AVCHD footage and render issues

Hi,
We just started using new AVCHD cams (Panasonic HS250, HS300 and AG70) FCE is Crashing when I first launch the program and call up Log and transfer. I relaunch the program and it works fine for the most part... Also I am having issues with rendering on some projects the program is crashing when the render reaches about 3% completed. I used to have this issue with FCP 3 and rendering. We didn't have this prblem using SD footage or DV footage caputred through firewire. any recoomendations for patches, plug-ins, or fixes for this? Can't go back to DV tape or SD cams so any help would be appreciated!

What Easy Setup did you use when you Log & Transferred the video from the camera(s)? For AVCHD video you should be using one of the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec easy setups.
What is your current Sequence Setting? (Control-click the sequence name in the FCE Browser, then select Item Properties. What does it say for Vid Rate, Frame Size and Compressor?) Do your clips match this?
Are you using the network drive as your FCE scratch disk location?

  • Playback and render issues Premiere Pro CS6 on Mac

I have been having very "skippy" and sluggish issues when it comes to playback and editing. I have deleted all the old render files from my project and my hard drive, but nothing seems to work. Can someone please help me? I'm not sure if it is a space issue or what, but I haven't had much of these problems before. I know it's not a sequence settings issue, so I am very confused. My footage all comes from a Maxell P2 Eseries card and my computer specs are:

  • Round Trip and Render issues - Color back to FCP

Graded, rendered, send to FCP. Looks good on the timeline, minor issues with some variable speed clips and sound (for some unknown reason) but i had duplicated timelines and was able to gather everything onto one timeline and each clip plays back fine, but i can't really get a good read thru, the timeline after about 5-7 secs will start to hold up. I think maybe its having a problem playing back the rendered files off the internal harddrive and the firewire 800 drives I use for capture scratchs. So I export a self-contained movie file and it won't play without stopping in either quicktime or FCP. I can't figure out what the problem may be or how to fix it. My next call is apple support but i figured maybe one of you esteemed gentleman may be able to see the tree in my forest. Thanks, Steve

I see a lot of trees here, so I'll grab my chainsaw and start swinging away
I appreciate that, as here in south louisiana we keep our chainsaws oiled and ready to roll
    Graded, rendered, send to FCP.
I follow you up to this point. I'm assuming you're using XDCAM EX footage?
    Yes
Looks good on the timeline, minor issues with some variable speed clips and sound (for some unknown reason)
I should point out here that it's been documented on numerous occasions in this forum that Color doesn't necessarily play well with variable speed clips. The Color User Manual has a section on page 75 that shares some steps that should be performed before sending a sequence to Color. One of those steps is baking a variable speed clip into a quicktime movie.
Gotcha, I actually did that to solve that issue.
but i had duplicated timelines and was able to gather everything onto one timeline and each clip plays back fine,
Sorry, I can see how this can be confusing. What I meant to say that is when i had the weird audio issue (it sounded as if the stereo pair were out of sync with eachother, giving it a wierd audio reverb even though i could not visually identify from any information available on the timeline) I then overwrote those audio files and that fixed it. But all this was on the initial sequence timeline that i had loaded from color after the grading.
but i can't really get a good read thru, the timeline after about 5-7 secs will start to hold up.
Define "read thru". If the sequence is dropping frames, it sounds like a bandwidth issue with your scratch disks, or a hardware setup problem.
Yes dropping frames is exactly what it was doing...I am running a quad-core xeon with 2.8ghz, with 4 daisy-chained firewire 800 drives.
I think maybe its having a problem playing back the rendered files off the internal harddrive and the firewire 800 drives I use for capture scratchs.
How many drives do you have designated as capture scratches?
I have one folder on one of the 800 drives designated for this project. In color I chose a different 'render Directory' on the internal hardrive (i believe it was a default)
What specific drives are you using?
    Lacie 500gb drives
If by "internal harddrive" you mean your system drive, this is a big no-no. I can only assume here, but I think you're working with ProRes material at this point. Depending on your specific Mac, the internal drive may not be up to the task. If you consider that that drive is running your entire OS, plus any open application, plus Final Cut Pro, plus accessing the render files, plus any other source material that you may have stored on that drive, you're asking that one drive to do a whole lot of work.
I get that. But should i change Color's render directory to somewhere in the project folder on the Lacie Drive?
So I export a self-contained movie file and it won't play without stopping in either quicktime or FCP.
A self-contained movie file of what?
    The sequence.
    How are you exporting?
FCP export > quicktime Movie > What are your sequence settings?
Xdcam 720p30 project settings based on xdcam clips, 1280 x 720
Open the file in Quicktime Player, and press Command I to open the Info Window. Make a note of the format information and post that information here.
I wish i could and I will when i get back to the office after dinner.
Chainsaws can get pretty heavy after a while. I'll take a break here and see if I hit anything of value.
I think you did...but confirm for me. Color's render directory, whats a better place for it? And thanks for the quick response it is duly appreciated.

