AVCHD in FCPX

Can you import AVCHD , create only Proxy media to work with , and then export in AVCHD again with no transcoding ( bar proxy ) to save disc space ?
I currently have massive files of optimized media. If I delete them , will FCPX revert to original media , or on import does it transcode to prores ( as I selected ) and not keep the original.
I am thinking if I delete the optimized media , it will only use the proxy version and not the original AVCHD .
The original files show a .MOV file. ( Not AVCHD ) Is this just wrapped AVCHD ?
Also , What render setting / export setting should I use if the AVCHD original media IS usable without the transcode ?

Yes , EG : 6.67g of original media  -      ( Proxy ) 6.5G     Optimized is stored on an external drive. and I believe 40G .   render files for this project are 80Gig !!!
I read somewhere that you can export in AVCHD and it is stunning , so no optimized was needed. I have read a million posts and not sure where I saw this. Also it can be burnt to disc directly in AVCHD  ,  apparently close to bluray quality on a standard disc. So I am questioning , do I need optimized .

  • Choppy and Dropping Frames with AVCHD on FCPX

    Hi,
I'm having a nightmare problem with AVCHD on my Mac Pro and FCPX.
    So I'm editing with 1080 60p from FS700, NX70, GoPro Hero3 and XR-550V.
Imported without transcoding first, so just a rewrap into QT.
Tried to play a single clip in the events or timeline in this conditons:
    - "Use original or optimized media" > High Quality
    - "Use original or optimized media" > Better Perfomance
    - "Use proxy media" (and did a transcode only for 4 clips to test)
With all those possibilities it ALWAYS plays choppy and dropping frames.
Playing in the QT (PRIVATE and choosing the clip) plays normal.
Playing in the QT proxy transcoded from FCPX plays normal.
Using Premiere CC is also normal.
Tried to ensure that the timeline is 29.97p, same thing (dropped frames choppy).
    What could it be?
    Specs:
    FCPX 10.0.9
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    Original Material in a RAID0 ~220MB/s R/W
Processor  2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  7 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Well, it's possible for FCP to find something about either your hardware (or a third party software) problematic and for Pr to be OK with. Premiere has long been more agnostic about formats and codecs than FCP.
Unsure what to suggest. It shouldn't require the latest-greatest ;for example,  we have a four year old MBP, running Lion that can play 1080 AVCHD smoothly… although we set Preferences to better performance.

Does anybody know a good app to convert avchd 50p files to mov?

    Serdar68010 wrote:

Why would you want to do this? FCP X can import them natively - which, in effect, will convert them (or, rather, rewrap them, since there is no recompress of the actual movie data) to mov.
So, perhaps one good answer to your question is: FCP X.

  • AVCHD content

Can anyone tell me what happens when I from a CD card coppy AVCHD BDMV vidoe into a directory on my Macbook (0S 10.8.4). Then I can import AVCHD in FCPX and it works, but if I coppy the same file to an external disk(OSX format) I can'nt import it to FCPX ??

I'm having the same issue, and the problem is there is NO folder structure with the new Mac IOS.  Older Macs recognize two folders -- AVCHD and AVF_INFO, and inside the AVCHD folder is another folder, named BDMV, inside of which is the AVCHD media file.  The new Macbook Pro doesn't see ANY folders -- just one media file named AVCHD.  WHen you try importing this into Premiere, you can see the clips but there are error messages for each clip saying something like "format not recognized," and even if you save the project, if you close and reopen it, the clips come up offline and cannot be reconnected.
But the main point is the new OS does NOT SEE ANY FOLDER STRUCTURE, while older Macs DO see the proper folder structure.

  • 1080 50p importing problem.

I have imported 1080 50p avchd into fcpx but it plays back at practically 25p with missing every other frames (like a freeze-frame of the previous frame) but some of it has imported correctly from the same card and camera. It says it has imported it all at 50fps, but it clearly hasnt. Same problem with 720 50p files, some fine, some wrong. Does anyone know what has happened?

  • I NEED HELP...I am new to FCPX and I can NOT get my AVCHD files on HD to import to FCPX

I am new to FCPX and I shoot video on canon xa10 using internal HD...When I go to import into FCPX the files are empty?? Why?? I can see the files on my HD but the import window only shows the name of the file and no footage to import..WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?? Tell me I did not pay $300.00 for an editing prog that I cant use..And please be gental, like I said im new to editing side.

