AVCHD editing in Final Cut Studio 2 vs. HDV?  Which workflow is smoother?

How is AVCHD editing in Final Cut Studio 2 compared to HDV?
I am in the process of buying a new camcorder.
Thinking about the Canon HV30, but I am considering AVCHD and the HG 10 or HF 10.
I just heard that AVCHD is tough to edit... Is this true?
I have a 24" iMac 2.8GHz Extreme Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb RAM, and I wonder if that would be enough horsepower to edit AVCHD. I also have a 1 terabyte Raid for storage.
I love the idea of being able to just transfer over clips rather than Log and Capturing through an entire dv tape, but is the workflow of AVCHD more work in the long run.
I am more concerned with workflow than even picture quality.
I have so far only worked in SD... so any thoughts from people with hands on experience and can give a good comparison of the two workflows would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

AVCHD isnt any harder to edit then HDV. We are running the SONY EX1 which is Sold State Camera. You have to use Sony XDCam Transfer software to get it into FCP.
Here is what we found.
AVCHD is a lot faster to ingest (ive found 4x realtime) and because you have to use the Sony XDcam Software for transfers you end up with better Loggin metadata (mostly because its easier at the time of transfer)
AVCHD is more expensive to run currently. With 16GB cards giving you 57 minutes of video they cost about 400 Pounds a card (im in the UK). On the plus side is you can view your footage instantly with a MacBooK Pro using the ExpressCard slot to plugin your solid state card and XDcam Viewer software.
Backup can be done in one of to ways. Use a SONY XDCam deck and store the footage on their XDCam Cartridges (way too expensive option). or use external Hardisk (we use 2 one for storage on location and second for Backup and later on for long term Storage in our Library).
When it comes to HDV we use the HDV-Z1 cameras and the process with the Z1 is just the same as with a consumer Level DV camera. It takes longer to ingest video because its realtime. But once in it runs fine. For backup its already done by the tape and again we store all Footage on Harddisk for long term storage once the project is done with the Tapes as backups. Oh.. and also the tapes are really cheap compared to the Solid state cards.
I have to say i was happy with AVCHD at first because the initial setup was very expensive. BUt once setup the workflow is smoother and faster the HDV tape based system. I do find the quality to be better as well on AVCHD.
I hope that helps

  • G5 Power PC vs Imac...which is better for editing with final cut studio 2?

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
I would be so appreciative of any opinions regarding this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bill

Save your pennies and look for a refurbished or used MacPro. Early 2008 or newer 8 core machines w/8GB of RAM running 4 instances in QMaster will chew through material.
Beyond running compressor, it is just a better all round machine for editing video.
    • it has multiple internal drive bays which run via SATA connections - much faster than the FW800 limits of the iMac for external drives
    • it has 3 slots which give you the option of an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox so that you can actually monitor your video properly as well as ingest high end formats
    • the slots give you the ability to connect esata raids for even higher data speeds
    • you have much greater flexibility with computer monitors
    • you have much greater RAM capacity
    and so on ...

  • Help please importing mpeg files to be edited with Final Cut Studio

Hey everyone, new to the video editing thing. I have a JVC GY-HM100U Pro HD camcorder and a MacBook Pro 5,1 with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB 1067 MHz DPR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M & NVIDIA GeForce 9600MGT running OSX 10.5.8. Have recorded footage in mpeg4 and want to now edit using Final Cut Pro 7. Have downloaded Quicktime Pro and am still getting a "the movie could not be opened when trying to import the mp4 file. The movie contains some invalid data" window when trying to open the mpeg4 file. I have also downloaded DivX, FF Player, & Handbrake if these help convert to another supported file format. Please help!

That camera is promoted on the JVC website as being Final Cut Pro compatible.
Have you tried to import the clips via Log & Transfer?
You might also want to read up on the [workflow for that type of camera|http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/professionalformatsandwork flows/#chapter=6%26section=0].
    Have downloaded Quicktime Pro....
QuickTime Pro is installed automaticallly with Final Cut Studio. No need to buy it again.
I have also downloaded DivX, FF Player, & Handbrake...
That software is all pretty much useless for working with Final Cut Studio.
MPEG Streamclip is free and much better.

  • Upgrading från Final Cut Studio 5.1 retail - which upgrade should I buy?

Some year ago I opted for the fulfil upgrade to the cross-platform version.
Now I have the package Final Cut Studio 5.1 retail, with serial numbers. It has DVDSP4, FCP, Motion, LiveType, SoundTrack Pro, etc.
There are two different upgrade packages to Final Cut Studio 2.
One costs 499, the other 699. Which one should I buy?

Yeah, I thought so too. But better safe than sorry and ask here first.
    Thank you!

  • Multi Clip editing problems -Final Cut Studio 2.0

When I have the split screen for the two video tracks I'm editing in the left box and I select either number one or number two,to become the msster, the master video screen on the rightside of my monitor turns green snd the picture becomes fragmented. This phenomena seems to occur on a random basis with either subclip. The program will quit within a minute or two after this occurs. I've reinstalled the system, reinstalled the program with no luck. Everything works up to the point when I merge the two subclips into a master clip.

