AVCHD Files with a Canon VIXIA

Hi Gang
Trying to understand AVCHD (.mts) with a consumer Canon VIXIA and limited equipment: A Mac Mini "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 (Early 2009)
Using 'Wondershare Converter' for PC, the AVCHD files off the Cannon, are unreadable on a Mac 10.6. After converting, the file was imported into FC6 as a  QT file, (1920X1080), but required FULL RENDERING. The subsequent raw HD files, (see the test clips): https://vimeo.com/94284834 were extracted from 2 different older HD cameras and readable as QT directly off those cameras.
Whatever method AVCHD files are converted thru, (for example with ClipWrap), it seems the extra render time is unavoidable. Unless using an intell based Mac Pro Desktop?
With the advent of AVCHD (.mts) progressive piles, the process involves the extra conversion, thus the extra render time.
A 'work-around' with limited equipment, using iMovie 11 does a pretty nice job. Any drawbacks?
Are there 'Other' Pro-sumer Camcorders capable of saving 'QT files' immediately compatible for Mac avoiding the conversions?
BTW - Since there's no option for 'High Profile H.264' in the FC6 drop down, (also as recommended by Vimeo) I tried 'XDCAM' - apologies, the extracted test clip appears stretched.
Thank you!

If you want to work with current cameras, you need to use current tech...more current computers. Now you see the limitations of your workarounds.  Wondershare on PC doesn't convert to FCP editing codecs. And not all QT movies are editable. You've been on these forums for quite some time...you should know this.  Clipwrap will convert to an editing format...ProRes. Do that. If you use the "re-wrap" option...then you'll need to render in FCP.
iMovie...converts to Apple Intermediate Codec, which is a "lossy" format. Lower quality, and lacks things like timecode. A non-professional format. But, if you want to stick with old OLD tech, then you do what you need to do to band-aid your way to making things work.
The only "prosumer" camera that recorded to QT files that FCP could edit right away were JVC cameras:
http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/category.jsp?productId=PRO4.1
FCP 6 doesn't do "High Profile H.264" as that came out far after FCP 6 was introduced.  Again...if you want to work with current formats...deliver current formats...you need current hardware/software.  Adobe Media Encoder will do what you want...but it won't work on your old OS, nor your old Mac.
Sorry.
Get a MacMini...they are cheap, and very capable.  Oh, but then you won't be able to run FCP 6 on that. But FCP 6 doesn't do what you currently need to do either.

  • Will imovie 11 (version 9.0.8) be able to import the MP4 files from the Canon Vixia HF R 400?

I realize the camcorder is just available now but I assume the MP4 files are the same as in the R300 from last year. I just want to be sure that imovie 11 will be able to import andedit the MP4 files from the canon Vixia before I purchase the camera.I understand that imovie has trouble with some MP4 files and works fine with other ones. I don't want to transcode into another format and generate gigantic files of data. I also understand that the videos with AVCHD has better video but I prefer a easier workflow. I imagine one day Apple in it's infinate wisdom will eventually support AVCHD.

    two options:
    • not exhausting - go to
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
these devices are tested by Apple 'bout functioning with iM
    choose one = works. guaranteed.
    • exhausting - learn about codecs, containers, bitrates .....
in short: AVCHD is a standard, details e.g. here at wiki
standard means: some settings are conform, some not. example: no 120fps in AVCHD.
    note: there's vers1 and there's a new vers.2 .......
    mp4 - just a container, or 'wrapper'.
means: like a box of chocolate, you could never know what's inside. example: 120fps in mp4.
    but ........
    AVCHD nor mp4 are 'codecs'.
    here comes h.264 - could be in a AVCHD/mts, could be in a mp4.
    iMovie: respects standards.
    does NOT import non-standards-conform files/videos/datas.
encode a 1080video as 30p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD
    encode a 1080video as 60p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD2 (=not supported by iM11), would 'fit' into mp4 (= iM11 supported) ...
mp4 is more ... 'open minded', more general; lacks therefor stuff like gps location data and other meta-tags.
the next iM13 should support AVCHD2, it's bigger brother FCPX does .....
    last word:
iMovie is NO general 'cuts all movin' pictures'-app!
it is meant for consumer convenience with consumer devices.
=> supports the most 'popular' standards. not anything.

