Try to stress your RAM with MemTest lychgate, then I'm sure you will find that it is not stable.
Anything over about 330MHz FSB gives me RAM error in MemTest, even with 5-5-5-15 and 1:1 divider on PC2-6400 with 4-4-4-12 as standard timings.
Trust me, it just seems stable...
You mean with the 1.5b3 bios? Well, I use orthos and superpi to test stability, and they don't give me any errors, even with 450FSB (wich I'm currently using) . Which number of memtest is giving you errors?
I think that I'll test it with memtest now, to be sure.

  • Poor Overclock With E4300 And P965 Platinum

I have recently built a Core 2 Duo system based around the P965 Platinum motherboard which I bought based on the excellent reviews it appears to have received.
    My system is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E4300 with standard cooler
    MSI P965 Platinum
    ATI X1900GT
    1GB Kingston DDR2 667 Valueram
    2xWD 160GB Hard Disks in RAID 0
Antec Sonata II case with Smartpower 450W PSU.
I initially tried overclocking to 266FSB which worked flawlessly. All I did was slow the memory slightly so it wasnt overclocked. It worked beautifully, including Speedstep functionality and in SiSoft Sandra beat the E6600 comfortably which runs at a similar speed.
As soon as I try to go above this speed the system wont boot and all the fans run at their maximum. It doesnt even POST.
I have tried disabling speedstep etc, and increased voltages slightly. I also slowed the memory further so it is running at 1:1 ratio (532MHz at 266FSB), but I still cannot get past 266FSB.
    Any suggestions?
I also note that the board does the strange start-stop thing from cold, and if it has been left off for a long time the screen is scrambled when I start it. Any suggestions on these?
    Cheers,
    James

    You're not alone..
My fighting with this motherboard began the first moment I put my brand new E4300.
This is the absoluto WORST motherboard in the Galaxy for the E4300, and the reasons, I should explain shortly (I hope someone at MSI is reading this and DO SOMETHING about it)
    The short version:
There are 3 straps for configuring the speed of each processor on the Intel family.
the 800 strap, the 1066 strap and the 1333 strap,  these are the straps working on the 4000 and 6000 family of core2
When you're in the 1066 strap, the motherboard configures the PCI lock correctly and you can safely clock the board from 266 to even 370 or 450 in some cases with the latest BIOS and good MCP voltage... but.
When you're in the 800 strap like me (all E4300 are in the 800 strap)  the motherboard incorrectly identify the information and it simply DOES NOT LOCK the PCI bus speed correctly...
Conclusion:  when you excede 266 Mhz speed you already have the PCI clocked so far away from the standard speed, that really is a divine grace that the motherboard boots.. and if it does.. you will have a corrupted HD or you may even lost some PCI card to this.. so... it is really DANGEROUS to set any speed higher than 240-250 for this strap on this motherboard.
Sure, there are alternatives you may ask... yes,  all gigabyte motherboards and the P5B series correcly identify the 800 strap (200fsb) and Lock the PCI so you can overclock to hell with that one... not on this motherboard.
There IS an alternative... the alternative is to PIN MOD the processor (remember the Conductive Pen?) to FORCE the motherboard into believeing that you have in effect, a 266 (1066Mhz) processor and then, configuring the strap accordingly..
    well... no.
It works on the 99% of the motherboards I tried (yes, I did that mod succesfully and unlocked the 1066 strap, booting with 266 bus on a P5B, a 680i SLI and even a 570 SLI motherboard,  with a MINIM clock of 3.2Ghz, what do you think?)
    BUT
and is a very great BUT,  NOT with this motherboard.
For some brilliant idea of the MSI engineers, the motherboard start up at 266Mhz and then it clearly tells you that this is in fact a 200Mhz processor,  then, a BIOS halt ocurred and you have a corrupted CMOS setup,  the only way to stop from losing the motherboard is to install another processor and re-flash it...
so even forcing a 1066Mhz strap is a NO GO with this motherboard that REFUSES to take information from the SAME PINOUT the rest of the motherboard makers follow to regulation and in fact WORKS and reads the information from the clock the processor gives, so.. we are stuck with a NO GO situation.
The latest bios i tried is the 3.6 bios (BETA) and this problem persist.
So,  with the P965 the long story became short at the end,  we are stuck in the WORST of the Galaxy motherboard for E4300 overclocking till MSI at least give us the freedom to choose the strap or just use the one that is detected. Until then...  that's it.
I hope this message reaches MSI,  I work for a hardware page that do reviews and you can imagine what I should say about this motherboard....

