AVCHD corrupt folder structure? crashes iMovie 9 ... repair?

Hi,
I shot almost 300 clips with a Canon HF11 a while ago. Tried importing to iMovie 9 (latest update) and crashed every time I mounted the camera.
The clips play fine in the camera's internal memory, I backed them up. In fact, I returned the HF11 and bought an HF20 and dragged/dropped the AVCHD folder onto the HF20 and they play fine internally too...
Also crash my iMovie when I mount the camera though... no chance of importing the clips to the library.
Some people told me the AVCHD folder is corrupt, maybe I pushed record again too fast before the camera could have processed one of the clips, etc.
I have done a few test shots after cleaning the internal memory and guess what? The new files import very easily, plug and import...
So, is there a way to FIX/REPAIR/REBUILD the data on the AVCHD folder so I can import to iMovie with all clip data, etc.? I know I can convert to AIC with Toast Titanium... but that would mean losing the metadata (dates in which each clip was recorded)...
Thanks...

You might try Voltaic HD to see if it can read and convrt the files to Apple Intermediate Codec.
After you have salvaged your files, reformat your camera's hard drive using the controls on the camera.

  • Corrupted folder structure

I am using my TimeCapsule to store the backup but also to store iTunes/iPhoto libaries. This was adviced by AppleStore to have this setup with a MacBook Air. And was working perfectly till today.
After tranferring a move to iTunes the connection was lost and both iTunes as iPhone libaries are corrupted on the TimeCapsule.
Folders are shortly shown and disappear again.
If I open these folders in Terminal and perform an ls -al a message is shown:
ls: .DS_Store: No such file or directory
ls: Music: No such file or directory
    Same for the iPhoto folder
ls: .localized: No such file or directory
ls: iPhoto-bibliotheek: No such file or directory
Can anybody suggest how this can be repaired?

This is really serious.. and it is impossible to repair the library in its current situation.
Sorry but I think the Apple store people are simply wrong.. iphoto is not reliable on a network drive.. what has happened is standard problem. Check in the iphoto discussion area.
What is worse is I guess you have no backup.. completely defeating the whole point of the TC.
What I would do is remove the hard disk from the TC.
This will void warranty but you have no choice.
Plug it into a usb to sata cradle and plug into a computer. You can then use disk utility to attempt to repair the library.
A half way between that.. you might try a full archive of the TC.. the option is in the airport utility latest versions.. you will need a 2TB (or 3TB) USB drive plugged into the TC and it might do a straight copy even if the library is corrupted. Normally corrupted files will not copy but a direct transfer might not care.

  • Sony HDR-CX6 AVCHD/Memory Stick Camcorder Crashes iMovie

Has anyone had any luck importing HD footage from a Sony HDR-CX6?
iMove recognizes the camera and imports SD footage fine, but it crashes when I try to import HD.
I can see & play the HD footage from the camera - just not import.
Also, I have to delete any SD footage if I want it to see the HD stuff.

Ok, I have it working now!
I saw a few people suggesting perian was causing problems with other cameras so I removed it and it worked. Don't just disable in the prefs, had to search for perian.component and remove it manually.
Thought I'd post the solution incase anyone else is having trouble.
Btw, this is the UK model of the camera - I know someone was looking for a UK camera that is supported, so I can confirm this is (and video looks great).

  • WEIRD! AVCHD folder structure saved on HD appears different in Mountain Lion?

I saved all my old SD card contents fully onto an external hard drive.
Since saving I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
Today I opened  the saved SD cards to find that the folder structure had altered dramatically.
It appears to be simplified and the "Private" folder is no longer a folder but a QT type file which when double-clicked opens in QT Player.
All the clips appear to be there and capable of being used but everything is drastically different.
Any idea what has happened  .  .  .  .  is it ML related?

There seems to be no way of importing AVCHD video without copying it.
When it's in the camera you need to copy it but if it's stored on a HD there is no need but you are given no choice.

  • How to rescue MTS files with no AVCHD folder structure?

Occasionally friends ask me for help with  AVCHD cameras but as I have not yet got one I have to rely on what I read on the forums.
I have experimented with AVCHD clips  from the DVD accompanying Tom's FCE 4 Editing Workshop book and have a couple of questions.
    1. From my tests it appears that the whole folder structure is not necessary. Just having the BDMV folder and all its contents appears to be sufficient for FCE 4 to recognise and convert the files. Is this correct?
    2. People who accidentally destroy the folder structure and just save the MTS files find that FCE cannot recognise them.
I have found that RevolverHD and VLC can both play the basic MTS but only VLC can transcode them and that is only to a limited number of codecs. However, once transcoded the files could then be put into Streamclip and converted to AIC.
Rather a complex and potentially degrading process.
So what other apps would be better to use for converting MTS to AIC or ProRes?

