AVCHD Sony footage has lines in chroma key in FCP
My footage shot on with Sony Nex-fs700 will not chroma key with placing blue vertical lines in the final key. The line appear only after I render. My sequence settings match my footage. Can anybody help.

I shot in 1080 24p FX and I set the sequence to 24 fps and I was getting the vertical lines, flicker and lag in the image with any quick moments. So I created a new sequence and placed a test clip on the timeline and FCP asked if I wanted match my clip to the sequnce and I said no. I applied the color smoothing 4:2:2 and chroma key filters and played the clip and it was fine but still with the vertical lines. I then removed the color smothing 4:2:2 filter and no vertical lines. Still might send you a short clip just for kicks.
Yes I have After Effects and Motion and I will give them a try when I finish this project.

Need a solution for live chroma key in FCP to be output to the web. I am really new to FCP and wonder if there is a way to do live chroma key. I have a bunch of cameras D-9, DV, Beta, and a green screen stage and a DSL web link. Also, have a Kona AJA LHe card. If anybody has the time would appreciate some input.

Saw a demo of this at MacWorld from PixelCorps. Not sure they used FCP, but it was indeed all live and very good. Had an HV20 hooked up via HDMI to a decklink card and was cranking in some un-godly number like 190 mbits of dataflow. Beautiful keys.

Chroma Key for FCP on my wedding video
Hi, I have my wedding video I am trying to edit. I have a video clip of my wife walking in and I want to make her be in color and make everything else black n white. As the video piece has so many different colors in it how do I achieve this?
Ideally you need a rotoscoping application, such as Shake, Sillhouette, After Effects, Photoshop CS3 or higher, or Motion.
It might be possible to use multiple instances of the Chroma Keyer to generate a rough matte, but you will need a roto app to make it look convincing, plus a lot of time, skill and patience. -
Anyone try to Chroma Key in FCP X?
I do a lot of work with green screen and was wondering if anyone else tried this? Did this feature get streamlined too? I guess what I am hearing were my fears, that this was going to be a beefed up iMovie (which I don't like)

Plug-in or 3rd party for Chroma keying with DV footage
We shoot Betacam SP, captured to DV with a DSR-45P DV/DVCAM deck.
From what I learn on the web, green is preferred if you edit on DV, due to the color sampling. (4:1:1 for PAL?).
However, it also depends on what background you have. Use green if you are in the forest, use blue if you are at the beach. Sort of.
The built-in chroma keying in FCP is OK, but not more than that. What do you recommend using?
I've found the dVMatte from www.dvgarage.com - is it good?Just for DV media, the AdvantEdge plug-in from Ultimatte has a preset. It has a resampling method for 4:1:1 (or 4:2:0 if PAL) media like DV.

Now that I can produce 4.2.2 footage what difference should I see when using chroma key and has anyone got any good tips on creating a good chroma key in FCP-6
4:2:2 sampling will produce cleaner keys than 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 due to increased color sampling, but the real "key" to keying is lighting both background for "evenness" and forground for separation. lighting angle is critical in the composite so that the keyed object matches the background it is being composited on to achieve a "believable" composite

Chroma keying - Motion 5 vs Adobe: which is better?
Has anyone compared chroma keying with Motion 5 vs Adobe Premiere Pro cs5.5 or even Afer Effects cs5.5? Are the advanced features in M5 just as good as ultra keyer in Premiere Pro or Key light in AFter Effects?
I am looking to do vids with lots of green screen shoots. I am undecided if I should purchase FCPX +Motion 5 or the Adobe Production Premium (including Premiere Pro adn After Effects).Haven't tried it personally yet, but Alex Lindsay, who's company makes the super high-end keyer Conduit, says that Motion 5's keyer is amazing and they are having to rethink their product because of it.
So, it sounds like it's at least worth a $50 experiment to test it out. You can use it with FCPX or Premier. -

OK, a somewhat tricky question for you experts out there today ...
I have been handed 3 rolls of rushes from a studio which uses a green ring-type overlay system )attached to the camera lens). All rushes are pre-keyed, that is to say that the keying was done in the studio and the ready-mixed output was recorded to tape.
The background they used was wishy-washy, a mix of orange and burnt red - quite revolting, to be blunt. Due to the mix between the green ring keying light and the awful background, everyone in shot has a slight 'ring of confidence' about them ... a slight green 'tinge'.
In order to try and I remove this, I placed the rushes in V1 and I and slotted in a tiff of the original background into V2. Then, by selecting the chroma key in FCP, I clicked my dropper over a patch of green by the presenters ear. Thinking I could re-key the outlines (and then softening them up), I played around with the settings; luma, saturation, the colour itself, but to no avail.
I then tried the green suppressor. Again, nothing.
Does anyone have a good or at least feasible solution to this?

spIf the tiff file you have exactly matches the background - (the way to test is this is try cut the tiff into a small portion of the pre-composited clip and verify that there is no size, position, luma, chroma, gamma, etc. changes when the cut goes through, the foreground keyed element just cleanly disappears at the cut) then you may have some luck by using this -
On VI place the tiff
On V2 place your pre-composited clip.
Drag a Luma Key Video Filter on to the pre-composited clip on V2, open the filter tab for that clip and switch the Key Mode to Key Out Similar. You now should have some fudging ability by adjusting the threshold and tolerance. This may help minimize the green ring.