  • How to view original video files from my Canon Vixia

    Hi -
I have a Canon Vixia camcorder and I cannot find a way to view the original mts files on my iMac.  I hate to say this, but my old windows laptop to does this without any issue, so that's what I'll continue to do until something changes.
When I mount the camera on my Mac, it only shows one giant AVCHD file.  I have read the posts about using iMovie to import the AVCHD file and then export the individual clips, but frankly that ***** for a few different reasons that I don't really feel the need to explain.
Why does Mac not allow me to simply view the files as they are on the camera?  I don't edit with iMovie, I edit with Premiere and the original mts files are just fine with me.  I love my iMac and all my other Apple products, but let me view my files! ...please?
    Thanks
    Joey

AVCHD utilizes a proprietary container format. The MTS files are in there, you just have to know where to look.
Navigate to the root directory of the memory card. You should see a rather large (depending on how many clips are on there) file called PRIVATE. You need to right-click that and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file AVCHD, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file BDMV, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the folder STREAM and open it. You should find the MTS files there.

  • Importing and burning mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20

I have the HD camcorder Canon Vixia HF20 (and love it btw). It creates .mts files. I downloaded the software that came with the camcorder for Macs, but it does absolutely nothing for me (as far as I can tell - maybe I am doing something wrong).
I downloaded VLC so I can watch the .mts files and it works great. However, I am completely stuck on how to a) burn them, b) transfer them to a file format that allows me to burn them.
I have a new Mac desktop and am a novice at using it (I've had a laptop for a while before the desktop). Thus, I don't know how to use iMovie. Everything I read says imovie will be able to burn the files. However, when I open iMovie, choose "import," it doesn't allow me to import anything b/c they are in the .mts file format. It's like they are "blacked out" and incapable of being uploaded from my computer's hard drive to it.
So, I'll quit rambling. I've researched this ad nauseum, so any help on how to burn these files would be so greatly appreciated. I do not have File Cut Pro. Thanks!

iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9 can import that file format but only from the camera.
Once you move the files off the camera you'll have to jump through some hoops to convert them.

  • Do I have to use ImageMixerSE with the Canon Vixia HF 10, or is there something newer or better?

I have an old school Canon Vixia HF 10 and it came with the Pixela ImageMIxerSE software which i have update to the most recent version but it is painfully slow even though I am running 16gb of ram with an I7 processor.  Can I use the newer Canon software or is there something else?

You can use any commerical NLE, (non-linear editing) software to transfer your clips, make movies, and burn to disk. My favorite is the Sony Vegas lineup, which starts at $50.00. As the HF 10 uses AVCHD recording format the Movie Studio Platinum with accelerated AVC/H.264 encoding may be best. Often though it is not the software that is slow, rendering takes time.

  • Hi, I need some help. Since I have changed to windows 7 I cannot open raw files with my canon mk 5D. The files will not open in cs4. Can somebody advise me what to do. I have done updates on CS4 and still cannot open the raw files

Can anybody advise me what to do as I am having problems opening raw files on CS4 since I have changed to windows 7. I am using a canon mk 5D.

Actually, you're not.  That's not an accurate description of any of the Canon 5D models.
There are EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mark II, and EOS 5D Mark III models.  Which do you have, specifically?  Details will matter for this.
If you have a 5D Mark III (three) it's too new and you will not be able to directly open files with Photoshop CS4.  You'll either need a newer version of Photoshop or to use the free DNG converter.

  • MXF and AVCHD files with Final Cut

I am looking into buying a new camera and there are 2 file formats that I have never used. MXF and AVCHD. AVCHD I know is not native to final cut. So this would need transcoded to Apple Pro Res. All fine and dandy there. But where I am unsure, is MXF. Can I just import them directly into final cut as if it were a .mov file? Do they need transcoded? Any special plug ins needed?

    Canon's web site says...
The XF100 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper that ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. The codec's 4:2:2 color sampling provides ultra-fine transitions in tone and color for maintaining the highest image quality needed for advanced post production processing.
Since it is not out I guess no one can say how well it will work with FCP although apparently it will ship with something to enable FCP compatibility.

  • Need help transferring files from my canon vixia hg21 to final cut express!

I can't seem to get my camera or its files to show up on the FCE log and transfer window. If anyone knows of a way to get this to work i would greatly appreciate it!!!. also, I have already tried converting files to get them to be an agreeable format for FCE but the end result is always low quality.

