AVCHD converter question

Here are the bullet points
I took some footage from my Cannon HF 200.
The footage was taken on a 32 SDHC card.
The footage is now transferred to an external drive. I am using Adobe Premiere 8.
The footage is in the MTS. format and I am trying to convert it.
I am looking at this called AVCH converter but unsure if it is any good and I do not want to download spamware
I have heard that something called a video splitter would be good.
I just want to convert the footage into a format where the video does not skip and looks presentable.
Any recommendations would be helpful.

Your project preset (new project dialog) is set as close as possible to the properties of the video to be imported so that you will have a reasonable template from which to edit. If you video is AVCHD Full HD1080i30 (that is 1920 x 1080 frame size at 30 frames per second) and did not have 5.1 channel sound, you would select the project preset (new project dialog) = NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD1080i30. By default, Edit Menu/Preferences/General "Default Scale to Frame Size" would be checked.
So, when you go to Render the Timeline (Edit Mode) by pressing the Enter Key of the computer main keyboard, the end result will be the best possible preview of the end product displayed in the Edit Mode Monitor. It does not impact Quality. The program generates preview files to be used for preview purposes. There is no encoding going on in this process. This Rendering does not stop you from exporting with a different export choice. But, the ideal is as described to edit with a template as close as possible to the source media and export accordingly. Beware of those high definition rendered preview files and any pile ups of them on your hard drive. Best direct those preview files to an external hard drive (formatted NTFS, not FAT32).
Playback of your Canon AVCHD with a .mts file extension is another story. True, you right click the video and see an option for Open With, but will your AVCHD .mts playback natively in Windows Media Player. I think not unless you have certain plugins and third party decoders. The choice of player may present a challenge. I am not sure if I understand what you mean by:

up in? I chose Windows Media player. It is still an MTS file but will this have any effect during the conversion process?
Playback of a video on a player should not impact its properties, so I am not sure what I am missing here.

Editing AVCHD footage - AVCHD Converter needed !

Hey everyone,
I'm working with a new camcorder recording in 1920x1080 HD AVCHD (*.mts).
Since editing avchd material nativ requires loads of cpu speed, I'm looking
for a AVCHD converter which provides good quality and file speed.
I guess the size doesnt really matter.
I've tried Canopus AVCHD Converter, but I'm not sure if thats the best
possible tool as well as workin fine with CS4.
(What format should AVCHD be converted to?)
I'd really appreciate a few answers on how to speed up the HD workflow!

Another way you could do it, although more expensive is to use a Cineform product.
I have a SONY Handycam which will accept a 16GB memory chip and use a relatively outdated machine (Ie quad core AMD with xppro) and Cineform Prospect HD along with Premiere Pro CS3.
Prospect has a capture, conversion module (HD Link), which won't capture AVCHD files, but if I record the HD video to the chip instead of the hard drive of the camera, I can then insert the chip into a USB chip reader and the HD Link will directly convert the AVCHD files from the chip into Cineform .AVI files and save them onto the computer HD which can then be edited in CS3.
There is a minor problem with the alpha channel which can be worked around using quicktime files.
I've never looked at the Cineform product Neo Scene HD, but it may be cheaper. I'm not sure if Neo Scene converts the AVCHD files.

I assume you're talking about a cable that plugs into the iPhone's 3½mm sound output port on top of the iPhone.
When the music is playing, while it's plugged into your car, look at the volume at the bottom of the iPhone's music screen. Is it turned up reasonably high?

AVCHD convertion

Hi Iam having a few problems with my I movie reading avchd files it worked ok from the ad card but from the Panasonic camera hard drive the movie clips show as question marks and won't import . I have plugged the camera in and it shows on the desk top I opened the icon and copies the avchd to a external hard drive but trying to import it it s greyed out is there a free prog that I can download to convert it to a file that I movie 11 can read and also will I have to do it clip by clip so I can edit in iMovie 11

AVCHD import question

Some great people explained the options to bring AVCHD into FCP 6.0.4 (both converting it to ProRes and using Toast to convert it into DVCProHD).
My questions are: is there a quality issue between the two? Is there an advantage to using the Toast conversion and pulling it into the browswr (is it more like it's original quality)?
Second, why is the AVCHD file, when dragged from SD card onto desktop, only about 2 gig, and then after using the Toast program to convert, it's now 20 gig (aprox sizes)???
Is it decompressing? Is it normal to be so much larger? Why is this? What is it adding?

