AVCHD (GF2) vs H.264/Mpeg4 (Nikon D5100)

Hi friends,
1) AVCHD isn't the same codec to H.264/Mpeg4?
i. Both offer the same quality?
ii. Which codec most convenient to a FCP user?
iii. Nikon D5100 vs Lumix GF21-what do you say in term of Video Mode?
Thanks for contributes your precious opinions!

I shoot video with the Nikon D7000, you can find my recent posts in another thread. No idea what a GF2 is but using any adapter to put one lens mfr's glass on another camera compromises the quality of the lens Buy lenses for the specific camera.
The whole idea of using prime lenses to shoot video is based on image sensor size and the inherent physical properties of the point of focus. The depth of field and the resulting bokeh effect are directly proportional to the resulting circle of confusion, highly theoretical optical characteristics, easily researched.
Mish's points are excellent negatives. Here are few more:
1. Focusing is not just important, it's beyond critical.
2. Today's autofocus SLR lenses have stupidly and inappropriately small focus runs which means the point of focus is easily overshot. Just letting go of the focus barrel can screw up your focus. Look for classic, old style lenses that will work on your modern camera.
3. You cannot see focus in the viewfinder when in live view mode, which is stupid but technically unavoidable, and you cannot rely on the LCD display. You must have a viewfinder magnifier hood which elevates the cost of your rig by $200-600.
4. You simply must understand the relationships between f-stops, shutter speed and ISO and it is my experience that only about 1% of the goofballs shooting "video" on DSLRs have the slightest idea what these properties mean let alone how to control them and how they interact.
5. You need to know how to use a light meter and not rely on the camera.

  • Encoding so H.264 .MOV is playable by Nikon D5100

I want to be able to create a .MOV file in the trial version of Premiere Elements 9 that will playback on my Nikon D5100.  It is my understanding that the D5100 creates H.264 format with Long-GOP (Group of Pictures) using B frames (bi-directional differencing between frames).  It gets very good compression and quality.  However, no matter what encoding choices I make, the PE9 movies I make end up 10x the size of the D5100 source .MOV.  As a simple test, I take a D5100 sourced .MOV (1080p 30fps normal quality), put it on the timeline, then try to Share it as a Quicktime .MOV configured to be similar to the source material.  No matter what video encoding choices I make, the end result it about 10x the size of the source AND the Nikon D5100 doesn't like the format and won't play it back.  Any guidance as to how to get the .MOV I'm creating to be the same size and quality as the source AND have the D5100 recognize it and play it back?  I think I'm missing something obvious, or are there undocumented limitations of PE or the trial version that are thwarting my efforts, or is high compression/high quality H.264 abilities thwarted by technology licensing issues.  By-the-way, the point of this is to be able to show my daily movie segments to my travel partners while in-the-field/on trips.  If I can get this to work, I think that D5100 will show a better/smoother video out its HDMI port than my laptop will with a Nvidia Geforce G105M.  Be gentle with me as I'm a tad new to video.

Like many video formats, there are dozens of different flavors and compression settings for H.264/MP4s, including AVC (which itself has a number of flavors). It's going to be pretty tough to figure out exactly that camera is producing.
You can try opening the video in G Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and seeing if that gives you specs you need. But even then it's hard to say if you'll get something that gives you the EXACT size file that camera produces.

  • Lightroom 1.4 & Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I'm running Lightroom 1.4, but when I try to upload RAW files taken on my Nikon D5100 I get an error message saying the files are either unsupported or damaged.  Is it possible to edit Nikon Raw files on Lightroom?
I'd be grateful for any advice,
    Chris

Support for the Nikon D5100 was provided in LR 3.4.1 in May 2011 so the options are
    1. Upgrade to Lightroom 3.5 the latest Lightroom version or
    2. Download the latest DNG Converter from the Adobe website and convert your .nef files to dng. Lightroom 1.4 will then be able to work with the dng files. Keep the original nef files for use with the Nikon software as it does not support dng files.
That said the upgrade to LR 3.x is a substantial improvement from version 1.4 and well worth the price of upgrading around $90. Many new and improved features including an updated processing engine, sharpening, noise reduction and lens correction function. You can download the trial version and use the full functionality for thirty days and make an informed decision.

