Average startup time for 2012 MBP with ML?

I recently bought a brand new 13" mbp (i5 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm). After installing some apps and updating mountian lion from 10.8 to 10.8.2, startup is much slower now and takes around 45 sec (time period from powering on the mbp to login screen). Also apps are launching slower now. Startup was taking less than its half before updating the mac os. Is there any way to improve the startup time? What is an average boot time for similar mbp?

I ordered mine on May 17, it was shipped from the factory May 24 (China) and delivered to my door the morning of May 25 (time zones and a date line account for the fast enroute time. I ordered the 7200rpm drive, 2gb RAM & glossy screen.
So far, absolutely no problems, the unit works perfectly.

  • Bootup time for 2012 MBP?

Needs some help in deciding whether to upgrade to SSD or not.
I know for a fact SSD will speed up bootup time incredibly.  How much difference in bootup time we are talking about here?
My friend recently got a MBP (5400rpm HD) running Mountain Lion and the bootup from the time powerup to the time the login screen comes up is like close to 55 seconds.  Are we talking about at least half the time with SSD?
    Thanks.

I have never actually clocked my boot up time for my SSD in a while, if I remember correctly though it was about 15 seconds. The reason is there is no spinning disks to spin up and then find all the information on. SSDs are more like ram. The computer is directed to where the information is and it has it. I am very happy with my SSD, not only a fast boot up, but programs and files open quickly. Also read and write speeds can so much as tripple, so duplicating, and moving files is also faster, and OCZ has a 5 year warranty on there SSDs. I like the fact that storage bays in all MacBook Pros 2011 and newer are user upgradable. That means if you are savy enough, you can put it in yourself without voididng the warranty, and when you buy a new mac in 6 years or so, you can transfer it if you would like. Check out OCZ here! The Vertex 4 has a write speed of 560 MB/s, mine is about 550Mb/s.

  • I have a problem sending mail via smtp. I use a satellite system and the average return time for a ping is 675ms. Is this a problem with mail? If so can I change Mail to accept it. The problem also exists with Lion

I have a problem sending mail via smtp. I use a satellite system and the average return time for a ping is 675ms. Is this a problem with mail? If so can I change Mail to accept it. The problem also exists with Lion and on both my MacPro and my wife's Imac. I also see my mailboxes randomly disconnecting and reconnecting. Any other ideas of a possible cause?

I solved it myself, after the "note" which came back from FF/Mozilla just as I finished my message, commenting on what it was that my system had , I wnnt back to check my plug-ins etc. I downloaded the latest Java, BOTH 32bit AND 64 bit versions and latest Firefox.
    Now all is working.
    Thanks,

  • ISA Server 2006 + Average response time for Non Cached requests = performance issues?!?!?!

    All,
I am in a predicament with internet browsing speeds...We have a 3rd party look after our line and internet facing f/w  so I cant troubleshoot them, so at the moment Im looking at ISA as the potential bottleneck - we have a fairly standard environment:
    Internal > Local Host > Perimiter n/work > Firewall > Internet
I have been running custom reports on the ISA server to see what data can be collected - I have noticed that "Average response time for non cached requests" (traffic by time of day) can be as high as 76 seconds!!!!!! Cached hits are between .5
    and 2 seconds.
I have also coonfigured a connectivity verifier which is also flagging slow connectivity, massively over the >5000ms and also reporting "cant resolve server name on occassions- and this is configured for
www.Microsoft.com --- DNS ???!?!, however I have looked through DNS (no obvious errors / config issues) which I can see
I have run the BPA on ISA server to ensure its Health - - connectivity verifier errors flagged timeouts to microsoft.com as expected...
Can anyone advise any obvious areas to investigate as Im struggling! - as always the 3rd party have told us the internet pipe is fine :O

    Problem resolved.
DNS forwarders have been changed on the ISA server / DNS and this has improved lookup speed considerably.
    thanks all :)

  • Average Render Times for HDV? 1 1/2 minute takes 30 minutes

    Hello everyone.
I was curious if anyone has heavy experience with HDV render times or have a good resource to get average render times for HDV so I can make sure my times are close to everyone elses. I know HDV has a different GOP structure which makes render times longer, but it just seems to take for ever.
    I have a Dual 3GHz Qaud-Core MacPro with 5GB RAM using Compressor 3.
    1 1/2 minutes from FCP 6:
Preset 90min high quality DVD MPG 2- takes 30 minutes
    Preset M4V for iPod/iPhone - takes 40 minutes
Any knowledge or resources would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Deuce

To be honest, neither of your planned "upgrades" would improve performance all that much because you have too few drives and you will still have too little RAM. Premiere Pro CS5 still needs more than 12GB of RAM just to perform at its best. In addition, two drives (in your planned upgrade case, one SSD and one HDD) barely meet Adobe's stated minimum system requirements; Adobe strongly recommends more than three separate drives. (In your case, you'd need at least four completely matched hard drives in two (R)AID 0 arrays, with each matched pair in one array, in addition to the SSD.) And current AMD x4 CPU-based systems perform at least three to four times slower than a fast Intel-based system because the AMD CPUs do not fully support the SSE 4.x extensions that Adobe makes heavy use of.
As currently configured, you have a system that's at least 8 to 10 times slower than a fast, properly tuned Intel-based system. And even after you perform the so-called "AMD upgrade", your upgraded system will still be six to eight times slower than a fast mid-priced Intel-based system. And all that is due to the fact that you'd still have only two drives and too little RAM (IIRC you'd still have only 4GB of RAM and only a single hard drive for everything except the OS and programs even after the AMD-based "upgrade").