AVCHD is no 'format' but a specific folder-structure.
to allow FCPX to import from there, this COMPLETE files&folders structure has to be intact.
'cause people ignored that, since MacOS 10.8. this folder strucuture is hidden in a pkg-file, which looks like that:
this 'Private' thing is actually a folder, containing folders, containing ....
my screenshot shows a backup or 'archive' of one of my recordings, on an extHDD, inside a folder.
to import such a camera-backup, I choose Import File in FCPX and click down to my backup, 'til this structure gets visible.
in case for whatever reason you have NOT copied the whole SDcards content, it looks like this:
these are the actual 'videos' inside the AVCHD structure (notice the loooong way to it in the breadcrumb down below)
mts is no video-codec, but a 'wrapper' or media-container - inside are the h264 encoded videos. to allow FCPX to import such files, they needed to be re-wrapped from mts>>mov (NOT converted!)
there are commercial solutions such as ClipWrap, or the free reMux tool

  • FCPX 10.2 identifies C100mkII AVCHD as interlaced

When I import Canon C100mkII media FCPX 10.2 identifies the clips as 29.97i - but they don't look interlaced.  When I set the project to assume the properties of the fist clip, the project has a frame rate of 29.97i.  Is this an issue with FCPX or with Canon internal CODEC?  Does anyone else notice this?  The media doesn't look interlaced, and the setting I chose in the C100mkII menu is AVCHD, 24Mb/s 1920 x 1080, 29.97p.
Thanks for any help - Stephen

    Hi Tom,
I could have set the project 1080p / 29.97, but instead I choose to let the project assume the first clips' properties, which I am still pretty sure is progressive, but next time I work with AVCHD clips from the C100mkII I'll choose the project properties manually.  When I do, how will that affect my clips?  Will they simply need to be rendered?  I'm very picky about quality and I try to use a workflow that doesn't unnecessarily process my clips; y'know - I don't want to convert them from something to something else unless it absolutely has to happen.
In the meantime, I'll be shooting on the Ninja 2, but another bummer (at least in my own opinion) is that the HDMI output is 59.94i and so the Ninja 2 is already employing a 2:3 pull-down, so to me, that's not as ideal as getting a true 29.97p signal out of the Canon C100mkII.  I've asked Canon to look into making that happen as it can output a true 60p (59.94p) in 1080, probably thanks to the Digic DV 4 processor, so why it can't do that for half the frame rate is weird.

  • Workflow using FCPX and AVCHD.

    Hi All,
I'm about to start on a new series of projects, and just wanted some clarification from people cleverer than I about the proposed workflow from the client (who knows as little about this as I do!).
The footage is to be recorded 1080i (Sony hxr-nx70e). The footage recorded in AVCHD onto SDHC cards. Those cards will then be sent to me. I would import the footage into FCP X directly from the cards through my Imac's SDXC inbuilt card reader (and in 'capturing' the footage I would save it - and the project to an external raid drive) then I edit away.
Now A) Does that workflow make sense?
and B) Will FCPX be able to see the footage and use it imediately without converting it?
Be really greatful for any help here. I think that's all correct but I just wanted to clarify before I tell them this suggestion would work.
    Thanks.
    Tim

The first thing you should domis use FCP to make an archive of the card onto a backup drive. Import from the archive. No need to wait for conversion, you can start editing immediately after you've selected the clips and closed the import window.

  • "AVCHD" gets choppy when I try to edit in "FCPX" ... should I import and optimize video or create a proxy media???

So I'm shooting some video on a Sony CX430
    60fps & 24fps
    Both on AVCHD format.
And working out of my MacBookPro
Processor 2.8Ghz (intel core 2 duo)
    Mem 8GB 1067 MHz ddr3
1TB hard drive Space (440GB actual free space right now)
im having trouble editing the video. the video becomes choppy and seems to drop frames. its no where near as smooth as when i play it back on the camera itself.
    1. should I be transcoding the files as I import them. ?
    2. And if so, which option.
       I. Create optimize media.  Or
      II. Crete proxy Media ?
once I have played and done some editing in FCP.X
    3. Do I need to buy and use a compressor to get them burned on to a Blu Ray or DVD. ?
    4. What is a good Blu Ray burner (external) I should use/buy?

#1 on my completely under powered MacMini, 2.26GHz/8GB, I'm noticing, it's faster to make the import/conversion a two-step process: step1 import, step2 after import select all clips, cmd-click, convert. If you import 'over night', I wouldn't care anyhow.....
#2 for stutter free edit, I prefer Proxies; … Optimize is only recommended when you use a seperate, ext. hard-drive, due to sheer amount of data (~220GBs/h)
#3 FCPX allows creation of DVD/BluRays - but: very simple ones, to be exact: two 'designs', just one Project, no fancy menus etc. 'Disk' isn't Apple's preferred delivery format for many years …
#4 I'm not burning disks; LG and Samsung seem to have a good track-record ...

I don't know what the "suggested settings" are. I always shoot at 50p.
I don't have the exact model here (520 something?), but my camera is not a professional one like yours.

  • How do I get AVCHD footage into FCPX?

I have a Panasonic HMC 150 HD camera that records in AVCHD. The files have an ".MTS" extension on them. I'm using Final Cut Pro X and trying to get the files to import using the "Import" function under "File." No luck. Do I have to convert these files using another program. If so, what's the best way to do the import without losing any quality?

One way I import older .mts flies I have stored on hard drives without archiving the complete folders and such (just the files) is using toast 10.
I go to make a blu-ray video disc, drag all the video MTS files I want to the new disc to make. I turn off menus and set automatic encoding. When I make a disc image I set it for DVD for the disc size as FCPX seems to like it over BD
Also it will not reencode the files if they are all they same format. I was doing this to add old footage in to imovie and it seems to be working with FCPX. Just mount the disc image and FCPX should see it as a camera archive disc.
Questions, just ask, sometimes I have trouble instructing.

