AVCHD files, Premiere Elements 10, and a Mac - will it work?

Hi all,
I just bought a Sony HDR-CX220 camcorder (for simple home-movie stuff).  I've been working with Premiere Elements 10 with my Canon DSLR and other camcorders, but not HD camcorders.
I just found out there might be a problem.  Can I import the AVCHD 2.0 files (1920 x 1080 60p) into PE 10, work with them, and then export in an HD file (either MP4 or blu-ray)?
Did I just make a mistake buying this camera?
(I have a MacBook Pro 2010 with Mountain Lion and all updates.)
Thank you for any and all help.  I'm literate at computers and still photography, but I have a hard time with video, so go easy on me!

My real "video world" started with a Panasonic camcorder that records AVCHD 1080p60 on an SD card.  My first computer for video had an i5 and 8GB memory.  It was a little slow with the big files so I upgraded to i7, 16GB, SSD, Nvidia card and Blu-Ray burner.  So my real world has never experienced DV, Mini DV, tape or firewire capture.  I've added two more amazing camera/camcorders and mix the clips routinely in PrE11.
I enjoy reading lots of reviews and keep up on a couple of forums.  I enjoy keeping up on what the consumer electronics industry is doing to find ways to get people to buy their products.  It amazes me that, based on reviews, forums and personal experience the video camera of choice right now is a Panasonic LX7 point-n-shoot that sells for $400.  YouTube and Vimeo examples keep proving nothing can make better picture quality below the $1500 price point.
The "real world" now for video consumers now is making exquisite videos for their HD TVs with $400 cameras and $90 software.   For another $100 you can get a Sony camera that has the 35mm equivalent of a 1,000 mm zoom lens, is stabilzied and takes 1080p60 video of humming birds a long ways away that can be slowed in PrE11 with incredible big screen quality.  This is consumer stuff!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=BVDt8sSyRiE
I inadvertently retired when people stopped buying the expensive toys I was selling.  So, I have had lots of time to figure out what and how to use current "state of the art" consumer grade equipment.  Except once, I have not made a DVD.  (It was for an outdated relative.)
Beyond the narrowly defined range of "current equipment", I can offer little help.  I've learned how to edit losslessly and have made PrE9 and 10 work with AVDHD footage.  Of course, PrE11 is the best.  And yes, it really does, accept unsized RAW photos to mix in with the already mixed video footage from the three cameras.
As I say, my area of knowledge is narrow, but where I can help others, it's fun.  In fact, the most fun is helping the people in far away places that I hope to visit and film!

In case you did not find it, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement on Premiere Elements 19/NVIDIA GeForce
that appears at the top of this forum.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow
glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies
to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of
the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere
Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit).
    First..
    1. Have you updated from 13 to the 13.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update. If not, please do so.
    2. Do the problems exist if you disable the antivirus and firewall(s)?
    3. Are you running the program as Administrator? Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer?
    4. Have you refreshed the Online Services using Premiere Elements Editor Edit Menu/Preferences/Web Sharing?
    5. Have you updated the Adobe Application Manager?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4773
6.Is your video card/graphics card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
    7. Lots more we could go through such as deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if necessary, the whole
13.0 Folder in which it exists.
But, I think that you have enough things going on here to warrant an uninstall, free ccleaner run through (regular cleaner and registry cleaner parts) and then reinstall with the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.

If the problems persist after all that then we will adjust to additional troubleshooting maneuvers.

  • Premiere Elements 12 Crashes on Mac

I have a fairly new Mac with the latest Maverick updates. Premiere Elements 12 crashes randomly when I am working and loses everything. It even loses files from the folder where imported media is stored. It loses saved work as well. I have no idea what to do but I need help fast. And I have tried the uninstall and start over stuff as well as rebooting my computer many times. It doesn't help.

If you use Premiere Elements' Add Media tools to get the video from your Canon camcorder, the video files should come into the program as .mts files and the program will automatically set up your project based on the specs for this video. (Assuming your video is 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 and that one of these clips if the first clip on your timeline.)
I'm not sure how you're getting .mvi files, but if you load .mts files into the program, they will work.
Open a new project and try using Add Media/From Flip and Camera to get the video from your camcorder to your computer, then add one of these clips to your timeline. In Expert view, you should NOT see a yellow orange line along the top of the timeline, above the clip.

  • No sound on imported files premiere elements 12

I had an old version Windows Premiere Elements 2 and I imported the files to Premiere Elements 12....they have come across ok to the Mac, but without sound.  Can I get the sound back please? There is sound on the computer, just not when I playback the files through the organizer.
    Thanks

.Even if we take the Windows versus Mac out of the matter which we really cannot....
You cannot import .prel files into another Premiere Elements project file (project.prel). "Most of the time", you can open a Windows Premiere Elements project file created in an earlier version in a later Windows Premiere Elements version. And, "most of the time", you can open a Mac Premiere Elements project file created in an earlier version in a later Mac Premiere Elements version..But, you cannot open a Windows Premiere Elements project file (project.prel) in a Mac Premiere Elements. And vice versa.
If you have a .mod standard file and are having problems with it in Mac or anywhere else, then try renaming just the file extension from .mod to mpg before importing it into the program. That often works in Windows. Not sure if you would need a special converter for .mod for Mac.
As for prv files...not sure what that is. In Timeline rendering, preview files are generated, but, for SD project, the preview files are DV AVI, and, for HD project, the preview file is MPEG2.mpeg with a companion xmp file. (at least in Windows). The counterpart of DV AVI may be DV.MOV for Mac?
If you have any more details on your situation, please let us know, and I will follow up on your information. What are the file formats/file extensions that seem to be making it into Elements Organizer 12 on Mac? I cannot see how a file with the file extension .prv or .prel could be importing into Elements Organizer 12.