  • Different startup times for different accounts

Recently I have had slow startup times on my MBP. I tried adding a test account just to test to the startup speed on that account. My main account starts up fine until after the OS X load screen, then the background will load up, but it takes approx. 1 minute for the dock and the menu bar to appear. On the test account, the startup is much quicker and there is not the same lag that there is for my main account. I have recently repaired permissions and the hard drive. I have also removed all startup items for my main account. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing these slow startup times?

Try removing all those files and folders from your desktop and place them elsewhere in your home directory and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, try deleting…
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    … and then immediately restart.

  • Startup time for ipod

    Hi
What would you say is a normal startup time for the built in ipod app? Mine take 8 seconds to start if it isn't present in memory.

Yesterday, some podcast appeared in my playlist which I had deleted a long time ago. We're talking weeks here.
It was podcasts I had downloaded to the phone through wifi, and never synced to itunes.
I'm starting to suspect that there may be references to podcasts which no longer exists, or do exist but that the ipod app for some reason can't access them. I believe that the ipod app halts for 20 seconds because it's trying to locate/read these files but can't access them for some reason, then it times out.
I'm going to do a complete delete of all the contents on the phone this evening, the delete process which the phone states may take up to 2 hours, and then resync the phone and see if that solves the problem.

  • Mid-2012 MBP with 27" Cinema Display SCREEN GOES BLACK WHEN USING USB PERIPHERALS IN DOCK

I haven't been able to find any straightforward answer as to why this is happening and it's becoming one of the most infuriating things in my life, impeding my workflow and costing me unmeasurable time in waiting, rebooting, screwing with cables, etc.
I use my MBP as a DAW for multitracking live audio events to ProTools through a digital console where I work. Here's my gear list that I use every day:
    Mid-2012 MBP - Yosemite, 8GB, i7 quad 2.5, mechanical hd
HengeDocks dock for my exact model machine - has set-screw jacks for CinemaDisplay power, Tbolt, FW800, USB, USB, SDcard, headphones, etc
    USB wired keyboard
Anker 1x4 USB3.0 hub - I have a TimeMachine 1TB drive, 3TB project backup drive, audio interface and MIDI I/O or PT iLok, depending what I'm working on
    Magic Mouse (BlueTooth)
    Here's what's happening:
SCENARIO 1 - I insert the CinemaDisplay (cD) power connector and TBolt plugs into the dock, tighten the set screws, close the lid of my MBP (already logged into Yosemite & linked with MagicMouse [mM]) and stick the MBP into the dock... everything comes up on the cD and I can go about my day. At this point, I can plug the USB hub into the back of the cD and the system sees the hub & all peripherals listed just fine.
SCENARIO 2 - Install cD powercon, TBolt connector, USB3 hub, USB keyboard into the dock, close the lid on MBP (again, logged in), insert into dock... cD comes up, looks great for about 15 seconds then goes completely blank. No response from key presses, mouse clicks, threats with a hammer, etc. Then, of course, I have to yank the MBP out of the dock, which hard-disconnects the external drives (backup and TimeMachine... good for them, right?) and causes the MBP to flake, thinking it's still in the dock, then not, then logging me out & requiring a password (not a big deal- I deal with copyrighted stuff, so passwords aren't the issue).
***EVEN IF I DO NOT PLUG THE USB3 HUB INTO THE HENGE DOCK, THE cD STILL GOES BLANK AFTER 15 SEC... IT ONLY SEEMS TO LIKE THE TBOLT AND POWER... NO OTHER PERIPHERALS (fw800, USB, etc)***
It seems like the MBP freaks out when the lid is closed and there are USB/FW peripherals plugged in while using a secondary TBolt display as the main output... seems stupid... if I need a closed-lid dock, the MBP shouldn't care what I have plugged in while the lid is closed. I had the same issues with Mountain Lion & Mavericks and now it's being repeated with Yosemite.
My goal in this exercise is simply to free up the USB jacks on the back of the cD for two reasons - #1) from time to time, I have extra things to plug in and I don't want some massive USB 1x8 hub on my desk... looks stupid; #2) the bottleneck created by plugging in the hub to the back of the cD (another hub via TBolt) almost triples the time required to back up/copy files. I move files from system drive to backup drive & back VERY often due to the nature of my job... speeding up this process would greatly improve my efficiency in the matter. Why would Henge create a dock with all the jacks on it to allow someone to plug into a cD that won't frickin work with said cD? Every other dock I've found makes the user stick the MBP on a slanted, goofy-looking stand and have the lid open or something dumb like that... what I have is the setup I need... just need the USB stuff to work while lid is closed and everything from powercon & cD to USB3 hubs will work without making the cD freak out.
    Any ideas out there?