Thanks, that does make sense based on what I am seeing.
Is there a way of confirming the PCI bus speed is increasing with clock speed?
This seems like it should be simple for MSI to sort?

    Hi all,
I have run with the above hardware specification since Jan 2007 without experiencing any hardware problems at all. Two weeks ago I upgraded the CPU from an E6700 dual-core to a Q9550 quad. I was a little concerned about doing this, because the P965 supports a max FSB of 1066 and the Q9550 is rated at 1333. In any case, I Googled around and found that some flavours of the Q9550 had been tested on my mobo (http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/P965_Platinum_(MS-238).html) and also MSI list the Q9550 stepping C1 as being compatible so I took the leap.
Early indications were good - Vista detected the new chip and I rebooted when prompted. However, in the space of two weeks I have experienced  around one or two BSODs per day STOP 101 or 124 codes. Hmm!
I have switched back to my trusty E6700 chip and the system is then as solid as a rock. I see 3 possibilities here:
1.The Mobo website (MSI P965) lists the Q9550 stepping type C1 as being compatible. There is no mention of E0 or C0 which seem to be the other two variants. I have no idea which stepping type mine is as the product numbers for the Q9550 chips are all the same (EU80569PJ073N or BX80569Q9550) regardless of whether it is a C0, C1 or E0 stepping. Is there any way to tell which on I have - I tried with CPU-Z but didn't spot the stepping type? In any case, could this be the problem or am I off-base?
    2. It's possible I have a faulty chip. How likely is this do you think? I could ask for a swap with Novatech but could be back in the same boat, and they will reject the return unless it is 'proven faulty'.
    3. I need to mod the clocking on my rig to support the Q9550. If so, can anyone advise on what I should do?
I doubt the problem is caused by an OS factor as I ran some tested in an XP pre-boot environmet and still got the lock-ups.
What should I do? i don't really want to ebay the chip at say a £50 loss if i can help it.
    Many thanks in advance.

No, the OEM Order Code is different, and the sSpec Number also.

If enabling EIST would cause OC unstable, that means this OC setting is unstable after all. What EIST does is to reduce the multiplier back to 6x during idle, it also set the CPU Core Voltage LOWER.
I don't have this P965 Platinum board to test out, the temperature thing definitely can be fixed, by next BIOS release hopefully. Del UK, did E6600 temp. report correctly?
    Hi Maesus,
Yes, temps reported ok with E6600 and speedstep could enabled and disabled.  Could see difference from standard to OCing at 3.4Ghz.
Had similar issues with Prescott on the PT880 Version 1 when that came out and was solved with a few bios updates.....
I did go and check the Intel spex for P965 chipset and that states max FSB of 1066.  In theory the P965, do not support the 1333 FSB.
I have emailed support and know could be a few days for reply....... not long
Other replies, thanks it all helps and I do try them out.

    Hello
HAs anyone managed to control their fans using speedfan and an MSI P965 platinum .. with the latest speedfan beta I have managed to obtain the right temperature readings (on core duo) but no fans show up in speedfan to control etc...
Would appreciate your info if you have it working

Thanks for your reply - thing is im quite ok with fan speed - i have been running for over 4 years on various motherboards with no problem but with this one I simply have no access to the fans at all -- under the speeds and fans Tabs in Speedfan there is nothing listed - so I can't change anything
Maybe there is a bios setting or something that I am missing ?
    Would really appreciate some insight
Hmmm... only thing that even resebles it is that i have auto oc disabled, and temp target at 50C. Fan failure warning disabled.
I think I had ability to control fanspeed with original bios 1.5, but i had to upgrade it to 1.6B9 and now later to 1.6B13 as im having huge problems with my scsi controllers. Some are unbootable, some have strange performance issues, some work.
I would not recommend using betabios, I think I read somewhere that it voids warranty or something.
Oh and, im not using platinum, but neo version of the mobo.
Try checking if you rly have latest version, ill check mine when i get home.

