AVCHD converted to ProRes via FCP's Log & Transfer --does ProRes retain TC?

Looking for any users who have imported AVCHD using FCP's Log & Transfer and converted to ProRes. Was your original camera timecode retained? Or was each of your clip's timecode reset to zero?
More specifically, there are hopefully new users of Sony's NX5U out there shooting AVCHD with a choice of two modes...PCM audio or Dolby audio. Have you been able to successfully transcode to Pro Res in each instance while still retaining camera timecode?
This can be a dealbreaker for someone like myself who works with a lot of documentary footage and is potentially a buyer of the new Sony camera. If I discover that virtually no one can get AVCHD successfully converted to ProRes with original timecode, it may tilt me to buying the EX-1 whose co-dec is a native one for Final Cut.
Thanks for any help you can offer...John

I don't know about this camera but most AVCHD do not record continuous timecode but only record timecode on each clip starting at zero. If you set I/O in the L&T window the timecode portion selected in that clip will transfer to FCP.

  • P2 MXF: Log & Transfer does not react

    Hi people.
Log & Transfer no longer works for my P2 MXF folders.
When I browse and locate CONTENTS folders, clicking OK results in nothing: the Log&Transfer window remains empty.
It all used to be fine, and I have previously imported and used those folders and MXF files for various projects.
Haven't changed anything since then (apart from upgrading to FCP7 fomr FCP6). The file/folder structure is still the same.
What could have possibly gone wrong?
    Please help.
    Thanks!

Try trashing preferences.  It worked before, but not after upgrading.  Did you upgrade on top of FCP 6?  Or do a full system wipe and install from scratch?

  • AVCHD - optimizing "first cut" from all those "log&transfer" files

I am sure this is a very simple question.
When I log and transfer a 32GB card into FCP, evidently I find myself with a myriad a clips of various sizes. With tape, for comparison purposes, I would likely have 1 or 2 large clips, for instance 60min tapes I usually would divide into two 30min clips.
So, in the case of tape then my "first cut" would simply consist in viewing those clips and cut into my sequence, easy enough.
However now, with all those clips in the AVCHD world, it's a bit of a nightmare. What do you guys do ? I guess it's a matter of merging all those clips, but I am just not sure how to do that in an efficient, intelligent way.
    Thx !

    Hi -
While I would use Jim's method of viewing and editing from the individual clips, I do know some people that use the following method -
Once you have Log and Transferred all your clips to your browser, select all the source clips in your browser, and drag them to the timeline. Name this sequence "all clips" Now you have a timeline that will allow you to play through all your footage, in order, in one continuous viewing.
Then create a second timeline that will be the actual edit, name it "edit" and open it. Now you will have two timelines open. Click on the tab for the "all clips" timeline, play the timeline with all the content, and when you come to a scene you want to add to your "edit" timeline, type the f key to load the scene you are currently watching on your "all clips" timeline to the viewer.
Then click on the tab for your "edit" timeline and edit the scene there. Click on the tab of the "all clips" timeline and continue viewing.
    Hope this helps.

  • FCP and LOG & Transfer

I upgraded from FCE to FCP two weeks ago. Everything is going well.
I was attempting to use LGO and Transfer in FCP. But once I select the option
menu it crashes. I used the Crash analyser and it says
    the crash thread is
    2 com.apple.P2Plugin 0x0ca8b23b TimecodeDecrement + 189
I was able to use L&T on my desktop FCE with no problem. and pull video off my Cancon HF10.
No with FCP crash crash crash
    any suggestions?
I have not camera connected to my laptop and it L&T crashes.

Whoa, wait, you're on a PowerBook, with 10.3, and installed FCP 7? QuickTime Pro version and other things are going to have major issues. Need to be on OS X 10.6 for FCP 7. You also need to be on an Intel machine for FCP 7.