No you are right on. AVCHD really does a great job of reducing the enormous amount of Data in an HD video stream. However playing this back and editing it is currently beyond the power of most native computer/software configurations.... so we have to convert it.
As you noticed Apples' ProRez gets really big. It's designed to 'hold' most of the resolution of an uncompressed HD stream (200MB + per sec!), yet provide real time playback and editing on a current Mac.
Given your AVCHD footage has already disposed of most of it's native information (ie resolution) the question is 'do you need such a big container for editing?' I suspect not.
If your AVCHD format / cmera is already supported by FCP, then check preferences of the Log and Transfer window of FCP (click on the little gear icon at the top) and try changing the codec setting of the AVC HD line to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Its much smaller than ProRez and will do a good job of editing your work.
As you mention DVCPro HD is also a terrific choice. I think its even smaller than AIC (but still a bigger container than AVC HD so you won't lose much) and edits well. It is even a great presentation format if you play back from a Mac with the Codecs in place. But as you note, FCP won't convert to DVC Pro from the Log and Transfer window yet. Toast is a good option for this.
I like DVC Pro HD ... but that might just be because I've used it for a while....
Try a sample of both ... see which floats your boat!

Rookie has some "easy" AVCHD workflow questions

Hello all,
I just started with that whole video thing. Last week I got my Canon HF S10 (Full-HD). And so far I'm pretty happy.
I hope you can give me a little kick-start. I use a iMac 24" with 2.4GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM.
I've successfully edited my first little test movie. But... some questions came to my mind:
1. When I select "Log & Transfer", do I have to select a specific codec FCP is converting my AVCHD footage to? I went with defaults for now (AIC?). Should I select a Pro Res codec?
2. When editing, my video had these horizontal lines (I recorded in 50i). I applied a video filter to de-interlace the video. It looked way better. But do I have to apply this filter to every piece of my video, or can I apply that effect globally. Or are there video preferences somewhere, which I didnt find?
3. The preview in the Viewer/Canvas was very unsharp. Is that normal (due to "realtime" editing)?
4. When editing was done, I exported via Quicktime to the Vimeo-specs I wanted (1280x720, H.264, AAC, etc.). It went well, but: 8 minutes of video took 4-5 hours to render. When working on a 1hour movie, do I have to render the whole week-end? (Yes, I just stepped up from SD & iMovie ^^)
5. FCP made some pretty big files. What is the smartest way to store/compress my video?

Yes you should, and if you have FCS 3 you can use ProRes 422 (LT) and you won't lose any disk space.

If you want progressive video in the end, you might look and see if there's not a PF25 mode. I know on the NTSC versions there's a PF30 mode that shoots progressive video, thus avoiding the whole need for the filter.

If it looked ok when you were done, I wouldn't worry about this.

As someone else suggested, use Compressor for this step - not QuickTime conversion.
5. FCP made some pretty big files. What is the smartest way to store/compress my video?
It depends. If you think you may want to work on the project again you can use media manager to consolidate things a bit. Otherwise I just produce an archive file that is super-high bitrate h.264 or MPEG-2 at full resolution.

AVCHD converted to ProRes via FCP's Log & Transfer --does ProRes retain TC?

Looking for any users who have imported AVCHD using FCP's Log & Transfer and converted to ProRes. Was your original camera timecode retained? Or was each of your clip's timecode reset to zero?
More specifically, there are hopefully new users of Sony's NX5U out there shooting AVCHD with a choice of two modes...PCM audio or Dolby audio. Have you been able to successfully transcode to Pro Res in each instance while still retaining camera timecode?
This can be a dealbreaker for someone like myself who works with a lot of documentary footage and is potentially a buyer of the new Sony camera. If I discover that virtually no one can get AVCHD successfully converted to ProRes with original timecode, it may tilt me to buying the EX-1 whose co-dec is a native one for Final Cut.

I don't know about this camera but most AVCHD do not record continuous timecode but only record timecode on each clip starting at zero. If you set I/O in the L&T window the timecode portion selected in that clip will transfer to FCP.