  • Can I edit Nikon D5100 RAW photos in iPhoto '09?

I recently shot photos for an event with my Nikon D5100, using the RAW + jpeg setting. I uploaded my photos into an iPhoto event, and both the RAW and jpeg photos appeared in the event. I have read that iPhoto '09 supports lossless RAW file editing, so I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
More information: I am running OS X 10.6.8, and iPhoto 8.1.2. The page at the below link indicates that the D5100 is supported in 10.6.8, without mention of a specific RAW Compatibility update that must accompany the OS. I am assuming that since iPhoto '11 requires OS X 10.7.5 or later this information applies to my use of iPhoto '09, though any RAW compatibility updates on the Apple site for download are either only for iPhoto '11 or already installed on my computer.
Any insights on what may be going wrong? Thanks.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825

I believe that the 5100 will work on iPhoot 09 and 10.6.8 and these issues:
I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
are due to the fact that iPhoto cannot find the Raw file - that's what the ! means.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • .nef Nikon D5100 is not displaying right in Camera Raw

    Hello,
these two images show the exact same .nef file being opened in two different programs. The first one with the blown out colors is opened in Adobe Camera Raw. The second one is opened in Nikons View NX 2 software. This is also the way I see the photo on the display of my Nikon D5100 camera. I really would like to handle my .nef files in Bridge and Adobe Raw and not in Nikon View NX2. Can someone help me with this please? I have Photoshop CS5.1 (64bit) and Camera Raw 6.7.0.339.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas

    Hello,
Thanks for the reply. How do you switch the camera profile please?
I can adjust the settings in ACR so that it looks more like the Nikon Software, but it's not easy to match this. Also, when I pull vibrance to -100 for example to regain the detail, a lot of noise appears. You'll have to admit that there is a BIG difference here between the two images. (both are untouched)

  • Which version of camera raw will work with elements 9 and a Nikon D5100? How do I download photos to it?

I have Photoshop Elements 9 and use a Nikon D5100.  I have downloaded camera raw 6.5 but cannot download photos to it.  Does camera raw start automatically or do I have to manual start it?

    That did I, thanks.

  • Photoshop CS3/Camera Raw and Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CS3 and a Nikon D5100 and I am unable to open my RAW files.
    Any ideas?

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
The D5100 has been supported since Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 6.4 which is only compatible with CS5 and later. CS3 is too old.
    Either
    Join the Cloud, or
Join the Photoshop Photography Program, or
Buy Lightroom 5, open the Raw files, save to TIFF then edit the TIFFs in CS3, or
Keep CS3. Download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert all your D5100 Raw files to DNGs. Then edit the DNGs in CS3.

  • Lightroom 3 and Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I just recieved my Nikon D5100 today and it looks as if Lightroom doesn't recognize raw for the camera.  It worked perfectly with my Nikon D5000.  Does anyone know when Lightroom will support D5100 raw and if there's a workaround until it's officially supported?
    Chris

    I'm in the same situation.
    Failed options:
I could use NX, but then I would end up with jpegs or tiffs, neither of which is my permanent storage format (DNG), nor a viable alternative (not being raw).
I tried to install Adobe DNG converter, but it prompted me to install their app manager, which then said it couldn't install DNG converter. (DNG converter 6.0.3.79 does not recognize the D5100's NEF files.)
Preview and Quick Look don't recognize them yet; no OS X support.
    Read-only:
Xee does open the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.2 is current from http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html .) It is designed for viewing, not editing; I use it for my first preview/cull step (sometimes).
The GIMP also opens the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.6.1 from http://www.gimp.org/ , which says it uses UFRaw 0.17 which in turn uses DCRaw.) However, no option to save as DNG.