Vertical lines showing up after rendering chroma key on Canon 60D footage...
Ok so I am working with Final Cut Pro 7 right now and this is my first green screen attempt.
1) I shot the footage with my Canon 60D and did a log and transfer so I could make the H.264 files into Apple Pro Res 422, the correct method.
2) I then applied Color Smoother 4:2:2 , then Blue and Green Screen and selected green, then Spill Supressor, then Matte Choker, then Mask Feather. After tweaking the parameters throughout the filters I came out with a perfect image.
3) I then tried placing another ProRes video underneathe of the clip so that the video would show in place of the green. It worked and looked great.
HOWEVER
4) Upon rendering and playing back through the final image I noticed vertical lines running down the 60D footage. At first I thought it was the image underneath coming through, but even after removing the image and simply using chroma key until the green turned to black and rendering again, the lines were still present. Am I doing something wrong?

-Eric WidderThe HQ flavor of ProRes is overkill for this footage (I also have this model Canon), but that's not really important to fixing your problem.
Further to what Rv told you: I've long been advised by people who are savvy about keyers to avoid the stock FCP keyer and use the Primatte plug-in – and that's been my go-to tool. Recently, I tried the new keyer in Motion5 and was very impressed. I tested it on a project I'd been only OK about and found it made a huge difference. If you're going to do a lot of this kind of work, check it out. For $50 the keyer alone is worth it.

Logged and Transfered AVCHD footage has dropped frames or appears jerky.
Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.

COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

Green screen appears when I freeze frame chroma key video footage
I need to create a jpg/still image of the video I am producing. The video was shot with a green screen and edited with the chroma key effect and looks fine - but when I "Make a Freeze Frame" the green screen reappears in the image. Help!?
That should not happen.
Even if your sequence is unrendered or the clip wth the chroma key is selected on the timeline, it will normally export correctly.
Next step...
Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. -
I was wondering if any one knows how to use a camera to do chroma keying with a live feed. We want to make it look like the person is stand some where else live. Simalar to do the weather.
You need an external keyer. On the cheap side, there are things like the Videonics MX-4 SEG switcher, and, of course, the sky's the limit on the other side.

FCPX 10.1 Chroma Key Strength Slider Crash
Hello fellow users
I will apologize in advance as I am just the IT guy and am not well versed in editing lingo, but here it goes. My chief editor came to me with a problem that he has had since the first FCPX. I will post the crash report below, but I will tell you that I don't think hardware is an issue. I have reproduced this crash on everything from iMac and Mac Minis to Macbook Pros new and old. If it matters they are all rocking NVIDIA cards. We use a green screen chroma key and everything works swimingly until you attempt to adjust the slider for Strength. The keying effects are made in motion and executed in Final Cut. Upon attempting to adjust the slider, FCPX hangs for roughly 10 seconds and then ultimately crashes.
Here is everything I have tried (in no particular order, but I assure you I have been scanning forums for days and troubleshooting has been executed in the correct order)
1. Complete reinstall of Mavericks, also attempted on Mountain Lion
2. Complete removal and reinstall of FCPX, Motion, and Compressor (yes I used that FCP remover tool one time too)
3 Trashed preferences, saved application states, layouts, etc.
4. Rebuilt Key effects from scratch
5. Installed CUDA Drivers
6. Removed and/or reinstalled plugins (Sony XDCAM)
7. Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory.
8. Repaired Disk Permissions
9. Checked the Activity Monitor during crash for other CPU/GPU intensive processes
10. Deleted used and unused render files in FCPX
11. Set to optimize imported media (problem originally existed without it checked, checking did not fix, but I digress)
Below is the crash log for the event on the Macbook Pro that I use. I am basically looking for a fix or thoughts on anything my editors or myself may not have tried. Thanks for the help.

In the computers that are used primarily for editing we have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2 GB VRAM. They have 32 GB RAM. I just got hired on but when the op manager bought these (Late 2012) he basically fully speced them out. 1 TB Fusion Drive (which I would totally get if they are causing the issue) and the 3.4 GHz i7.
I just got in but I have the editor trying things out with my USB 3.0 Wallet drive. Really I am just looking for any improvement in efficiency as what I really want to do in the long term is pull out our old CAT5 cables, wire the building for 10 GBe, and set up an XTarget SAN.
Finally, in terms of video codecs we are using Sony XDCAM HD422, which I assume is ProRes. We are also working with graphics and videos that are not the same such as videos downloaded from the internet if that makes a difference. However the chroma key effect is only being placed on the footage from the camera. -
Multicam editing multiple chroma key background

I'm shooting and editing interviews with 3 cameras with a Chroma Key green screen.
Cam 1 - Wide angle shot, showing both the interviewer and the guest.
Cam 2 - The interviewer
Cam 3 - The guest
Now I need to do a multicam sync based on audio.
Then I have applied keyer effect to each and gets perfect chroma keying for each camera and had no problem editing using Angle Viewer.
Now my problem is ALL the backgrounds in Cam 1,2,3 are the same. It looks kind of weird.
How do I sync different background to each of the Camera with Chroma keyer and Multicam editing?

Hello, I have been asked to do a job editing some stuff shot on chroma key backgrounds and would be using there editing suite. I've never actually done this before but looking at a couple of tutorial videos on youtube it seems pretty straight forward. My understanding of the process so far is;
Make sure there aren't too many creases/drop shadows
Put the original footage in V2
Then effects - Video filters - key - chroma keyer
Eyedrop on the green background then move the sliders
Edgethin and soften the edges
Then the spill suppressor green/blue and do any cropping etc
Put the backgound in V1 and then you're done.
Obviously this is the basic process, but what I'm after with this message is any advice/tips, or common problems people come across when doing this. I will do a practice one before I do the job but don't have a green screen, how easy is it to do against a plain white wall?
