AVCHD Formats

I am the new owner of the Panasonic HDC-TM900.  It has several recording format options.   I want the best HD quality available.  I understand the 1080/60p option, drawbacks so I am looking at the next best options for full HD:
HA 1920
HG 1920
HX 1920
HE 1920
Need help understanding the differences of these formats as the manual thinks I know what I am doing.

Panasonic HDC-HS900
iMovie 11 Version 9.0.4
With iMovie open, I connect the camera to my macbookpro and on the camera screen I am asked me to select:
PC
or
RECORDER
I select PC and no iMovie dialogue boxes open, only iPhoto opens. I close down iPhoto. There is no way I can import the 1080/50p (.MTS) files I have just recorded via FILE>IMPORT>MOVIES>AVCHD>BDMV>STREAM because these are greyed out. If I recorded in iFrame, I can see the files no problem?

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Sony SR1e | AVCHD Format

    Hi,
I'am new to this forum and can't find any useful information regarding the support of the AVCHD-Format used by Sony's SR1e.
So does the latest Final Cut Studio 2 support the .mts AVCHD Format by the SR1E?
I see Sony in the partner list, but the cam is not on the device list.
I found some scripting and complicated ways to convert the .mts to mpeg, but maybe there is a smarter solution out there?
Or is it really true, that I have to use the Nero Burning Application on Windows to convert the AVCHD's instead of the latest Final Cut Studio editing software?
btw: Squared 5's Streamclip Software is not able to convert the .mts files.
    Kind Regards, Carlo

Not sure about FCS2 but you do have options with a capture card and bring in to FC in many different codecs. Depending on your computer you could use a Black Magic Intensity card for the all digital HDMI port on this camera and bring it in as DVC PRO HD and edit in an all digital all I frame codec. Even if Apple comes out with support for this AVCHD you may still want to avoid it as most HDV shooter/editors do.

Can Compressor 4 convert an AVCHD format to DVD format?  Or is there another suggested program that will work?

  • How can I get movies from my sony DSC-HX9V in AVCHD format to the mac?

I have recently received a Sony DSC-HX9V camera. It does movie recordings in AVCHD format. Is there a simple way to transfer these to imovie or elsewhere on my Mac? Any ideas please. Thank you.

Take a look at this compatibility chart:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
and read the notes re. your model. So, the next best thing then would be MPEG Streamclip (free) which should be able to convert your footage to something iMovie can work with. Note: You may need to purchase the MPEG2 Playback Component from the Apple Store (less than $20) which may be needed (that depends on a) your OS version and b) the MPEG Streamclip version).

  • FCE Compatibility with AVCHD Format

Does anyone know if Apple has announced, or if we should otherwise expect, updates for FCE or FCP to be compatible with the AVCHD format a few newer cameras are starting to use?

I doubt you're right, but then we'd be speculating.

  • Why i can't import a clip of AVCHD format from iPhoto originaly from my Sony NEX-5N

why i can't import a clip of AVCHD format from iPhoto originaly from my Sony NEX-5N?

Hi there. For anyone searching, here are the results of my research and corresponding advice back to Sony...
Thanks, your comments looked correct but did not solve my problem. You may be interested to know after much testing and research, I was able to ascertain that some of the camera's AVCHD settings iMovie cannot see at all (only some, which made it even harder to figure out!). Plus, if you have recorded movie clips in more than one format to the memory card (MP4 or any one of the AVCHD's), iMovie cannot see any of the AVCHD's.
Bottom line - forgo the benefits of AVCHD on the Sony NEX-5N and just use MP4 until Apple makes it easier.

  • Trouble burning a DVD using AVCHD format

I recently completed about a 19 minute video project (photos and short video clips), and I was able to burn it to a DVD at standard quality using Premiere Elements 10.  When I try to burn to AVCHD, though, I get an error just before it's ready to start burning.  It encodes all of the media and just switches to the Burn menu when "Error" pops up.  There isn't any other explanation.  I've also tried to burn to a folder and I get the same result.
I've used Premiere Elements 10 for 4 years doing this same type of project, and I've been able to burn to AVCHD successfully in the past.  Any ideas why it's no longer working?
Computer specs:  Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop, i5 processor, 12 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive w/ 770 GB free.
    I appreciate any help.

Let us go through the drill of deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file, and, if that does not work, then the hold 10.0 Folder in which it exists.

    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements

and in the 10.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then you delete the whole 10.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives enabled so that you can see the complete path cited. The path to Folder Options starts with File Explorer in Windows 8.1 64 bit.
Depending on your answers, this issue may take us into a deeper look into the Timeline content construction. But, the answers will be in the details. Let

  • What timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format?

I am shooting with the Sony HXR NX5, and i would like to ask what timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format? I do not see any format in the Final Cut Pro and in Motion that matches my camera format.
Thank you very much for your assistance.
    Best regards,
    Richard

IF you are working with FCP 7.0.3 (the last version) then you use Log and Transfer to ingest your footage from that camera, and Log and Transfer will convert the AVCHD camera files to ProRes.
Once the camera files are ingested, make a new (empty) timeline, and either drag a source clip or edit it to that timeline and you will be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source clip. Say yes and you should be good to go.
AVCHD, H.264,etc. files are not directly usable in FCP without conversion.

How do I import the new AVCHD files in to iMovie?

I doubt Sony will let Apple in on the AVCHD format. ...

Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 contains several updates, including:

  • How to burn a AVCHD format file to disc

I have been unable to burn a DVD disc with the AVCHD format using the sharing options of Premiere Elements (version 11). There is an error message of "media not present."
The program burn option only worked for a DVD format output, which yields poor relative quality. The original source file imported into elements was  an AVCHD (with a .BDM file). I have also tried various name brands of DVD-r or +r media with no resolution.
Alternatively I have tried the save to folder workaround option which generated a ".F4V" file. I have been unsuccessful to convert/burn to disk (last attempt using a 3rd party utility ended with a low quality DVD).
Does anyone have solutions or ideas on how to resolve my issue. Many thanks.

Great news tht the AVCHD on DVD burn to folder (4.7 GB) worked.
However, here is the basic path to stay with....
Although you may see references to a CERTIFICATE FOLDER needed along with the BDMV Folder, ignore that. The AVCHD DVD burn to folder comes only with the BDMV Folder. ImgBurn should create a CERTICATE FOLDER for your AVCHD DVD when burned there.
    1. Open ImgBurn and select the category "Write files/folders to disc".
    2. In the page that opens, go to the File Menu/Browse for a Source Folder and browse to the BDMV Folder from the AVCHD DVD burn to folder. Select only the BDMV Folder, using the Select Folder option in the dialog.
    3. Click on the Build button at the bottom of the dialog to initiate the process. At the onset, you will probably we hit by program messages saying that it detects a BDMV Folder and asks if you want it to reset for Blu-ray disc. Answer No. Do not let it reset to Blu-ray disc. If it wants to do volume labels for you, it is OK to say Yes.
The final setting that worked for me for playback with my CyberLink computer player were:
    Data Type: MODE1/2048
    File System(s): ISO9660, UDF (1.02)
I think that I have covered all the dos and do not's, but, if any problems, please let me know. I have road tested this, so it should be OK.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thanks.

  • Panasonic HDC-SD9, AVCHD format & iMovie

The HDC-SD9 Panasonic is a high definition camcorder that records in the AVCHD format. Bear with me as I try to explain in layperson terms my question. I then created several Imovie events by removing the SD card from the camera and using a memory card reader to upload. I then created a separate Imovie Project by taking footage from various Events. I tried to copy the project onto a new SD card, place the SD card back in the camera and play the recording. However, the camera indicates "no data" on the card. So, a couple of questions: 1) Is this because the HD camera cannot read the Imovie codec? 2) What format/codec does Imovie convert the AVCHD to? 3) If I burn the project to a double-layered disk in High Definition will it play on a Blu-Ray DVD or a DVD that can read a high definition disk? 4) Bottomline is that I would like to edit the AVCHD footage captured on the Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder, burn to a disk and play it on a DVD player. Is this possible?

As you discovered, you cannot move a finished movie back to your camera for playback.
For playback on an Apple TV, shore using the LARGE preset, and you will get a 960x540 file that looks really good on a high definition TV if it has upscaling circuitry, because this is a simple upscale to 1920x1080.
If you want to burn a movie in full 1920x1080, there are several options.
    1) You can create it using iMovie's "Export using Quicktime" feature and watch it on your Mac. Use a 24" iMac for best results. It will use the entire screen.
    2) Same as #1 except you can watch it on a Sony Playstation 3.
    2) You can get Toast 9 with BluRay plug in and burn up 20 minutes or so of movies to a standard DVD. It might be more with a dual layer DVD but I have not tried it. Create your movie and export it using Quicktime in AIC or h.264 and the burn in Toast. Most BluRay players will read the DVD.
    3) If you have a BluRay burner, you can use Toast 9 to burn multiple movies up to theatrical length and maybe more.

  • QuickTime video to AVCHD format

    I recently purchased a Sony Blu-Ray / DVD Recorder (VBD-MA1).
My camera outputs a QuickTime video file which needs to be converted to AVCHD format as the supported format for the recorder.

  • HT3290 Panasonic HDC-SD900 - iMovie - AVCHD format

    Hi everyone
I have a Panasonic HDC-SD900 - when I'm in iMovie I don't see any of the clips I've filmed in AVCHD format - which is most of them. How do I see them in order to download them?
I'm using a MacBook Pro - latest OS X platform
    Thanks
    Cenwyn

Yes. Every time you transcode a clip there are some approximations that must be made.
Since your original footage is a heavily compressed format to begin with, it remains to be seen if using Streamclip will make it look worse.
    good luck.

  • Making AVCHD format discs

Is it possible to make AVCHD format DVD discs (1920x1080/60i) using Encore?  Is there a format I can output from Premiere Pro CS5 that will allow me to make an AVCHD disc from Encore that does not require transcoding of the file in Encore?  Like if I choose H.264 1920x1080 29.97 interlace at 18Mpbs or lower?

No it is not.  AVCHD compatible discs are blu-ray format data structures on standard DVD discs, no blu-ray burner required.  I make them all the time using Nero and Corel Movie Factory, they play on any standard Blu-Ray player, but consist of 1920x1080 files burned onto standard DVD discs.  It does not appear Encore supports this, but it is a commonly used format for HD content by hobbyists, for video contests, etc.

  • Converting AVCHD Format with FCPX

I just purchased my first "Prosumer" level camera and it records in AVCHD format.  Do I need to get a third party software program to convert my footage to Pro Res or does FCPX do this automatically when I import my footage.  Still usung FCPX 10.0.9
    Thanks,

You don't need a third party converter. FCP X will now open and work with the native media.
