AVCHD import crash on my mac mini, works on my mac pro...

Hi there,
I got a brand new camcorder from Canon (HF11), that records movies in AVCHD (1920x1080i - 50 ips - 24 Mb/s).
When I connect it to my mac pro 2008 (intel Xeon quad core), the import work flawlessly, I can edit the rush in iMovie 09 and work on them.
However, when I do exactly the same operation on my mac mini late 08 (intel core2duo), the import fails in iMovie, that just inform me of the failure, without any feedback.
Console reports the following messages:

    But only 27" iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) can do this.
    Since you mentioned an Early 2009 iMac I assume that it is a 24" iMac which sadly has not this capability.

  • AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.

    AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.  I see both machines on both airdrop windows. Firewalls on both machines are set exactly the same way, and with Network Browser set to allow.  Can send a file from Mac mini to MacBook, but not the other way.  Never get a window asking to accept on the Mac mini.
    Found no useful documentation on AirDrop anywhere in the whole support site.

    Maybe this will work. From an Apple support article.
    You can also use the Share button to send files to your neighbors via AirDrop. In a Finder window, select the item you want to share, and then click the Share button in the toolbar. For more information about the Share button, see this help topic:

    MY MAC MINI WORK SLOW

    Go to the Application folder then utilities folder.
    Open "Activity monitor"
    Check you have enough free ram
    Check if one process is taking a high % of processor ressources
    As BGreg wrote, check free disk space
    Your mac may be busy something like indexing your disk (mdworker process or similar)
    or some badly designed application may be "eating" your ram free space

    Would a 256 GB SSD on a 2012 Mac Mini significantly improve Final Cut Pro X Performance?
    I'm considering a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 Quad Core with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD with external Thunderbolt drives.
    I understand that Mavericks allocates 1GB VRAM from system memory in a 2012 Mini with 8GB RAM.

    It will only improve the read and write performance, and this is not as important as the processor and the GPU in Final Cut Pro.
    The Mac mini has got an integrated GPU that may work if you are a home user, but if you are a professional user, you should consider an iMac, a 15-inch MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro. You won't notice a big performance increase

    Hello,
    The likely best way would be to put the older one into Target mode...

    Then use Migration Assistant to migrate all your data & settings over.

    Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

    There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
    In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
    You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
    Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
    WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

    Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
    If it's a G4, buy a retail Mac OS X 10.5 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay; Apple still might have copies in stock if you phone them.
    If it's an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

    It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
    For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
    larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
    Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
    Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.

  • Will the new mac mini work with the older Flat panel iMac globe speakers?

    I am thinking it might be time to upgrade my 800mhz FP 17", and since i have an extra 22" monitor laying around being unused, i thought the Mac mini would be a drop in replacement...but then i thought about the imac FP speakers and i would like to keep using them...is anyone using these speakers with the mac mini?

    The Apple 'Pro speakers' that were designed by Apple and Harman Kardon, use a proprietary 2.5mm mini jack connector and they would need an adapter to work.
    Years ago there was a product called the 'iFire' that allowed those speakers to be used with other macs with a firewire port ..... Here's a site that I found that has more information than you'll need to know about the speakers and the adapter: http://maczealots.com/reviews/ifire/
    At the time, the pro speakers technology was pretty cool ... combining power and digital audio into the one cable. I still think they look striking....
    I did a bit of snooping around and couldn't find the adapter for sale (aside from a used one on Amazon for $199 ouch) .... I believe it has been discontinued.
    I think you'll have to follow another route.....

  • Mac Mini worked at first with Haier 42" plasma - now won't.  Please Help!