What format are you editing? AND what do you mean it all works until you merge subclips into a master clip? Are you talking about making a multiclip? Also post what system you're running i.e. Mac? Drives? Graphics card? OS and version of QT?

  • Final Cut Studio is crashing a lot using a Mac Pro (nehalem) 2009

    Greetings,
I have a video workstation based on a Mac Pro (2x2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Nehalem, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB HD, 512 NVIDEA VRAM) with a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme 2009 and an Highpoint RocketRAID 4322 card (properly connected to a RAID 5 array).
I'm editing, with Final Cut Studio 3, a big TV project with some TGA and loads of HD XDCAM EX 35mbs video footage.
    *What is happening wrong?*
Final Cut Pro is crashing to many times and dont let me work with the flow that is supposed. I start to work and i do a bit of scrubbing in the timeline and suddenly the rainbow spyral starts to spin and kaput! FCP just crashes.
I've tried to many things. Re-installing everything from the baseline, plug out the 2 PCIe cards (and not even the drivers are installed). Even so FCP still crashes with the project.
Funny thing is... This symptom only happens with the Nehalem Mac Pro. I have another station based on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon 3 GB RAM 2006 and when i run the project... everything works fine. FCP here doesn't crash.
This is what makes me believe that the problem must be with the new Mac Pro.
I have the reports generated by the FCP after the crash. You can find it here:
    http://www.ideiascompernas.com/reports/
I'm getting frustrated because i've invested big in this workstation, safe in the knowledge that it was going to be stable to complete my requirements.
Is there anything that i or Apple can do to resolve my problem. Is it the processor? Extended Hardware Test says that everything is ok.
    I'll be waiting,
    best regards, thanks,
    Pedro

I see you have the GT120, not a very nice card really but maybe it is 'enough.' I'd upgrade. To ATI Radeon 4870, once you get it stable and working.

I see your crash is kernel panic actually.
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
    Crashed Thread: 194
Almost always that is memory related, are you seeing parity errors?
Watch System Profile - Memory tab
Replace the RAM (I'd even up it to more memory, 6 x 2GB is what I would have configured for)
Have you tested your RAM? run Apple Hardware Test?
Disabled ALL USB and Firewire devices?
Is the RR4322 okay to run in slot #2 (16x) rather than in slot 3 or 4 (4x)?
Getting RAM replaced, advanced exchange, or go out and getting some Kingston or Crucial etc for your system, and swapping, really is one good method, trial and error, to find the cultprit or rule out RAM.
Errors like this can mean flushing your caches is a must, and possibly due to errors and crashes, clean system install, checking data (both time consuming) and being careful to recheck your drives with Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro 5 to insure there are not any corrupt files (not perfect either which is why restore the system from known good backup image can be a must).

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and avc-intra

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 and am having trouble with .mxf files. I downloaded the avc-intra decoder drive from Panasonics site and a majority of the files ended 3/4 of the way through with sever audio noise at the end. I sent the drive back to the cameraman to see if he had better luck, turns out he did... Though I saw that he was using Final Cut Studio 3 and the quicktime files he provided back were formatted as AVC-Intra 100M...which is neither playable in quicktime or editable in Final Cut Studio 2.
What am I missing? Time to upgrade? What can I do in the meantime.
    Thanks for the ideas!

Well, you can't use the file he sent unless you upgrade. But if you get the card dumps back, you should be able to LOG AND TRANSFER to ProRes on your system fine. Or was that the issue? They had garbage at the end?
Trashing preferences fixes a lot of FCP oddities.

  • Final Cut Studio on Intel PowerMacs?

I am planning on eventually upgrading to a top of the line PowerMac for editing using Final Cut Studio (which I currently own and run on my PowerBook), but I have a few questions that I need to figure out before making a decision on what to get and when to get it.
So I know all this is a little ways off, but soon enough, Apple PowerMacs will be running on Intel processors. Does anyone know if they will be fully capable of running the current version of Final Cut Studio (which is made for the PowerPC processor) and how much slower it would be, since it would be run using Rosetta? When Apple releases the Intel PowerMac, do you think it would be better to get the older generation Quad G5 or the newer and supposedly much faster Intel PowerMac, which would have to run Final Cut Studio through Rosetta, which would slow it down (if it indeed can run the app). Thanks a lot for the input.
    15" PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

As I understand it, Apple has since OS X created versions of all its applications for both Intel and PowerPC.
Perhaps not all its system levels, but its pro apps.
Remember that Apple bought Final Cut Pro (nee Final Cut) from Macromedia, where the program, originally developed for PC and at one time earmarked to be the front-end editing software for Media 100 on the PC, was being developed by Randy Ubillos.
It was originally called "Key Grip."

  • Can I install Final Cut Studio 3.0 after already having FCP X?