Let's sort through a few things. Yes, only the BDMV folder is needed, but you need the whole folder, in which case you may as well have all the metadata and take the whole folder structure for archiving.
1440x1080 does not need to be converted to 1920x1080. 1440x1080 is anamorphic AVCHD and is included in the AVCHD specification. In fact there is a 1440x1080 preset in FCE and that's all you have to use. The media is anamorphic, and it displays in normal 16:9 widescreen as 1920x1080.
The same clip when simply rewrapped as an H.264 changed from 23.5MB to 31.4MB.
This appears to be because it was automatically given extra pixels to stretch it out to 1920x1080.
The file size difference is not the pixel size. If the media is 1440x1080 H.264 mts rewrapped to QuickTime the file will be larger because the QT file structure. It will still be H.264 1440x1080.

  • Working with raw .MTS files, no AVCHD folder structure

Hi, I've backed up raw .MTS files to Blu-ray data discs, just the files not the AVCHD folder structures.
I've read about this and everyone says it's not the right way of doing things, that it requires the entire ACVHD folder structure to function.
However when I load these files back onto my Mac from the discs they import just fine into FCPX 10.1.1 natively or optimized. I've had no issues with it at all so why are people so against that way of doing things?
    Just curious.

Can you explain why they would have gone through multiple generations of compression?
Your camera(s) shot in a certain format. It could use any of a number of codecs – including variants of MPEG2, H.264, whatever. So you import that into FCP and edit – either natively or in optimized. Then you export. When you export, it recompresses – in this case to a fairly high bit rate version of H,264. But to be clear, it always recompresses – even if your camera used H,264 to acquire the media, and you don't optimize, it will recompress in exporting to Blu Ray specs. Inevitably, there is some loss of infomation. It may or may not be a detectable loss.

  • Saving folder structure after having to rebuild iPhoto library?

After my iPhoto library crashed I recreated it (by creating a "new" iPhoto library) and managed to save all pictures. However, the previously created folder structure is gone. Is there a way to get it back? It looks like it still technically exists in the original library but I can't access it, because iPhoto crashes everytime I try to open that one.
    Thanks!

Did you try repair the old library?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Missing folder structure in zip file from Theme Editor

    Hi all gurus!
I have an interesting problem with this background: I want to change the customer brand image in the portal header and do som other modifications. For this reason I have made a copy of one of the standard portal themes, as I'm supposed to do, and I have downloaded that zip file from the portal.
When unzip this file i get the following files: its.zip, log.html, metadata.properties, portal.zip and upgrade.xml. As I have understood it that is the correct content. Now I'm supposed to unzip the file "portal.zip" and reach amongst other folders the one named "prtl". In this one there is a folder named "images" and under that one is "header" found and in THAT folder the change of picture is done.
Now for the problem: when I unzip "portal.zip" I just get the content of some property file, NO folders what so ever! If I try to unzip "its.zip" I can see the folder structure under that folder!
If I open the structure with Total Commander I can see the missing folders! But I can't do the copying of the image, the whole structre gets duplicated when I save! I thought the zip file was corrupt so I made another copy and downloaded it but with the same result!
Has anyone had the same problem???
    Best regards
    Benny Lange

Problem solved! By 7-zip. It was actually XP's integrated zip tool that just didn't show the underlaying structure. And Total Commander also did the work if used in the same way as 7-zip, but to edit the second level zip file directly did not work as TC opened that file in a temp directory instead of continuing at the level of the first zip file. That kind of editing directly in a file two zip levels down actually worked in TC 6.x but now I have 7.05 and perhaps things has changed.

  • IPhoto 09 folder structure bug

Let me start by saying that I am a big Apple fan. I have a Macbook Pro (end 2006) running 10.6 with a 30 inch Cinema Display, a 23 inch iMac (mid 2007), and an iPhone 3G and a Nano 5th G. I am an Apple Certified Systems Administrator and was also the first person in Japan to be certified on OS X 10.5 as an Apple Certified Support Professional, however I am primarily an Windows Active Directory/Exchange Server engineer.
I have been using iPhoto since version 06 (end of 2006). I upgraded to 08 as soon as it was released then last year I upgraded to 09. Until recently I had about 18,000 photos in my iPhoto library, but due to the issue listed below I have now switched to Windows Live Photo Gallery on Windows 7 for managing my photos (these are synced using Windows Live Sync to my Mac's Photo folder where I then use Picasa for Mac. Sounds complicated but actually not and it means I can import my photos on my Mac or PC and they are synced both ways. Anyway...
I posted the following Bug Report to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
If you use iPhoto and don't want to spend days/weeks fixing your folder names and reorganizing photos into correct folders if your library becomes corrupt or you ever want to move your photos out of iPhoto then please provide feedback to Apple so that they know that we are not happy about this.
    Bug Report.
The problem with iPhoto 09 is that the the folder structure inside the iPhoto Library package no longer matches the event names in iPhoto.
Previously in iPhoto 08, when renaming an event in iPhoto the folder structure would also be updated. Additionally splitting or merging events would move the files in the iPhoto Library package's folder structure. This is a major problem for me and many other users on the Apple.com iPhoto 09 discussion forums, and this issue has existed since the beginning of 2009!
I need my photo's folders named correctly for the following reasons:
1). Incase I should ever need to move photos out of iPhoto and to another application or platform, I would' have to spend days or even weeks renaming all the folders.
2). If my iPhoto library ever become corrupt and I needed to recreate it then I would loose ALL my event names (hence the details) if iPhoto doesn't keep the folder names the same as the events.
I have recently spent many hours migrating my photos out of iPhoto and renaming the folders manually. iPhoto really was all I ever needed in a photo management application but with this underling bug/issue I can't trust all my photos to it's library format of storage, but I do hope this gets fixed so that I can migrate back to iPhoto in the near future. Might I suggest that the best way forward for the future would be change iPhoto so that it can monitor folders (the same way Picasa does so, this is open and then gives customers the choice of using multiple apps for accessing their photos).
    Regards,
    Andrew