    HI -
Log and Transfer only works with HD material, so make sure you shot in the HD mode.
Also, some times if there are multiple file formats on the same camera storage, like HD clips, SD clips and still images, this can prevent Log and Transfer from working properly. If that is the case, see if you can off load and delete all the non-HD material from the camera storage so that only HD material is there.
    Then:
    Open FCE.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Close Log and Transfer and close FCE.
Now connect your camera via USB with the camera on, open FCE and then open Log and Transfer and see if the window populates with clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will FCP X work with the Canon Vixia HF S10 ?

The HF S10 doesn't appear on the compatibility list.  If it currently doesn't, is there a work around to import files?  Thanks.

Hi pleibowitz. If what you are saying is true, and FCPX can only read from a camera and can't read and edit an MTS file that has been, say, archived on a hard drive, then I can't use FCPX. That's really disappointing. I don't want to pay a bunch of money for some software that can't read my video files except from the camera. How do I archive my original footage, then import and use it later?
This is really sad. All I want to do is be able to drag an MTS file from my HD into FCPX and have it let me start editing with out a bunch of conversion, or transcoding, or converting into ProRes. It just eats up too much HD space. I love how FCPX uses the Metadata and imports it all, but come on, can't I use it without?
I can only assume the metadata that FCPX uses in somewhere else on the CF card or Flash HD of the camera.
I guess I'll be sticking with Premiere. It reads AVCHD .mts files beautifully, from anywhere. Very nice. I may not have all the metadata stuff, but at least I can archive and move .mts files around where ever I want with the confidence that I can use them later.

My new canon HF10 uses the new AVCHD format.
Premier cant natively handle this format. Does anyone know a solution?

I've been barking about this for months. I still don't think they have a buy outright fix for this.

  • Not able to open AVCHD file with PS5 extended

I have seen instructions on doing this -simply open the file. But it doesn't specify the file format of the video file. When I attempt to open an avchd video file PS complains that it is not the right file type. My PS5 extended is up to date.
    What am I missing?

    What am I missing?
That this is the most awful workflow imaginable. Use Premiere Pro or another program to edit video. That aside, generally there is no surefire guarantee that this will ever work in PS or even Premiere. Some cameras produce just atrocious "flavors" of this stuff or users screw it up by uzsing recording settings. You may have to run it through a conversion tool like Handbrake therefore. Well, whatever, you did not provide any relevant details, so this is not going anywhere....

  • Capturing AVCHD video from a Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder to FCE 4.01

Video captured at the highest resolution MXP i60 seems to stutter after importing to FCE 4.01. I know that playback on a computer monitor will show these signs but after burning with iDVD and played on a TV set, it still is jerky when panning a moving image.
I've read most of the posts concerning this. I have read that FCE will only accept 29.97 frame rates in several posts and other posts show "i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97 frame rates".
I read where I should reset my FCE preferences but I don't seem to have any. I looked in Library Preferences and could not find a "com.apple.finalcutexpress.plist" or the "final Cut Express User Data" folder.
Sure could use some help from those who use that camcorder and FCE.

I also shoot and edit with the HG21 but haven't experienced any such problems. Do your sequence settings match your clip settings in every regard? You definitely shot in 60i and not 30p? Did you fully render your sequence before exporting?
I've found there's a lot of interlacing when panning quickly, but it hasn't been jerky for me. Does it appear this way on the camera too? It may have been that you did not pan smoothly enough (such as with a good tripod).

As new owner of iMaC and FCE4 and new in video...but"experience photographer" can't figure out how to get the mts. files from my Canon Vixia HF S100 to FCE4 neither from HD previously stored in folders by Canon original import software made the :-{ provided with camcorder.
iMovie can read and open only the mts.files diretly from SDHC card/camera but not from H drive.I was told by Apple sale rep. if I would go with FCE4 it will support mts.and solve my problem but opposite is true so far, reading this forum doesn't help much...cause only solution offered by many is use of another convert soft, with is questionable with lost of HD quality or not,but why ...why this format doesn't work directly with FCE4 ???

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and .mts files

I want to know if I can move an AVCHD .mts file from my Canon Vixia HF S10 camera to my hard drive some place, or archive it, and then drag it into FCPX and start using it.
Or do I have to have it on my camera in order to get footage into FCPX?
I hope not. This is the same problem I had with FCP 6.3. If I moved the .mts files onto my HD, the log and transfer feature of FCP wouldn't recognize the footage. That's pretty stupid I think.
    Any thoughts out there?

I have an HFS100 and yes BUT don't just copy the .mts files.  I copied the whole folder structure across not just the .mts files and started editing right away.