  • After Effect cs4 export and render issue

When I tried to render or export a video, After Effect(CS4)
become no respond and close, after that, my computer shut down too!
    My computer:
    Althon 64X 4600+
    2GB DDR2 Ram
    ATI HD5870 (500mb video Ram)
    Windows 7 32 bit
Can anybody can slove this problem for me?

Mylenium asked very pertinent questions.  I'll make some educated guesses, which may or may not apply.
First thing: 2 GB may seem like a ton of memory to you, but in AE-Land, it's NOTHING.  You need to trick that machine of yours out with memory.  On a 32-bit system, that would mean bringing it up to 4 GB.
If you're trying to use multiprocessing, turn it off and leave it off.  On a 32-bit system, you'll never have enough memory to make multiprocessing work efficiently.
Trying to speed rendering by using Open GL acceleration?  Turn that off, too.
Since you're on a 32-bit system, the most recent version of AE you can run is Version 9.  Make sure it's fully updated.
But if you shot video on a DSLR, HDV Camera, XDCam or Flip Cam, you could still have problems.  Since you can't be running AE 10, which pretty much solved the problem of long-gop footage, here's why:
    Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is any  kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information.  However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information.  Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless.  I'll use Apple's Compressor, Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime Pro to do it.

  • AVCHD footage and Final Cut Express 4

Can somebody tell me how to transfer 1080/60i footage recorded with a Panasonic AG-HMC40P in Final Cut Exptess? Please try to explain  step by step in easy language because I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to computers I'll also mix this footage with the SD video recorded in DVCAM format on cassette with a SonyDVCAM. What kind of setup would you think is the best for minimum hassle? My MacBook Pro is one of the first ones with only 2GB of RAM! Cheers

Hello, later versions of FCP can do it, but see this maybe...

  • The correct use of iMovie to edit  AVCHD footage and the output to disc

Can anyone help me by setting out the simple steps I must take to take footage from my Panasonic SD9-HDC camcorder (recording on SDHC card), edit it into moves in iMovie, and then burn it to DVD quality disk to watch on an stanfard def TV through a DVD player AND to also burn to Blueray to watch on a high def TV through a blue ray player, keepin the best quality possible for the output.
The camera can record in 1080i 25 and has a 24p option too....
Finally what is the best output option to watch my created movies on a MAC and on a PC at the highest possible quality on a full screen 22" widescreen monitor?
    Many thanks

Ok, the more I dig, the more I find. So basically, if I only have one IP, and one port (external customers behind fw's that only use well-known ports(well-known to them!)) I will need a more generic cert. I can't list multiple servers in the proxy list with the same port, so the rsacert/key that matches the inbound port/content rule - must be usable by all the servers, right?
Or is there another way to have all URLs
    https://www.acme.com/timesheet
    https://www.acme.com/mail
    https://www.acme.com/pinkslips
all come in on port 443 and still have three unique certs?