    I'd be interested in any resolution here. Here's my story:
    I have a Mac Mini model MA723LL/A and a Haier P42LV6-T1 42" HDTV plasma with VGA and HDMI inputs. I first attempted to hook the Mac to the plasma TV using the DVI->VGA adapter that came with the Mac. I got no image at all on the TV, and the TV claimed 'No Signal'.
    Then I used a DVI->HDMI adapter, and hooked the Mac to the TV thru the HDMI port. I got a picture and was happy. I setup iTunes, got the wireless working, surfed the web a bit and all was OK except the resolution seemed wonky. So I opened the Mac's settings panel to adjust the resolution, and as soon as I opened the settings panel, the screen went blank, with the TV claiming 'No Signal'. I shut off the Mac and rebooted, and from that point forward, what happens is this:
    press On Button->
    Apple Boot Screen->
    MacOS 10 loading->
    desktop For About 1 millisecond->
    screen goes blank with TV claiming 'No Signal'
    I hooked the Mac to my Dell 20" LCD monitor thru the monitor's DVI input and got a great picture. I tested all the resolution settings, and everything was fine. I have tested the Mac on the TV with all available resolution settings and it's always the same story (see above for sequence)
    I'm kinda at the end of my rope. The Mac seems to be changing something on its video output at the end of its bootup, but I have no clue what. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any advice at all?

    Try what Apple recommends and see if that helps:

  • Does the Mac Mini work well with a Sony 50" SXRD HDTV?

    I would like to purchase a Mac Mini and use it as a home theatre PC for my tv. I have a Sony 50" SXRD Grand WEGA Model # KDS-R50XBR1 tv. I will connect the Mac Mini to the tv via a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I want to make sure the Mac Mini can support this size screen at full native resolution which is 1920x1080. Any help, comments, or suggestions will be very helpful!
    Thanks.

    Thank you for posting on this specific topic. The combination of a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 & a Mac Mini is a keen interest & current distraction in my life.
    To this point, I can confirm that out of the box the Mini will reliably support a max 16:9 resolution of 1280x720, when connected to this TV via DVI-to-HDMI, albeit with over-scan (all edges off screen by a distracting degree). Display quality at this resolution is clear/readable (although some text may have some minor distortion or artifacts). Alternatively, connecting via DVI-to-VGA (PC 8) provides a crisper display, however (confirming pg 100 in the tv's manual) the Sony limits to the same 1280x720 resolution. Via this input the image has under-scan (black bands [letter & pillar box) all edges ~2"). Obviously, given the published specs of both devices, this is sub-optimal. That unfortunately is the straight forward answer to your question.
    This lack of out-of-the-box native compatibility is not unique to the XBR. I have confidence that those more qualified than me, may be able to prescribe a pixel for pixel solution/work around. Throughout this forum, many informative posts have been generously/gratiously contributed by those in support of Mac Mini/HDTV harmony, quite often leading to success.
    Significant among these have been contributors such as BSteely. I am both encouraged to see that BSteely has replied to your post, and concerned by the words of caution. I'm hopeful that this thread will continue to develop, ultimately leading to an optimal solution for this pairing.
    There are many indications that a full native resolution of 1920x1080 should be possible. The Mini's display settings will recognize this particular Sony and register 1920x1080 (interlaced) as an example. However selecting this will cause the display to go black. This apparently is an out of the box limitation of the Mini, as my 17" PowerBook will display/maintain this setting (again with over-scan). So far I have not found the alternate settings (including those registered by the PowerBook) & techniques posted elsewhere in this forum to be effective when adapted to the Mini/XBR.
    Please note that my primary objectives (equally weighted) going into this were;
    1) getting on the HDTV bandwagon, by purchasing what I believed to be the best combination of technology/quality/future proofing/price. Regardless of how the Mini might ultimately perform when connected, I'm very happy with this set as a TV (Although the 1080p capability via 1080i input continues to confuse).
    2) connecting a Mini I had purchased last summer, to a large digital display. The obvious & elegant manner in which a Mini can be integrated into a home theater/home network, is (I can attest) truly compelling.
    Although I have yet to find the holy grail we both may be seeking, in a world where any thing seems possible, I remain optimistic.
    Stay tuned here & elsewhere