I have already installed FCP X on one of my computers.  I need to install Final Cut Studio 3.0 on the same computer now.
When I tried to install, I get the selection screen and Final Cut is ghosted out and unavailable.
Is there a way around this?  I know FCP X can co-exist with Final Cut Studio 3.0 if it's installed afterward, but I need to know if I can install Final Cut Studio after FCP X which I imagine is a fairly rare situation.
I'm on Lion -- in case that matters.
    _Matt_

I'm not positive, but I believe that FCPX installer is aware of FCS. If you intsall FCPX and FCS is already on your computer, the FCPX installer will move FCS into a folder inside Applications. I'm sure FCS installer is not aware of the existance of FCPX.
I would guess that you would have to uninstall FCPX, install FCS and then, if you wanted, re-install FCPX, using the App Store.
I have not actually done this, but I'm guessing that having FCPX already on your computer is what's causing issues with the FCS installer.

  • I Can't install my NEW Final Cut Studio 2

I Can't install my NEW Final Cut Studio 2;During the initial installation process the applications are dimmed and it tells me that I have to upgrade the previous version, but my "previous" version is Final Cut Studio "ACADEMIC" (FCP 5) which doesn't allow upgrades!. When I enter the previous version's serial # it refuses it and the serial # of the new one doesn't allow me to install. I paid full price for the new FCS2 because I am not elegible to upgrade from an "academic" version... Anyone with a solution... Urgent. I am to start a new project/new client on Monday am
    thanks in advance

Did you uninstall the 1st version with AppZapper? Gotta be some registry type files still lingering around.
    Thanks for your response.
I installed using the conventional DVD's sent by Apple. I installed them on my previous computer a MacBook Pro and it was copied with the rest of its contents when upgrading to my new MacPro.

  • Trying to install Final Cut Studio on my Lion Notebook

    Hey guys,
I bought a MacBook Pro with Lion on it but I can't seem to install Final Cut Studio 2 without Rosetta.  I have the Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade discs which are universal but I cant install FCS3 without first installing FCS2.  Anyone have any ideas?

    > Will I run into any issues if I install Final Cut Studio 3 to run in conjunction with Final Cut X?<
That's been a running topic and I've found the posted discussions to be mutually exclusive. Maybe it depends on the hardware platform. Dunno. Might search the FCPX forum too.
Please post back if you figure it out with your own experiences.

  • How many disks come with Final Cut Studio?

Sounds like a funny question, but somebody gave me these disks and I just want to know if I have them all before I install, and is there any sequence to the installation?
    Thanks.

It is indeed a strange question and you were extremely lucky to be given $1,000 worth of DVDs.
There are 7 discs in FCS 3 and you start off with the Final Cut Studio Install Disc, with which you configure the installation process.
During the installation process you will be informed when to use the others.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Sony SR1e | AVCHD Format

    Hi,
I'am new to this forum and can't find any useful information regarding the support of the AVCHD-Format used by Sony's SR1e.
So does the latest Final Cut Studio 2 support the .mts AVCHD Format by the SR1E?
I see Sony in the partner list, but the cam is not on the device list.
I found some scripting and complicated ways to convert the .mts to mpeg, but maybe there is a smarter solution out there?
Or is it really true, that I have to use the Nero Burning Application on Windows to convert the AVCHD's instead of the latest Final Cut Studio editing software?
btw: Squared 5's Streamclip Software is not able to convert the .mts files.

Not sure about FCS2 but you do have options with a capture card and bring in to FC in many different codecs. Depending on your computer you could use a Black Magic Intensity card for the all digital HDMI port on this camera and bring it in as DVC PRO HD and edit in an all digital all I frame codec. Even if Apple comes out with support for this AVCHD you may still want to avoid it as most HDV shooter/editors do.

  • Which codec to use for editing AND motion graphics (ala Final Cut Studio)?

I have a prosumer-level AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM700) and am working with Final Cut Studio. After doing a great deal of research it appears that there is NO real benefit to using any codec other than ProRes 422 for straight editing (a camera at this price point doesn't shoot images of a high enough quality to warrant using 422 HQ, which also requires more processor power, and not only does 4444 require rendering it also takes up a ton of space). However, I have read (many times) that there may be some benefit to using 422 HQ if I am doing motion graphics work (ala Motion 4). Can anyone verify this? Would it make any discernible difference when shooting with a camera like this? Even though it is a prosumer camcorder I am trying to squeeze as much value as I can out of the entire production.
    Any input or advice?
    Thanks!

  • I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro?

I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro? If so, which Compressor codec is best to use in order to preserve the original 720/60p?   How do I maintain the highest quality?

No...ProRes is a high quality format. Finishing format.  Many TV networks take that as a final deliverable.
BUT...DVDs aren't high definition...they are SD.  You cannot make a 720p60 DVD with DVD Studio Pro.  Any DVD you make will be SD...720x480.  The only HD DVD format out there is BluRay, and for that you need a BluRay burner.
As for making a high quality DVD...using the BEST QUALITY settings in Compressor will work:
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it and select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the browser and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.