  • Help Needed re:Spry Tooltip and render issue with XP

I have an issue with spry tooltip and XP not sure why ?
Here it is I am designing/building a website for a restaurant, I am making use of the spry tooltip on the menu page as a rollover for a larger menu image to appear, which it does. Everything is cool in Vista etc. but if you are using XP for some reason the rollover effect only works once and then no more until the page is refreshed which is really annoying and certainly not the effect i am looking for. I know this is occuring because of this line of code :-
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7"> which I need to keep in.
Does ANYONE know a quick fix ? or ran into this problem before ?
I am sure the attached .JS file is the key to fix.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy....!

This is one of those situations you may need to see to believe,
whats happening is only on an XP IE8 browser which the ******** client is looking at (what are the odds)?
On newer systems and other browsers NO problem:-
You bring up the menu page and mouse over spry triggers and it works PERFECTLY, but only ONCE when you try again the cursor flickers as the trigger is engaged and nothing is revealed? I am sure the spry is working but somehow it is being hidden from rendering correctly as if trapped behind another image or on a delay, and then when you mouse off maybe 500ms later the image flickers into view and dissappears almost instantly. (an obvious error of some sort)
This only occurs when I place this source code in the head tags:-
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7">
Without code works fine, but I need to include this code for it to look as it should cross browser.
Ask me anything I will help as much as I can but right now I am at a loss !
    Thanks in advance

  • AVCHD File and Folder Issues

I am trying to import AVCHD files that I recorded from a Panasonic Camera from a SanDisk SDHD 32 GB card into Final Cut Pro X. When I clicked on the card on my mac, the folders went: NO NAME/PRIVATE/AVHD/BDMV/STREAM. I accidently moved the STREAM folder from under the BDMV folder. I fixed this problem, so the structure would be correct again, but Final Cut still will not let me import the .mts files in STREAM. Any help?

Which version of FCP X? The latest version can open the mts files.

  • Kernel panic rendering AVCHD footage in Encore CS5 or CS6

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running CS6 and 10.8.2. My usual workflow is burning two hour multi-cam live performances to DVD. Usually this is two cameras of DV, one camera of AVCHD, all in a DV timeline.
Lately I've been trying to burn DV timelines of nothing but AVCHD footage, and somewhere through the rendering process I always get a kernel panic. This happens with different projects, footage from different cameras (I'm using a Panasonic AG-AC130 or HMC40), whether I'm using Encore CS5 or CS6. The projects never finish. It seems to get 50-75% through rendering video before crashing. Rendering these projects on my MacBook Pro work just fine (though much slower). Timelines where it's not 100% AVCHD are still working fine.
I had began having kernel panics unrelated to Encore, but traced this back to a heat issue. It's an old machine after all. After installing smcFanControl, this problem has gone away. I don't normally burn timelines of nothing but AVCHD, but I'm certain there was a time in the past I was able to burn these without issue. I monitor my system temperature during rendering and I'm somewhat confident that's not what's crashing the system.
The top part of my latest crash report is listed below. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

After a not-too-intense Bing search, the particular panic you're getting seems to be an indication of:
    Your Mac Pro is dying.
Bad drivers in combo with an unforgiving OS.
I don't have any easy advice for number 1.  If it is still a heat issue, you may need to redo the thermal paste on the CPU and blow the dust out of the heat sink.  If it's a deeper problem than that, some serious repair work up to and including replacement may be required.  Either way, it will be a painful fix.  For number 2, try updating your graphics card drivers (which card do you have?) and/or going back to 10.6.x or Lion 10.7.x and see if things improve.
    Jeff
EDIT: Although Encore and Premiere Pro have their share of bugs, a lot of times they expose weaknesses in a system because of how much they tax all of the hardware and software.