  • Premiere elements 7 and project presets

    Hi,
I have a question regarding quality of edited video and project presets. I use a Panasonic HDS-9 AVCHD camcorder which is set to record at the XA 1920 x 1080 full HD mode. Once the mt2 files are in Premiere I have tried two of the project presets. Full HD 1920 x 1080 5.1 Channel (PAL) and HD 1440 x 1080 5.1 Channel (PAL). I have burnt to folder and then used DVD shrink (no compression settings used) to package it into an iso file so I can use the file with menus on my Freecom media player which attaches to my Panasonic HD ready TV using component jacks. What I have found is that the HD 1440 x 1080 preset appears to produce very slightly better quality. I was not able to explain what the exact difference was until my 7 year old son described the difference as being 'one of them looks more shiny'. What I think is happening is that anything that has movement, however slight, is creating very marginal screen smear which makes that part of the screen seem less clear. It is not bad and had I not tried the 1440 setting I would probably have accepted it. The trouble is I am fussy, and now that I have seen the difference I need to find out what other problems I may run into if I use the lower preset as the information in Premiere seems to suggests that I should be using the Full HD preset if the footage was shot in full HD. Anybody have any thoughts on this or experienced this?
    Thanks
    Lou

"What I have found is that the HD 1440 x 1080 preset appears to produce very slightly better quality" is what you say.
I have sought out your camcorder and checked its specifications and found:
From what I have read and what you have said, it sounds like your Panasonic HDC-HS9 is recording AVCHD (video MPEG-4 AVC/H.264; audio Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound) 1920 x 1080i50 (if you have a PAL version of the camcorder = 25 frames per second or 50 fields per second). At this point, I am not sure if you are recording to the camcorder’s hard drive or to a memory card.
So, I find it appropriate that you select your Premiere Elements project preset (New Project dialog) = PAL AVCHD Full HD1080i25 5.1 channel sound. Typically it is suggested that the project preset be as close as possible to the properties of the imported video to give you the appropriate frame work for editing. This does not prohibit you from making other export choices and downsizing as in this case. Although how well Premiere Elements 7 can downsize is another question. And, I suspect that your imported video has Fields = upper fields first.
If you tell me that you are burning to folder, that means to me that you are creating DVD-VIDEO files (presumed PAL 720 x 576 25 frames per second, with 16:9). And these DVD-VIDEO files would have Fields = lower fields first. And you are going from 1920 x 1080 with square pixels to 720 x 576 with a 16:9 flag. I am thinking Fields issue or 16:9 flag issue. But, then the question comes up, why not for both choices of project preset.
    Here comes my questions.
    1. How repeatable and consistant is this slight difference that you are seeing and relating to the project preset (New Project dialog)?
    2. Are you taking the same video, doing the same edits for the comparison of the project presets of PAL AVCHD Full HD1080i25 5.1 channel and PAL AVCHD HD1080i25 5.1 channel?
    3. I may be overlooking something tonight, but I cannot invoke a scenario to target the project presets unless you are doing something grossly different in the edits or using different videos in the comparison.
Since there is a lot going on after the DVD video files are generated, is there any chance you could do a mini comparison creating menus and burning to DVD in Premiere Elements 7 and determine if this difference exists then?
I need to think on this some more to include some aspects that I did not include here now.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running? I will assume Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit for now.
First try...deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs.

the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives enabled so that you can
    see the complete path cited.
If no success with the above, then...
With video or still in Documents and Premiere Elements opened to the Expert workspace, right click the computer taskbar and select Cascade Windows.
Then drag video or still from Documents into the Premiere Elements Expert workspace Timeline.

  • Premiere elements 10 and viewing video - avi

Hi all, I am completely baffled at the moment. I am running 2 systems, both with adobe premiere elements 10 and full content packs. I have also installed k-lite codecs pack on both machine. One is a dell i5 lptop and the other is an i7 tower. I am editing the same set of videos, I have copied a set to my desktop and have another set on my laptop. The issue is this:
On the laptop I open premiere, get media and select the avi file I want to edit, the file appears and you can see the image of the video file. It is then OK to work from and edit.
On the desktop, I open premiere, get medi and select the avi file I want to edit, the file appears but this time there is no image just the audio sign. I try to put it intot he video timeline but it only imports the audio.
I have been stumped all night. Why will it work on one machine and not the desktop?
Please can someone help me with this?

Thanks for reporting your Premiere Elements 12 and 13 issue and its solution. Great contribution. Was the fix of updating the Adobe Application Manager
applied to just version 13 or to both 12 and 13?
If you work with 12 instead of 13, please update 12 to 12.1 using an opened 12 project's Help Menu/Update.
I ran into a Premiere Elements 12 install/Sign In issue which was also resolved by updating the Adobe Application Manager.

Installing Elements 9 on my Mac Will this duplicate my existing photos on file (65K) ? Or will it use a link to work on the pictures and save only the additions?

I'm not quite sure why you would think that Photoshop Elements would duplicate your existing photos. If you have had Elements 9 installed previously, and have a catalog, the new installation will utilize that catalog. However, Elements isn't going to automatically duplicate all of your images. Images are never actually "in" Elements. Elements simply points to the images wherever they are located on your system.
