Average Render Times for HDV? 1 1/2 minute takes 30 minutes

Hello everyone.
I was curious if anyone has heavy experience with HDV render times or have a good resource to get average render times for HDV so I can make sure my times are close to everyone elses. I know HDV has a different GOP structure which makes render times longer, but it just seems to take for ever.
I have a Dual 3GHz Qaud-Core MacPro with 5GB RAM using Compressor 3.
1 1/2 minutes from FCP 6:
Preset 90min high quality DVD MPG 2- takes 30 minutes
Preset M4V for iPod/iPhone - takes 40 minutes
Any knowledge or resources would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Deuce

To be honest, neither of your planned "upgrades" would improve performance all that much because you have too few drives and you will still have too little RAM. Premiere Pro CS5 still needs more than 12GB of RAM just to perform at its best. In addition, two drives (in your planned upgrade case, one SSD and one HDD) barely meet Adobe's stated minimum system requirements; Adobe strongly recommends more than three separate drives. (In your case, you'd need at least four completely matched hard drives in two (R)AID 0 arrays, with each matched pair in one array, in addition to the SSD.) And current AMD x4 CPU-based systems perform at least three to four times slower than a fast Intel-based system because the AMD CPUs do not fully support the SSE 4.x extensions that Adobe makes heavy use of.
As currently configured, you have a system that's at least 8 to 10 times slower than a fast, properly tuned Intel-based system. And even after you perform the so-called "AMD upgrade", your upgraded system will still be six to eight times slower than a fast mid-priced Intel-based system. And all that is due to the fact that you'd still have only two drives and too little RAM (IIRC you'd still have only 4GB of RAM and only a single hard drive for everything except the OS and programs even after the AMD-based "upgrade").

  • ISA Server 2006 + Average response time for Non Cached requests = performance issues?!?!?!

    All,
I am in a predicament with internet browsing speeds...We have a 3rd party look after our line and internet facing f/w  so I cant troubleshoot them, so at the moment Im looking at ISA as the potential bottleneck - we have a fairly standard environment:
    Internal > Local Host > Perimiter n/work > Firewall > Internet
I have been running custom reports on the ISA server to see what data can be collected - I have noticed that "Average response time for non cached requests" (traffic by time of day) can be as high as 76 seconds!!!!!! Cached hits are between .5
    and 2 seconds.
I have also coonfigured a connectivity verifier which is also flagging slow connectivity, massively over the >5000ms and also reporting "cant resolve server name on occassions- and this is configured for
www.Microsoft.com --- DNS ???!?!, however I have looked through DNS (no obvious errors / config issues) which I can see
I have run the BPA on ISA server to ensure its Health - - connectivity verifier errors flagged timeouts to microsoft.com as expected...
Can anyone advise any obvious areas to investigate as Im struggling! - as always the 3rd party have told us the internet pipe is fine :O

    Problem resolved.
DNS forwarders have been changed on the ISA server / DNS and this has improved lookup speed considerably.
    thanks all :)

  • I have a problem sending mail via smtp. I use a satellite system and the average return time for a ping is 675ms. Is this a problem with mail? If so can I change Mail to accept it. The problem also exists with Lion

I have a problem sending mail via smtp. I use a satellite system and the average return time for a ping is 675ms. Is this a problem with mail? If so can I change Mail to accept it. The problem also exists with Lion and on both my MacPro and my wife's Imac. I also see my mailboxes randomly disconnecting and reconnecting. Any other ideas of a possible cause?

I solved it myself, after the "note" which came back from FF/Mozilla just as I finished my message, commenting on what it was that my system had , I wnnt back to check my plug-ins etc. I downloaded the latest Java, BOTH 32bit AND 64 bit versions and latest Firefox.
    Now all is working.
    Thanks,
    B.

  • Average startup time for 2012 MBP with ML?

I recently bought a brand new 13" mbp (i5 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm). After installing some apps and updating mountian lion from 10.8 to 10.8.2, startup is much slower now and takes around 45 sec (time period from powering on the mbp to login screen). Also apps are launching slower now. Startup was taking less than its half before updating the mac os. Is there any way to improve the startup time? What is an average boot time for similar mbp?

I ordered mine on May 17, it was shipped from the factory May 24 (China) and delivered to my door the morning of May 25 (time zones and a date line account for the fast enroute time. I ordered the 7200rpm drive, 2gb RAM & glossy screen.
So far, absolutely no problems, the unit works perfectly.