  • Render and preview issues with Premiere CC 2014 update

Rendering issues: Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 Update does not fix" Occasional instance where sequences could never finished rendering"
It's been 3 days 3 technicians and still same issue. Everything has been tried except starting over which is not an option. Worked
    fine in CS6.
    1. Optimization of windows and tweek premiere memory settings,
    2. GPU updates,
    3. Software only render,
4.render section at a time works (but who has time for that),
    5. Tweek virtual memory, - clean cache, clean temp files,
    6. hardware considerations, drives, etc...
    7. Other
Ceremony completed render except for export in older computer. Please fix issue or give money back until you do!
    The rendering of footage of:
    1. render worked (on complex Ceremony 19 min sequence with AVCHD format and HDV) in an old computer. - Core 2 DUO Quad 8 gb ram 2g
    b GPU
    2. Same sequence of Ceremony (19 min sequence with AVCHD format and HDV) did not work in the faster computer. - i7 QUAD core 16 ram
    1 or 2 GB GPU
    3. Reception sequence of HDV footage only did not on both computer.
Please call the exterminator and get rid of all the bugs. I am spending more time
troubleshooting than editing….and that is bad

You really aren't reading what we write.
    Let's break it down:
Suitcase isn't working with the new application versions, because Suitcase has bugs in it's code or just doesn't know about the new application versions.
The only way to fix that is to fix the code for Suitcase.
Suitcase is written by Extensis, so only Extensis can fix the code for Suitcase.
So you are waiting on Extensis to fix their code to work correctly with the new applications.
This is not about the CC 2014 applications, this is about Extensis code not working, and Extensis needing to provide an update to make their code work.
To get a working version of Suitcase (which requires fixing bugs in Suitcase), you need to talk to Extensis.

  • FCP Crash when opening log and transfer with some AVCHD footage on a card

    Hi,
I'm using a freshly (re)installed version of FCP 7 on a brand new macbookpro loaded with 8gb ram and equipped with a small 2ghz Intel Core i7
I get footage shot on Panasonic ag-hmr10 minicams coming on SD cards as AVCHD footage. Sometimes the files are quite big, 17gb of compressed footage.
When I go to log and transfer, to convert the footage in apple prores, the l/t window opens, I see a preview of my footage, than the spinning beach ball of death shows up and FCP crashes every time. I've tried deleting the preferences and reinstalling the software. Still, it keeps crashing. Now the same file on a different computer equipped with FCP will be processed, slowly but surely.
Now I know I can work around this problem by going to toast as an encoder, but I want to fix this issue so I can operate from FCP. I've seen this problem posted before but never found any good solution.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried setting the L&T AVCHD audio conversion prefs to plain stereo?
    Open the L&T window.
Click on the gear icon towards the upper center of the frame.
Select "Plain Stereo" For the AVCHD plugin.

  • Logged and Transfered AVCHD footage has dropped frames or appears jerky.

Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.
    Rod

This is one weird post. I don't understand what you are babbling about.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!!
COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

  • Render issues with footage from Color

I'll start off by noting that this issue only happens running Snow Leopard.
I am having terrible problems when trying to apply and render some effects on footage which has come from Color…specifically, the Bad Film filter. Either at the render completion or during the render, I'll get all sorts of "screen draw" problems, like green and pink pixels everywhere. Sometimes they will only appear in the Canvas window, but if I launch any other app, the new app's is nothing but the screen error and the app is useless, thought I think it still functions, though useless to the point that I'm only left with having to restart. Occasionally, it'll throw that error telling me I must restart (in several different languages). I have occasionally had success with very short clips, but anything much more than 30 seconds is useless. I would think this is a hardware issue; however, it only happens under Snow Leopard and is not an issue with Leopard.
I have performed a clean install from a zeroed disk with both 10.5 and 10.6 and upgraded to the latest point release. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I have the early 2008 8-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro with 16Gigs of RAM and two monitors connected to the ATI HD 2600 XT. I've also tried rebooting to just one monitor, but no dice. I've run hardware tests from TechTools that came with my ACD's AppleCare and all appears rosy. Real Time effects seem to work just fine and I don't have issues with all effects that require rendering. Most befuddling, I'm having no issue on clips that have not first gone through Color. Strange, huh?

