AVCHD to FCP big file size?

I know it says that converting to Apple Pro Res codec will increase file size by 4 times using log and transfer in FCP, but I've converted using the Apple intermediate codec which is supposedly the lesser of the two, and what was originally 25g worth of original media is now 150g in the new quicktimes. 6 times the size??!
Is there anything that can be done? Thank you very much
Nick

Convert to ProRes instead of AIC. It's a much more efficient codec. Oh yeah ... buy some more hard drive space.

  • FCP - Massive file size problem.

So I've been exporting out a 21min sequence out of fcp 7.  In past edits and on the same project file, the export has been fine, rendering out at a healthy 6gb.   But recently the final file size has become 29gb.  This is obviously not right.  My question is, what is going on and how can I fix it?
The only thing that has changed is I've done a color grade (from Color).  So some of the files are different,  but the new color graded clips aren't any bigger than the origianl ones, so I don't think thats the problem.
Another random thing that happend is:  When exporting I give the file a name, e.g. Helloworld   And I select show file extension.  The weird thing is when it's completed its export, the file name then becomes Hellowordmov.mov   I have not idea where that extra mov is coming from, (and it doesnt appear when I select show file extension).  What is going on here?
Below are my sequence settings.  I chose File -  Export -  Quicktime Movie...  And keep it on Current Settings.
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • Strangely Big File Size

I don't understand why some of my Pages files are so big. I have a series of about 20 reports, all produced from the same template. They are generally about six to eight pages, have a couple of tables, maybe a few MathType equations, and the occasional graph. Two-thirds of them are in the neighbourhood of 2.2 MB and the rest are about 200 KB. The smaller size makes sense for this type of report. Why the big ones? I've looked through the files but can't find anything to explain the differences. I also find a Reduce File Size choice under the File menu but it is dimmed. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Back to 200 KB. Peter was right. I guess, for those of us who've used templates fairly frequently, it might mean going through a bunch of files and purging that stuff. Not that space is a big issue for many people anymore, but I kind of feel that bloated files represent a kind of waste.

  • Big file size

Hi. I notice some of my files are 8 times bigger than others.
Average size for some books is 250 kb. Similar files in other books is 2000plus.
    I import referenced graphics.
Graphics sizes are tiny (16 kb, 8 kb, etc)
Only 1 or 2 graphics per file.
    Number of pages similar (5-10)
Any idea why some are so big and others arent?
Any idea how to down size the big ones??
    Thanks

    Mike,
The Save FrameImage option forces FM to always embed an uncompressed
copy of any referenced image in FrameImage format. This is a sure fire
    way to bloat your file.
Note, if you have any OLE objects, then they will also be stored
    internally in an uncompressed manner.
The surest way is to save one of the small files and one of the big
files as MIF and then use either a text editor or Graham Wideman's
    MifBrowser (see
    http://www.grahamwideman.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm tool to
inspect for imported graphics to see if it's just a link to a file
name or if some image or vector facets are actually embedded.

  • TDMS big file size

I have been using .csv files to store my data.  Since I have a long time test to do, I begine to learn using TDMS files to save hard disk space.  But I found it generates two files, one of them is a index file.  Both are big sizes.  Any one is about 8 times greater than .csv file within first 2 hours.  TDMS files are supposed to be small size on disk.  I must have done something wrong?

is TDMS more fasted as binary files ?
    it depend !!
it depend how you build your binary file.
If you make a simple binary modèle (ex : double) the tdms file is very much faster in writing, and very solwer on reading.
After a deframentation, the tdms is faster in reading.
When you create a complex binary file with size reservation, the binary file is faster.
(increase a file size need a lot of time, so increase it for a big value, write all your date, and at end schrink the file to the good size).
For more a 1 channel it can by comple to developp this binary modèle, but a have tested it and it always more faster as tdms (in read or write and befor or after deframentation).
Other consideration, the TDMS driver lost memory when you don't record datablock with the same size.
ex : you use hight spped daqmx channel, low speed channel and serial data.
    ex : 5 channel at 10000 sample/channel/cycle and 10 channel at 20 samples/channel/cycle and 30 channel at 1 sample/channel/cycle
    (typiquely SCADA value)
    during my test i lost 2Mb/h (i don't remeber the CAR number,sorry).
With same datablock, you have no problem.

  • After Effects Fails to render due to a big file size?

I recorded some video clips in a x264 codec (AVI) and well since i cant import them into AAE (it wont recognize them) i just did some editng wit sony vegas and  rendered the full video in 1080p uncompressed and it was about 20 GB's total. i added it into AAE to add some color corrections and RAM preview worked normally but when i tried to render it out in blu ray format it would fail within 4 seconds of rendering. i tried other formats and it wouldnt work i even tried to take off the color correction thinking that was it but still failed. is after effects not stable with such heavy file sizes?
or could it be my ram isnt engough (3 gb's) im upgrading to more soon though.
any help would be apreciated so i know what to do in the future thanks a lot.

