AVCHD support in FCS2 / Final Cut version 6?

Does the new version Final Cut studio 2 and Final Cut version 6 support the new harddrive cameras that record in AVCHD? .. both Sony and Panasonic has newly released cameras.
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I haven't seen a mention of this anywhere so I bet it doesn't. Of course it hasn't shipped yet so no real way of knowing.

  • What final cut version I can use it on PowerMac 5G?

What final cut version I can use it on PowerMac 5G, I am using:
    Power Mac 5G 7,3
    Processor: PowerPC G5 (2.2), Speed: 1.8 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2 L2
    Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 900 MHz Boot ROM

In January 2006, Apple stopped selling Final Cut Pro as a stand-alone product. In March 2006 the Universal Binary 5.1 version was released as part of Final Cut Studio. Upgrades were achieved by sending the original installation discs back to Apple with a fee. One noticeable difference is that the Intel versions of Final Cut and Motion no longer recognize After Effects plug-ins. Instead, Apple released its own universal plug-in architecture FxPlug.

I think you'll want to max it out to 4 GB of RAM though.

  • AVCHD, Panasonic SD9, and Final Cut Pro FRAME RATE! crashing!

Ok - I am still getting nowhere with hidef - esp AVCHD!
I purchased a brand new iMac, totally spec'd out, AND Final Cut Studio YESTERDAY.
I am trying to import AVCHD files - to no avail - crashes FCP.
I tried the work-around of using Voltaic, which converts to the AIC, and when I import THOSE files the video shows as 10fps. I cannot seem to get the correct settings to get the video to play back up to speed. The audio sounds correct, but the video is in slow motion. Can someone help me figure out how to use $3,300 of a new computer and software -that I bought in order to use a $800 camera? Am I crazy or what?
ALSO, iMovie 08 will NOT run AVCHD files - OR convert them, I tried, and that crashed TOO!
Apple has let me down, even though their tech assistant was very nice on the phone - there is STILL no solution. I cannot use FCP OR iMovie. How ridiculous!
    HELP PLEASE!

Thanks for your reply - but Perian 1.1 does not solve it at all - FCP still crashes upon attempting log and transfer..
My system is this: 10.5.2 OS
iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
And I have TODAY'S latest version of FCP.
Are you using the exact same camera? Or are you confusing it with the Panasonic HDC-SD5? I'm using the SD9 - tech support just sent me this article:
Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express: Unexpected quit with Panasonic HDC-SD9 AVCHD
Thanks again - I sure wish I could use my 800$ camera and 3,300$ hardware and software!

  • Comparing video quality of AVCHD BluRay discs using Final Cut Pro Share vs Compressor