  • "clips queued-idle" error using log&transfer in FCP7

Hi, I shoot HDV on a Sony Z5 and now want to use a Sony memory recording unit (HVR-MRC1) instead of tapes.
Today I ran some tests and the first time all went well: I connected the HVR-MRC1 with a firewire cable, opened log&transfer in FCP 7 and no problem importing all the files (after downloading a plugin).
But then I deleted all the files and recorded some new clips. Once I tried to import those in FCP, using log & transfer I could only import 7 of the 9 clips. Of the 2 clips it didn't want to import it said "clips queued - idle".
Also, I realised that none of the clips I shot could be previewed and I couldn'y choose an in- and outpoint before importing. I could only import the whole clip.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me with this. I'm looking forward to working tapeless, but I need to be 100% sure that I'll have access to all my footage.
    Many thanks in advance!

First thing, I always copy the material to a local hard drive before doing the log and transfer.  Make sure you copy the containing folder from the camera.  If you change the folder structure, fcp will not be able to access the material.
What settings did you shoot with.  FCP is not compatible with certain formats.  If you have access to Premiere, you may be able to convert the files to an fcp friendly format.
    Good luck.

  • Log & Transfer w/Canon t1i

I've installed the CanonEOSPlugin & changed the cameras.plist as described here:
    http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-rebel-t2i-eos-550d-hd/475295-canon-eos-fin al-cut-plugin-will-work-t2i.html
I've read this thread which relates to my question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11691022&#11691022
When I go to FCP File>Log & Transfer, the screen comes up, but nothing shows up in the queue. If I try to add a folder & point to any of the folders via my card reader, I get a warning message that says "... contains unsupported media or contains an invalid directory structure..."
My footage is 720p. I'm using a card reader & other info is listed below in my profile. Anyone else have any luck with this plug-in &/or suggestions for getting it to work with my setup?

Yes, I performed the hack. Here it is... does it look right to you? I read somewhere to move the T1i to the top so I did. See below.
Yes, I copied the whole card. There were 2 folders & I dragged them both over to a new folder I created on the external hard drive called Rebel. When I point to that Rebel folder, I still get the warning message.
    Thanks for your help.

  • .MTS via Log & Transfer - ISSUES

I am creating a project from AVCHD files. I have imported some via L&T directly from different SD cards. Other .MTS files have been given to me as data archives (ie: no AVCHD file structure).
When I open the L&T window and try to transfer the [archived] .MTS files (now residing on one of my external drives), they are grayed out. I assume this is because the file structure that can be read by FCP L&T is not present as it was when I captured from the cards.
So what are my options? Is my only option converting these files with Toast or a similar program?
Your wisdom and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
    cheers!

    Hello,
I'm shooting with a new Panasonic HMC150 onto an SDHC Class 6 card. I'm having the same problem the above user is having even after copying the entire folder structure as it is shown on the SDHC card directly onto my hd. The Log&Transfer still won't read the .mts files. It reads through all the folders until i get to the stream folder containing the light grey .mts files which are un openable
I'm reading about this same problem from other users and can't seem to find any real explanation. Why do I have to buy toast when I'm supposed to be able to transcode to prorez 422 proxy from FCP7 log and transfer? I'm depressed and aggravated at this point and have resorted to heavy alcohol consumption. Any good advice will make me cry fermented tears of joy. Thanks.

  • FCP 7 crashes when Log & Transfer MXF files

I just got a new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio that includes FCP 7.
I just received footage from my DP shot on a Panasonic HVX200 on P2 Cards and saved as MXF files. I saved all files onto my MacBook with a backup on an external USB drive (another set was saved on a Firewire 800 drive).
    All footage was shot 720p/24fps.
I can view the files on the Log & Transfer preview window - but when I attempt to ingest via Log & Transfer, the transfer begins but suddenly stops (status is idle) and the red ! stop sign appears - obviously the file was not ingested. When I attempt to re-start the transfer or try with another file, FCP crashes.
My understanding is FCP 7 is able to accept native P2 format files (MXF) without transcoding - so it is very disappointing this is not working.
    Easy Setup settings are:
    Format: Panasonic DVCPRO HD
    Use: DVCPRO HD 720p/24
    Portion of error log:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000ffffffff
    Crashed Thread: 0
I would greatly appreciate any insight!

It doesn't transcode...it wraps the MXF files into a QT wrapper, joining audio and video. DVCPRO HD P2 mainly. AVCintra native support is here too, but you need to render to ProRes.
    BUT...that isn't the case here...try this:
in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

  • Canon 650D doesn't support FCP 7 log and transfer...