  • Q9550 cpu and p965 platinum problem

I have P965 platinum m/b with 1.8 bios. The old CPU is E6400. I just tried to instal Q9550. PC starts but stack at MSI logo. Any ideas?
    EDIT: 1+3 led are  red

    Hello,
which Revision of the Q9550 are you using?
The CPU Support List only includes the Q9550/C1 [sSpec number = SLAWQ].  If you have the Q9550/E0 you have a CPU Support problem.  That processor is not included in the CPU Support list.  It requires a MicroCode-Update and currently the latest BIOS for your Board is v1.80 which does not include such an update.

    Hi,
I haven't been able to look at your code, but are you sure it hasn't got anything to do with overflow? (values > 255)?
Easiest way (if there is no time constraint), is to use the ImageToArray function. Convert then to I32, and you are able to add as many pictures as you want.
Afterwards divide and use the ArrayToImage function.

  • Subtitle problems with Encore CS4 and BD/Blu-ray -- here is a solution!

Do you have problems with subtitles: for example they vanish completely after doing fast forward or turn them off and on again. Then here you can find one possible solution.
I am using Windows Vista 32bit. Thus Encore CS4 is the last version which I can use. Because Adobe will never provide a solution for this version, I was looking for another solution.
At least I found a workaround for my subtitle problems.
Now I am doing the following steps:
    1. Create the blu-ray disk in a folder without subtitles
    2. Create the subtitles with a program like "subtitle workshop"
    3. Save the subtitles in the .srt format.
    4. Use the program SubConverter Express v1.5.0 to convert the subtitles in the .sup format. Here you must choose a suitable font & font size.
    5. Add the .sup to the blu-ray folder structure with the program BDFix Express v1.7.3. When doing that, you can also choose the language i.g. "deu" for german. You will find a detailed description in the forum on www.defsoft.com. It is very easy to understand.
    6. BDFix will create a new folder with all necessary files to burn a blu-ray disk. Nothing changes in comparison to the folder which was createt by Encore except that subtitles were added.
    7. You can burn this folder with a tool like imgburn.
With this workaround you will have the following advantages:
    1. It seems that these subtitles were added in a blu-ray specification conform way. Fast forward/backward, switching on/off, chapter jump still work perfectly.
    2. The subtitle fonts are rendered in a much more smooth way than Encore does.
    3. The 5 frames gap between subtitles is not longer necessary.
    4. This solution ist quite fast (about 20 minutes for a 25 GByte disc).
    5. You can use these programs also for other blu-rays to add or remove subtitles.
    6. You do not need Encore to add/change or remove subtitles. You can do that also years later. You only need the burned blu-ray disc.
To be honest, there is one disadvantage:
    - The two programs (SubConverter & BDFix) cost about 200 US Dollar. But to cure my nerves that was worth it.
Hint: You can do a first test with the freeware versions. But there are two limitations. SubConverter can only import 30 subtitle lines and BDFix will only create 3 minutes of subtitles.
    Greetings,
    Ralf

FLV and F4V use different codecs for Flash video. H.264 in case of F4V and On2 VP6 for FLV. There's a difference of bitrate between different quality presets. You can check the bitrates of files generated using some tool. Your video might be very static to feel the different be the two quality settings.
F4V is the new format and need a newer version of Flash Player. Please update your Flash player and try again to play the F4V files.
Playstream doesnt support F4V format. You can only export FLV files to Playstream.
It might also be an issue of low bandwidth while playing a streaming video. Are you playing is locally or from a web server.