Up front, I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to using Final Cut Studio 3 and would appreciate some feedback from the Apple forum experts.
I have spent a lot of time trying to determine how to achieve an optimum group of Compressor 3.5.2 settings so that the playback video quality of an AVCHD BluRay disc is equal to or better than one created by using the simpler auto settings of FCPro Share, version 7.0.2.
When using Compressor’s auto/default maximum settings, I experienced the same error message reported in:
Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12073794#12073794
I have since made some Compressor AVCHD Discs with smaller bit rate settings and compared video quality with a single FCP Share AVCHD disc.  Both seem to be equal in providing a very good video when viewed on my new Panasonic DMP BDT 310 BluRay player. However, the Compressor AVCHD discs show some motion artifacts not present with the FCPro Share version, especially when scrolling text or when objects are moving through the field of view, and visible artifacts are seen from a stationary chain link fence and other lattice work in the background of the video sample.
My sample video used for the comparisons between Compressor and FCP Share discs is a 21 minute duration home movie, originally captured from a mini DV, Canon HV30 1080i camcorder using ProRes HQ encoding(1440x1080), and dragged into FC Pro 7.0.2 timeline where 10 chapter markers have been inserted.
To create an AVCHD disc using FCPro Share, Markers are used to set the IN and OUT points, Select IN to OUT from the timeline, pull down File Menu Share, Select Create BluRay from options in pop out Share pane, and designate output device along with picture files for Background, Logo, and Title options. When these are completed, click on Export.  My 21-minute video required almost two hours for encoding including about 10 minutes for burning. This accomplished on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
To prepare this same 21-minute video for use with Compressor, I again Select IN to Out from the FCPro timeline, but this time use File Export as a QuickTime Self Contained movie including Chapter markers. Then Open Compressor, choose Create BluRay from Template pane, right click on the down arrow in the Batch window and load the QT self contained movie file. From there I went to the Inspector window and tried various combinations of bit rate settings along with Frame Encoder options such as Better or Best motion parameter controls.
I have tried the following combinations of Bit rate settings along with varying Frame Encoder controls and burned an AVCHD disc for each example:
    Example A
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings OFF. Approximately 4 hours to encode although the time remaining estimator indicated a larger value of ~7 hours; not an accurate estimator at all.
    Example B
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motionadaptive)” settings. Approximately 4 hours to encode, not the 13 hours that were estimated.
Conclusion: Comparing A & B Compressor versions, Disc B showed some improvements in reducing motion artifacts over Disc A.
    Example C
Compressor set to 13 Mbps Average and 15 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. DeInterlace was checked. Unknown hours to encode; about 8 hours done overnight..
Conclusion: Disc C showed some minor improvements reducing motion artifacts over Disc B
    Example D
Compressor Auto settings,i.e., 15 Mbps Average and 17 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. Approximately 12 hours to encode, done overnight. Inserted disc next morning after the overnight encoding was completed, and a few minutes later an error message pane appeared that the maximum bit rate had been exceeded.  This message was consistent with the Apple posted thread referenced above. Unfortunately the long overnight encoding was wasted.
It seemed to me that the best Compressor settings for suppressing the motion artifacts were displayed by the disc burned in Example C, i.e.,  13/15 Ave/Max Mbps with“Better” Motion settings in the Frame Encoder.
However, when this disc was compared to the AVCHD Disc burned using the FCPro Share, the latter still seemed much better. I do not know what the auto bit rate values are as set in FC Pro, but for me, the quality is quite good AND the motion artifacts are significantly reduced, especially evident with the scrolling text.
Sorry about this long post, but I thought the detail would be necessary for the experts, and maybe helpful to others trying to get started in this BluRay arena.  Did I misuse Compressor?  I think the sample video exported as a self contained QT movie was the right thing to do?  Not sure where I went wrong.
Thanks in advance for Feedback and Recommendations.  For now, I’m going to stay with the simpler process using Final Cut Pro Share function.
    BoBo

Thank You, Brad, for responding;  glad to hear I'm not the only one having similar Compressor issues.
You may have hit on something.  Perhaps Compressor's use of H.264 encoding was the reason for my motion artifacts?  And perhaps Final Cut Pro Share retains the 1440x1080 quality as it burns the AVCHD BluRay disc?
I had Toast 10 for less than 30 days a couple of years ago, and was lucky to get a refund.
What version of Toast do you have?  Wondering if new Toast 11 has improved previous bugs, especially upgrading its Chapter text, pictures, music.  I would go back to Toast if it came close to mirroring DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD capabilities.
    Thanks,
    BoBo

  • Exporting AVCHD to mp4 from final cut for uploading to youtube (apple prores, .MOV, h264, x264, handbrake)

    Hello everybody,
I Edit 1920x1080 AVCHD in Final Cut 7. Working with apple prores to export video to mp4 and then upload it to youtube. The goal is obviously the least quality loss in the process and to get a file as light as possible. Which of these three options is correct?
    1. Export to mp4 from Final Cut (using quicktime conversion): h264 codec and bitrate 8000 kbps.
    2. Export to .MOV from Final Cut (using quicktime conversion): h264 codec. Then, use handbrake (mp4 / x264 ).
    3. Export apple prores sequence to. MOV from Final Cut (using quicktime movie). Then, use handbrake program (mp4 / X264 codec)
    thanks a lot!