  • Is 12hrs a normal estimated render time for a 10min video?

I'm trying to make visuals for my music, which consists of 4 pictures, 4 adjustment layers (each with 1 evolution keyframe from start to finish on each), & 2 audio spectrums. Being brand new to AE, iss 12 hrs a normal render time upon exporting?
    I'm running on an i7-4820k, Windows 7/64bit, 32GB of RAM, & a Geforce GTX 760.
Any answers/questions for me would be great!!

Ah, your lack of experience won't help, I'm afraid. You cannot intuitively decide how to optimize rendering without lots of experience. AE just doesn't work like Photoshop or FCP or Illustrator. You could, hover, transcode your mp3 to aan uncompressed codec and save some processing. You could copy your Audio and Audio Spectrum layers and put them in their own comp and render that out as prores422. Bring the rendered movie back in and replace all those layers with the movie. Adjustment layers are sexy but misleading. You probably are using them incorrectly, most beginners do. Fractal noise can be a rendering slug. Render that as a movie if you can.
Prerendering is basically just looking at your comp and deciding what effects/layers are not dependent on others. Precomposing is a process of grouping layers together to form a desired output that can be fed back into the main comp for a specific effect or filter. The classic example is drop shadow on a rotating object. If you just apply the drop shadow to the rotation object, the shadow is applied before the object is moved and the shadow moves with the object as it rotates, destroying the illusion. If you precompose the rotating object and apply the shadow to the precomp, the movement is rendered before the shadow is applied. It's complicated but you get the hang of it after a few epic rants.
Try to have fun. AE is unbelievably cool.

  • Is this normal render time for an FCP Project?

I'm trying to determine if i have underlying problems with the computer or something else, because this seemed like a very long time to render.
    system config:
    G5 2 X 2.5 GHz procs
    2.5 G RAM
    Raedon 9800 XT - 256 MB VRAM
50Gigs available storage space on the internal drive
    Final Cut version 5.0.4
    OSX 10.4.4
    Project properties:
    5 layers
    bottom layer: animated quicktime movie
next layer: animated qt movie, with softwipe filter
next layer: Live type imported file: 5 lines of text, with "fade on" effect"
next layer: Live type effect with 3 words, with "horiz blur" effect
top layer: photoshop image.. basically a Lower third graphic, that is 720 X 480, one layer
No audio.. and none of the layers have any kind of keyframe motions whatsoever
    18 seconds long
    Output: 720 X 480 DV
    Total render time: 6 minutes
It seems like since i went from FCP 4 to 5, the render times have inflated... or am i crazy..
    thanks

If you're adding any Motion tab effects and your sequence is set to 'Best Motion Filtering Quality', then you can expect render times to be a bit longer than with FCP4. I don't think it's a big jump, though, but I might be wrong about that.
FCP4 used motion filtering quality that is now equivalent to FCP5's 'Fastest Motion Filtering Quality'.
Except for that, you probably just crazy . . . and welcome to the asylum.

  • Much longer render time for a few small changes?

I bought a new Macbook pro last week with a 2.4 ghz intel i5 processor and 8 GB of ram. I got Adobe premiere pro yesterday and I made a video which combined taking footage shot from my flip video camera and audio commentary that I recorded across the full video. The video was rendered with the setting H.264 and the preset Youtube widescreen HD, the final video was about an 800 MB .mp4 file. It took about 30-40 minutes to render.
Today, I added a 17 minute mp3 file for background music, which was 17 mb. I also added 6 images and 2 titles which overlay the video at different points. The only other thing I added along with these two was a 16 second mov file which serves as an intro video to my series. With these 3 (what I consider to be fairly small) changes, my render time has jumped dramatically. With the same export settings, I see the render time build and build until it reaches 4+ hours and I decide to stop. I've tried a couple different formats, but I'm not sure what else to do. I feel that 8gb should be plenty to render a video like this fairly quickly (like I did yesterday) and I'm not sure why it's taking so long compared to yesterday. Is this normal? Any help to guide me with reducing render times would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The Export time will differ by what one is Exporting from and what they are Exporting to. In this case, the "to" has not changed.
    What has changed?
Well, the stills for one. What is the format and what are the pixel x pixel dimensions of those?
The addition of the MOV is another place to look. What is the CODEC inside that MOV "wrapper?" Having to decode via the CODEC can impact the Export time.
The new Audio has changed. What is the format/CODEC of that music file?
Those are the first thoughts that I have on this, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • Average response times for VA01 and VA02 transactions