A bug can be an error or fault in the software but it can also be a design flaw which IMO this is.
No it can't. A design flaw is just that. A bug is when the software fails to works as designed. iPhoto is working as designed. You may prefer it work another way, but that's your preference. Remember you can always use a different product for managing your photos. You're not required to use iPhoto, you know.
Exporting dumps all the photos into a single folder which again doesn't solve either points 1 or 2 that I made.
Yes - if you export the entire Library at once.
If, however, you export each Event in turn (an process that can be automated with either Automator or AppleScript) then it will export to appropriately named folders.
And, as to any issue of corruption, the simple fact is that backing up is the ultimate protection.
What you want will possibly preserve your Event names. But that's all. It won't preserve albums, slideshows, metadata, the relationship between original and modified versions, the non-destructive editing and so on and so forth. All you'll get will be some folder names.
Now that's both your points answered. For the second time.
I'm not sure why there are so many Apple apologists on these forums.
I see, so someone who explains to you that you have misunderstood something, explains to you a better way of doing what you want to do is an "apologist"? Just like your definition of "bug" it's a mite idiosyncratic. And rude.
I am pretty sure that at some point there will be many users who will want to migrate out of iPhoto and when they do they won't be very happy when they realize that they are locked in.
Nobody, I repeat nobody, is locked into iPhoto. That statement is a falsehood. File -> Export and off you go.
we can either sit back and just accept these limitations, anti-competative vender lockins and design flaws or we can voice our concerns to Apple and get things changed for the better of everyone.
Every software has limitations. What you have failed to show is that any of the matters that concern you are actually "limitations". There are no
anti-competative (sic) vender (sic) lockins (sic)
iPhoto works with entirely standard formats. All your files and metadata are easily accessible throughout the OS and can be easily exported.

  • Finder File Structure of iMovie 08

Is there any documentation on the Finder file structure that iMovie 08 uses for Events and Projects?
While trying to move files to an external hard drive because the start-up disk was getting full, my father messed up his iMovie 08 files. I recombined all of them back into one Movie Events folder and one Movie Projects folder (both within one Movies folder), but when viewed in iMovie 08, some events are out of date order, plus a few other issues.

Apple is a lil' shy in publishing details ..
probably, as a registered Apple Developer, in the Developer boards and papers you'll find some.
transferring Events and Projects OUTSIDE iM08 is never a good idea.. there're some internal links, which get broken..

What file do I play on my computer in a AVCHD disk folder created with premier elements 12?

Just in case note...the DVD-VIDEO folders/files structure is different from that of the AVCHD format.

    VIDEO_TS Folder
and your menus are typically found in VTS_01_0.VOB file in the VIDEO_TS Folder

If you want a single file (not yet on a disc) that will play back your Premiere Elements export, then I think you need a consider disc image file (.iso or .vdd).

If you take the BDMV Folder from the Premiere Elements AVCHD (with menus) burn to folder into a 3rd party software like ImgBurn, you can put the BDMV Folder on a DVD or Blu-ray disc (to get BDMV Folder and an added CERTIFICATE Folder) and play that back with menus on a Blu-ray player that supports those formats on a supported disc type.

I have never gotten the VIDEO_TS.VOB file (standalone file) in the VIDEO_TS Folder to playback with a computer player or any other. So, please explain how you have accomplished this, including the player name and whether standalone or computer.
Please review. If you need clarification on anything written, please do not hesitate to ask. The situation above is my take on the matter.

When exporting a project with albums the result is a folder structure that matches (the project is at the root with multiple dirs underneath that correspond to the albums). Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can connect the two computers so that the iPhoto Library on each can be accessed by the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager (residing on one of the two Macs) and then copy the albums or events, including keywords, descriptions and titles from the laptop library to the desktop Mac.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>

  • Preserving Folder Structure when Exporting?--A question

A very simple need that I have: I have a Folder in IPhoto on my laptop, left over from a recent trip. The Folder is organized into ten "Albums, which are trip segments. All I want to do is to Export [or Copy] this Folder on an external hard drive, for security purposes and to Import the Folder [and Albums] into IPhoto on my primary desktop computer.
I can export all the contents of the Folder, but I have struggled to find a way to do this that preserves the organization of the Albums inside the Folder. What I end up with is all 652 photos [in this example] in one huge sequential order.
Please advise what I can do to export and maintain the Folder structure. Thanks!!