  • MSI Z68A GD-65 (B3) With i5 2500K and 280X, No POST

    Hello to the MSI Community!
I have a problem that I'm hoping someone might have a solution to. I recently installed a Powercolor R9 280X video card onto an MSI Z68A GD-65 (B3) motherboard running the V22.8 BIOS running an i5 2500K processor.
The problem is that when I try to boot up the computer with the 280X installed, the fans spin up, but there is no POST and no indication that the computer is trying to boot.
The GPU that was installed in the computer up until a short while ago (and is back in there right now) is an AMD 6950. That card is working fine with the motherboard, so I don't think its a MB issue. As for the 280X, that card ran fine on a 7 year old ABIT 975X board I had it running in for a couple days, so the video card is fine.
Perusing other posts in the forum, I came across another person who had encountered the same problem. They were able to resolve this issue by flashing the BIOS to V23.8b8:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=175513.msg1272440#msg1272440
Would anyone know where I could get a copy of this BIOS, or possibly know of a better BIOS that would resolve the problem with the video card as well as be the most advanced BIOS available while still being compatible with the 2500K? (As I understand it, the later BIOS' for the Z68A GD-65 don't necessarily play nicely with Sandy Bridge processors)
If someone has a copy of a BIOS that would work, either the one referenced in that other forum post or possibly a newer one, I would be much obliged.
Please let me know if I need to provide any more information.
I appreciate any assistance anyone can provide.
    Thanks!

Indeed using an Ivy Bridge (ME8) bios on B3 boards can limit oc potential when using a Sandy Bridge cpu (0% problem if not overclocking). However using a current vgas will require using an ME8 bios. So you can decide not to use 280X or update to an ME8 bios. It is recommended to update to the latest bios (25.8), it might even eliminate most Sandy problems.
To update use the attached bios archive and the >>MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
With the >>MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< point to the attached and NOT unpacked bios archive (Mode 1: Point to Archive).
Let the tool prepare an USb stick for flashing and reboot from the stick and let the tool update bios. It will flash to the desired version 25.8.

My computer is unable to run photo shop CC and so on because my computer isn't compatible for being old. I was very sad to find out after purchasing. • Msi P965 Platinum with Vista Premium 64bit big problem

hi i cant run vista properly, i get blue screen dumps that dumps memory.
Some time it can run 5min sometimes 2hours
Vista says that there is a hardware incompatiblity something with memory.
I have run memtest x86 it passed, and Vistas memtest fail.
tryed to run with only one memory and changed place to them
core duo center doesent work either.
now i run windows Xp with latest drivers and everything works just fine.
I want to run my computer on windows vista 64bit, whats my problem

Sad to hear about those problems, especially since I am going to upgrade to Vista myself in the nearest future.
I have no guarantee that this will work, but try using manual settings for RAM. And set RAM to 5-5-5-15, not 4-4-4-12. And run RAM at stock speed, and the same goes for FSB etc.
And try using 2,1V for the RAM.
If you have runned on manual settings, set the to "Auto" if you haven't tried that.
I have read abuot one guy that got bluescreens all the time when he overclocked in Vista. You haven't overclocked, have you? :P
EDIT: I see you use BIOS v1.3. Try flashing to v1.2.
I flashed from a bluescreenfree system at high overclocks (v1.2), to a instable system vith plenty of bluescreens when exeding 340-350FSB.
With BIOS 1.2, I have booted with FSB 389, and been able to run SuperPI, CPU-Z and some other small programs. Now, with BIOS 1.3, I can't get into windows, get bluescreen before logon is complete.
I think there is something "wrong" with the northbrigde in P965 Platinum, because the errors are allways memory related.

  • Whoo Hoo! Trouble Free P965 Platinum Install!

Well, this is going to be my first and probably only post here.  I know a lot of people who read this forum are either thinking of buying this board or have one and are getting ready to assemble their new machines.
I was in the later group and in reading through all the other posts I started to get a bit concerned that I was going to have a rough ride.  I am happy to report that that was not the case.  My build went smooth as butter.  Here what I put together...
    MSI P965 Platinum
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe CPU
    XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
    2 x 1 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
    Maxtor L01F300 320GB SATA
    NEC 18X DVD +/-R
    Antec TruePower Trio 650w
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 ATX Case
I did run into two small issues.  First, I was getting a yellow "!" next to one entry in the device manager.  SM... something, can't remember exactly what it was called.  Turns out if you install the Intel INI drivers from the included install CD that gets cleared up.  Second was with the infamous JMicron drivers.  I was able to get XP installed, but I was getting REALLY SLOW read speeds when I was installing games.  I updated the drivers and and now my drive's speed is where it should be.
So to sum up, this MoBo has been a dream to install, the very few problems I encountered were minor and my system is totally stable and fast!  If you're considering buying this board, by all means, go for it.
    Happy computing all!

I'm glad to know that you are happy with your system .
    Enjoy and have Funz!