    Hi,
we have some users complaining about response times, more specific for VA01 and VA02 transactions. We would like to compare our average response times to those of other companies in order to get an idea of what is acceptable to most companies. If you are willing to contribute, can you please send a few hours of STAD data (only for VA01 and VA02 transactions) of an average working day? Perhaps you can download the data into a spreadsheet and mail the zipped file to my account Many thanks.
    Best regards,
    Guido Van Leuven

    Hi,
This is not the issue. We are investigating everything possible to improve our response times and we believe that that these are ok as well. We just want to build a case where we can prove that our response times are not worse than those at other companies and that we can do only by comparing those statistics.
    Best regards,

  • Long Render Times in HDV

I've just started on FCP HDV and have noticed that it take a really long time to render. The timeline is set up in the same formatt at the files i've captured and my export settings follow suit.
can anyone explain why it takes an hour to export 4 minutes of timeline.
I am running a brand new G5 and the IT dept have it running well.
I know that HDV is huge but I never had this problem with Premiere Pro HD.
    Cheers heaps for any replies,
    NicNeame

I am making DVD's in the end. I have used the easy set up and everything is flush. Exports are done using Quicktime export not quicktime Conversion. My other question is there an easy to export a low res QT of the timeline quickly.
I am also using the H.264 blah blah range of codecs too but only on renders with Aftereffects. They dont need to be rendered in the FCP timeline and my fields still look good.
Im pretty sure I have the intermediate codec though. Is ther a completed codec out yet?
    Thanks for the replies guys

  • What's an average download time for a movie on appletv?

Trying to use AppleTV for the first time and it seems to be taking hours to download.  My network is working properly.

Welcome to the Apple Community Permershall.
There isn't an average as such, it depends on connection speeds.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Average battery time for ipod touch 4th generation

I recently bought an iPod Touch 4th Gen, and I'm surprised at how little use I get out of it between charges. I'm hoping someone with more experience can give me some feedback that might help me determine if what I'm seeing is normal.
I'm getting a maximum of 2 days use out of the iPod. I am currently using it a lot, as I'm still choosing apps and transferring data (sometimes by hand) from my old Palm. What I'm not doing is much in the way of power-hungry activities like video or games. I would say my average daily usage is...
    - Downloading 3-4 apps (I'm trying different apps for budgeting, gas mileage tracking, etc.)
    - Sufring the web (maybe 5-10 minutes a day, usually reading up on those apps or using the IMDb app
    - Checking the weather once or twice on a few different apps (trying to find a good one)
    - Adding things to a shopping-list app, or using it for shopping
    - Using the calendar a few times a day
    - Checking email maybe once a day (only if I'm tracking an issue at work and I'm not at my desk)
    - Maybe playing one or two game of PoolBreak (every other day on average)
I have only once watched video, and I did it specifically to test the battery. I have a couple battery-monitoring apps, both of which tell me, after I get my first 20% warning, I should still get over an hour of video. So I tried playing a video, and got only 20m in before the iPod shut down.
Also, when I plug it in to charge, it shows the battery at 45% full within 5-10 minutes. I know there's a rapid-charge for the first 80% or so, but that seems rapid enough that I wonder about the capacity.
So...that's it. Any insights from iTouch owners would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, that's normal.  The iPod uses a lot of power.  For additional battery information see: http://www.apple.com/batteries For suggestions for conserving your battery see http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html

  • Recommended Render Setting for HDV 1080 29.97 project

    Hello,
I'm making my 1st venture into creating my first HDV project in AE and I'm struggling with what render settings I should be using.  These are just athletic highlights I put together for a local college so there is nothing deeply complex in terms of animations, particles, etc.  Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Comp Preset: HDV 1080 29.97 (1440x1080)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33)
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Want to put final project on DVDs for distribution
If there is more information that is needed I'd be happy to provide ASAP.  Again, thanks for your direction.
    Regards,

If you're authoring in Encore and you've purchased one of the Adobe Suites, you can also drop Premiere Pro Projects, After Effects Projects or rendered uncopressed or lossless HD files directly in the Project panel, drop them in a timeline and build your DVD there. AE and PPro projects open up a window that will give you the choice of AE comps or PPro Sequences.
If you do that and want multiple copies I'd recommend that you build a Disk Image so that compression only happens once and you can burn additional DVD's in minutes.