One friend told me dont choose none of the three options...
Told me about exporting a reference movie from timeline and then take the reference file into compressor.
I finally took the reference file and took him to compressor. I installed x264 and got one .mov very heavy, so I had to use the handbrake to get less weight and get mp4.
I did the same operation in streamclip and got a mp4 file (x264) with same size than .mov (compressor). So in both cases, if I want the less size I have to go on 2 steps (first compressor or streamclip and then handbrake ..)
    any more suggestions? :-)

  • How to put on the files of the camera Sony Avchd hdr-td10 for Final Cut Pro 6.0.6?

Sorry for my English, I am French. I would like to know if the camera Sony Avchd hdr-td10 is compatible with Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 to List and Transferer and if it is necessary to install a particular codec? This camera makes of the 3D but I specify that my rushes are in 2D. Thank you in advance.

Read this. (Also available in French from the "Aide" menu bar item)
If the files are not recognized because Sony made some changes to the AVCHD format, MPEG Streamclip (free) might be able to help. Clipwrap ($50) will definitely work.

  • Compatibility of Final Cut Versions

    Hello,
I am an international TV Production student and have to edit my final documentary. So far, this is not really a problem, but the situation is, that I have to edit most of my work in Uni on the Macs there and the Final Cut Pro version, which they use is 6.0.4.
Just about a couple weeks ago, I have bought my own MacBook Pro and Final Cut, but the Version on my laptop is 6.0.5.
The footage is shot on a Panasonic HVX-500 in the DVC Pro format.
I would like to edit as much as possible in Uni on the Macs there and just in case if I am not able to finish it there, finish it off at home. My question now is, are these to versions compatible? Or is there anything I can do to adjust my version of Final Cut Pro to the 6.0.4 version - basically downgrade?
It would be very helpful if somebody could answer my question, because otherwise I will have a massive problem.
Thank you so much in advance.

#45 - Opening projects with older versions of FCP
Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to export your project to work with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro.
Versions of Final Cut Pro aren't backwards compatible. So a project created with FCP 6 cannot be opened with FCP 5...and this even goes into the dot-updates as well. A project created with FCP 5.1.4 cannot be opened by FCP 5.1.1.
Nope, for this you need to use XML. Export your sequence as an XML sequence and import that in the other version of FCP. XML v3 if for FCP 5.1 4 and FCP 6. XML v2 is for FCP 5.0, and XML v1 is for FCP 4.5. So if you need to go from FCP 6 to FCP 5.0.4, you'd use XML v2.
To export an entire project, select ALL the bins in the Browser and then choose FILE>EXPORT>XML.

  • Which Final Cut Versions will work on my iMac G5 (iSight) and which won't??

I have a copy of Final Cut Pro and it installs fine but when i go to open it, it says that i do not have an AGP graphics card and will not work. (I have the standard card that comes with an iMac G5 (iSight)). I have looked on the web and found conflicting informatiom about which cards can run it. I have also been told that FCP 5 will not run on an iMac G5 but that FC HD will. Can anyone tell me the REAL answer??

I have also been told that FCP 5 will not run on an iMac G5 but that FC HD will.
who ever told you that was wrong
FCP 5 is designed to work with the PCI-e graphics cards
you have to hack FCP 4.5 to get it to work with the PCI-3 graphics cards

  • I need to convert AVCHD to work with Final Cut Studio

I recently purchased a Sony HD camcorder only to discover it records in AVCHD which is not supported by apple FCS.
Also apple is not supported by sony so the software that came with the camera does not work with my Mac Pro.....
Is there any way i can convert AVCHD files on my mac to work with FCS??
    Thanks lee

This probably doesn't answer your question but I'll chime in.
I have the Sony SR1 camera. I'm not sure if that's the one you have. Anyway, I purchased the Blackmagic Intensity card for $250, now I can capture directly from the camera into whatever codec you want. Well almost. At least you have the option of using Uncompressed, DVCProHD, ProRes etc.
I tried editing AVCHD natively using Vegas, but that's not the way I want to work. I also havent found any decent way of converting the files. It's a huge headache. I'm not sure I'd want to edit AVCHD native anyway. It's pretty processor intensive, and I just don't see much of a difference between the files the camcorder captures, and transcoding them upon capture through the Intensity card.

