in the finder, but I could not. What can I do?

That is Windows malware, and not a threat to your computer. It is in your local snapshots, which are backups kept on your internal hard drive for one week. Anything older than one week is removed. Just ignore this, and it'll be removed on its own.
This came onto your machine via e-mail, as LowLuster points out. You should NEVER let any anti-virus software remove malware of any kind from your e-mail. Doing so will probably leave it on the server (depending on your Mail settings), where it could be re-downloaded to your computer again, and will also corrupt the mailbox indices. Finally, note that Avast has a serious and long-standing problem with false positives. I don't generally recommend it.

You do not have a virus on your Mac or iPhone.
An AOL account is accessed as an IMAP account with the Mail app or email client on your Mac, and with the iPhone's Mail app. The sent spam messages being available in the account's Sent mailbox means your AOL account has been compromised.

It's not a virus.
Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is redirecting your browser. Use Open DNS to avoid that. Open DNS adds security and anti phishing filters and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
Click +
Enter these numbers exactly as you see them here.

Click +

Then click OK.

My grandson visited the BearShare website. Since then, the only home page that will "stick" in Firefox is http://search.bearshare.com. Repeated attempts to reset my home page have failed. After I reset the home page and close Firefox, when the program is restarted, the home page is, once again, http://search.bearshare.com.

Your iPhone CAN'T get a virus.   It was designed that way by Apple. It has NEVER happened.
You are being scammed by a Phishing attempt.    Most will direct you to enter your personal information that allows a hacker to get into your email or credit card information to steal from you.
Do not respond to phishing attempts.
Unless you were fool enough to jail break your phone.   In which case, you need to restore with iTunes (un jailbreak) to fix the problem.

Remove Verizon Protect or disable it if you cannot remove it and install a reputable anti virus / anti malware application from Google Play. I would use something along the lines of Lookout Mobile Security or AVG mobile, or Avast to name a few of them. There are others that work very well and use very little system resources to do it. I have used all of these and Lookout seems to work the best for me.

If your system crashes or you reinstall your operating system without deauthorising iTunes first, even a single computer can use up your limit of 5 authorisations. You can't deauthorise those dead installations individually. However once you've reached your limit of 5 you have the option to deauthorise them all in one go from your iTunes Store account and start over again. *Just note that you can only use this option once a year*: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

Can't delete photos from Iphone Photo Stream - Have tried everything Apple has instructed me

I am soooooooo frustrated. I just downloaded OS 5 on my Iphone 4 and bought Apple TV - and was introduced to what looked like the wonderful world of "iCloud" and Photostream. Particularly photo stream on my screen saver on my new Apple TV. I took numerous shots this weekend, most which I wanted to delete - with my Photo Stream on and all settings set on iCloud - my Iphone, and my PC.
For the life of me, I can not delete photos in my Iphone Photostream. I have done all you said Apple - go to iCloud - and "Reset PhotoStream..." (actually tried this about 10 times in the last 48 hours - and all I get is...
“Could Not Reset Your Photo Stream.
Your Photo Stream could not be reset at this time due to a server error. Try again later…”
I know I';m not alone on this as I have seen other postings/users with the similar complaint.
I have turned on and off - the on - the photostream on my Iphone - yes - it deletes the photos, but then when you turn it back on, they ALL come back - including the unwanted ones.
I even turned off - then back on- the photo stream on the iCloud DAshboard (because someone said to do it) and it still didn't work.
Then I plugged my Iphone in to the computer - to go into my Photos - and manually deleted the photos I didn't want. . I did delete them, as well as the unwanted photos in Photostream on my PC, but the freaking unwanted photos are still on my iphone - and wont' go away. It's like a virus that won't dissapear. I took pictures of this ugly cow at a pumpkin patch sticking it's tongue out at me, and I can't get rid of them!!!
We have long been fans/customers of Apple (we own 2 iphones, a Mac, and an IPad). And.. just so you know, in all the time I've been writing this, I've been on "hold" waiting for an Apple Tech support person (3rd call to them in 2 days) to pick up, and all I get now is a ringing phone w no one answering it... I read the other VERY frustrated users on this forum and I don't see one clear cut answer on how to fix these problems. Apple - at least you can recognize the problem, own up to it, and tell us that this will be fixed - which I sure it will be at some point. You have to get this together.
Steve is gone (god bless his soul and I thank him for all he has done) and my experiences with Apple now have turned horrible. And if any tech support person (and I know you guys are very nice and try the best you can) knows a thing or three on how to fix this, my case number is 252 894 095 and I would love to fix this issue. I think it has great potential but it clearly has bugs in it now.