  • How can I share (e-mail) NEF files shot with a Nikon d5100 in Lightroom 4.4?

I am new to shooting RAW NEF and then sharing them in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.4. How do you share (e-mail) NEF files shot with a Nikon
D5100 that have been downloaded into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.4.? Isn't there someway to convert to JPEG for sharing. I have 50th wedding
anniversary photos taken and want to share with family and can't. Thank You for any assistance on this problem.

If you use the inbuilt email option your NEFs would be automatically converted to Jpeg, in accordance with the settings you choose bottom left of the email dialog box (or you can setup your own specific settings).
Alternatively you could export to Jpeg, then attach the exported files to an email outside Lightroom.
Or you could upload them to a web hosting site such as Flickr or Picasa, or maybe use Dropbox or similar.
Bottom line is there are lots of ways of sharing your pictures with your family.

  • Downloaded raw 7.1 to my cs4 and can't open raw files taken with nikon d5100.  d70 raw files do open

Need a solution to above question.

Raw 7 is compatible with Cs6 version of Adobe software, not with CS4.
    Check this link :- http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
and to open the Nikon D5100 raw files the minimum camera raw plugin required in 6.4
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
You can use the DNG converter with the CS4 to open this files, I think that will be the best option.

  • Re-installed CS5: unable to open Nikon D5100 Raw files

I lost my hard drive and reloaded CS 5 and when I try to edit a Nikon D5100 camera raw photo is says it is not supported.

You probably just need to install the camera raw 6.7 update, since a new install of photoshop reverts to the shipped version of camera raw 6.0.
Try Help>Updates from within photoshop cs5.
If that doesn't work, you can download the camera raw 6.7 installers:
    windows
Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Camera Raw 6.7 Update
    mac
Adobe - Photoshop : For Macintosh : Camera Raw 6.7 Update
Any other updates you need for cs5 can be found here:

  • BlackBox Instead of Picture when Importing Photos from Nikon D5100

We had been able to import photos (and HD movies) into iPhoto '11 in versions before 9.4.3 (720.91) from a Nikon D5100 camera SDHC 16GB memory card with no problem. In the current version however (apparently after the latest update to iPhoto '11) after importing the contents of the SDHC memory card with Nikon D5100 photos and movies, some of the photos (in raw file format) appear as black boxes in iPhoto after the import.
    So Note the following:
iPhoto ' 11 Direct Import - does not work
Direct import from Nikon D5100 SDHC (Lexar) memory card results in some photos appearing as opaqe black boxes in iPhoto '11
Nikon, Inc. Nikon Transfer app - works to get files into folder in Mac OS X
using the exact same memory card on the exact same computer (MacBook Pro) to import those same photos and movies using the "Nikon Transfer" application - ALL of the photos import into the MacBook Pro in the same raw file format.
Indirect Method of getting Photos into iPhoto '11 (never had to do this before but this works)
after getting the photos into a folder in the MacBook Pro file system using the "Nikon Transfer" application from Nikon, Inc. - iPhoto '11 is able to import those raw NEF files from the folder in the MacBook Pro file system into iPhoto '11 with no problem and those same black box pictures (observed with direct iPhoto '11 transfer) now look fine after doing an "indirect transfer" as described above ( memory card --> Nikon, Inc. "Nikon Transfer" application --> folder with raw NEF photos in MacOSX --> iPhoto '11
Has something changed in the latest version of iPhoto '11 to prevent import of Nikon D5100 photos in raw-NEF file format?
    thanks

Still don't know about the hot pink color issue but I did find I needed to download the Nikon Transfer2, not the first version.  Newer Nikon DSLR's require the second version and the disk is included with the camera purchase.  Select the option to have Nikon Transfer2 open when attaching your camera or data card to computer, then go directly to iphoto to import... don't bother importing to the View NX2 unless you plan to use it as an edit tool, etc.
So, I believe it's not iphoto's issue.... maybe it's Nikon wishing you to use their program but if you really must use iphoto, you just need to go a little out of your way.  ugh.