Canon 650D doesn't support FCP 7 log and transfer...
anyone know how to solve this problem?  thanks alot

Download and install the latest version of the E-1 plugin from Canon’s website here:

  • Quality of Clip captured using ProRes and clip converted to ProRes

I have captured the same clip in both HDV 1080160 and ProRes 422.
After editing the HDV version I export it using QT Conversion using the compression type "Apple ProRes." I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is good.
After editing the ProRes version I export it using QT Movie using the current settings. I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is bad.
Both clips are "ProRes" when imported into Compressor, and they both look fine in the Compressor preview window. The difference is that one was captured in HDV 1080i60 and converted to ProRes using QT, and one was captured in ProRes and exported as a QT Movie. Surprisingly, at least to me, the clip originally captured in HDV and then converted to ProRes looks much better than the clip originally captured in ProRes when they are imported into DVDSP. Both .mov files are compressed using the same Compressor preset, and the preset is unaltered.
I assumed the clip originally captured using the FCP ProRes preset would yield the better quality, but this isn't the case. I've tried capturing using ProRes 422 HQ, and the results are the same. I must be missing something, but so far I cannot explain it.
    Thanks

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.

  • Importing Mov. Files and Converting to Prores

Hello everyone. I just purchased the Canon 5D Mark 3. I'm new to DSLR's. I'm not sure how to import and convert my footage to Apple's Prores files. I'm curious if there is a thread that will explain the process to import and convert the footage. To put things in perspective my last camera was a mini dv. Sony FX1. So I have been importing footage via firewire for a while now. Kinda lost since the world of Video has changed. Thanks for any and all help, advice, links and otherwise.
    Jeffery

This is the typical tapeless workflow for FCP...including Canon 5D.  But, not sure it works for the Mark III...worth a shot:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhDnyWFAM10
If that won't do it...then use Compressor to convert to ProRes.  Or MPEG STREAMCLIP...or 5DtoRGB (that one takes a long time)

  • MPG to Final Cut Pro , convert mpg files to FCP freely

Why need to convert/import MPG files to Final Cut Pro?
Final Cut Pro is the premium choice for any Mac video editing, and it is widely used by Mac users now. These MPEG standard files can be these different codes and cause failure in importing to Final Cut Pro. If anyone comes across the situation, the best solution is to get aids from MPEG/MPG to FCP converter for Mac, which can help you to convert MPEG group files to FCP compatible video format and then files can be easily imported for editing job.
As we know that Final Cut Pro don't natively support MPG, MPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 files, it can import MPEG-4 files (but need to be rendered once you place them on your timeline) and MOV files (without rendering). Therefore, to import MPG to Final Cut Pro directly, the best way is to convert MPG to Final Cut Pro supported Apple ProRes MOV files.
How to convert MPG to Final Cut Pro(fcp)
    Step 1: Import MPG files
Download the latest version of MPG to Final Cut Pro Converter, install and run. And then, click Add Files to import MPG files to FCP, or you can also drag MPG files directly to MPG to Final Cut Pro directly.
Step 2: Choose output format and directory
You can click the drop-down list of Convert Toto select output format as "Final Cut Pro"-> "Apple ProRes MOV ". After that, click "…" of Save Toto designate a directory to save your converted files.
Step 3: Convert MPG to Final Cut Pro (X)
Click Convert to transcode MPG to MOV for editing in Final Cut Pro.
MPG to Final Cut Pro Converter is a practical tool for you to convert MPG, MPEG files to Final Cut Pro supported MOV files in order to free import MPG to Final Cut Pro (X) , FCE, iMovie on Mac OS X Mountain Lion . Besides, it is also able to convert MPG to other video files AVI, WMV, MP4, MKV FLV, DV, 3GP, ASF, RM etc.