  • Can a MacBook Air support apps like Final Cut Pro and Aperture?

I was thinking of getting a new Mac in the future and the Airs are nice.  Can they run FCPX and Aperture with no issues?

There is a recall on that year:

If it's running fine (or will be) you could upgrade to an SSD and max the RAM from OWC:

  • Final cut version 10.0.6 crashes every time I put my hard drive in... when it's already in and I click on final cut, it opens for a few seconds, then 'quits unexpectedly'

Someone please help me, trying to edit a project for college and I literally can't. I don't understand why it's not working, I've been on utilities and checked the hard drive and there's nothing wrong with it and I've made sure there is enough space on the drive.

Have you tried trashing the preferences?
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • AVCHD--1920x1080 24p native--final cut express

New to FCE and video. I shot a bunch of video on a Canon HFS 21 in 1920 x 1080 24p native. I am trying to import it into FCE, but it looks like FCE wants me to degrade my video to import it and edit. Same goes for some video I shot with my Canon Mark IV, which was also 24 p. Is there anyway to work with FCE and 24p native or do I need to upgrade to FCS? Thanks in advance.

I just got a Panasonic GH2 which can shoot in 1080p24 and I edit with FCE. What I have figured out is that if you just use a 29.97fps timeline, it plays the 24fps video fine. Then when you export the project at the end, just export back to 24fps and it should line back up with the original 24fps of the video you shot and not skip or duplicate any frames.
The one thing that might be a problem is that when you tell FCE to export at 24fps, it actually does what I think is a pull-down and exports at 23.98 fps. This may mean that once in a great while there is a dropped frame. If you do the same thing but use a 25fps timeline in FCE the actual exported rate is 24.04 I think. This is worse as there will be duplicate frames twice as often.
If you are concerned about the dropped frames with using the 29.97fps timeline in FCE, export to a lossless (or near lossless) format at 29.97fps (ie by not using "Quicktime Conversion"), then post process the result in JES De-interlacer (free), using "standards conversion" to convert the video from 29.97 to 24fps (use telecine mode, not blend). This will resample the frame rate to exactly 24fps and you should be good. Link:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
I have noticed some weird jumpy stuff if I slow down a 24p clip in FCE where the camera was panning left and try to fight that by moving the clip right on the canvas (the faster frame rate of the FCE motion keyframe move fighting the slower frame rate of the original video moving in the opposite direction), but I assume that would also happen with 30p or 60i video in that situation if you slowed it down enough - just the 24fps video is making it more obvious at less extreme speed reductions.

  • Will final cut express support my camcorder eventually

I purchased a canon hv20 and it is not a supported device with final cut express yet and I was wondering that since the hv 10 is if the hv20 will supported soon also?

There are thousands of cameras out there but only a handful on the supported lists.
This is because it would use up all Apple's profits and time to test every one of them - an impossible task. New cameras are being introduced all the time.
Pretty well all DV cameras with FireWire outputs will work with FCE.
The best thing people can do is ignore those lists as they cause more trouble and confusion than they are worth.

to allow final cut express hd (3.01) to run as "any user" (in our case we are having users login with AD integration) and NOT have the issue of "At least 1 easy setup file..."
    do the following:
    login as admin
make "system" owner the folder (and all contained):
    /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Express Support/Custom Settings
resolves the issue. it appears when FCE HD is installed as admin and run for the first time, the Custom Settings folder is created with the Easy Setup file installed - BUT it is owned by "admin". when anyone (other than admin - or an admin) logs in, they cannot access that folder and therefor cannot get to the easy setup file.
i tested this and it works. for any OS X users with a lab, FCE HD out there, this is the fix. hope it keeps a few people from pulling their hair out like me.