  • Importing AVCHD files to Macbook Pro / FCPX for archiving

I recently bought the Sony HDR-cx570e videocamera and was quite upset when I found out how difficult the relation between the camera and my macbook pro was. (mid 2010 - running ML).
When the sd card reaches maximum capacity, I usually (with other cameras) just plug the camera or the card itself into my computer and "dump" the video or picture files in a selected folder for archiving.
I realized that this was not as easy with my new Sony camera. First of all, it stores all video files in one large "Private" file - which i know you can open up to find several MTS files, but I was hoping for separate mov files. Although this is obviously not the case with AVCHD cameras.
So, if I "dump" the whole Private file over to my macbook, I am able to open the whole file in quicktime  which then allows me to select which clip to view.t However, this results in a pretty messy archive system. With several "PRIVATE" files stored in one folder - not being able to catalogue the actual video files in any way. If i extract the MTS files from the folder, then suddenly quicktime cannot play them at all.
What is even more frustrating is how it works with Final Cut Pro X (FCPX).  I am able to open the "import from camera" function in FCPX, and import them as mov files (though losing my 5.1 sound to stereo). This works, in a way. I am able to get mov files from the material. But it is not a very archive friendly solution. (since i would wither have to move the material from the "original media" folders, or create an archive system within FCPX itself.)
Furthermore, FCPX is NOT able to import the "Private" folder itself. It needs to have the physical camera or SD card connected. In other words, I am not able to use any of my video files in FCPX if i have previously just copied the private folder from the card and on to the hard drive. Which puzzles me….
IN SHORT: I want to be able to just do a quick copy/backup of my video files that can be placed in a folder archive (like "vacations", "holidays", etc.) and at the same time be used with FCPX for future editing of the material. As I see it now.. this just won’t work.
So… any thoughts, ideas or help on this issue??

MacOS 10.8x shows the complex AVCHD structure, which includes the mts, as a single 'file'.
Which is a pkg - ctrl-click/'Show package content' and then dig deeper thru 3 other pkgs ....
To backup your recordings, just drag the whole card into any choosen location/folder on any of your harddrives - that simple.
For Archving in terms of data-base (what, where, when, who), select 'Import from Camera' and select any of your backups/'archives'.
In the following Preview, select the clips you like to file (all, few, one)
now, look at FCPX as any data-base: FCPX will automatically sort by date (Event) and pick up the basic 'exifs' (date, time, length, format, …). with a click, you can add place and 'face'/person/name. you can add your personal key-words (family, fish, fumbles) to tag any clip or part of clip for easier finding. finally, you can judge clips, put them in other Events, folding Events. To find clips, search for date or 'group name' (Events) or search for tags (birth, wedding, funeral/ma, pa, son/Ford, Ferrari, Bentley/winter, summer, spring/ … or whatever your sorting concept/keywords is.
a manual sorting of single mov/mts/… on Finder-level is
    a) obsolete, and
    b) old fashioned.
Tagging is much faster and more flexible ('find Grandma in all Events <2002')

  • FcpX en sony vg 20 (avchd); what about the 4 gig max.?

I am interesting in the sony vg 20 but am unsure about:
    1. what is the max. recordtime without any brake for a split second in it (caused by the max. gig?) by editting because i often record a whole theaterproduction and funeralservices. (now i use DV and I edit in the macbpro (4 gig ram) without any brake)
Thus: how does FCPX handle this because I won't switsch tot another edit program.
    2. I don't like first to change the rec.files (mts?) with another program. (I quess this cannot be good to the quality. Or am I wrong about this ands is the only disadvantage a timeconsuming workflow?)
    Thanks!

    Hi Tom,
So here I am again at the editing room. I started up the machine and, as it did before, the AVCHD files were listed as offline. I went to "reimport from camera" with proper camera card disk image mounted and available. I got this warning:
Then, slowly, after the media appeared about an hour later, (as it did last time) your method worked perfectly and the media-relinked.  Thank you, you wonderful genius!! I can relink the media, one library at a time. I still am not sure why or how it happened, here is how it looked in the Browser and when one right clicks on a file to select "reveal in finder" that option is grayed out.

  • FCPX not reading AVCHD files from DVD

    Hello to all,
I had made AVCHD disks of my Sony handy cam's footage using PMB [picture motion browser]. But when I tried to import these files from the DVD, FCPX would not accept these MTS files. Is not FCPX meant to deal with AVCHD?

Thanks for the info. The site you referred to has this:
'a user can burn 1080p60 video to Blu-ray or DVD after converting to 1080i'
I remember  PMB allowed users the choice of making AVCHD disks or [?] MPEG2 disks. I have just now inserted the disk I had burnt and got this info:
Next I opened the disk and got this info from one of the MTS files:
The description of the file states it to be: AVCHD MTS
So why is it that FCPX is not able to ingest this AVCHD MTS file?