Import unsupported MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express
Summary:If you are looking for the best way to transcode MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos to ProRes MOV for FCP 7/X and FCE, you can follow this post, it has offered best solutions for editing MPEG videos on Mac in Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express.
    Cases:
The following are two problems when some users import MPEG-1/MPEG-2 to Final Cut:
"I am trying to import MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X. I have the raw files from a Sony Handicam HDR-SR5 as well as raw files from an Sony Handicam MDR-CX560. These files were recorded as MPEG-2 files and copied from the camera hard drives (entire folders were copied containind the MPEG-2 fies) to a local hard drive on my computer. Final Cut Pro X does not recognize the files and will not import them. I have tried to use Compressor to conver the fies. I am using the very latest version that touts being able to export to Final Cut X format. I don't see that option anywhere in the settings."
    Question:
Is there a way to get MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X without having to convert them?
    Answer:
Don't try to work with (highly compressed) MPEG 2 in FCP X. Use software to convert to ProRes 422 first, it's best codec for final cut pro or final cut express. Life will be much easier for you if you do. ProRes 422 is roughly between 5 and 8 times bigger than native camera footage - sometimes as much as 10 times, I believe, but it's well worth it for editing, effects and playback quality. The time required depends largely on your processor power but 30 mins sounds realistic.
    Software you need:
Pavtube HD Video Converter for Mac
This software can convert MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Apple ProRes 422 codec for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Expr editing without rendering.
    Step by step guide:
    1. Download and install the best MPEG1/MPEG2 to ProRes Converter and launch it to add your videos to it.
    2. Choose output format. Click on the “Format”> Final Cut Pro, Apple PreRes 422(HQ), Apple PreRes 422, Apple ProRes 422(LT), etc are all the proper choice for you.
    3. Click "Settings" to adjust the parameters as you want, like Video Codec, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, bit rate, channels. Set the video frame rate as 30fps, video size as 1920*1080 will be better.
    4. Click Convert button to start MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut friendly Apple ProRes 422 for native editing on Mac OS X.
    5. When the conversion ends, you can run the Final Cut Pro and click File --> Import --> Files to import the resulted MOV files and edit them in FCP easily, you can follow this import video to fcp guide.
From the steps above, I think you got the point to convert and import MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to Apple ProRes 422 for Final Cut editing, please have a try, this software will solve you MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 importing and editing problems, and then you can import and use your MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 in Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Express on Mac without any problems.
Now you can get DVD Creator which can help you easily burn video to DVD disc/ISO files.

  • Premiere Markers export and import: Roundtrip via FCP XML not working

The objective of my project is to create a sports app that records markers and saves it in different formats of XML / CSV that I can then import in different NLE packages.
I have already succeeded with Vegas Pro but also want to support NLEs for MAC-OS.
In order to approach this analytically I have exported a very simple project with 1 sequence including 1 clip and 3 markers (with length zero and length > 0) and exported it
in FCP XML from Adobe Premiere CC and do a round-trip import it via FCP import into Adobe Premiere CC.
This round-trip does not work. Any insight why or any support what other mechanism will work?
    Thanks
    Thomas

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
    the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?
    Regards,
    TK

  • C300 fcp 7 log and transfer

hi. i have a folder structure and i am trying to import on my hard drive via log and transfer. i don't have the original card. I downloaded both the xf utility and the xf transfer. i am on 10.8.6. Each time i am getting the unsupported media error. The folder reads : "AA39" with the contents"AA0399.CIF
    AA0399.THM
    AA0399.XML
    AA039901.MXF
    AA039901.SIF
all my codecs are up to date. any ideas. thanks.

That's not the proper card structure. It needs to look like this.  if it doesn't, then you don't have the proper card structure, and FCP will not import the footage. The FULL INTACT card structure is needed in order for FCP to Log and Transfer the footage.

  • AVCHD HMC150 Log & Transfer

Just wondering when doing a Log & Transfer using 720/24 under preferences it has remove pulldown and duplicate frames highlighted. I have been turning that off, is that correct. I assume so since it is a true 24. Also does it just decided ProRes for transfer or can I choose a different format?
    Thanks

While my situation isn't the same as yours, it's a similar problem. We often use a Firestore on-camera recorder to record QuickTime files live to the unit's hard drive. When importing them into FCP, they have two audio channels set up as stereo. The workaround I use is to load all of the clips into a blank Timeline, select all and hit Option l (lowercase L) to change to two non-stereo and then Command l (lowercase L again) to unlink the audio from the video. I then delete the channel I don't need and set the pan on the first clip to 0 (centered). I copy that clip and then paste the Pan attribute to the remaining audio clips.
I know it sounds convoluted but it works and actually takes less than a minute to do all the clips.