DNG converter question

I apologize for asking this question in this forum. But the DNG forum is not very active it seems. I have seen this problem mentioned in the past, but paid no attention to it and I can't find any of the references. I have no convert button on my DNG converter dialogue. Windows 7, DNG converter 8.4, 8 GB RAM. I have used this utility in the past without problems. I don't use it very often but was experimenting this morning

I posted a similar question quite a while ago, and what I learned was that Bridge has a DNG converter built in, but it's using ACR to read the file before it can convert. So you need ACR support for your camera.
AFAIK there's no way to point Bridge to a standalone DNG converter.
I suggested an updateable DNG converter plugin for Bridge, don't know why nobody listened...I thought it was an excellent idea
As for the metadata, you just have to try. I don't know if it can write metadata when it can't read the file.

GREAT! I want to mimic this workflow!!! I have a completed project that was edited as above in FCP (based on your creative cow video tutorial). I shot with the HVX200.

1b. Why not 1280X720? The original .mxf. Seems like that would provide better resolution . What am i missing?
2. Any Artifacting/aliasing? How did titles and transitions hold up? Did the reds bleed?

Absolutely. It looks great. But, this is HDCAM, so it is anamorphic HD...1440x1080. Since DVCPRO HD is anamorphic as well...it all works out.

The network delivery specs require a 1080p 23.98 master on HDCAM or D5. They chose that because you can convert that into anything.

No artifacting or aliasing whatsoever. Titles and transitions all held up. No bleeding in the reds.

ProRES...that will come with FCP 6. I'll be playing with that codec when I get my hands on it.

It was really VERY simple. The Kona 3 has an option in the Kona control panel to cross convert 720p to 1080p. We chose that. Then we blacked the first 3 min of the tape, then used EDIT TO TAPE to output. The card did everything. Not sure about the model of the VTR...it was the Sony HDCAM deck (not HDCAM SR).

I don't know if any of the Blackmagic cards can cross convert. You'll have to ask them.

Also, how did we deal with our downconverted masters we were also required to deliver. While the network wants an HD master, they don't air HD. They air in SD from a digitbeta master. We had to do a separate output to digibeta with all the graphics properly sized for letterbox output.

AVI to AVCHD convert

Hello All,
I would like to use Elements to convert very large AVI clips to the smaller AVCHD clips. But I don't want to do them one at a time. Is there a way to mantain the clips and save all the AVI clips to AVCHD clips with elements?

Before I moved to PRE I was using "Magix Movies on DVD'". I kept it installed for a few nice features that PRE doesn't have:
Batch Processing
Saving each object as a single clip (i.e. I use its splitter tool to make multiple scenes - I can then save each scene (losslessly if to same format) to a separate file. This saves me all the hassle of using PRE one segment at a time with the Work Area Bar (so tedious !).
The version I use was v7, bundled with the Magix Rescue you Videotapes v1. It has some nice features - including several from their Audio Cleaning Lab product (an amazingly cheap but essential product for cleaning audio tracks for your projects).
There are a shedload of other conversion programs around. For example I have the following installed:

DNG converter questions

1. What is the recommended way to store images? Convert all to dng and discard the camera raw or keep both? If keep both I double my storage needs.
2. Under preferences there is a compression selection. I know it says lossless but is it really, and do many people use it?
3. Are there any other advantages to using dng over raw within the editing process?

1. If you are going to convert to DNG, you should keep the original raw images. Not all raw converters are capable of editing DNG files. As far as storage space is concerned, burn the original raw images to a DVD, or get an external hard drive. After a while you might realize that all your images are not needed.
2. If there is any loss of quality, I will be surprised if you will be able to actually see it. As far as I'm concerned, it is truly lossless. In my opinion most images are not so unbelievably priceless and irreplaceable that this should be of any concern whatsoever.
3. "Other" advantages? Is there really an advantage at all in the first place? That is my question. With my camera there is no reduction in the size of the image in DNG format. If you are using Camera Raw you don't have to concern yourself with XMP files because all the changes are stored within the DNG itself. But in Lightroom that isn't a concern because you only have XMP files if you specifically want them. So, I guess the real question for you is, is there ANY advantage to using DNG? Personally, I don't see any real advantage to converting.

CS5.5 Question (I'm on trial and this feature isn't available). 1080 60p AVCHD Export Question

I just bought a Sony AVCHD camcorder that shoots in 60p. The files play great on my mac (VLC) and wonderfully on my PS3. I also like the 5.1 sound it produces.
I would like to be able to edit the video, crop, transitions, etc. then export to the same format it was originally shot in. 1080 60p AVCHD with 5.1 dolby.
The AVCHD export option isn't available in the trial version. Here are the questions:
#1 is what I am wanting to do possible? Specifically the 60p part of it.
#2 Is there another mac option?