If you are using a PC, log on to iCloud using Safari (rather than Explorer) to reset the photostream. Then turn iPhone/iPad photostream off and back on. I was getting the same server error as you and this advice from another blog worked for my iPhone and iPad. But I still can't get photostream deleted from my apple tv. There does not seem to be a photostream on/off control In Apple tv 4.4 software. I tried switching the screen saver to one of the ones that comes preloaded on the device, then back to photostream but all the old photos are still there. If anyone can help with this, I would appreciate it.

Can't delete unwanted mail

After a minor app-freeze problem I restarted and discovered that now I can't delete some messages from my email (Apple Mail version 3.6 (936)) inbox: instead of moving to the Trash folder, the email stays right there in the Inbox and the title turns from black type to grey. I'm reluctant to trash the Mail prefs because There doesn't seem to be any way to do that without losing the Inbox contents. Is this a virus? Any ideas?

Is this a POP account or IMAP? If POP, open the Inbox of only one account (if you have more than one), click on Mailbox in the menubar and choose Rebuild. Wait patiently for Rebuild to finish, and be aware that for a short time all messages will seem to disappear.
Once the index has been refreshed for this Inbox, you should be able to trash the messages.
If IMAP, remove the account, and then add it back.
If you have any questions, ask before doing any of this.

There's a little cartoon and chinese characters in my status bar that I didn't not put there and can't delete

I recently had my account smurfed,I think it's called-my email was attacked-sent a bunch of emails to friends as if from me---I changed password,etc-no other problems since-but I realized this morning that there's something in my status bar with chinese characters after it(the attack on my email was from Chinese source) and when I put my cursor over it-it doesn't give me any options-doesn't open...I suspect its from the same attacker---what is it? From Apple support, I found out this file is in the operating system folder. Apple support is satisfied that it's not a virus because a virus wouldn't be mixed with the operating system files. I only have familiarity with PCs and know that malware frequently disguises itself within the Windows operating system. Are there any out there who are adept with OS X 10.8.2? There must be someone. I mean, people code software for new Macs all the time. Anything would be helpfull: a book, an article--anything. I don't want to spend money on an antivirus program that may not even work and probably also slow down my computer. I went through all the major antivirus programs on my PCs. All of them allowed malware to get onto my computers. And what's worse, they couldn't delete the viruses. They would just give complicated instructions that involved manually editing the registry in Windows. The primary reason I bought a Mac is that I was told at a Mac retail store that I don't need an antivirus program; that the operating system is designed with built in barriers to malware. How can I delete EVERY THING off my Mac and have it like new?

There are sites that I've viewed and programs I have downloaded that I NEED to delete completely from my computer!! Ie: Friends telling me that a program is free and has no viruses, but it does! Sites forwarded that are supposed sfw, but are not!!

I remember on my Dell PC if I hit f8 or f11 (can't remember which one) a screen would appear and if I chose option "Dell Factory Image Restore" it would DELETE EVERY THING off of the computer and have it like new - as if you just got it from Dell.

Boot from the software install DVD and do an "erase and install" when prompted.

Can't delete messages using delete key in Outlook 2007

After upgrading to Exchange 2010, we are seeing an intermittent problem where users in Outlook 2007 can't delete messages from their inbox using the delete key. Opening the message and clicking delete from there will delete it from the inbox.
They can also drag the messages from the inbox to deleted items.
The issue comes and goes during the day. One minute delete will work and then it won't and then it will again.

How many uses have the issue?
Did you check the Outlook add-in or Anti-Virus application?
Please check whether there is any error/warning event in the Event Viewer.
Please recreate the Outlook profile for user if possible.
Please try to run the cmdlet New-MailboxRepairRequest.

I am using Mac OS X 10.8.3. I am about to install Windows 7 on my iMac with Bootcamp. Can I get Windows virus on my Mac because of Bootcamp?

If you do, it'll only affect the Windows partition of your hard drive.
If you feel really worried, I'd suggest running Windows in a virtual machine using Parallels or similar. You can set things up so that there's no access to your Mac from the virtual machine and, if the VM gets a problem, you can just delete it.

What makes you think there is a "virus"? Any symptoms...?
There are other types of malware (such as trojans) that can affect Mac OS X, but no viruses. A trojan would have to trick you into installing something (the malware) by making you think it is something else. You would be notified (by the system) that you are running a downloaded application for the first time, AND if something will be done to update your current system, you will be asked to authenticate (with your admin user name and password). If something like that comes up when you don't expect it, you should be suspicious (and NOT authenticate). Just opening an email won't do anything, even if it's an email that may affects Windows PCs.

In the past, when I bothered to run it a few times a year, the only things it found were junk emails that I had not bothered to delete with embedded malware, all of it aimed at Windows PCs.
