AVCHD and importing to 2003 Mac G5

I just bought a Sony HDR-CX550V Handycam - great camera - but I am having problems getting the content on to my aging MAC computer. The computer lists the video files as CPI clips but does not read them. The format it records in is AVCHD I believe. I assume there is a piece of software out there to solve my problem but I am not sure what I need to make things work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Besides ilife 06' I also have Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 on my computer.

have a look at the products of shedworx.com ..
.. The computer lists the video files as CPI clips
no, the clipinfo/CPI doesn't contain any video, it's inside the .MTS ..
converting AVCHD on a G5 is a very, very, very time-consuming process ..
used MacMinis with an Intel-processor start at ~ 400$ ..

  • Recording songs on my PC laptop and importing to Logic/Mac?

I have a Mac desktop and have started using Logic for my recordings. I have a very fast laptop that is unfortunately a PC.
I was looking at this software called Mixcraft which looks like a pretty nice GarageBand clone for doing some recordings when on the road. The only problem is that there is no easy way of importing the project to GarageBand (or Logic), the solution being exporting every song file as AAC/MP3/etc and loading them back up in Logic/GB. This is, obviously, very annoying.
    So my question is twofold:
    1. Is there any PC software out there that will allow me to transfer its projects over to Logic and GarageBand?
    2. and if not, is there a good recording software that works on both PC and Mac? I've heard good things about Ableton Live.. would purchasing a license for that allow me to install it on both PC and Mac and have the opportunity to transfer my projects back and forth?
I realize this is the Logic discussion thread but I couldn't think of a better place to ask this in the Apple discussions and you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable bunch I know when it comes to this stuff!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can buy an old Logic version for example 5.5.1 which was the last one for PC ( hope you can find someone on Ebay ). This will do the job I guess...

There are many DAWs on the today market which are based for MAC & PC, so it is your opinion what to get...

  • FCE AVCHD and Importing

    Hello,
I'm trying to import AVCHD files from a Sony HDR-SR11 to FCE 3.5 using Voltaic and the import time is excruciatingly slow (roughly 12x real time). I understand that FCE 4 works with AVCHD files but I'm also reading posts on this forum and elsewhere complaining about the slow import times.
Can someone please tell me if an upgrade to FCE 4 will dramatically improve AVCHD import times? I don't want to purchase/upgrade only to find out I'm right where I began. Anything close to real time import would be a huge improvement since I'm working with shorter clips.
    Thanks for your help!

Are you converting the videos to QuickTime using Apple Intermediate Codec? (that is, with Voltaic?)
Correct. I'm currently using Voltaic to convert the MTS files to Quicktime/AIC. This allows me to import and edit without rendering in FCE 3.5. And it is so sloooooow.
Are you talking about Voltaic taking 12x real time; or importing the clips into FCE taking that long?
I'm talking about Voltaic talking so long. I have to convert them before importing them in to FCE 3.5. After being transcoded, the files are fine and FCE 3.5 is great.
So, I'm curious if others are having super long import times with FCE 4 and directly logging/transcoding within vs using a third-party app like Voltaic.
Again, once the clips are converted to AIC they work great in FCE 3.5 on Snow Leopard. Don't think that is the issue. The issue is converting from MTS to AIC.
Will FCE 4 do a quicker job than Voltaic?
    Thanks for your replies!

  • Canon AVCHD and Importing

I recently purchased a Canon R42 that supports AVCHD. I would like to use this with Final Cut Pro-X (which I have extremely little experience with yet) and was wondering how one imports from this camera. I.e., with Adobe Premier Pro, for instance, you need to copy the entire direcrtory structure on the camera to hard disk and then import it into the program. How so with FCP-X?
On a side note and perhaps important, the Canon R42 has only a USB port, no FW.
On another note I was told but have yet to verify that FCP-X will not allow the placement of Titles and Text at will. I find this hard to believe.
And advice appreciated and thank you!
    Ron

You can certrainly put titles anywhere you want, I just did so in a video I shot of my nephew's wedding.
I learned to stop listening to other people, instead, I read the specs and functions of a program, then do a trial if there is one, and make my decision based on my own experience. I think FCPX is kick butt! Look at the post I put up a couple of days ago, "My Positive Experience... https://discussions.apple.com/message/22787766#22787766,

Thunderbird installs and looks like it's importing everything but only mail is and nothing for settings or filters. In fact I can't find a means to even add the e-mail account settings. This is nothing like my older versions of Thunderbird were but that's been a few years ago. I could use some advice. I'm trying to install version 24.6.0

Ok Tools menu > account setting. To check that no account settings come over. The absence of an account in the left hand pane is no indication nothing transferred.
Tools menu > import to import individual components such as address books that did not import. If you have had a partial import, avoid the everything option, as it is not going to work for you.

  • IDVD and Importing Video Format (Mac & PC)

    Greetings All,
Our college is creating a DVD (using iDVD 09). Three will be approximately fifteen (15) total videos at 60 second each. These will come from various MAC AND PC software(s).
What is the best file formats that we can use as 'standards'. We do not want to limit them to just one as it may not be easy for them to use just one - hence three.
Note: The eventual use will be commercial-grade projectors in an auditorium setting (shown from the iDVD-created DVD)
Thanks so much for your assistance!
    -jimmy

For openers, do NOT accept ANY AVI or WMV files.
DV, mpeg-4 and H.264 will probably work. You can use the free MPEG Streamclip to convert any of these files that are a problem in iDVD.

    What do you not understand?
You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that
    Or
However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all

Is this music purchased back in DRM days? I don't actually have any iTunes music so I can't test with my iTunes 7.5, but I know that without iTunes 10 you cannot even connect to the store anymore.  I wouldn't think that would require an active connection to the store all the time, otherwise how could you play music on a computer in the middle of nowhere?  Did you do something to trigger iTunes suddenly wanting to connect and check on machine authorization?

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Even if I create a catalog on laptop and import to my desktop on a thumb drive, the images are only accessible as long as the thumb drive is inserted.

Sounds like you may need to repair the Disk Permissions on your drive where your images are stored.

I am experiencing Mavericks failing to copy subdirectories from usb sticks, I am backing up game saves from a console. Both sticks I use are fine, same permissions of course since the console wrote the files. Sometimes it copies, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to the mounting process.
Thank God Apple hasn't (yet) broken bash.

  • How to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 Mac version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video

My question: Is it possible to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 MacBook Pro/ Mac Os X version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video?
My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

    Hi
With the reservation of that I us:
    • iMovie 9.0.4
    • Mac OS X.6.9
    see my notes
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Someone has sent me the AVCHD and DCIM folders to import into iMovie. They live on my desktop. How do I bring them into an event library?

    DCIM contains only stills.jpg ...
AVCHD is a highly complex file structure:
the 'video iself' is within STREAM as .mts, plus corresponding .cpi files in the CLIPINF ...
if the structure is intact, you go via File/Import/Camera Archive …
WITHOUT such a complete structure, the mts are not readable for iM and the automatic conversion routines don't get triggered. you have to manually convert/rewrap with 3rd party tools.-
the pics/jpegs can be imported via Finder/drag'n drop.-