The total file size is not really relvant.
The important part is the per frame memory usage.
Which OS are you using? RAM starvation can be worse in Win XP 32, since the total available RAM for all applications combined is 2.7 GB.
Try this - render the Comp to a lossless format (such as Quicktime Animation, huge file but you can delete it afterwards), and then close AE and launch Adobe Media Encoder in standalone mode and try to encode using your Blu-Ray preset from AME.

  • FCP file sizes are twice the size of Quicktime's - any advantage to FCP?

When I capture footage from my Canon HV40 MiniDV using FCP, the file sizes are almost twice the size as when I capture using Quicktime's Device Native setting. Is there any advantage to capturing with FCP, as the quality seems the same in QT? Or is there a way to reduce the file size being captured in FCP?
I'd like to be able to capture in FCP because if there is a dropped frame in the recording, Quicktime stops recording, whereas FCP keeps going and starts a new file. But the larger file size in FCP puts me off.

Not all codecs are editable...meaning, not all work in an editing application. I'm not sure what "device native" captures as in QT. Does it say in GET INFO? But FCP captures HDV and DV native, but in a native format that it can work with. HDV comes in as HDV...Dv as DV.
I wouldn't trust what QT is capturing as DEVICE NATIVE. And 13GB/hour of footage is not that much. That's the lowest data rate format out there.

  • Binary file is too big in size

    Hi,
I wrote a simple VI to do playback of sound files and to record signals. It seems to do what I want (although I appreciate general feedback on good programming habits). The bigger issue I have is that the binary file it is saving is way too big in size. A few seconds of recording gives a few megabytes of data. Although I can open the binary file in matlab and analyze the data just fine, the big file size doesn't sound right.
Does anyone know why this is the case? I tried saving the data in something other than doubles, but it still gives large file sizes. Played around with the byte order too without much success. Any help is appreciated (LV 2009 file attached).
    Thanks.

If your DAQ unit is 16 bit or less, simply store data as I16. you store data as DBL and that is 8 bytes pr number. It is no problem making wav files in I16 format. However wav files (in Labview at least) is not a compressed. So the file size will be much bigger than MP3 files that is a compressed file format.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted

  • Final Cut Pro exporting Quicktime movie and file size

I make short stop motion animations in FCP and usually when I export using current setting the file size is about 230MB for 60 seconds movie. However with the current project the exported quicktime movie file is only 32.1MB for 57 seconds movie. I don't think this is normal even though I set it with "current setting" and check off the make movie self-contained box.
How could I make the export setting back to normal so the exported quicktime movie will still be in high quality in a big file size?

    Hi Ian,
it looks clear and same quality as usual. Maybe this is just how it is.
I am still worried because I exported another project to test and this one also is now exported into reduced file size. This is a 60 seconds movie and when I last exported, FCP created a 225.2MB quicktime file and when I exported exactly the same project again just now it is only 22MB... again, this is not self-contained movies.
To be honest with you I am really not familiar with digital settings, and I was trying to figure out export setting for a required file size and aspect ratio etc. for a projection the other day and it has been since then that my FCP started exporting smaller size QT files.
My project is in 4:3 ratio and all images on video sequence are digital still images. If you could kindly point out some places to look at to make sure that the settings are correct, that might be helpful (?)
    thanks much!

  • Folio article file size increases massively with more buttons

    Hello,
we are about to finish up a DPS project and now have some serious problems with the folio sizes.
We did all the usual things to make folios smaller (cropped every image to the trimmed size, pdf articles, vektor overlays etc.)
So we made some tests and discovered a really strange behavior:
We have one single article with a fullscreen MSO containing 7 picture status, and seven buttons (with the same pictures as thumbnails) that lead to the appropriate statuses.
First we tried to experiment deleting images from the MSO but this had no effect on the file size. But as we deleted the seven buttons the file size changed from 10MB to 52MB!
The size of all the assets (images and ID file) from this article is only 12 MB.
Is this a known bug? Is there a way around it? It is some kind of crazy when an uploaded folio has 4 times the size as all his assets?!?!
    Thanks in advance,
    nils

    Hi Bob,
    sorry for my late reply.
I have done some additional testing and came to the conclusion that no button is responsible for the big file sizes.
It was the overlay setting after all (sorry for pointing in the wrong direction). As I switched the slideshow from "Raster" to "Vector" the file size decreased plenty. (I thougt I checked this but actually I did it only in vertical articles.)
However I did not know that the export format has such an impact on file size. This one article decreased from 52 MB to 17 MB. And it was only one slideshow with 7 (retina) images inside.
Changing all the slideshows in our 50 article folio (about 35) decreased the file size from 576 MB to 243 MB!
    Thanks,

  • Crazy File Sizes - Help!