Sorry about that.... The footage is ProRes422 1440x1080 going into Color and ProRes422 1920x1080 coming out. I've tried exporting at 8-bit Uncompressed out of Color with the same results.
Originally, this is 24p footage from an HV20 taken to ProRes via this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410 method.
I'm still just not sure why this only happens in Snow Leopard, while everything works peachy in Leopard, though I think you may be on the right track with this being an FxPlug filter. I know I would occasionally get messages stating, basiclly, "Your GFX card is a wimp, these filters won't work" when trying 10-bit sequences under Leopard, thus I tried the 8-bit setting with this issue and all without any luck. I'll will try "Light Rays" and "Bloom" this evening to see if I get the same result.
To make this stranger still, Bad TV seems to render just fine, as far as I can recall, only Bad Film give me problems. I suppose this particular filter may not be compatible with my configuration. Perhaps, I shoud be getting that message instead of a crash.

  • How to back up projects and raw AVCHD footage???

Please bear with me as I'm really new to digital editing. I'm trying to understand how to work with AVCHD files. Obviously, these are too large to store on my computer once they are ingested; hence, the only option is to store the raw footage. I can burn the raw AVCHD footage to DVD no problem (I use an optional DVD burner that works with my Canon HF-10 camera). Now I'm trying to understand how to work with the system (i.e. save project files for re-editing later on). I'm using a Canon HF-10, and Final Cut Express 4, on a new MacBook Pro.
Here's how I think it might work, but please correct me if I'm wrong:
    1) I begin a new project, ingesting the raw AVCHD footage as I need it.
    2) I edit the footage and save the completed project.
    3) With the project completed, and since the ingested video files are too big to save, I delete the ingested footage from the scratch drive, but still saving the FCE project file (This means that if I open the project file now, I will get a message telling me the media files have gone offline).
    4) I move on to my next project, and carry on ingesting new AVCHD files as I did with the original project.
    Here's where I'm confused...
    5) I later come back to the original project to make a few changes.
QUESTION: Can I simply re-ingest the raw AVCHD footage into the scratch folder and carry on editing the first project? Or will I have problems with Final Cut Express finding the media files??? Or any other problems??
There may be easier ways to do this for someone who understands computers better than I do. I am looking for the simplest solution that will work for me, since I really don't have any technical computer skills/abilities. Will the procedure I described above work???
Thanks so much for your advice!

I'm no pro, and surely not a technical wizard, but what I plan on doing is this:
Back up the raw AVCHD files on DVD (2 copies ideally). Delete them from the camera. Ingest the files into FCE and edit. I won't change the name of the raw media files at any time, to avoid confusing FCE. Once I've finished editing, I'll keep the FCE project file (and any related files) on my hard drive. However, I will delete the huge ingested files from the hard drive (because, no matter how big an external drive you have, to me using 160GB to store two hours of video is nuts). Then, if at a later date I want to re-edit, I'll re-ingest the original files back onto the scratch drive. I figure FCE will read them fine, since they haven't changed; they've merely been removed and replaced. One key point here is that, when ingesting the AVCHD files, you must ingest the complete clips, not just a part of them. That way, nothing about the files (such as the length, starting and finishing points, etc.) will have changed. It may seem a bit awkward, but that's about the only way I, being a technophobe, can understand how to do it without keeping huge files on a hard drive. And, I am only speculating that this will work. At this point, I'm still waiting on the DVD burner that works with my Canon camcorder to arrive in the mail. Then I'll do some testing/experimenting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  • What sequence setting would you use to edit 1280 x1080 DVCProHD (P2) and 1920 x 1080 AVCHD (Sony) in FCP. Experiencing Quality and rendering issues.

What sequence setting would you use to edit both 1280 x1080 DVCProHD (P2) and 1920 x 1080 AVCHD (Sony) in a single timeline in FCP. I'm experiencing quality and rendering issues.  I've tried numerous settings but can't seem to figure this one out.  Thanks for your assistance.

Although you can combine the avchd 1920x1080 material with prores 1920x1080 in the same timeline, you might land up saving time just converting everything to 1920x1080 prores 422.   You'd probably reduce the amount of rendering while you're working and exporting when you're done by a great deal.  This workflow will require much more drive space.