Have now taken the 27" display into the repair shop and after 24 hrs got the phone call - "appears to be nothing wrong with it, will check again on Tuesday and let you know".
I can't seem to find anything on the net describing a similar problem. Everything is working fine right now with the Mac Pro connected to the older 20 inch Cinema Display. In fact, everything seems to be working about a second faster.
I was told by the local retailer that Apple no longer makes the 27 inch LED Cinema Display product and the new display, the "Thunderbolt" will not work with my 13 month old Mac Pro.
***??? In 20 years of owning Mac equipment, this is my first major "uh-oh".

  • Hard Drive Replacement for 2012 MBP

I am working on replacing the hard drive in my 2012 MBP. I have a 500 GB, solid state drive. I looked at the drives at OWC and found two drives I think are worth considering.
    (1) A pure solid state drive with 1.0 TB. This is ~$580. Expensive, but 1.0 TB and all SSD.
    (2) A Hybrid drive with a total of 1.0 TB. However, only 8 GB is flash storage. But I can get the kit for around $100. I’m wondering, though, what kind of speed/performance issues am I likely going to encounter or notice with this change?
    Any feedback is welcomed. Thanks,
    Jeff

If I were you, I would stay with a straight SSD - a hybrid drive is going to seem slow by comparison and since you're accustomed to SSD performance, I think you would definitely notice a 'slow down' in performance.
Right now, the only 1TB drives I am recommending are the Crucial M550 and the Samsung EVO. What brand are you looking at on the OWC website?

  • Slow startup time for JDeveloper 9i

The JDeveloper 9i release candidate takes a long time to startup. The pop-up window for method completion is also much slower than JBuilder 5.0. And I am using a 1.2 GHz P4 machine. Is it possible to speed up the startup time (maybe by making it not load certain libraries, such as XML editor, UML editor, etc.)?
    Thanks
    Roshan

This is a problem caused by references to files / URLs on
    remote systems which are slow.
In particular, having projects with Remote Files/URLs in them
    can cause slowness.
Same for Libraries - Having too many libraries or libraries with
remote links can slow down the system.
Look carefully at your project's Libraries and be sure you are
    not including everything
Also see your project and make sure the files are all available
    locally.
Let me know if this is the problem or not,

  • Experience in delivery times for retina MBP so far?

So I put in an order for a retina Macbook Pro on June 17 and as we all know the estimated time to ship is 3-4 weeks right now.
For those of you who also ordered online, have you received yours yet?  Curious to see if the estimated time to ship is accurate or if they're just managing expectations.
    Yes, I'm impatient!

I think it is great machine.  Display is very sharp. The machine is noticably faster than my 2009 MBP.  Had no problems moving my software and data from my old machine to the new one, using Time Machine Back-up.  It brought over VMWare for windows.  My son installed Windows 7, and it runs very well.  However, I use it only for Quicken.  So far the new MBP with retina display fulfills the hype for me.  Only problems I have experienced involve iPhoto.  Had problems converting the thumbnails to high resolution.  Apple Care support, after a long time on the phone solved the problem, after the call was moved to higher level of support.  However, iPhoto has crashed twice.  The good news is my photos look amazing on the retina display.

  • Can I use an imac as a monitor for 2012 MBP?

I use a very slow mac at work, but once a year I need grunt to produce our annual catalogue.
My work imac is 20-inch, Mid 2007 (Old I know but my boss is too tight to upgrade)
My laptop at home is new 2012 MBP, 16gb Ram.
    My Question is:
Can I connect my 2012 MBP to my work iMac for use as a monitor?
If so, what cords do I need?
    Any help would be great.

Well that was helpful.  So having trawled these discussions it appears that:
    A) the iMac I have doesn't have a video input capability, so it can't be a dumb monitor
    B) the iMac could connect to my air book over a network connection using JollyfastVNC software on the imac and screen recycler on the airbook.
So I will try the recycler option over wireless and over a cabled connection and see how cumbersome it is to use.

  • Bought logic pro 9.1.7 online for new MBP with mountain Lion, but asked for serial number. Where could I get SN?

How can I get the SN for an online version of Logic Pro bought from AppStore?
    Thanks!

good news. The trick is to delete the "logic pro 9" by dragging the App from Finder->Applications to trash bin, and re-doanload and re-install it again. Now it's happily downloading 19GB contents without asking for SN.
Thanks Pancenter for your message. This is is brand-new MBP with Retina display, and I didn't find or delete and reg file for logic. Simply delete the app under installation (not in the launch pad, see above) and re-install. It works for the 2nd try. It could be a SW integration bug.