    Hello,
I have a multi-part question about multi-page PDFs.  Two things are happening to me quite a lot with Acrobat and PDF creation, and I need some help figuring out what's going on.
    Thing 1:
I will receive a bunch of scanned music, each page scanned separately as a separate PDF ... and each one sent in its own separate email, resulting in 30-40 emails at a time ... from another user.  Each PDF page that gets sent to me tends to be somewhere around 500K.  My task is to use Acrobat to combine the incoming scans into a multi-page PDF.  The actual creation of the multi-part PDF is no problem.  Getting Started > Combine Files into PDF is a straightforward move, and that's what I do.  But the resulting multi-page PDF is HUGE.  I've tried optimizing, I've tried saving it as a Small PDF ... neither of those things do much at all.  I'm seeing file sizes around 5,000K by the time I'm done with an average-sized multi-page instrumental part (about 5-6 pages of music).
A big file size isn't necessarily a big deal, but I have to distribute these multi-pagers via email (that is the only electronic format that doesn't feel like alien technology to the people on the distribution list) and sending these big files in emails tends to be problematic.  Slow downloads, file size limits exceeded, etc. ... this big file size thing is really annoying.
I suspect the massive file size is caused by how the initial user scanned in the pages of music, but I can't control what the initial user does; I just have to work with what arrives.  Is there any way that I can fix this?
    Thing 2:
I noticed that when I used the basic set-up at Fedex/Kinkos and, using a scanner and Acrobat, scanned 8.5 x 11 copies of some music as a black and white document, combining my scans into one PDF as I went and optimizing them, a file that would have been around 6,000 K coming from the other initial user and being paged together by me ended up being 568 K using this method.
When I used my camera as a impromptu scanner and used the CamScan application to take a picture of a document and save it as a PDF, I was getting pretty ridiculous file sizes, 400-500 K a page.  Sam issue as with the PDFs coming from the initial user.
What is going on?  Is there something in the scanning method that affects how big the file is?  Is a flatbed scanner and Acrobat the only way to get small PDF sizes?
Thanks for any help you can provide...

yes it dus thanx so much.. man i dont no y i didnt see that in the first place :p i must be blind

  • How to export in a small file size in FCP7 ?

    Hi,
    I'm filming with a GoPro camera on 720p 60fps.
resulting files are MP4 files wich I convert to Apple ProRes files.
Now when I want to export my movie, it has a VERY big file size..!
Can anyone tell me how to export my movie in a smaller file size.
It doesn't has to be the smallest file size, just small enough so I can upload it on the internet etc.
    Thanks very much,
    Yannick.

Export a reference video (command-E, current settings and "self-contained" should not be marked.
Then import to compressor, use one of the h.264 settings... Start with the LAN setting and go from there.

  • Reduce File Size and Optimise PDF both increase file size

    Hi All
I have exported a pdf (our college mag) at smallest file size from Indesign CS4 for online use. The problem is the resultant file size is a little under 19Mb. Using both or either Reduce File Size or Optimise functions simply result in an increase to 22Mb. The document is packed with images however I would have thought one or both of these processes would have helped reduce the file size to a more manageable download file size.
A pdf is also produced to go to print so simply compressing all images prior to imcuding them in Indesign is not a preferable option - this would mean creating two separate Indesign documents, something which I would rather avoid if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.
The file reside here if anyone cares to take a look http://www.ayrcoll.ac.uk/index.php?name=UpDownload&req=viewdownload&cid=11&orderby=dateD  It's the latest release (September 09)
    Thanks

You might want to do an audit of the PDF (button in PDF Optimizer) and try to figure out what the various parts are. It shows 58% is content streams (sorry, but I am not sure what that is), 26% is overhead, and only 12.7% is graphics. Since you are not storing bookmarks and such, you might want to try going back to ID and printing to the Adobe PDF printer for a comparison. It may be one technique is more efficient than the other.
When I used the optimizer, the file did get larger. When I used Reduce File Size, it got slightly smaller. The key may be in figuring out what the various parts are from the audit. You might try copying one page of ID to a new document and play with various versions - different fonts (all were embedded and that is probably best), variations on graphics, etc. That is all I can suggest since I would simply be playing with different ways to produce the document and looking at what is causing the bloat. When the Images are only 12.7% and the fonts less than 1%, there is something going on to produce the size, and those 2 are typically the killers. I would mention tags that tend to bloat, but you do not have any (normally used for assessibility).
You might want to try some of the preflight checks to find issues. I did the transparency check and got 170 instances in 22 pages. Flattening the page may help. There were some pages that seemed to be very bad. However, I did not get a big file size reduction. I did not get a lot of improvement by printing to a new PDF either. Certain pages seem to be part of the bloat problem. The print took a long time around pages 11 and 22.
One troubleshooting technique would be extract pages to separate files and look at the details of each page to see what is causing the issue.
    Need to go. Good luck.
